Once you get past the silly narration going on it seems only fair to talk about other elements of its time found here. Standards for nudity have drastically changed so the very first edition of Playboy's 'Sexy Lingerie' from 1989 suffers from a lack of it. Emphasis on atmosphere and style is the order of the day. Worth a watch for PB fans or those with a glint of nostalgia, but this beginning can't be classified as killer erotica.
Intro is a mix of your standard montage and unique shots here as many words get spent describing the imagery and lingerie. It's both a mix of slow and high energy numbers pieces and a few nice shots (some in closeup) peeked my interest (almost 4 mins). "Night Life: Auto Erotica" however is more in line with what I was expecting. Duo Playmates (Ava Fabian, Lynn Austin) either walk the streets in the evening or climb into a car as they get shown off dressed for the longest time with obvious lingerie underneath. However it's all setup or more appropriately tease and no payoff. Yup no nudity here (2 mins).
"Innocence: Wedding Shower" finds three ladies (Sandra Wild, Terri Doss, Rebekka Armstrong) opening gifts and of course pieces of lingerie within. Odd topless shot as they undress, try on before it becomes a standard wedding themed boy/girl as the blonde (Sandra) gets stripped by her new beau and kissed thru fantasy. Good shot or two of Sandra, but again mostly just atmosphere (almost 4 mins).
"Adventure: Orient Express" sees Barbara Edwards supposedly in a private train boxcar. Its obviously a set, but more importantly the vintage strip does a great job of showing off her body. Closeups of her boobs and shockingly some risque looks at her kitty (2 mins). A high energy montage of a blonde lady in between dancing supplies nudity, but short (25 secs). "Exotic: Avant-Garde" is one those fashion model futuristic strips as the lady (Roxanne Kernohan) gets naked. A nice shot or two as the light hits her, but the majority is shot / shown with a blueish hue put over the entire thing dragging it down (3 mins).
"Bedtime: Patterns and Light" sees three ladies (Terri Doss, Pia Reyes, Lynne Austin) in bed wearing lingerie pleasantly, but little nudity (2.5 mins). "Glamour: Inspiration" is another photoshoot that sees the lady shown topless before the whole thing turns boy/girl. Unfortunately also shown in sepia as the guy lightly touches, kisses her. Too "artsy" to be memorable (4 mins). "Night Life II: Auto Erotica" returns to the car and same ladies (Ava, Lynn) as before with more B&W and only brief shots of both topless in the back (2 mins).
"Wet: Sleek and Sexy" is two ladies (Teri, Pia) rolling around or posing in a shallow pond of water / getting hit by showers of water overhead. Few good shots in the mix particularly of Pia, but the scene doesn't reach it's full potential (3 mins). "Illusion: Mirage" sees three women (Hope Carlton, Laura Richmond, Kata Karkkainen) in the desert. One more scene high on style low on nudity. A few shots topless, but also a lot of artsy fluff (3.5 mins). "Imagination: Modern Technicalities" has Playmate Teri Weigel in a boy/girl when her computer breaks down so she calls a repairman. I've seen this dude before with Teri (in other scenes) so I'll guess it was her real boyfriend at the time. She looks great so a few lovely shots, but also way too much setup and slow simulated romance sex (5 mins).
"Style: Changing Times" sees Pia pose with a male model in and out of clothes. A fun attitude is worth mentioning and Pia looks great, but it's not a hot segment (1.5 mins). "Romance: Brief Encounter" sees the lady in question (Laura Richmond) get out of her elegant dress as the man kisses on her. A vintage piece going for style it eventually has Laura down to only lingerie and then shots featuring her topless and fully nude, but not scorching stuff once again (3.5 mins). "Fantasy: Sex Objects" sees Rebekka Armstrong being turned on by a buff topless dude breaking ice and getting out of her dress, lingerie. The right attitude once again, but it's one more case in not enough nudity (5 mins). "Night Life III: Auto Erotica" serves as the finale, but settle for shots of Ava & Lynn topless because that's all you get (3 mins).
I went into 'Sexy Lingerie' knowing full well what a dated piece of work from Playboy was going to deliver. If you wanna lock eyes on a couple of vintage Playmates or once popular pinup model Sandra Wild, it's not without value, but it won't be getting another viewing from me.
