If you started watching Shoshimin: How to become Ordinary because of Hyouka , then, like me, you’re a fan of a slow-paced comfort show with mundane mysteries threaded throughout. You’re also a fan of Honobu Yonezawa — the author of the novels. Shoshimin: How to become Ordinary has been a delight to watch despite the difference in studio and direction. Like Hyouka, it’s character-driven and elevates mysteries that would appear simple and boring in real life, but thanks to the animation and cinematography, it’s anything but. In a similar vein, our main characters, Jogoro Kobato and Yuki Osanai, want nothing more than to be "ordinary." Despite their efforts, they’re far from it. In the spirit of the show, I’m going to deduce what makes Shoshimin: How to become Ordinary and its characters so compelling and how the twist at the end makes them question if being ordinary is worth it.

There are filmmakers whose work is undeniably singular, even if you look at a single frame of the film. Wes Anderson is one of those directors. But another would be French filmmaker, Quentin Dupieux. And in this episode of The Playlist Podcast, Quentin Dupieux joins to talk about his new film, “Smoking Causes Coughing,” which might be his wildest, most Dupieux-iest film yet.

Jurassic World: Dominion star Jeff Goldblum has revealed that there are post-production changes afoot for the movie’s plot which are being deliberately designed to make it more meaningful in a post-pandemic era.
Goldblum, who has reprised his role as Dr. Ian Malcolm for the upcoming dino sequel alongside Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Neill and Laura Dern, says that his Jurassic Park mathematician has always been vocal about the kind of scientific outlook and philosophy that has become a focus for many people during the events of 2020.
“There are things that my character talks about, has always talked a little bit about, the fragility of our species and the global cooperation that’s needed and the foundation and science that is needed,” explained Goldblum on EW’s video series, Couch Surfing. “Oh, and the ethical use of science that’s needed to unite us in trust and connectedness as a family.

To a much greater degree than their male counterparts, many of music’s top female singers have attempted to make the leap into the next frontier: acting. Yet only a few have managed to sustain major screen careers.
Does Lady Gaga possess the thespian talent to pull it off? She already has a Golden Globe for “American Horror Story” to go along with her six Grammys. Now, with her first starring role in a feature film, the just-opened fourth remake of “A Star Is Born,” she’s on the edge of potential Oscar glory.
You could say the true test of potential staying power for female singers has been the screen test. Doris Day aced hers in the golden age of Hollywood, and so, in the rock era, did Cher, after several flubs (including the 1969 flop “Chastity”). Barbra Streisand and Bette Midler both started in the theater but became famous...

The Vibes perfume comes in a bottle that is a close facsimile of the Registered Vibes Logo." TMZ says that Vibes Media wants all the bottles to be destroyed, and they also want damages. Sounds like a mess if you ask us... Kim's rep did not comment on this matter, however, this isn't the first time the mom-of-three has been involved in a lawsuit. She...

Some have argued that 1988 was the greatest year for summer cinema: Die Hard, Bull Durham, Big, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Coming to America, and A Fish Called Wanda all clocked us with genre-bending ingenuity in ’88. I was thinking about it the other day, and I’m prepared to call 1988 one of the best years for pop/dance music too. If you’re like me and worship things like silver anniversaries, hopefully you can make use of this jam-packed list: 10 underrated dance jams from ’88 that will fill your summer of 2013 with monumental firepower. It’s 1988, and it’s forever our girl.

Alexa here, following up on Glenn's Cyndi Lauper post. I've been a Cyndi follower and sometime apologist (see: my previous support of Vibes) since grade school, so Sunday night was a big night. Now if only we could conjure the perfect role for her to complete her Egot; perhaps Jonathan Demme could harness the power of her marvelous quirk? For now, here are some Cyndi creations to celebrate her Kinky Boots.

Glenn here talking Tony. The Tonys, of course. More specifically Cyndi Lauper at them.
There were many things from last night's show worth discussing - that opening number, the Smash cast all seated plum in the front row, Megan Hilty's performance in the ode to axed TV series with Andrew Rannells (The New Normal) and Laura Benanti (Go On), Cicely Tyson's ruffle dress, the terrible Bring It On performance, the incredible Pippin performance - but one of the most interesting is, I think, Cyndi Lauper now being just an Oscar away from finishing off the prestigious Egot.
Ever since winning the Best New Artist Grammy in 1985 the careers of Cyndi Lauper and Madonna have been intrinsically linked. Madonna wasn't nominated for the Grammy (can you believe?), but these two fiercely iconic 1980s superstars have always felt like competing examples of the fortunes of '80s superstars. While it's...

Songs that missed the top ten, or top twenty ... or top forty, and over the last five months I hope some of these forgotten gems may have rung a long dormant bell, or for younger readers, provided a pop music history lesson.
Here is the complete list, including my favorite lost song of the decade. Thank you for taking this 80's road trip with me ... but it's not over yet! I'll be featuring a new Lost Hit once a week in the Wednesday Briefs, so the history lesson will continue!
Let the countdown commence, and remember ... keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for the stars!

Birthday shoutouts go to Sam Worthington (above), who is 36, and Kevin Smith is 42. This sentence will be the only mention of that chicken place today.Well, except for this. Days Of Our Lives star Melissa Reeves tweeted her support for that chicken place. Anyone who knows anything about the history of Dool knows about Melissa's ...um, "troubles" years ago, so showing her approval for that chicken place's support for the "sanctity of marriage" is well, ridiculous.

Last night Neil Patrick Harris hosted The Tony Awards for the third time, and does what he does best ...effortlessly charm an audience, and made a three-hour awards show into a fast-moving celebration of the best of Broadway.
The big winner was Once, which took home eight Tonys including Best Musical, with Clybourne Park nabbing Best Play.
You can see a complete list of this year's winners at the official Tony Awards site, but let's take a look at ten of the most memorable moments from last night's show.
The Opening
"Welcome everyone to the 66th Tony Awards! Or as we like to call it ... Fifty Shades of Gay."
With that inevitable line, Nph got down to business, after the show opened with a number from last year's winner The Book Of Mormon (Hmmm ... Neil dressed as a Mormon missionary. That's got to fulfill someone's fantasy.) He then launched into...

AfterElton Briefs: "Titanic" Helps Sink "Gcb," "My Boyfriend Does My Makeup," and Hillary Cuts Loose
Birthday shoutouts go to the recently-out Sean Maher (above), who is 37, the faboo Ellen Barkin is 58, Selena would have been 41, and Dusty Springfield would have been 73. What are your favorite Selena or Dusty songs? Here are my three fave Dusty songs. 3. "Son Of A Preacher Man," 2. "What Have I Done To Deserve This," and the gorgeous 1. "Windmills Of Your Mind."In ratings news, some Celine-less unnecessary mini-series helped drag Gcb to a series low.Speaking of, "Titanic Anniversary: Ship's Gay Passengers Revealed In New Research."Cyndi Lauper will reprise her role as psychic Avalon Harmonia on an upcoming episode of Bones. I need to go watch Vibes for the hundredth time.Tom Hardy talks about playing Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, and if the ugly mask he wears is a liability. “I think he worried it would be something I might not consider because wearing a mask might damage my career or something.

The legendary raspy voiced Peter Falk has passed away at his home in Beverly Hills according to a family statement. He was 83 and had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease according to The Sydney Morning Herald.
Despite a rumpled appearance, a glass right eye and a quiet voice - Falk was also a fiercely compelling actor who handled dark drama and comedic farce with equal skill. Starting out on stage, he first got noticed for his work as a gangster in "Murder, Inc" and followed that with Frank Capra's last film "Pocketful of Miracles" - scoring Oscar nominations for both performances.
He also worked with John Cassavetes on both "Husbands" and "A Woman Under the Influence", played a closeted Raymond Chandler-inspired detective in the mystery spoof "Murder by Death", and had roles in "The Great Race," "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World," "Vibes," "The In-Laws," "The Princess Bride,...

Today is a big day for Cyndi Lauper. Not only does her latest album Memphis Blues (a covers album featuring classic blues licks) hit stores today, but it also happens to be the day she turns 57 years old. It's her birthday, and there are any number of ways for her to celebrate.
Throughout her career, Lauper has proven herself to be incredibly versatile and adaptive. After spending her youth singing in clubs in New York City, Lauper scored a big splash with her 1983 album She's So Unusual. She presented a unique, impressive style, as she was performing bubbly pop songs while retaining a low-fi approach and a fashion sense that borrowed from the punk, glam and dance worlds. The single "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" made Lauper a household name, and the video (which co-starred professional wrestler Captain Lou Albano) was an early MTV staple. The hits from She's So Unusual kept coming,...

She's so unusual.
It's not just that she has colorful hair and crazy wardrobe. It's not just the four octave range. It's not just the tireless fight for other people's civil rights. It's the combination of all the unusual and wonderful things. Since this is a movie site, enjoy Cyndi Lauper's movie themed numbers on her birthday today. And please note: Cyndi's new record "Memphis Blues" also debuts today.
She's now writing the music for the Broadway adaptation of the drag comedy Kinky Boots (2005). I wasn't crazy about that movie but it seems like a natural fit for a stage musical transfer. If anything it'll be way better given that Cyndi Lauper and Broadway legend Harvey Fierstein are involved.
Cyndi's Movie/TV songs
"Another Brick in the Wall" from a 1990 concert version of Pink Floyd The Wall (1982)
"Pee Wee's Playhouse" Theme Song (1986)... the greatest tv theme song of all time,...

The concept behind ScreenStar and its mother ship, PopStar, is to celebrate all things celebrity, but sometimes things come along from Hollywood that put us to the challenge. One such thing is Tooth Fairy (2010). Look, the world could use a good family film, no question. In times like these, a laugh is a nice thing and a film the whole family can see, well, that's priceless. But, really, everything about Tooth Fairy -- which will open nationwide on January 22 -- sounds misconceived. Let's start at the top. Dwayne Johnson as the tooth fairy? This was the man who was supposed to be our next great action star. He's a charming guy, on screen and off, but Dwayne Johnson as the Tooth Fairy? Next, Dwayne Johnson in wings? Just the posters makes us twinge, while the trailer, eesh, that makes us squirm. Now, Johnson's career survived intact after he sported a...

Alexa from Pop Elegantiarum here to share a turkey for Thanksgiving. When Vibes arrived in theaters in 1988, I was predisposed to like it for a number of reasons. First, there was Cyndi Lauper in her first starring role. In the great Madonna/Cyndi debate of the mid-80s, I was firmly in Cyndi's camp. (Keep in mind that I was 12 years old at the time.) Second was her co-star, Jeff Goldblum, on whom I'd harbored a crush since watching his Seth Brundle awkwardly woo Geena Davis at the beginning of The Fly. (I chose to ignore the gallons of puss he spewed later in the film.) As an added bonus there was Julian Sands, whom I'd also mooned over since he swung from a tree in A Room with a View. Finally, add a zany Peter Falk, pathologically lying à la Vincent Ricardo, and you had the stuff of my cinematic dreams.
