Meryl Streep is celebrating 10 years of The Writers Lab with the 2024 lineup of female and non-binary screenwriters to watch.
Academy Award winner Streep has funded The Writers Lab since 2014, and the program is still the only offering in the world dedicated exclusively to elevating the work of women and non-binary screenwriters over the age of 40. Nicole Kidman has also supported the Lab, which is the only program in the world for mid-career screenwriters.
This year, the program is working with 14 writers across 12 projects, with Labs now operational in the U.S., Canada, U.K., and Europe. The 14 selected women screenwriters will gather in early November in Saugerties, New York to focus on tools and strategies to navigate the ever-shifting landscape of professional opportunities and build sustainable careers.

Philip Glass has announced his new album, simply titled Philip Glass Solo, out January 26th via Orange Mountain Music.
The retrospective project sees Glass revisiting some of his most acclaimed piano compositions, which he re-recorded at his home studio during the Covid-19 pandemic. It features “Opening,” which originally appeared on the 1982 album Glassworks; his “Metamorphosis” series; and a reworked version of “Truman Sleeps” from the soundtrack to The Truman Show.
“This record revisits my works for piano. From 2020-2021, I had time at home to practice the works I have played for many years,” Glass said in a statement about the album. “This record is both a time capsule of 2021, and a reflection on decades of composition and practice. In other words, a document on my current thinking about the music.”
He continued, “There is also the question of place. This is my piano, the instrument on which most of the music was written.

Rosamund Pike has a penchant for playing determined women navigating oppressive male-dominated environments, from the femme fatale of “Gone Girl” to war photographer Marie Colvin in last year’s “A Private War.” In the latest example, “Radioactive,” Pike delivers a powerful embodiment of another tragic hero named Marie. As pioneering physicist and chemist Marie Curie, Pike delivers a dazzling performance rich with the struggles of a life defined by perilous discoveries and great personal loss. As directed by Marjane Satrapi, — but Pike helps fuse it together.
“Radioactive” sets out to achieve many things at once. It begins as a stodgy period piece, tracking Polish immigrant Maria Sklodowska to Paris in the 1890s, where the medical student is evicted from her lab for using its instruments for eccentric experiments with uranium. However, once she finds an essential partner in crime with Pierre Curie (an understated Sam Riley), she begins to cultivate...

There’s almost no such thing as a perfect horror anthology. By definition, the quality of the stories is going to vary so that even in those beloved anthologies where every segment might be considered good—your Trick ’r Treats and Creepshows, for example—we tend to rank our favorites and least favorites. There’s an old maxim that states that any anthology is only as good as its worst segment, but that’s an ideology to which I’ve never subscribed. My experience has always been that the good segments tend to stand out, while the weaker ones melt away in my memory. The beauty of even an uneven anthology is that each new segment offers a blank slate: a chance to course correct after a weak entry or to build on a strong one.

Think that three-carat cushion-cut diamond engagement ring that Matthew Koma just gave Hilary Duff is impressive? That beauty is nothing compared to Hilary's net worth. Ever since she relocated to Hollywood at the tender age of 6 to begin her acting career, the former Disney Channel starlet has been raking in revenue from TV shows, movies, albums, novels, and fashion lines, even earning the 72nd spot on the Forbes Celebrity 100 list in 2007 for making $12 million that year alone. But that was so yesterday - how much is the 31-year-old Younger star worth now? Let's break it down.
After playing several small roles in movies like Playing by Heart, Casper Meets Wendy, and The Soul Collector, Hilary got her big break in 2001 when she was cast as the titular character in Disney Channel's mega hit TV show Lizzie McGuire. The show ran for two seasons and 65 episodes, even inspiring a movie in 2003 that grossed over $55 million worldwide.

Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Vladimir Durán's So Long Enthusiasm (2017), which is receiving an exclusive global online premiere on Mubi, is showing from July 5 - August 4, 2018 as a Special Discovery. It’s become almost commonplace to observe that Kafka’s novella Metamorphosis isn’t about an ugly-looking bug, but instead about the inner workings of a family in a time of crisis. When we can’t depend on the support of others, what personal inner resources might we reveal?A similar question drives the Colombian filmmaker Vladimir Durán’s feature debut, So Long Enthusiasm (2017), in which members of a tight-knit family—three sisters in their 20s and an eleven-year-old boy, Axel (Camilo Castiglione)—find themselves cooped up in their apartment in Buenos Aires, with guests and friends coming and going, as their mother, Margarita (Rosario Bléfari) convalesces, locked up in her bedroom.“Dysfunctional...

You don’t have to be trapped in a cryostasis pod for time to pass unnervingly quickly. Instead, why not just remind yourself that it’s been close to twenty years since we hung out with the Planet Express crew!
Luckily, the dry spell of Matt Groenig characters ended in 2018 with Netflix's Disenchantment, an animated series that’s set to do for fantasy what Futurama did for science-fiction. Still there's no replacement for the original, pure, uncut Futurama. That was a show staffed by writers with degrees in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics, who gleefully plumbed the depths of their geekdom for obtuse references to delight a tiny fraction of the audience. Scream Factory’s new Blu-ray release of two Italian films from 1990, the mad scientist creature feature Metamorphosis and the haunted house movie Beyond Darkness, may very well be the first time many horror fans have ever heard of either movie. The major common factor between the two is the presence of actor Gene Lebrock as the lead in both. In fact, these movies represent two of his seven credited acting roles, which means that by picking up Scream Factory’s double feature Blu-ray disc, you will effectively own more than 20% of Gene Lebrock’s filmography. It’s important to set goals.
