Hollywood star Jake Gyllenhaal looks muscular in the middle of what appears to be an underground fighting ring in the first look of ‘Road House’. Later, his character takes on a large group of adversaries in a dimly-lit parking lot. He hits an antagonist in the face and sarcastically asks, “Oo, I just slapped you, are you alright?” before proceeding to obliterate the rest of the group with his agile mixed martial arts skills, reports Entertainment Weekly.
The project is a remake of the 1989 action movie of the same name starring Patrick Swayze. In that film, a security guard protects a roadside bar in Missouri from a malicious local businessman. Details on the remake are scarce, but Gyllenhaal’s character is that of an ex-UFC fighter, and the film is set in Florida this time around.
Doug Liman directed the project, with Daniela Melchior, Billy Magnussen, and UFC star Conor McGregor as co-stars.

Amazon has just given us a sneak peek at the much-anticipated ‘Road House’ remake, set to premiere on Prime Video in 2024. The movie, a fresh take on the 1989 classic, showcases Jake Gyllenhaal in a powerhouse role, looking more buff than ever.
In this remake, Gyllenhaal steps into the shoes of Elwood Dalton, a former UFC fighter who finds himself as a bouncer in a Florida roadhouse. The teaser, part of Prime Video’s sizzle reel for its 2024 lineup, gives us a glimpse of Gyllenhaal’s intense physical transformation for the role.
While fans might be thrilled to see Gyllenhaal’s new character, the release strategy for Road House has stirred up some controversy. Originally hoped to hit theaters, the film will now debut directly on Prime Video. This decision reportedly didn’t sit well with Gyllenhaal and director Doug Liman, who believed the film had big-screen potential, especially after positive test screenings.

Audiences were given small glimpses of the new Road House remake when Jake Gyllenhaal was shown to be filming scenes for his character’s Mma career at UFC 285. The public would get to see the fighting shape Gyllenhaal is now in, which amazingly puts his physique in Southpaw to shame. Additionally, the crew would film a weigh-in where Gyllenhaal’s Elwood Dalton plays up his intensity for the attending crowd. The movie is slated to premiere on Prime Video next year, although, a trailer has yet to be released.

Jake Gyllenhaal stars in Doug Liman’s remake/reimagining/resomething of Road House – but it won’t be seeing a cinema screen.
Not everyone’s been keen on the news that there’s a remake of the much-loved 1980s hit Road House on the way. After all, the original – directed by the sublimely-named Rowdy Herrington – gave the late and much-missed Patrick Swayze one of his most famous roles.
The new Road House gives that part to a bulked-up Jake Gyllenhaal, and he’s going to be going toe-to-toe with an antagonist played by Connor McGregor. It’s former UFC fighter McGregor’s acting debut, and also in the ensemble are Daniela Melchior and Billy Magnussen.
The plot remains familiar: a man called Dalton is hired to work at a Road House (see what they did there?) which is being targeted by not very nice people. Those not very nice people...

The Jake Gyllenhaal/ Doug Liman remake of Road House seems destined for a streaming premiere. The news comes courtesy of Variety and was buried in a piece they wrote about the severing of producer Joel Silver’s relationship with Amazon Studios. According to the report, one of the reasons Silver was fired was due to rather heated discussions with people working for the studios over the films he was involved in, which were apparently bad enough to be considered verbal abuse. One of the things Silver was allegedly most upset over was the fact that Amazon is reportedly planning to release Road House straight-to-streaming through their Amazon MGM banner. This is despite the film being the highest testing film in director Doug Liman’s career, which is saying something as he also directed The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow, Swingers, Go, and Mr & Mrs Smith.

Some rather strange reports are circulating around the remake of Road House, ranging from the firing of its producer to using AI to finish it.
Hollywood is, of course a buzzing hive of gossip at the best of times, but a particularly strange couple of morsels emerged from Tinseltown on the 30th November. According to a Variety report, veteran producer Joel Silver has been fired from Amazon, the mega corporation which owns film studio MGM.
Before he was (allegedly) ousted, Silver was working on Road House, a remake of the 1989 action thriller which he’d also produced, as well as Play Dirty, a crime thriller starring Mark Wahlberg. Anonymous sources told Variety that Silver was fired for being “verbally abusive” to a pair of female executives.
Named sources close to Silver, meanwhile – private investigator Anthony Pellicano and attorney Bryan Freedman – refute this story. Pellicano says, “The parting of the ways is amicable.

Variety has reported that Joel Silver has been fired from several projects being developed for Amazon, including Jake Gyllenhaal’s Road House remake and Mark Wahlberg’s Play Dirty. The once-iconic producer was behind some of the biggest movies of the ’80s and ’90s, including Commando, Lethal Weapon, Predator, and Die Hard, but he hasn’t been quite as prolific in recent years.
According to Variety’s sources, Joel Silver was fired for being verbally abusive to two female executives, including Amazon Studios’ Head of Marketing Sue Kroll and Amazon’s Head of Film, Streaming and Theatrical Courtenay Valenti. However, other sources say that Amazon is “retaliating against the producer after he pushed back on the studio’s calls to use artificial intelligence to finish a movie during the strike.“

Shane Black’s latest thriller, Play Dirty, is getting a new producer.
Amazon, which is backing the feature, is in negotiations to tap Jules Daly to replace Joel Silver after the streaming giant parted ways with the veteran moviemaker over claims of verbal abuse.
Silver was steering Play Dirty, a feature seen as a comeback vehicle for both him and longtime collaborator Black, who is writing and directing for Amazon. Simultaneously, he also was producing the Doug Liman-directed remake of Road House, this one starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Road House had completed shooting and is deep in post-production, with expectations of hitting sometime next year. Play Dirty is expected to begin shooting next year.
Amazon MGM Studios declined to comment. An insider said Silver had completed work on Road House and was no longer involved in Play Dirty. Variety first reported the news of Silver’s departure.

For the past few years, Joel Silver has kept a relatively low profile, his most recent credit on the little-seen “SuperFly” remake of 2018. Still, the hard-charging producer behind some of the biggest hits of the ’80s and ’90s was attempting to mount a comeback. And his prospects looked promising with a series of feature film and TV projects at Amazon that were based on Donald E. Westlake’s Parker noir crime novels.
Alas, the Silver comeback has hit a snag. Sources say Amazon has fired the polarizing Hollywood figure from at least two films — one starring Mark Wahlberg, the other Jake Gyllenhaal — for being verbally abusive to two female executives. But sources close to Silver say Amazon is retaliating against the producer after he pushed back on the studio’s calls to use artificial intelligence to finish a movie during the strike. Rege-Jean Page is to play Simon Templar, as Doug Liman is the latest to get his hands on The Saint. So to speak.
After enjoying significant success on the small screen – hello Roger Moore! – the TV series The Saint made the jump to blockbuster cinema in the back end of the 1990s. That was when Val Kilmer took on the role of Simon Templar, the career choice given at the time for him exiting what became Batman & Robin.
Phillip Noyce directed The Saint, but plans for a big screen franchise were muted by the less than stellar box office receipts, and the lack of a bunch of people at Paramount Pictures clamouring for a sequel.

Paramount has signed “The Bourne Identity” filmmaker Doug Liman to direct the upcoming crime thriller “The Saint,” which will star Regé-Jean Page in a new imagining of the 1920s book series created by Leslie Charteris.
“The Saint” takes its name from the nickname of its protagonist, Simon Templar, a thief for hire who travels around the world serving as a modern day Robin Hood, stealing from the rich and protecting the powerless.
Charteris’ novels were adapted into a hit British 1960s TV series that became Roger Moore’s biggest claim to fame before he became James Bond. Paramount also adapted the books into a 1997 film starring Val Kilmer.
Page will also serve as an executive producer on the film, with Lorenzo Di Bonaventura and Brad Kervoy. The late Paramount Pictures chief Robert Evans, who died in 2019, is also listed as a posthumous producer. “Black Adam” screenwriters Rory Haines and Sohrab...

It’s a lean month for new original content on HBO/Max. November will see the return of two scripted series in Julia and Rap Sh!t, both of which are debuting their respective second seasons, but this month’s fresh highlight is likely to be Bookie, a new comedy series from the partnership of The Big Bang Theory creator Chuck Lorre, and Nick Bakay. The show tracks an LA bookie called Danny (Sebastian Maniscalco), whose business is in peril as California movies to legalize sports gambling.
Elsewhere in November, there quite a few interesting documentaries to keep an eye on, and two that jump out as “must watch”. The first is Albert Brooks: Defending My Life, which chronicles the aging comedian’s life and career. The second is the previously-released Little Richard: I Am Everything, which tries to peel back the whitewashed canon of Richard Penniman in a true...

Mr. & Mrs. Smith has to be one of the biggest movies never to get a sequel. Having grossed nearly $500 million worldwide, a follow-up would have seemed like a no-brainer. Filmed during happier times for the now divorced Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, the movie starred the gorgeous pair as sexy married spies who think their occupations are secret from their unknowing spouse. Assigned to kill each other, when they start fighting, they find the spark their marriage has been missing, and they team up to take on their crooked handlers.
According to the movie’s writer, Simon Kinberg, whom I spoke to recently via Zoom, there was a notion to do a sequel, but no one could figure out how to follow up the relatively close-ended story. “The strength of the first movie is it’s a love story; they are, you know, falling back in love with each...

There’s bound to be blood on the bar room floor when Doug Liman’s Road House remake starts a rumble in theaters. According to FilmRatings.com, the update starring Jake Gyllenhaal is Rated R for violence throughout, pervasive language, and some nudity. Today’s Road House remake rating clearly indicates that Liman won’t be holding back when the film punches its way into cinemas, and Gyllenhaal’s transformation into a chiseled behemoth won’t go to waste.
The original Road House starred Patrick Swayze as Dalton, a “cooler” hired to help clean up The Double Deuce, one of the rowdiest bars in Missouri. The film has become a cult favorite over the years, and there have been various attempts at remaking the movie. Prime Video says the new take will star Gyllenhaal as a former UFC fighter who takes a job as a bouncer at a roadhouse in the Florida Keys.

Pro wrestler Terry Funk has died, according to WWE and pro wrestler Mick Foley. Funk was 79 years old.
Along with wrestling, the highly respected performer worked in film, including multiple Sylvester Stallone projects as far back as 1978’s “Paradise Alley.” Funk also appeared in “Over the Top,” did stunts in “Rocky III” and choreographed the climactic fight in “Rocky V.”
Funk was also featured in the cult classic film “Road House” and Johnny Knoxville’s “The Ringer.” He also had TV roles on shows such as “Quantum Leap” and “Swamp Thing.”
Funk was best known in his later years for pioneering “hardcore” wrestling, which involves using weapons and sharp objects, such as barbed wire, to both simulate and cause actual damage in order to increase the drama in a match. This often involved copious amounts of bleeding. Funk was also infamous for wrestling multiple “retirement” matches before quickly coming back afterward.

In 2023, Ryan studies what he calls “the lowest-grossing, most forgotten film of [Lynch’s] career.” Ryan’s Lost Highway: The Fist of Love is every bit as enthralling and insightful as Your Laura Disappeared. The author zeroes in on the elements of Lost Highway that turned off most (but not all) audiences in 1997 but are titillating new (and revisiting) viewers today. Ryan should know; he was one of those who looked away in the nineties: “The first time I saw it,...

Roberto Sneider, whose credits include “You’re Killing Me Susana” and “Dos Crímenes,” has been tapped to direct multi-generational family drama “Blood Knot,” which stars Michael Douglas and Cameron Douglas. Emmy and Tony nominated actor David Morse, Michael Stahl-David and Walker Scobell have joined the cast.
Screen Media will be presenting the project to buyers at the Cannes Film Festival.
The film is based on Bob Rich’s novel “Looking Through Water” and is adapted for the screen by Rowdy Herrington (“Road House”). It follows a father who, in an attempt to reconnect with his estranged son, invites him to Belize to compete in a father-son fishing competition.
Sneider replaces Howard Deutch, who was originally announced as director, but had to drop out due to a scheduling conflict.
The film is produced by Stan Spry of Cartel. Eric Woods and Robert Mitas (“Ratched”) also serve as producers. Screen Media’s David Fannon...

When Jon Favreau made "Iron Man" in 2008, he, like many, assumed it might be the last time audiences ever saw the character on the big screen. As such, he included a few cute in-jokes that were never really meant to be extrapolated into future movies. One was the post-credits stinger when Iron Man was approached by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) about joining a team called the Avengers Initiative. Favreau has admitted in interviews that it was meant to be nothing more than a wink to fans, and not a promise of things to come.
The other in-joke was the film's last line of dialogue. When asked if he knew anything about the mysterious armor-clad superhero that had been rocketing around the world disarming terrorists, Tony Stark winked and said out loud "I am Iron Man." In superhero comics, his secret identity would have been vital. With that single line of dialogue,...

Guy Ritchie is, as the kids say, booked and busy.
Fresh off “The Covenant” and the long-delayed “Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre,” the suddenly prolific British genre filmmaker has a new project set up by Black Bear International. The new film, with a title and plot under-wraps, is being prepped for buyers at Cannes and will mark a class reunion of sorts. The big-budget actioner will star Jake Gyllenhaal of “The Covenant” and both Henry Cavill and Eiza González, who feature in the upcoming “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.”
Ritchie said “There’s something special that happens when you collaborate with the same partners regularly: you build a shorthand and a trust that lets everybody do their best work. Jake, Henry and Eiza are all astonishingly talented, committed, and engaging actors. This is going to be an action-packed movie that is both intellectually stimulating and physically exhilarating.”

Exclusive: Amid simmering unease over the impact of the writers’ strike, the upcoming Cannes market is getting a shot in the arm with the arrival of Guy Ritchie’s next project, a big-budget untitled action movie which will star Henry Cavill (Man Of Steel), Oscar nominee Jake Gyllenhaal (Spider-Man: Far From Home) and Eiza González (Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw).
Plot details and title are being kept (largely) under wraps but we hear the story, which is said to be laced with Ritchie’s trademark humor, will revolve around two extraction specialists who must plan an escape path for a high-level female negotiator. This will be one of — if not the — biggest-budget projects at the market with Black Bear International launching world sales today.
The movie will see Ritchie re-teaming with Cavill, Gyllenhaal and Gonzalez after recent collaborations. The new project comes hot on the heels of April’s U.

Movie producers usually take out cast insurance on their stars to protect themselves and the production against potential costs, should an accident or some other unfortunate event prevent the actors from filming. Though Tom Cruise has developed a reputation for doing his own death-defying stunts — to the point where he'll even casually stand on a flying plane for a simple promo — he's the exception to the rule. Producers and studios generally don't want stars on the outside of planes, even when their role calls for it, as was the case on "Point Break."
The original "Point Break," starring Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves, involves a fair amount of thrill-seeking behavior, such as surfing and, yes, skydiving. Reeves plays Johnny Utah, a quarterback-turned-fbi-agent with a bad knee who infiltrates a group of mask-wearing bank robbers, the Ex-Presidents, led by Swayze's mononymous Bodhi.
It seems Swayze took up his character's penchant for jumping out of planes,...

Jake Gyllenhaal may have perished by his own hand as Mysterio, but it would seem his greatest weakness is wing-eating etiquette, as he called out fellow MCUer Elizabeth Olsen over her daintier habits.
Jake Gyllenhaal appeared on the most recent episode of First We Feast’s Hot Ones partly to promote his new movie, Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant. While moving up the Scoville scale and somehow suffering leg cramps, Jake Gyllenhaal observed a few non-food items around the table, including Wet Ones and toothpicks. “People aren’t allowed to [do that]! Who fucking used Wet Ones? What is that? Fuck that! What asshole used a toothpick?”
When Sean Evans revealed that it was Elizabeth Olsen, Jake Gyllenhaal quickly pulled back. “Oh, sorry, Elizabeth! She’s like the literally least asshole I’ve ever met so I’m sorry! Absolutely I’m walking that back.” He then requested 14 Apollos as punishment, referring...

Jake Gyllenhaal has spoken about the creative process of working with British director Guy Ritchie that forced him to “let go”.
Gyllenhaal stars as a US army sergeant in Ritchie’s latest film, The Covenant, in which he and an Afghan interpreter take on Taliban forces.
During a new interview on the popular YouTube show Hot Ones, the actor was asked whether it was “daunting” or “liberating” working with a director who gives actors “a lot of space to explore”.
“The thing that I love about my job is that you get to work with so many different minds,” Gyllenhaal responded.
“With Guy, it was like nothing I’d ever done. He said to me, ‘Don’t memorise any of your lines,’ and the script came in at 50 pages. It wasn’t even a fully written script.”
He continued: “Usually, scripts are like 110 pages, and I was like, ‘What is this?...
