Among the most influential and imitated movies of the last 25 years, The Blair Witch Project has never looked right on home video or DVD. That's not us saying it. We love the grainy whip pans and gushes of snot that The Blair Witch uses to burrow into your terror centers.

When Deep Silver re-formed developer Free Radical Design a few years ago, there was hope that we’d see a return of the TimeSplitters franchise. Sadly, that return is now up in the air, as Embracer Group (which owns Deep Silver) has now closed Free Radical Design.
Per Video Games Chronicle, there were reports weeks ago that the Nottingham-based company was potentially being closed, due to company-wide cuts at Embracer and its owned publishers. The website for Free Radical Design today has effectively confirmed those reports, with the website now reading “404 Company Not Found :-(“.
As mentioned, it’s not clear what Free Radical’s closure will mean for the future of TimeSplitters, which original founders Steve Ellis and David Doak had aimed to revive alongside the revival of the studio.
The first incarnation of Free Radical Design began in 1999, where the team developed the TimeSplitters series for the PlayStation 2. A mix of sci-fi,...

It’s been well over a year now since we learned that UK company Second Sight Films was working on a brand new restoration of 1986 classic The Hitcher, the company tracking down the original camera negative and allowing for a 4K Uhd and Blu-ray release. But what’s the latest update on Second Sight’s hotly anticipated release, here in mid-2023?
The company updates in a series of tweets this week, “Nearing end of the grading stage, a final session with Robert [Harmon] being scheduled soon. Release / Pre-order date Tbc.”
Second Sight also shared some comments from The Hitcher director Robert Harmon, who provides an exciting preview of the restoration-in-progress. Harmon writes…
“Stunned by how great it looks… beautiful work!! Really, this movie has no business looking this good considering how ancient the elements are. Thanks to everyone for dedication way beyond anything I could ever have hoped for.”

Directed by Harry Bromley-Davenport, who co-wrote the story with Michel Parry, and written for the screen by Iain Cassie and Robert Smith, is a cult film that, in my view, is long overdue a new release, and this Second Sight project is worth the wait. It tells the story of a man who is abducted by alien lifeforms and three years afterwards he returns to his home, not the man he once was. It’s a gem of b-movie gory horror, with an unnerving tone, nasty sequences and some dated yet effective special effects. The practical gore effects are especially fun to watch, even 36 years later. If you are unaware of the film, and so unaware...

“TimeSplitters” is a trio of first-person shooter titles developed by Free Radical Design in the early 2000s. Critics at the time praised its art style, humor, and strong multiplayer mode, comparing it favorably to the classic 1997 shooter “Goldeneye.”

Nope, this isn’t Et, The Extraterrestrial, not by a long shot. Guest reviewer Lee Broughton offers an assessment of Harry Bromley Davenport’s British cult sci-fi shocker of modest means, a show that would be pure exploitation if not for some creditable performances. It’s nasty but has a basic competence and is not just more cynical grist for the mill. ‘Phone Home,’ my Aunt Fannie: sometimes the difference between a thriller like this and a higher-profile classic is just pretension.

Guest reviewer Lee Broughton assesses the Armenian director Sergei Parajanov’s poetic and metaphor-filled biopic about his countryman Sayat Nova, the Armenian poet-troubadour. This new disc edition offers both versions of the picture, Parajanov’s original and the Soviet-approved version cut by seven minutes. As we learn, if a Soviet film director found favor internationally, they often landed in trouble back home.

An unexpected side effect of the recently lowered barrier to entry into game development is that it dilutes the amount of infamy available for individual titles. While there were plenty of bad games in the pre-App Store and pre-Greenlight eras, the true disasters are known far and wide for their lack of quality alone. These days, true disasters are everywhere, and externalities like dishonest or litigious developers are required to leave the kind of impression that Superman 64 left just by existing. Take Past Cure, for example. It’s a terrible game that will disappoint anyone drawn in by its striking screenshots and somewhat promising description, but it will be immediately forgotten, because it’s at least exactly what was advertised, albeit the worst possible form of it.
If I had to pin down the root cause of the game’s woes, I’d point to its minimal understanding of its own identity.

Brought to you by the Lorimar Film Entertainment, the company responsible for such unforgettable motion pictures as “Action Jackson”, “The Last Starfighter”, and “The Boy Who Could Fly”, director Joel “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” Zwick’s tepid 1989 comedy “Second Sight” probably has more in common with Lorimar’s wonky television output than their aforementioned cinematic efforts. This may have something to do with the presence of both John Larroquette (“Night Court”) and Bronson Pinchot (“Perfect Strangers”), two actors whose talents are probably better suited to the small screen. And while I wouldn’t necessarily call this flick an action movie, it employs just enough “buddy cop” conventions to qualify as such in my book. The film follows the exploits of the Second Sight Detective agency, a private investigate firm that comes packaged with an amazing gimmick: Bobby (Pinchot) is a certified psychic with a host of powers at his disposable,...

Stargate: Universe: Seasons 1 & 2
DVD, 20th Century Fox
There's no shame in being a cancelled TV show these days. Where science fiction is concerned, it can almost be considered a badge of honour, as in cases such as Joss Whedon's Firefly or the dark X-Files follow-up Millennium. Let's not forget that Star Trek got yanked off the air, too. One of many spinoff series from the silly but entertaining 1994 Kurt Russell blockbuster, Stargate: Universe took on a darker, more serious tone, marooning a large group of explorers (including Robert Carlyle as the resident angry genius) on a huge and ancient spacecraft of unknown origin in a distant part of the universe. After a shaky start, the show developed into something much better than expected, with the unwilling and unprepared crew regularly at risk from internal power struggles, alien attacks and mysterious forces. Unfortunately, it wasn't quite the weekly...
