In 80s action movies, popular songs were played during big scenes, creating iconic moments and adding tension and excitement to the story. Songs like "Eye of the Tiger" in Rocky III and "Danger Zone" in Top Gun became anthems of the movies, setting the tone and becoming enduring hits. Some songs, like "Fight the Power" in Do the Right Thing, were specifically created for the film and added to the powerful and intense scenes, enhancing the overall impact of the movie.
One of the staples of great 80s action movies was often a popular song that would play during a big scene or a montage. The 80s saw a big shift in the action genre, with many of the most popular action films of all time being released in that decade. The Terminator and Terminator II, Scarface, Highlander, and Top Gun are just a few of the incredible action films...

The 35th edition of Discovery Channel’s Shark Week is officially underway, marking the return of the annual fan-favorite weeklong shark celebration. Shark Week began in 1988 as a fun means of educating audiences on the aquatic predator, counteracting the negative representations of sharks in popular culture that began with the seminal aquatic horror feature Jaws (now available to stream on Peacock).
Jaws didn’t just make people afraid to go into the water; its massive blockbuster success inspired an enduring wave of “sharksploitation” horror that’s become a summer mainstay. Naturally, in celebration of Shark Week, this week’s streaming picks bring the aquatic terror. Shudder’s new documentary Sharksploitation breaks down this subgenre further, packed with insights from filmmakers and scientists alike, for further viewing to complete your Shark Week watchlists.

Project Gemini is the latest genre film to come out of Russia. I’ve reviewed several Russian science fiction films from Attraction to Sputnik to The Blackout with very mixed results. The trailer, and the fact that Well Go USA had picked it up for US and Canadian release, convinced me to give it a look.
Three years after a deadly virus has destroyed much of Earth’s plant life humanity’s fate rests on a pair of alien artefacts uncovered by scientists and kept secret until now. A revolutionary engine that makes deep space travel feasible, and an orb that may have been the seed that brought life to Earth. With this, they plan to create a new home for mankind.

Hello, dear readers! To paraphrase a popular movie, “We’re in the Endgame now,” as Halloween is now merely only a few days away. If you’re looking for some last-minute viewing ideas to get you to the spooky season finish line, we definitely have a great array of choices heading home on Tuesday. The biggest recommendation that I can personally make in regard to perfect Halloween movie experiences is the Wnuf Halloween Special, which is getting a killer Blu-ray release tomorrow. Arrow Films is giving Dario Argento’s Deep Red a 4K upgrade this week, too, and Severin Films is showing love to both An Angel for Satan and Beyond Darkness.
Other releases for October 26th include Don’t Breathe 2, The Amazing Mr. X, Boardinghouse, Eye of the Devil, Skull: The Mask, Frankenstein’s Daughter, and Underworld: Limited Edition 5-Movie Collection.

Consider the oeuvre of Clyde Anderson, or as he’s known in the real world, Claudio Fragasso: Monster Dog. Beyond Darkness. Troll 2, fer chrissakes. Now imagine a slasher/psychological thriller with one foot on Elm Street, one in a Skinemax extravaganza, and no ties to reality and you have Night Killer (1990), Fragasso’s opus on memory loss and murder. And if you guessed that Severin Films has a brand spanking new Blu-ray out to document this insanity, you’d be right.
Originally released in Italy in August, Night Killer was sold as Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3 in the grand Italian tradition, although it has nothing whatsoever to do with that franchise (in the same grand tradition). What it does offer is a mixture of misdirection, insanity, bloodshed, and expected sleaziness. What it does not proffer is boredom.

A year before their jaw-dropper Shocking Dark, director Bruno Mattei (Violence in a Women's Prison) and co-writers Claudio Fragasso & Rossella Drudi (Zombie 4) first collaborated on the brain-melting mash-up of Predator, Robocop and a Philippines war movie that is... Robowar!

If you have even a passing acquaintance with Italian horror, the odds are pretty good that you’ve come across the work of Claudio Fragasso. Like many Italian auteurs, he’s gone by many names; perhaps you know him as Clyde Anderson, director of the Alice Cooper werewolf tale Monster Dog (1984), or Drake Floyd, helmer of the legendary Troll 2 (1990). There’s also his work as a writer on fellow Italian Bruno Mattei’s The Other Hell (’81) and Rats: Night of Terror (’84). But if you’ve been following Severin Films as of late (and for shame if you haven’t), Fragasso has his hands all over their latest trio of Blu-ray releases: Shocking Dark (’89), Zombi 3 (’88), and the one where he slips into the director’s chair again, Zombie 4: After Death (’89), a film light on imagination yet heavy on high octane zombie mowdowns.

Severin Films do a great service for those of us who aren’t as familiar with the “second tier” Italian horror filmmakers like Bruno Mattei. I just haven’t seen much of his work, but of what I have, The Other Hell (1981) is my favorite. I should say it’s my favorite film of his that borrows from Carrie and The Exorcist; apparently I need to start a new list of faves that are influenced by Aliens and The Terminator, starting with Shocking Dark (1989), a jaw-dropping mush of both that manages to entertain almost as much as either.
Aka Terminator II in certain markets, the term “rip-off” was pretty much perfected by Shocking Dark; but this was neither Mattei or co-screenwriters Claudio Fragasso and Rossella Drudi (Troll 2) fault, but rather producers eager to jump on Cameron’s bandwagon and hijack it before it reached the next station. This Tuesday, our fine friends at Severin Films are releasing a trio of Rosella Drudi/Claudio Fragasso penned classics of late '80s Italian horror. Perhaps the most impressive and crazy entertaining of the trio is Burno Mattei's Shocking Dark, a blatant Aliens ripoff set in the near future in a Venice choked by pollution. In the film, a team called the Mega Force is deployed to neutralize an unknown threat beneath the streets of Venice, only to find themselves as prey for some slimy rubber frog alien creatures. Leading the commando force is Koster, played by '80s Italian cinema icon Geretta Geretta (Demons). To celebrate the release of the film on Blu-ray, Severin have recreated...

Toy Fair is an annual trade show where hundreds of toy companies get together to showcase their latest innovations for buyers and press. The following is a photo recap from the Neca booth. To see the rest of our coverage, click Here.
The Neca booth called out to me from afar with their lifesize foam figures of Deadpool, Harley Quinn, and Spider-Man. Unlike most items of that size, these were not just for display purposes. You can actually purchase each of these figures for around $1,000 each. Aside from the price, a total lack of space, and a wife I’d like to keep, I could certainly see myself a collector splurging on one of these because the quality is astounding.
Luckily, the attention to detail carries over to their much smaller scale collectibles. Their Evil Dead II Ultimate Edition 2-figure set was one of the most fun things to photograph at Toy Fair,...

In 1989, Italian director Bruno Mattei made an amalgam of Aliens and The Terminator. We look back at a wonderfully bad film...
If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then a 1989 Italian film called Shocking Dark pays James Cameron the ultimate compliment: it openly steals from not one but two of his 80s hits.
Now, it’s no secret that B-movie filmmakers have long taken ‘inspiration’ from hit genre movies - Star Wars, Alien, Jaws and Mad Max are some of the most imitated films of the 70s and 80s, spawning such cult B-movies as StarCrash, 1990: Bronx Warriors and Contamination.
Shocking Dark, on the other hand, occupies its own special place in movie history. We’re not just talking about an attempt to evoke the general atmosphere of a successful film here - we’re talking about the wholesale recreation of entire sequences. As an example, consider the following...

Unofficial sequel Alien Identity is set after Aliens, brings back Newt and reintroduces actors Carrie Henn and Ricco Ross...
James Cameron, like many Alien fans, was incensed by Alien 3's decision to kill off Newt and Hicks, two supporting characters that made Aliens such a perfect sequel. But a new, unofficial tribute film called Alien Identity will attempt to rewrite history, saving Newt from her grisly fate at the start of Alien 3 and sending her off on a new sci-fi adventure.
The story will pretend that the events of Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection were mere "cryo-sleep nightmares" and will catch up with Newt 14 years after the events of Aliens. This time, Elle Viane Sonnet will play the now 20-something Newt; Carrie Henn, who played Newt in Aliens, will return as her mother Anne in a flashback sequence.

As the proliferation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the slow, drawn-out birth of DC’s Dawn of Justice has proven, shared universes and the friendships therein are all the rage. Especially these days, it seems all we want is to see our favourite heroes hanging out, whether it be the tentative bromance between Tony Stark and Bruce Banner, or love stories like The Vision and Scarlet Witch. Don’t forget the multi-property or corporation crossover, either: success stories such as Batman vs Predator, Judge Dredd vs Aliens and the Justice League/Avengers giving fans everywhere cause to celebrate. If there’s one thing comic book fans love, it’s a good crossover!
That isn’t to say that there’s not trouble in paradise, though. For every Batman vs Predator, there’s a Superman vs Predator; for every Judge Dredd vs Aliens, a Batman vs Aliens 2.

So the new Terminator movie has an official title. And it’s… interesting. Hey, listen: Book, cover, don’t judge, I get it. Maybe this time next year we’ll all be rocking Genisys T-shirts. Maybe we’ll just start spelling “genesis” as “genisys,” sort of like how you can spell it “judgment” or “judgement.” Inglourious Basterds is great, and that has two misspellings!
Still, let’s pretend for argument’s sake that Terminator: Genisys looks like the title of the fanfic spin-off you wrote back in second grade where Terminator meets Scarface and they both fight Darth Vader to save Princess Toadstool.

Usually, when a number follows a movie indicating a sequel or threequel, hopes are not that high. Exceptions being Aliens 2 and Godfather 2, both films were badass by their own right. Aliens 3 and Godfather 3? Meh. But when "Fast & Furious 6" was announced, it was a bit of a joke, I mean, how great can the 6th iteration of a franchise be? Then they announced the cast. Behold the power of "Furious" movie star Vin Diesel, whose film took the Box Office top slot during a record-breaking Memorial weekend. He's got "it" in spades. The Rock was a nice add too. Yes, it was unusually cold in many places, hence a higher movie going audience, but...

For those that are confused (which would obviously include me) the column that has the url: http://www.soundonsight.org/fantasia-2012-mike-ryans-five-most-anticipated-films/ is actually my column on the five films that I am most upset to be Missing.
This is my column on five seven films that I am most looking forward to:
1) Takashi Miike (For Love’s Sake and Ace Attorney)
For Love’s Sake (2012) Written by Takayuki Takuma, Ikki Kajiwara, Takumi Nagayasu, Directed by Takashi Miike
You really only need three words to sell For Love’s Sake: Takashi. Miike. Musical.
But here are a few more words…
Takashi Miike is beloved by the Fantasia crowd for pushing the boundaries of genre filmmaking in films like Audition, Visitor Q and Ichi the Killer, but I tend to prefer Miike when he is working in a specific sub-genre where he is forced to subvert the conventions at play in more subtle ways,...

... or to take arms against a sea of troubles - those of 3D.
As I wrote this article, heated debates broke out between my brother and I - he being strongly pro-3D and I anti-3D. He thinks within five years most movies will be filmed and projected in 3D; I disagree, stating 3D shall go the way of the dodo (once again). The 'pro' contingency believes 3D films are a better experience and far more enjoyable than 2D (normal vision). What a load of hype! It’s all to do with money. Don’t get me wrong - if people don’t attend cinemas the movie industry makes no profits and collapses – and I am definitely against this. I just say we don’t need 3D gimmicks to experience a true cinema experience. Some say 3D is a revolutionary change in the history of cinema just like the...

Aha! Busted... No, Olivia Wilde isn't about to do porn. But could she be headlining the biopic of Deep Throat's Linda Lovelace? "It would be a tremendous honour. It's such a cool role. She was a fascinating woman, where she came from Deep Throat to then working with Gloria Steinem and Nora Ephron. It's really fascinating". The biopic is currently in early stages and will be directed by Oscar-winning duo, Robert Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman. And for those confused, this is a separate project from the long gestating Lindsay Lohan Deep Throat biopic. Wilde continues the interview by stating she's very careful about what her next move is, so take this news as a possibility, but a guarantee. What say you readers? Cowboys & Aliens 2 or porno? Via E!.

You may have noticed over the month of May, Obsessed With Film has suffered an out-of-the-ordinary amount of downtime as we have been the victim of a systemic, viscious and prolonged attack on our security defences – an unforgiving Terminator chasing us everyday and who wants to give us the kind of malware that would permanently put us in the ground.
We’ve done our best to fight it but it’s been a daily battle and Owf’s webmaster and behind-the-scenes Wizard of Oz genius Peter Willis has almost had a coroner this weekend when we ran out of ideas. But after a new strategy was formed yesterday, we may now have beaten this thing (famous last words in any apocalyptic horror film right?) and the battle might be over.
I’ve been assured by people I know that there will be a Terminator II, III and IV attacks on...

Warner Bros. have just sent us this new fantastic gallery of images from their new movie. Ironclad. We were lucky enough to interview James Purfoy for the movie yesterday and that should be going up on the site in the coming days.
Ironclad is out in the UK on March 4th; it is a bloody medieval action film starring Brian Cox (Bourne Supremacy), Paul Giamatti (Barney’s Version and Shoot Em Up), James Purefoy (Resident Evil), Mackenzie Crook (Pirates), Charles Dance (Gosford Park), Jason Flemyng (Kick Ass and Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels) and Iron Man 2’s Kate Mara to name a couple.
Synopsis: Travelling back to the dark, brutal past of 13-century England, Ironclad plunges us headlong into one of the most violent, pivotal moments in English medieval history – when a few good men fought against insurmountable odds to defend their country from a megalomaniac, blood-drunk king.

Well, that's it, it seems, for the highly-anticipated return of Ridley Scott to the Alien franchise. The 73 year-old director has worked so extensively on the script by Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof and many other sources of input that the famous movie monster, known for a complicated life-cycle, has evolved itself into...nothing. The Alien Paradise project, rumoured to have an Avatar-style jungle-vibe, is now a new and original Sf movie called Prometheus, starring Noomi Rapace.
Prometheus was the Titan in Greek mythology that gave the gift of fire to mortals and subsequently got referenced a lot during the industrial revolution, most notably in Mary Shelley's alternative title for Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus, and this seems to fit in with what we have heard about the Alien prequel script featuring a race of creatures (formerly the 'Space Jockey' species found fossilised in 1979's Alien) that genetically engineer a deadly...

Even before his next film Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey releases, Ashutosh Gowariker has already moved on to his big budget project Buddha. Produced by Dr.Bhupendra Kumar Modi and directed by Gowariker, Buddha tells the journey of Gautam Buddha right from when he was known as Prince Siddhartha to his moment of enlightenment when he became Buddha. While the hunt for the actor who will play the lead role is still on, it's quite interesting to note that the film will primarily have an all-international crew except production designer Nitin Chandrakant Desai who has worked with Gowariker on most of his films. Some of the international crew members are:. David S.
