Scientist David Harrison (Jim Metzler) and his family—wife Sarah (Morgan Brittany) and their two young daughters Gwendolyn (Vanessa Pierson) and Juliet (Erin Gourlay)—have been invited to the sleepy desert town of Purgatory to troubleshoot a machine he has designed for synthesizing blood for transfusion (no more having to donate). What he doesn't know is that Purgatory is actually a town full of reclusive vampires, and he and his family are about to get caught in a civil war between those vampires who follow Jozek Mardulak (David Carradine), who wants vampires to give up the "old way" of drinking human blood, and those who follow the renegade Shane Dennis (Maxwell Caulfield), who thinks that the traditional ways of obtaining blood are preferable. Into the revolution walks Robert Van Helsing (Bruce Campbell), descendant of the famous vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing. It's going to be a hot night in Purgatory come sundown.
Sundown is based on a screenplay by John Burgess and director Anthony Hickox.
For Centuries, the Vampire Has Had to Feed on Human Blood to Survive, Hunted by Day, Hunting by Night. But as Times Change and History Evolves, so Must the Vampire. Realizing This, the Powerful and Rightwoud Count Mardulak Has Led the Last Remaining Vampires into Hiding Somewhere Out West. There, They Are to Teach Themselves to Stop Killing Humans with the Eventual Hope of One Day Living in Perfect Harmony Amongst Them. Armed with Sunblock, AVA/B Protected Glass, and Nourished with Fake Blood from a Synthesizing Plant (That Will Not Work Without the Help of a Human), the True Test of the Vampires' Brave New World Is About to Begin.
War (using wooden bullets) breaks out between the two vampire factions. Mardulak ceases fire when Jefferson (John Ireland) produces Samdy (Deborah Foreman) as a hostage. Mardulak challenges Jefferson vampire-to-vampire, revealing himself to be none other than the great Count Dracula. Unfortunately, Marudulak's gun is out of bullets. Meanwhile, David and Sarah have been breaking up furniture, which they carry to the roof and fashion a large cross. The cross kills off all of Jefferson's followers but, for some reason, none of those of Mardulak. "We have been forgiven at last!", Mardulak exclaims with tears in his eyes. In the final scene, the Harrisons leave Purgatory. Julie asks whether Shane was telling the truth about him being her daddy, and Sarah assures her that David is her dad. Mardulak hopes that all was not in vain. Van Helsing laughs about the comparison being "in vein." As the Harrisons drive away, everyone waves.
