Author and screenwriter Colo Tavernier O’Hagan has passed away. France’s Institut Lumiére shared the news that the former wife and collaborator of Bertrand Tavernier died of cancer on June 13. A César Award winner for Tavernier’s 1984 drama Un Dimanche A La Campagne, she also worked with such filmmakers as Claude Chabrol and Pierre Granier-Deferre.
Among her credits are the screenplays for her then-husband’s Une Semaine De Vacances (1980), La Passion Béatrice (1987), Dirk Bogarde-starrer Daddy Nostalgia (1990) and L’Appat (1995) — the latter scooping Berlin’s top Golden Bear prize. She also provided the French translation for 1986’s multi award-winning jazz film ‘Round Midnight.
With Chabrol, she collaborated on 1988’s Une Affaire De Femmes and with Granier-Deferre on 1995’s Le Petit Garçon. Of Irish and Franco-Spanish origin, Tavernier O’Hagan also wrote for television and penned the 2013 book about words, Les Maux Des Mots.

Almost immediately after it was released, the 2012 stealth hit Best Exotic Marigold Hotel became more a punchline than a movie. Who knew “older” people were so starved for pictures featuring gorgeously shot exotic locales, not to mention people falling in love, falling out of love, or desperately hoping for love, all while dealing with assorted problems related not just to aging but to life itself? Directed by Shakespeare in Love’s John Madden and based on the novel These Foolish Things, by Deborah Moggach, the first Marigold Hotel attracted a staunchly adult audience, apparently made up of women in particular. Naturally, then, it was s...

With a cast that included Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, and Downton Abbey's Maggie Smith and Penelope Wilton, 2011's The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel was stacked to brim with English charm, not to mention some of the nation's most stellar senior stars. This plus a bittersweet but inspiring story drove the $10 million movie to be a major hit, earning more than $136 mil worldwide and spurring talk of a sequel. With The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel 2 now in production, Fox Searchlight Pictures is proud to announce that Dench, Smith, Nighy, and Wilton will return to for the sequel, as will Dev Patel, Celia Imrie, and Ronald Pickup. But to give part two some added oomph, the ensemble is expanding to include Richard Gere, Davis Strathairn and Episodes' Tamsin Greig. Director John Madden and screenwriter Ol Parker, who adapted the first film from Deborah Moggach's novel These Foolish Things,...

American actor to join veteran British cast for followup to successful film about retirees living in an Indian hotel
• Pack your bags for The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel 2
Richard Gere is in talks to join the forthcoming sequel to 2011's surprise box office smash The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, reports Deadline.
Reports of a followup to John Madden's film about English retirees in India first emerged in October last year. The original film starred Judi Dench, Tom Wilkinson, Maggie Smith, Penelope Wilton and Bill Nighy. All but Wilkinson are expected to return when the sequel shoots early next year. Gere, should he sign on the dotted line, would play a new character.

Ol Parker knew he had his work cut out when adapting Deborah Moggach's 2004 novel "These Foolish Things" into “Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.” As he told Gold Derby, “When you’re writing a script with nine different storylines, the challenge is in keeping the audience interested. The cast helped tremendously with that. But then the challenge is in getting them.” -Insertgroups:8- But Parker, who just turned 43, couldn’t resist the idea of writing, “a romantic comedy for old people. It was so endearing to me to think of people in their 60s and 70s being as fumbling and awkward as people in their 20s. What appealed to me about this story was that it wasn’t old people doing old people things. Nor was it old people doing young people things. It was just old people being people.” The film centers around seven British retirees -- Judi Dench, Maggie Smith,...

Consider this as a huge rumor, but at least admit that it sounds great! Not just because The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is finally getting a sequel, but because some seriously good (and you already see how good in our title) cast could come on board! Helen Mirren and Colin Firth are apparently in talks to join previously announced Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Dev Patel and Bill Nighy. Yeah, take the original cast and add two great names to the list and you get what? The perfect sequel, exactly!
A month ago we revealed that Ol Parker is once again on board to pen the script for a follow-up to the original film. Now, there are rumors that director John Madden will return to direct the sequel as well.
But that’s not all. According to the latest reports, Madden and Parker are looking for an American actress possibly to round out the cast,...

On Halloween this year, news surfaced that Fox Searchlight had greenlit a sequel to their surprisingly successful adaptation of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (based on Deborah Maggoch's novel These Foolish Things) from Shakespeare in Love director John Madden. All appropriate cast members are returning from the original (watch the film to find out what that means), and now Showbiz 411 (via The Film Stage) has word that Helen Mirren and Colin Firth are in talks to join Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Dev Patel and Bill Nighy for the sequel. Also, it seems Madden will return with writer Ol Parker for the sequel. There was some discussion about moving our characters from India to a new location, but it sounds like the story will stay there and continue following Dench's exploits in the country. In addition to Mirren and Firth joining, Madden and Parker are also looking for an American actress...

It looks like the charming geriatric tale The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel gets the honor of being one of those rare comedies that gets a sequel. Movie Scope has learned the 2011 film from director John Madden and writer Ol Parker has a greenlit follow-up in development at Fox Searchlight. Based on Deborah Moggach's novel These Foolish Things, the film followed a group of British retirees - composed of British talents like Judi Dench, Tom Wilkinson, Maggie Smith and Bill Nighy - who decide to take their retirement to less the expensive and exotic India at the restore Marigold Hotel that has since fallen apart. Parker will return to script the sequel (though there's no book for it to be based on this time), but it's not clear if Madden will return to direct. Most of the original cast is expected to return as well, but there's no release window...

In case you loved The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel movie, I’m sure you’re going to love this short update.
The sequel to a 2011 British comedy directed by John Madden is definitely coming, and the good thing is that Ol Parker is once again behind the story! What also sounds good is that the original cast is more than interested in the whole thing as well.
And, just in case you’re not so familiar with the first movie, I will inform you that Judi Dench, Bill Nighy and Dame Maggie Smith were all the part of the story which centered on a group of British retirees who decide to “outsource” their retirement to less expensive and seemingly exotic India.
At this moment, we have no idea whether John Madden will return to direct the sequel, but, as we mentioned at the beginning, Ol Parker is said to be...

★★★★☆ A sterling British cast, including Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith and Tom Wilkinson, ensure that John Madden's The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011) has the feel-good factor without the cloying sentimentality of some romantic comedies. Based on Deborah Moggach's novel These Foolish Things, six English OAPs arrive in the Indian city of Jaipur in a bid to avoid stagnating in Britain. They are joined by Muriel (Smith) who has reluctantly travelled abroad for a hip operation.

HollywoodNews.com: Fox Searchlight Pictures Presidents Steve Gilula and Nancy Utley announced today that The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, financed by Fox Searchlight Pictures and Participant Media, had crossed $100 million in worldwide gross receipts on Wednesday, May 30. The film has amassed nearly $20 million in U.S. box office receipts since it began its platform release May 4th. Opening in select cities, it has become the 7th highest grossing film for Fox Searchlight Pictures in just over 3 weeks – also making it the highest grossing specialty film of 2012. Exclusive: Fox Searchlight and Participant Media just did with a low-budget film what several major studios can’t right now with high-budget tenpoles: it has an early summer hit. Its domestic cume is expected to reach $20.5M this Friday after its platform release on May 4th, and its foreign cume is $81.2M after opening there in February. Movie reviewers love surprises. We watch so many movies that it is hard to tolerate the routine and predictable. This is why some of us (okay, I mean myself) have the bad habit of starting too many positive reviews with the phrase "pleasant surprise." We delight in unexpected plot twists and non-standard endings, sometimes to the point where we overrate movies with these qualities.
I was lukewarm about The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel because after I read the press release, I felt it would hold no surprises for me whatsoever. I could predict the whole damn movie, and probably my review as well. A bunch of older British people with drab, unsatisfying lives move to India where they would be shocked and dismayed at first, but gradually would see the beauty of life and the wonders of the universe. Someone would fall in love, someone would find an unexpected friend,...

Based in India, the film adaption of the novel, ‘These Foolish Things’ by Deborah Moggach, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel shows a story of seven English retirees moving to India in hopes of a better (and cheaper!) life where they can rediscover themselves in a foreign land. There to welcome them at this falsely advertised grand retirement palace, which in fact is a rundown home, is managed by young, energetic, and blissfully in denial young man, Sonny (Dev Patel). Though the retirees all come for their own personal reasons, they all join together to become a family of sorts in a foreign land. Well, people, it’s here. Each year, starting around Memorial Day and continuing through the early weeks of summer, we find ourselves knee-deep in a period marked by the release of monstrously large popcorn flicks, movies that show off stars and special effects while raking in the dough. That’s right: it’s the season of the terminal illness drama-comedy. Oh, wait – just kidding. It’s Summer Blockbuster Season! And we’re off to a great start with Marvel’s superhero team up this weekend. Buckle up.
Let’s just get right to it. “The Avengers,” from writer-director Joss Whedon, unites almost every superhero under the Marvel banner in a fight against time and evil, in this weekend’s biggest movie (by far). Whedon, only several weeks out of receiving critical acclaim for his penning of “The Cabin in the Woods,” has created another masterpiece here. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel follows a group of retirees — Judi Dench, Tom Wilkinson, Bill Nighy, Penelope Wilton, and Maggie Smith (the latter two on loan from Downton Abbey), among others — as they attempt to "outsource" their old age by moving to India. Adapted from Deborah Moggach's novel These Foolish Things, the film finds each of them at what they thought was a dead end, either through lack of money, loss, physical infirmity, or just the wrong marriage, and then turns them around with new loves, new jobs, and new prospects in life. Director John Madden, who last gave us The Debt, chatted with Vulture about his superhero team-up, the chaos of India, and the story behind one of the film's inside jokes. You're awfully brave to be going against The Avengers, but perhaps this cast is a superhero lineup of its own kind?Right! It can't be easy to go up against The Avengers on May 4, but in its own way, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel can field a superhero lineup, as it stars British acting veterans Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, a Downton Abbey–elevated Maggie Smith, and Tom Wilkinson, among several others. (We all know that Judi Dench would be the Iron Man of the group. Incontrovertible.) Adapted from Deborah Moggach's novel These Foolish Things, Dench & Co. play British retirees who decide to move to exotic India to live out their twilight years, but their destination, the "glamorous" Marigold Hotel (run by Dev Patel), isn't quite up to snuff. In this exclusive clip, Dench enlists Bill Nighy to see if he can get her malfunctioning phone to work, and though he doesn't have much luck, the two do seem to strike some sparks together. You get it, Dame Judi.

British-Indian retirement film draws ill-served older audience, but pales against popularity of The Woman in Black
The winner
With an average cast age in their 60s, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel can hardly be said to be targeting the demographic that visits the cinema most frequently: young people. But the potency of the perennially ill-served older audience has once again been demonstrated. John Madden's comedy drama about elderly Brits seeking a cheaper retirement option in Jaipur has opened with a highly impressive £2.22m. That's certainly at the top end of expectations for a film starring Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy and Tom Wilkinson plus Slumdog Millionaire's Dev Patel.
Back in 2003, Calendar Girls kicked off with £1.88m, but the comedy benefited from huge media interest in the real stripping Women's Institute ladies. Marigold Hotel is based on existing material – Deborah Moggach's novel These Foolish Things – but awareness levels are simply not comparable.

If there’s one thing I despise about this Great Britain that I have called home for the past 6 years, it is its’ treatment of the elderly. I come from a culture where children are ostracized if they fail to provide a home within their own for their elderly parents from whence to cook up the finest curries in the land and spoil their grandchildren rotten with an unlimited supply of chocolate biscuit pudding.
So I find it utterly appalling that elderly people are left to contend with often surreal care home environments, contemptuous male nurses, Lifeline alarms manned by indifferent council workers and a constant stream of criticism over their use of public gyms and driving habits.
Whilst some of these issues are self-inflicted – why decide to go for a drive during the morning rush hour? – you can’t help but feel for those elderly people who strive to...

The Indians in this film are just so obliging, presenting a curiously old-fashioned form of cultural anaesthesia
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, John Madden's new comedy about English retirees in India, starts with an alluring mix of the exotic and the familiar: Dame Judi is on the phone in her London flat, speaking to a person in an Indian call centre who doesn't know how to accommodate the fact that her husband is dead. We chance upon Dame Maggie being marvellously racist in her wheelchair. The audience is encouraged to laugh at her absurdity, consider how times have changed, and settle into their seats.
Great Britain is not working for these people as their pension pots collapse and their children and partners disappear into the horizon. How will they find an answer? This is a beginning rich with anticipation and the potential for crossed wires, tension, redemption, the full works.

A Deborah Moggach book caught on film leads to Tulip Fever, and Ozwald Boateng makes a bid to dress Bond
Brought to book
In a brief scene in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Penelope Wilton is pictured relaxing in the garden of the eponymous Indian hotel reading a book. A quick shot reveals it's the novel Tulip Fever by Deborah Moggach, who also happened to write These Foolish Things, upon which Ol Parker based the screenplay to The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. It's a sweet in-joke and recalls the one at the end of Notting Hill, where Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant are reposing on a garden bench and she's reading Captain Corelli's Mandolin. This was, at the time, a nod to Notting Hill director Roger Michell's proposed next film – he was slated to direct the Louis de Bernières bestseller. However, illness meant Michell had to drop out and...

New poster, trailer for The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, starring Judi Dench, Tom Wilkinson, Bill Nighy, Dev Patel and Maggie Smith. John Madden directs the Fox Searchlight comedy which opens via Fox Searchlight Pictures on March 9th. Scripted by Oli Parker from the novel "These Foolish Things" by Deborah Moggach, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel follows a group of British retirees who decide to "outsource" their retirement to less expensive and seemingly exotic India. Enticed by advertisements for the newly restored Marigold Hotel and bolstered with visions of a life of leisure, they arrive to find the palace a shell of its former self. Though the new environment is less luxurious than imagined, they are forever transformed by their shared experiences, discovering that life and love can begin again when you let go of the past. Also in the cast are Celia Imrie, Penelope Wilton and Roland Pickup. Peter Czernin and Graham Broadbent produce.

Poster 2 for John Madden's The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, starring Judi Dench and Bill Nighy. The second poster is in for the Oli Parker-scripted adaptation of the Deborah Moggach novel "These Foolish Things," which also includes Tom Wilkinson, Maggie Smith, Dev Patel, Celia Imrie, Penelope Wilton and Roland Pickup. Parker helmed Shakespeare in Love, so naturally, with a solid cast like this, I'm intrigued.
