Ahead of the Academy Awards this weekend, a look back at legendary Oscars host Billy Crystal and his classic opening songs.
Conan O’Brien will hosting the 97th Oscars this weekend. It’s a pretty solid choice by the Academy after a slew of slightly dull (and even calamitous) ceremonies.
Even if O’Brien absolutely nails the gig, it’s unlikely he’ll be anywhere near as good as the best host of the modern Oscars: Billy Crystal. Crystal hosted the ceremony a total of nine times and made it look easy. His opening monologues have become iconic, thanks to his quick wit and cracking songs.
Crystal hosted the Oscars for the first time in 1990 and opened the show with a joke about the previous year’s opening act. “Is it me or are you just glad I’m not Snow White?” Crystal joked, referencing the awful sketch with Rob Lowe...

As far as crime movies go, 1990's "Goodfellas" remains the gold standard as one of the best mob movies ever made. The film offered a more humanistic perspective into the world of organized crime through the eyes of aspiring mobster Henry Hill (Ray Liotta). With this focus, "Goodfellas" offered a look at how the dangers and vices of crime impacted domestic lives, influencing the entire genre. Fortunately, for fans of "Goodfellas," there are plenty of crime movies to check out that share similar themes and sensibilities.
From sagas spanning generations of mobster families to classic rises to illicit power, there are countless crime movies like "Goodfellas." Many of these movies even share major cast members and the behind-the-scenes crew, bringing another level to these visible similarities. While each of these crime films stand proudly on their own, they also share DNA with Martin Scorsese's 1990 enduring crime story.

Shutter Island is arguably one of the best thriller movies ever made and easily one of Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio’s best collaborations. Based on Dennis Lehane’s novel of the same name, the 2010 film follows a Deputy U.S. Marshal who comes to the titular location to investigate a psychiatric facility after one of the patients goes missing.

The film received critical acclaim and was a commercial success. It also features one of the best twist endings in a thriller, complete with a hard quote that forces viewers to rethink the events leading up to the climax. As a result, it is no wonder fans haven’t forgotten the movie on its 15th anniversary and lauded Scorsese for his work. A Hawaii-set crime thriller, directed by Martin Scorsese and featuring an all-star cast, will see the filmmaker return to the mobster genre once again.
Reports of a new Martin Scorsese project have surfaced, and it looks as though the filmmaker is making a crime caper. According to Deadline, the veteran director will add a new movie about mobsters to a body of work that already includes Goodfellas, Gangs Of New York, Casino, The Departed and The Irishman.
This time around, Hawaii is the location, and Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson, stars of Jungle Cruise, and A24’s upcoming Mma drama, The Smashing Machine, reportedly brought the project to regular collaborators Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio. The pair must have liked what they heard because the whole package of story, director and stars is now being shopped around Hollywood and won’t be short of an interested party or two, we’d imagine.

Martin Scorsese is lining up a major new project, and it’s already shaping up to be one of the hottest packages in Hollywood. The legendary director is set to helm a crime drama starring Dwayne Johnson, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Emily Blunt. The film, currently untitled, will be written by journalist and author Nick Bilton and is inspired by real events.
The story focuses on a powerful and ruthless Hawaiian crime boss in the 1960s and 70s, a figure reminiscent of Robert De Niro’s Jimmy the Gent from Goodfellas. This mob leader fought to establish dominance in Hawaii’s criminal underworld, battling mainland syndicates and corporate interests while striving to protect his homeland.
The film is described as a sweeping crime saga, marking another venture into the gangster genre for Scorsese, who previously explored similar themes in The Departed and Goodfellas.

The Oscar-winning actor known for films like “Raging Bull,” “Goodfellas” and “The Godfather Part II” said that the opportunity to jump into the TV space and meet showrunner Eric Newman came through a conversation with his agent.

And as I was reading the material and so on, I committed to it,” De Niro told TheWrap. “He had good people with him, Noah Oppenheim, Michael Schmidt, and the three of these guys put this really good script together. For an actor who played one of the most famous gimmicks in the realm of pro wrestling, Dwayne Johnson’s feats in the realm of acting have been quite underwhelming. This isn’t surprising, as in the past, the WWE icon has prioritized his brand image over the quality of his movies, contributing to several forgettable action features.

Exclusive: The hot package in town is a pitch for a Martin Scorsese-directed untitled drama that would star Dwayne Johnson, Leonardo DiCaprio and Emily Blunt.
The thumbnail description: Imagine Robert De Niro’s Jimmy the Gent character from Goodfellas, but as a ruthless Hawaiian crime boss, based on a real figure, who battled encroaching rivals for control of organized crime in Hawaii.
To be written by Nick Bilton, the film focuses on a turbulent time on the island paradise when an aspiring mob boss battled rival crime factions to wrest control of the underworld of the Hawaiian islands. It was a bloody battle, the kind of terrain Scorsese covered in both Goodfellas and The Departed. In 1960s and 70s Hawaii, this formidable and charismatic mob boss rises to build the islands’ most powerful criminal empire, waging a brutal war against mainland corporations and rival syndicates while fighting to preserve his ancestral land.

When Pete offers suggestions and ideas, it’s always with good intentions. That doesn’t mean it works out the right way, and we see more of that in Ghosts season 4, episode 13.
The most recent episode saw Jay’s restaurant open. It looked for a minute that it wasn’t going to happen. Flower was so convinced that the cult leader was right about the end of the world that happened to be on the same day as the restaurant opening. Flower thought she was doing good, but she needed to listen to everyone else around her first.
Now it’s time to move over to Pete. He acts in ways that he thinks are good, but they turn out to be a much bigger issue. In this case, it could affect Jay’s restaurant again.

Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther is hard to imagine with a White director at its helm. Apart from the controversies that it would have brought for Marvel Studios, it was only the right thing to do as Ryan Coogler had a personal connection to the subject matter. While Boseman agreed that a White director could’ve done the film, they probably wouldn’t have had the perspective that Coogler, a Black director, had.

Interestingly, even Coogler didn’t believe that he was qualified to do the film just because he was Black. Before filming Black Panther, Coogler visited Africa so that he could more accurately depict Wakanda in the film. Coogler is all set to make his threequel to the film, which would be his second film without Boseman who passed away in 2020.

James Gandolfini’s The Sopranos was an influential television series that marked the beginning of the Second Golden Age of television. After Gandolfini’s Soprano family patriarch, one other character whom fans loved the most was Michael Imperioli’s Christopher Moltisanti. The two actors struck a friendship on the set of the show and the duo’s bond proved a little challenging for the makers of the series.

Imperioli revealed that during the filming of one scene, they were both so out of control that the crew feared for the actors’ safety on the set. Despite their little nuisances, both Gandolfini and Imperioli proved to be exceptional performers and garnered a huge fanbase for their respective roles.

James Gandolfini’s portrayal of Tony Soprano in HBO’s The Sopranos cemented his legacy as one of television’s greatest actors. A slow burn across six seasons, fans got to witness an extraordinary breakdown of character when it came to Tony Soprano, in the end.
The Sopranos cast. (Credit: HBO).
One scene, in particular, completely personified this transformation. However, its sheer brutality meant that HBO executives were initially hesitant, yet show creator David Chase refused to back down.
The scene occurred in season 1, episode 5, College, in which Tony Soprano takes his daughter Meadow (Jamie-Lynn Sigler) to various college open days while tracking a known FBI informant.
David Chase fought for this scene to be included in The Sopranos James Gandolfini in a still from The Sopranos | Credits: HBO
The scene in question was the moment Tony Soprano, a charismatic antihero, transformed from a troubled but relatable family man into a cold-blooded killer.

Martin Scorsese's 1990 crime masterpiece "Goodfellas" is one of the finest gangster movies ever made and has the award shelf to prove it. Still, despite its impressive six Academy Award nominations, the most esteemed awards of the industry largely avoided the mob epic -- except for one particular golden statuette.
Joe Pesci held the fort at the 1991 Academy Awards ceremony with his Best Actor in a Supporting Role Oscar win for his amazing turn as the volatile Tommy DeVito, the wildest card in a movie full of wild cards. He became an Oscar-winning actor with his signature cool intact. However, unlike his character -- who, as his iconic "I'm funny how?" scene shows, is extremely verbose at most times -- the actor chose to keep his speech short and sweet, uttering only five words as he took the stage to receive the golden statuette. "It's my privilege. Thank you," Pesci said before exiting the stage.

They say that luck is where preparation meets opportunity, but sometimes, even the most prepared can find themselves standing at a crossroads, ready to walk away from something that could change their lives forever. Michael Imperioli, the actor who played the unpredictable and ambitious Christopher Moltisanti in The Sopranos, knows this better than anyone.
It’s hard to believe that the show, which is often dubbed the greatest TV series of all time, almost lost one of its key players before it even started. But Imperioli was never one to blindly chase fame; he wanted something more.

What would have happened if he had chosen a different path? If, instead of embracing the role of a hot-headed, aspiring scriptwriter, Imperioli had walked away from the role that defined him? Well, the world of The Sopranos was not about to let him go that easily.

Is there any star working today with a career as varied as Marion Cotillard? Anyone who has moved as effortlessly between Hollywood blockbusters — Inception, Dark Knight, Public Enemies — and indies (The Immigrant and Macbeth), from slapstick action comedy like the Taxi films — the French pre-Fast and the Furious car racing franchise that first made her a star — to auteur dramas like Rust and Bone, Annette, and Two Days, One Night?
“I just read scripts and, no matter the genre, if it’s a comedy or a drama, when I feel I can bring something to the movie, that’s when I choose to be part of it,” Cotillard says, speaking via Zoom from her home in Paris. “I don’t plan anything [but] I feel very lucky that I can go between totally different worlds.”
The world Cotillard enters in The Ice Tower, which has its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival on Feb.

Recasting a character is always a tricky proposition. Sometimes, it's just not working out, and you go in a different direction, but when you're dealing with a franchise character, you risk angering longtime fans who have emotionally invested in a particular actor's performance. That was the case when "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" replaced Aunt Viv, recasting Janet Hubert with Daphne Reid, and people still talk about that situation decades later.
There are also instances when an actor dies while filming something meant to be ongoing. In early 2025, it was reported that, despite fan investment in Chadwick Boseman's performance, Marvel is considering recasting T'Challa ahead of "Black Panther 3." In fact, writer Jeff Sneider reported that the role had already been offered to someone new, but they decided not to take the risk. "They turned it down, not wanting to jeopardize their career momentum by stepping into Boseman's gigantic shoes,...

You ever watch something so weird, so wildly unhinged, that you walk out of the theater grinning like a lunatic, half-convinced you just hallucinated the whole thing? That’s The Monkey—a gloriously deranged fever dream of cruel deaths, deep-seated childhood trauma, and cackling absurdity. Imagine Twin Peaks if it was directed by John Waters, but with a murderous toy monkey at its core. Osgood Perkins has officially lost his mind in the best way possible, delivering the best Stephen King adaptation in decades.

At the outset of 1993, there wasn't a more bankable movie star than Kevin Costner. Dating back to Brian De Palma's "The Untouchables" in 1987, Costner had starred in at least one blockbuster every year. He possessed an earnestness and practical facility that recalled Gary Cooper, but he could place a sexy, ornery spin on the ball if need be (particularly as minor league catcher Crash Davis in Ron Shelton's masterful "Bull Durham"). He was such a winning presence onscreen and as a Hollywood concept in general that his Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences peers enthusiastically declared his "Dances with Wolves" the Best Picture of 1990 over Martin Scorsese's undeniable "Goodfellas." He also snagged the Best Director trophy, which felt like a statement of principle from the Oscars: let's make movies big and sweeping and morally upright again.

Jennifer Esposito’s Fresh Kills does not unfold in the bluster and bravado one might expect from a mafia narrative. Instead, it invites us to peer into the quiet, suffocating corners of a world where family ties, rather than the criminal enterprise itself, become the true source of anguish.
Set against the grim backdrop of Staten Island—a place as decayed and overcast as the lives it holds—the film traces the lives of two sisters, Connie and Rose, caught within the gravitational pull of their father’s shady empire. What seems like a film about mobsters quickly reveals itself to be something far darker: a meditation on the corrosion of the soul when familial loyalty trumps moral reckoning.

Ke Huy Quan’s Oscar win for “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” as many awards narratives do, made for an unparalleled joyous celebration of a talent done dirty by an industry that had been a part of his life for decades. A minor fixture of the 1980s before he’d even hit puberty, the roles became scant into adulthood, sending Quan into a behind-the-scenes role as a stunt choreographer until Daniels picked him out for the role of a lifetime. But we already heard all of this ad nauseam the last time Quan was rightfully in the spotlight; now, just under two years after winning that Oscar, it’s time to see how all that rightful celebration has been channeled towards the exact opportunities that Quan had been unfairly lacking before his return to the frontlines.

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
Horror movies may not often get a whole lot of respect, critically speaking. For whatever reason, they are often treated as a lesser form of entertainment. It's only the rarest of rare genre offerings that can go on to become embraced both critically and commercially, with Jordan Peele's "Get Out" serving as a shining example from relatively recent times. That's an outlier though. One undeniable truth though is that these movies are a reliable backbone for Hollywood studios, delivering consistent profits against relatively low investments. Good movies, bad movies, it often doesn't matter.
Hardcore horror fans will tell you that the number of bad movies far outweighs the good in any given year. It's about searching for that diamond in the rough.

Lorraine Bracco played the role of the defensive but empathetic Dr. Jennifer Melfi in The Sopranos. Tasked with giving therapy to a mafia boss, Dr. Melfi has to maintain her composure and not judge the moral ethics of her client’s line of work while also helping him. Her on-screen co-star James Gandolfini played the boss Tony Soprano.
Bracco’s performance in The Sopranos was highly appreciated at the time. She received Primetime Emmy nominations four times, with thrice for Outstanding Lead Actress. She also received a Golden Globe nomination thrice. However, Bracco mentioned that playing Dr. Melfi was one of the most difficult roles in her career.

Imagine a world where The Sopranos wasn’t the same. Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas almost stole away one of the show’s greatest casting choices after James Gandolfini. Yes, things could’ve gone very differently, and not in a good way.

While Goodfellas is iconic in its own right, the thought of this actor missing from The Sopranos is like pasta without the sauce — unfathomable. Luckily, fate (and some solid decision-making) stepped in to keep this legendary role right where it belonged.

In an ironic twist, Goodfellas star Lorraine Bracco almost missed out on her iconic role in The Sopranos. After playing Karen Hill in Martin Scorsese‘s masterpiece, Bracco thought she was done with mafia wives.
