Premiering in 1998, Masami Tsuda’s Kare Kano (His And Her Circumstances) had all the elements of a successful adaptation. Gainax, fresh off the success of Neon Genesis Evangelion, took charge of the series, with Hideaki Anno directing the early episodes.
The anime captured the charm and emotional depth of Tsuda’s manga, offering a refreshingly honest look at teenage romance.
However, as the series progressed, cracks began to form.
The animation quality noticeably declined, episodes became more inconsistent, and by the final stretch, the show had lost much of its initial polish. Instead of a satisfying conclusion, Kare Kano ended in an unresolved state, frustrating viewers.
The reason? A behind-the-scenes struggle between Gainax and the manga’s creator.
The Rift Between Gainax and Masami Tsuda
One of the biggest issues that plagued Kare Kano’s production was a fundamental disagreement between Gainax and Masami Tsuda over the tone of the adaptation.

Billboard apologizes to Taylor Swift after unintentionally sparking a controversy that has upset her fans.
The music publication and chart company recently dubbed the singer the second-biggest pop star of the 21st century, just beyond Beyonce.
However, a video announcing the news created outrage as it included a clip of Kanye West’s ‘Famous’ music video, and the outlet has now stated being at the receiver’s end.

"Pacific Rim" is one of the best American blockbuster movies of the 2010s ... or one of the best kaiju movies ever ... or even one of the best live-action anime movies not based on a specific anime (but still clearly inspired by "Patlabor" and "Tetsujin-28"). It's also a hugely important movie for filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and an essential part of the Oscar-winner's filmography. After all, "Pacific Rim" was both his first original English-language script and his first original film in seven years -- not to mention the film that marked his transition into a full-time Hollywood director.
Still, as successful as the movie was, and as much as it depended on del Toro's unique visual style and imagination, a sequel (titled "Pacific Rim Uprising") was made without his involvement, meaning his original ideas for "Pacific Rim 2" were all scrapped. And though it seems unlikely that a third "Pacific Rim" will ever get made,...

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom's release date is in September, and there is much speculation as to where it falls on the timeline. Ganon's role as the villain is uncertain, as the trailer shows Link defeating him before vanishing into a rift. Calamity Ganon may be Demise, and Echoes of Wisdom could reveal the true nature of the villain.
Nintendo recently unveiled The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom at their June 2024 Direct, a game that many had no idea was even in the works. With a release date set for September of this year, it's amazing that the historic company was able to keep the game under wraps in an era where leaks are as common as day-one patches. While the presentation did an excellent job of explaining the games backstory and how the titular Princess Zelda will be traversing the lands of Hyrule, there is...

Avatar comics extend the beloved TV series, offering new perspectives and filling in gaps left by the show's conclusion. The Lost Adventures anthology maintains the show's lighthearted vibe while providing deeper insights into familiar characters. Graphic novel trilogies like The Promise and The Search delve into complex storylines post-tv series, enriching the Avatar universe.
For fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender, there is a whole world to explore beyond what happened on screen, in the form of comic book stories that extend the universe of Avatar. Serving largely as a continuation to the television series, as well as offering a number of stories set during the events of the show, Avatar comics have proven the medium to be a perfect fit for the franchise.

"Avatar: The Last Airbender" told a complete and epic story across three seasons and 61 episodes, from 2005 to 2008. Now, it's been confirmed the Netflix-helmed live-action remake of "Avatar" will get to carry this story to the finish line once more.
The 2012-2014 sequel series "The Legend of Korra" showed what happened decades later, but there are other stories following the original Team Avatar after the series' wrap-up. And no, I don't mean the upcoming animated "Avatar" movie, releasing in 2025, that will follow these heroic kids as adults.
Since 2012, Dark Horse Comics has been publishing licensed "The Last Airbender" graphic novels, varying in length from trilogies to 80-page one-shots. The comics were first written by cartoonist Gene Luen Yang and drawn in the style of the animated series by artist duo Gurihiru (the same comic-creating team that went on to make "Superman Smashes The Klan"). Netflix's live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender can use the lore and backstories established in the Atla comics to build a clearer and more nuanced world. The graphic novels fill in gaps and deepen the franchise, allowing the live-action series to incorporate elements from Legend of Korra and the comics from the start. By borrowing from the comics and supplemental material, Netflix's adaptation can answer crucial questions and flesh out characters and plots that viewers didn't see in the original series.
Netflix's live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender has one huge advantage over Nickelodeon's original Atla animated series — and it needs to use that upper hand wisely. Created by Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko, the three-season Avatar: The Last Airbender began airing in 2005. The fantasy-action show's epic story came to a conclusion in 2008. By 2012, it spawned a sequel, The Legend of Korra — though that isn't the only world-expanding narrative to follow Atla.

Ridley Scott's Alien has had a major influence on the sci-fi and space horror genres, spawning numerous rip-offs with similar premises and visuals. While some movies have been able to pay tribute to Alien in a respectable manner, many American rip-offs have fallen into the B-movie category with derivative characters and campy visuals. Some notable Alien rip-offs include Inseminoid, Alien from the Deep, Dead Space, Pandorum, Critters 4, Leviathan, Apollo 18, Star Crystal, The Rift, and Forbidden World. These movies varied in quality, with some delivering intriguing experiences while others fell flat.
Ridley Scott’s Alien has been so influential in the sci-fi genre — and the space horror genre in particular — that it has naturally spawned numerous rip-offs. From the general premise of astronauts being hunted down by parasitic alien lifeforms aboard a spacecraft to specific visual nods like the chest-busting Xenomorph, Alien has provided numerous tropes for subsequent sci-fi movies to draw upon.

Amazing Stories "The Rift" is a time-traveling adventure story with a classic Steven Spielberg feel and the series finale for season 1. Similar to episode 3, "Dynoman and the Volt", "The Rift" features a young boy as the protagonist. It opens with Elijah Whitaker (Duncan Joiner) riding in the car with his stepmom, passing through Dayton, Ohio on the way to San Diego, California when a sudden storm fills the sky and a fighter plane from World War II crashes in a nearby creek. They jump out of the car and Mary rushes down the slope to free a soldier from the plane, a young man by the name of Lieutenant Theodore Cole.
Confused, Mary Ann and Elijah agree to help Lieutenant Cole, giving him a ride into town. In a classic Spielberg sci-fi kind of way, Elijah is young enough to still believe in fantastic things and immediately knows Cole's story...

While each season of True Detective focuses on the two main investigators, there are several other unforgettable characters, and the season 3 death of Amelia Reardon (Carmen Ejogo) is one of the most mysterious parts of the series. Season 3 of the HBO drama shares the riveting story of the disappearance of young Julie and Will Purcell (Lena McCarthy and Phoenix Elkin) from the Ozarks. Amelia is a writer and teacher who falls in love with Detective Wayne Hays (Mahershala Ali), who has been assigned to the case with Roland West (Stephen Dorff). Amelia and Wayne's love story is a bright spot in a tragic and heavy season.
Season 3 of True Detective has three timelines, and in episode 1, "The Great War and Modern Memory," it's revealed that, in 2015, Wayne is talking to Elisa Montgomery (Sarah Gadon) for True Criminal and Amelia has died. The reason for her death isn't shared in these eight episodes,...

A trend for horror anthologies is emerging from the competing titles in this year’s Sitges Pitchbox event, as organizers Filmmarket Hub and the Sitges Film Festival announce this year’s line up.
And, as the movie project showcase opens up its doors to series for the first time, it’s buzzy titles such as “R.I.P “ and “Mr Ray” which appear to be embracing the anthology format.

The following contains spoilers for Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend Of Korra.
Lightning bending is one of the strongest abilities in Avatar: The Last Airbender, with Azula’s lightning attack nearly killing Aang for good. It’s also one of the rarest techniques, with only Ozai, Iroh, and Azula able to generate lightning on their own. Even Aang, the avatar, and Zuko could only redirect lightning. It was incredibly powerful and only used for huge moments in the story.
This is why when The Legend of Korra first debuted (and as new fans have rediscovered it on Netflix) many fans were confused why lightning bending seemed so commonplace. In Atla only a select few knew the technique, now new lead character Mako was working in a factory with many other lightning benders generating much of the power for the city.
So what happened in the span of time...

Mark Mylod has been one of premium cable’s go-to directors for quite some time, having helmed episodes of Showtime’s “Shameless” and “The Affair,” as well as “Entourage” and “Game of Thrones” at HBO. The characters on “Succession” are pretty appalling. Why do you think viewers can’t help but be drawn to a Cousin Greg or a Tom?
The human struggle is for survival and just to make your way in the world, no matter the extraordinary kind of gilded cage they’re all in and this extraordinary privilege of wealth that they’re trapped by.

Amazon Prime Video’s Tales from the Loop is a sci-fi series set in an idyllic alternate history rife with robots and wonderment.
Tales from the Loop, an Amazon Prime Video sci-fi series, brandishes a motif centered on curiosity and awe against a pastoral backdrop that – complemented by its focus on kid protagonists – seems intent on tapping into the retro-1980s genre vein that has fueled Netflix’s Stranger Things to phenomenal success.
The series, headlined by Rebecca Hall, comes from rather original source material in the fantastical paintings of Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag. Nathaniel Halpern is the credited creator of Tales from the Loop, on which he also serves as writer. The director’s chair is occupied by Mark Romanek, who helmed an array of iconic music videos from the 1990s, as well as Robin Williams’s creepy turn in 2002 film One Hour Photo and the ultimately-unfruitful 2011 Locke & Key TV pilot.

The political thriller has enjoyed the best opening weekend for a local film in national cinemas in the last 20 years. 2019 was a great year for Slovakian films on domestic turf, as the one-million-viewer threshold was exceeded for national productions (see the news). The most-visited Slovakian movie of 2019 ended up being The Rift (see the news), an adaptation of Jozef Karika’s book of the same name, directed by Peter Bebjak. National distributor Continental Film has honed the art of marketing Bebjak’s films, resulting in a strong opening weekend at the box office. In August 2017, The Line drew 69,242 paying theatre-goers, while 83,266 viewers came to see The Rift during its first week on release. Incidentally, 2017 was also a record-breaking year for openings of domestic films (see the news). The romantic comedy All or Nothing was the first to break the opening record, followed by...
The upcoming supernatural crime series will mix the “war on evil” with domestic lore. Domestic folklore and mythology have been rich sources of inspiration for new Slovakian projects of late. In addition to feature projects in development such as Mother of the Night (read the news) and Leshy (read the news), such ancient tales — in particular the legends and lore pertaining to the cultural and historical heritage of Slovakia and the Czech Republic — will also be woven into the narrative of upcoming series The Exorcist. The first episode will tackle the same mystery that was the subject of Peter Bebjak’s The Rift, a small and big screen adaptation of the book of the same name, whose theatrical version set a new record in domestic box-office for an opening-weekend in 2018 (read the news). After The Slavs, an ambitious project combining history and mythology (read the news) and the...

Apple TV+ is bringing a rebooted version of anthology series Amazing Stories to its stream with Steven Spielberg returning as producer.
Apple TV+ heard you were in the market for some amazing stories and as fate would have it, so are they.
Apple's new streaming service has ordered anthology series Amazing Stories, a revival of the 1985 NBC series of the same name. Steven Spielberg will return to executive produce the series through Amblin Entertainment just like he did with the original version.
The original Amazing Stories was little-watched but greatly admired. It ran on NBC from 1985 through 1987, wracking up 12 Emmy nominations and a few wins in the process. The series told...well, amazing stories, mostly in the sci-fi genre. It featured plenty of talent onscreen and even more in the directors' chair with Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Irvin Kershner, and more all helming episodes.

The upcoming epic TV series mixes 7th-century historical content with fantasy and supernatural elements. Prolific Slovakian filmmaker Peter Bebjak has been equally busy working on projects for the small screen. He is currently directing several episodes of the ambitious television series The Slavs, the most expensive Slovakian TV series to the date. It is described as a “fictional reconstruction of a historical period with fantasy and supernatural elements”, inspired by Slovakian and Ukrainian myths and fairy tales. The Slavs marks the first foray into quality TV production within the field of Slovakian audiovisual production. Set in the 7th century in the Carpathian Basin, this sword-and-sorcery story takes place between two hill forts and centres on their business and power interests as well as the pressure exerted on them...
A promising year is shaping up in local box-office for domestic productions. The recent spike in admissions to domestic films (read the news) foreshadowed the fact that Slovakian films are picking up steam after the record-breaking year of 2017 (read the news) and a second successful run in 2018 (read the news). According to the Slovak Union of Film Distributors, domestic productions managed to attract 392,098 theatregoers in the first half of 2019. That is 141,000 more admissions sold to Slovakian films than the attendance of domestic productions for the entire 2018. The top spot has been taken by mysterious thriller The Rift directed by Peter Bebjak, an adaptation of a novel by local author Jozef Karika that was turned into a miniseries then re-cut for theatrical release. Hollywood studios occasionally have an uncanny knack of announcing almost identical film projects at the same time. In the 1980s, we had rival police dog movies K-9 and Turner And Hooch. Few people would even know of Pod People, Aka Extraterrestrial Visitors, Aka Los Nuevos Extraterrestres had it not been famously featured on “Mystery Science Theater 3000". Juan Piquer Simon could be considered Uwe Boll before there was an Uwe Boll. The drive-in movie-going experience is something I recall as a true labor of cinema love for me. Before there was the option to trek to your local Ma and Pa video store to catch a flick, you had no choice but to beg your parents to get in the car to see the latest horror film. And that, my friends, is what is missing from fandom today – that spontaneity to throw caution to the wind to take a chance on what might or might not be a terrible movie. That’s what made it so much fun! The days of battling the crackling speaker in the car window and the giant murky screen where you couldn’t quite see what was happening may seem long gone, but if you search Google maps you’d be surprised to find out there are a few left. But people would rather Netflix, Redbox...

A small town is plagued by a series of grisly deaths. The local health inspector investigates and discovers that the “killers” are actually a mutant variety of meat-eating garden slugs. It seems that the town had been built on top of a toxic waste dump, which turned the normally harmless slugs into ravenous carnivores.

During the 70's, 80's, and 90's, independent Spanish exploitation filmmaker Juan Piquer Simon quietly and lovingly cooked up an ambitious and outrageous collection of goofy and gonzo genre cinema curiosities, full of cracked charm and fantastical old-school practical effects (rubber-suit monsters, matte paintings, opticals, etc.). Ever since I converged on Simon's wild filmography for the first time, by unintentionally discovering separate films independently of each other and then tying them all back to the same man, I have always been impressed and intrigued by his eclectic string of independently made oddball fantasy cinema delights, like; Where Time Began (aka Fabulous Journey To The Center Of The Earth) (1976), the MST3K made-famous The Pod People (1983), Supersonic Man (1979), Slugs: The Movie (1988) (served up on Jfd Ep#8), Mystery On Monster Island (1981), The Rift (aka Endless Descent) (1990), Sea Devils (1982), Pieces (1982), Cthulhu Mansion (1990) and Manoa, the City of Gold (1999), among others.
