Cuban Cartoons in Italy
Italy's 13th Cartoons on the Bay TV Animation Film Festival, April 2-5, is held just after MIP, and is a 3-hour drive to Rapallo, Santa Margherita and Portofino in Italy. This edition will spotlight Cuban cartoons. Educational Cuban cartoons designed to dissuade girls from prostitution will receive a Pulcinella award. The Havana delegation will include Cuba's leading animator Juan Padron (Vampires in Havana) and Cuban Film Institute (ICAIC) VP Luis Alberto Gonzales Nieto. Tribute will also be made to Japanese anime auteur Yoshiyuki Tomino whose groundbreaking Mobile Suit Gundam robot series airs on the Sci Fi channel. The festival is sponsored and run by RAI and has a new director, Roberto Genovesi, a video game maker and writer who is expanding the festival to include comics, video games and other multimedia content. In competition for the Pulcinella awards in nine categories will be 44 animated shows from 16 countries, including 8 from the U.S.
