FAQ

Edge of Darkness

FAQ

The idea that the planet Earth is a self regulating biosphere which will ultimately counter any attempts by humanity to alter it. The term was coined by scientist James Lovelock naming it after an ancient Greek Earth goddess (something he ultimately regretted as environmentalists came to see it as having a mystical element rather than a logical hypothesis).

Very accurate in terms of the science, the expansion of the civil nuclear industry during the 1980s and the attempts of the anti-nuclear movement to thwart it. Ironically however with the end of the Cold War and the threat of global warming/energy crisis due to foreign supply the nuclear industry has experienced a renaissance as it is actually more environmentally friendly than the alternatives. Plutonium in particular has become incredibly vital to the space programme as it is used in atomic batteries, just as Grogan predicted.
