Joe Flaherty, founding member of “Sctv” and ubiquitous comic actor for decades including a stint as the Dad on “Freaks and Geeks,” has died at the age of 82, according to multiple reports.
The Pittsburgh-born performer (a rare American in the Canadian comedy sphere) got his start with the Chicago-based Second City Theater, first appearing on the “National Lampoon Radio Hour” before resettling in Toronto to become part of Second City’s core in the Great White North. He was one of the initial writer/performers on “Sctv,” a vanguard sketch comedy series co-starring John Candy, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Rick Moranis, Catherine O’Hara, Harold Ramis (for a little while), Dave Thomas, and, later, Martin Short, that mixed parody programming with behind-the-scenes shenanigans at a low rent television station in “Mellonville.” Indeed, if “Sctv” could be said to have a main character, it would be Flaherty’s Guy Caballero, the corrupt,...

If Drake and Kendrick finally have a rap battle for the ages, it won’t be solely because of Kendrick’s recent verse on Future and Metro Boomin’s “Like That.” It (probably) won’t be over industry politics that we’re not privy to, pillow talking, or whatever other trivial issues have caused prior rap feuds. I’m not the biggest fan of rap beef because, as Snoop Dogg told Latto, it’s often a product of ego intensified by corporate forces looking to maintain division. But Drake and...

When director Harold Ramis and producing partner Trevor Albert stumbled upon the screenplay for Groundhog Day, no one knew it would become a film that viewers would (voluntarily) watch over and over.
Having followed National Lampoon’s Vacation with 1986’s underperforming Club Paradise, Ramis wanted his next project to aim outside the box. CAA’s Richard Lovett tipped him off to Danny Rubin’s spec script for a philosophical comedy about jaded TV weatherman Phil Connors, who gets snowbound covering the Groundhog Day festival in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania; he soon finds himself unable to stop reliving the titular holiday.
“I don’t remember much about what I was doing 30 years ago — or three years ago — but I remember sitting down and reading that script, and by the time I got to page 20, yelling to Harold, ‘I think I have a script you’re gonna want to read,'” Albert tells The Hollywood Reporter.

There was every reason to expect "Club Paradise" would be the comedy smash of Summer 1986. Harold Ramis was two-for-two as a director thanks to "Caddyshack" and "National Lampon's Vacation," and scorching hot off the blockbuster success of "Ghostbusters." Ramis had reunited with his "National Lampoon's Animal House" collaborator Chris Miller to hammer out the story, and hooked up once again with his "Caddyshack" co-writer Brian Doyle-Murray for the screenplay. And then there was the cast: Robin Williams, Peter O'Toole, Rick Moranis, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Joe Flaherty, Robin Duke, and Mary Gross. How could a film stuffed with this much comedic talent possibly miss?
Aside from Ramis and Levy playing a couple of hapless, horn-dog tourists who inadvertently score a trash bag full of marijuana, just about nothing works in "Club Paradise." The notion of a retired Chicago firefighter (Williams) starting up a ramshackle Caribbean resort with his disability money sounds promising,...

For those who were not cognizant throughout the 1980s, it's probably difficult to believe there was a time when Robin Williams was considered a risky box office bet. Though his first time out as a leading man, in Robert Altman's "Popeye," was a hit, that film's success was largely ascribed to the popularity of the cartoon character. He enjoyed two moderate successes after the cancellation of "Mork & Mindy" ("The World According to Garp" and "Moscow on the Hudson"), but neither film fully showcased his head-spinning comedic stream-of-consciousness. In 1986, he was strangely miscast in the Ron Shelton-scripted underdog yarn "The Best of Times," and undermined by a relentlessly unfunny screenplay in Harold Ramis' "Club Paradise."
The back-to-back failure of those two films left studios weary of Williams' big-screen appeal. The industry's conventional wisdom held that his genius was limited to the stand-up stage and guest appearances on late-night talk shows.

It is, finally, just about time to return to Chicago’s South Side, and a trailer for the long-missing Comedy Central-turned-hbo Max series promises a bit of singing, some foot modeling and… a phony thermostat?
Returning with Season 2 on Thursday, Nov. 11 — more than two years after its freshman run ended — South Side follows two friends, Simon and Kareme (played by Kareme Young and Sultan Salahuddin), who just graduated from community college and are ready to take over the world. Ben Sharrock's Limbo is exclusively showing on Mubi in the United Kingdom and Ireland starting September 23, 2021 in the series The New Auteurs. An urgent yet deliberately quirky film, Ben Sharrock’s brilliant Limbo is superficially another fish out of water story. Set in a remote part of Scotland, it resembles the old Ealing Comedies, like Whisky Galore!, but with incredibly dark social realism running through it. The fish is Syrian asylum-seeker Omar who, along with fellow refugees from different countries, has been sent to a place so unwelcoming and bleak—a local place for local people—that desperation quickly sets in. Omar has his trusty instrument, his grandfather’s oud, for company and a determination and outlook that sustains him, but it’s definitely not a rose-tinted story. The cherry on the top of this drama is casting Sidse Babett Knudsen (Borgen) as the woman helping them learn customs and language.

Beloved YouTube ghost-hunting duo Sam Goldbach (above, right) and Colby Brock (left) are branching out into yet another content medium.
Their debut novel, Paradise Island: A Sam And Colby Story, hits shelves and ecommerce today. The work of fiction -- inspired by an actual vacation that the duo took to Kauai, is being published by indie outfit Permuted Press. In the book, the guys take a detour to the Na Pali Coast and find themselves stuck overnight at the Belle Estate, which is owned by an eccentric and wealthy widow that locals suspect might be a witch.
And fans are already apparently clamoring for copies, with Paradise Island sitting at No. 1 on Amazon’s 'Teen & Young Adult Ghost Stories' charts, and at No. 21 on Amazon’s overall 'Teen & Young Adult' chart. While it’s not exclusively defined by it, Paradise Killer’s pastel world derived from Miami and Tokyo, painfully retro presentation, and smooth jazz soundtrack tick enough of the boxes of the all-important aesthetic to be conclusively considered a vaporwave game. It’s probably the most noteworthy title to carry that designation, so adherents to the inexplicable artistic movement practically owe it to themselves to play it. For everyone else, here’s an open-world cosmic horror detective game that looks, sounds, and feels very strange for basically no reason – take it or leave it.
The story takes place on Paradise Island, a pocket dimension devised by the psychically-empowered Syndicate as a base of operations for restoring the cabal of variously unavailable alien gods they worship. The leaders of the Syndicate have all been mysteriously killed, so the formerly-exiled detective Lady Love Dies (who the game helpfully informs us was born...

Showrun by Lucía Puenzo and produced by Fremantle and Fabula, “Señorita México” (“Miss Mexico”) has added two writers, María Renée Prudencio and Tatiana Merenuk, as it advances towards production, which is scheduled for the first half of 2021.
The new series will be produced for Starzplay and Pantaya in Latin America and Spain, in a deal brokered by Fremantle’s international distribution arm, Fremantle and Fabula confirmed Tuesday, as they also unveiled more details of one of Latin America’s banner productions for 2021, which will be the first at Fabula’s new Mexican production beach-head.
Star of Fernando Eimbke’s “Club Sandwich,” actress-writer Mexico-based Prudencio scooped a Mexican Academy Ariel for co-adapting ensemble comedy “Last Call,” which also won its female cast a collective prize at the Guadalajara Festival. Her second major movie screenplay, for Natalia Beristain’s “The Eternal Feminine,” exhibited a distinctive female sensibility in its portrait of Mexican writer Rosario Castellanos.

In 1974, I was 16 and curious to see ABC try once again with super-heroes. One fine Tuesday night, I sat at and watched Wonder Woman, horrified at the liberties taken in the backdoor pilot. Cathy Lee Crosby didn’t have the looks or the costume and the most interesting thing about this was Ricardo Montalban as the heavy.
The network somehow still saw the potential in the character and commissioned a more faithful pilot, this time with a comics-accurate costume and perfect casting in Lynda Carter. In the hands of former Batman scribe Stanley Ralph Ross, the show felt right. ABC agreed and a series of Wonder Woman shows were filmed, set in World War II.
This was the beginning of the jiggle era of television, as prime time was filled with busty, often braless actors and they pandered to the women’s movement with female-led shows that didn’t fulfill their promise.

Though it’s yet to launch in the UK and other parts of Europe, Disney+ has already proven itself to be a major player in North America – thanks in large part to its suite of digital content, which ranges from Marvel Studios to Star Wars and everything in between.
And much like its online peers, Disney+ is still to roll out a fresh wave of content for April 2020, beginning with Doctor Dolittle on April 1st – not to be confused with the recent remake starring McU mainstay Robert Downey Jr.
What’s more, April marks Earth Month, so you can expect plenty of eco-friendly documentaries to air via National Geographic. Indeed, it’s fair to say that the Disney+ lineup has fast become one of the most diverse on the market. From new episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars to age-old classics like Doctor Dolittle, there’s really something for everyone.

'Professor Marston and the Wonder Women' Director on the Superhero's Kinky Origin Story (Exclusive)
If you saw Wonder Woman this summer -- and the record-setting $800 million worldwide box office indicates a lot of people saw Wonder Woman this summer -- then you know the story of how Diana, Princess of Themyscira, became the superhero Wonder Woman, protector of mankind. How Wonder Woman ended up on the pages of comic books in the first place is a story unto itself however, told in Professor Marston and the Wonder Women: In 1941, Dr. William Moulton Marston (played by Luke Evans), his wife, Elizabeth (Rebecca Hall), and their lover, Olive Byrne (Bella Heathcote), created the character to save the world...through psychology. Director Angela Robinson (D.E.B.S.) could never have predicted, though, that her Wonder Woman indie would arrive in theaters mere months after one of the biggest movies of the year.
"I'm getting a lot of credit for having the foresight to know that in the summer of 2017, the 75-years-in-the-making, long-gestating Wonder Woman movie would...

Throughout his film career, John Carpenter was always ahead of the curve; whether finalizing the blueprint for the modern slasher or offering an ever prescient political take on alien invasions, Carpenter always seemed to be ahead of what the next big thing would be, often to decreased box office receipts. So it came as a surprise to many (myself included) that he started up Body Bags (1993), a would-be anthology series ala Tales from the Crypt for Showtime. The bigger surprise though is that it didn’t fly, because this one off is terrific entertainment.
Originally televised on Showtime on August 8th, Body Bags was met with critical approval and fans of the genre enjoyed it. However, the brass had already decided that this would be a one and done, hence the truncated anthology film format for the three segments already filmed. What a shame, because while Carpenter in front of...

Justice League stars Ben Affleck (Batman), Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Ezra Miller (The Flash) and Ray Fisher (Cyborg) were all on hand in Hall H, while Henry Cavill (Superman) was not in attendance.
Affleck introduced the Justice League trailer that opens with Wonder Woman taking down armed robbers and then heading off the her day job, restoring art. Note: This article reveals some plot details from the movie Wonder Woman.
Adapting an iconic superhero for the big screen usually means adapting at least one of their iconic love interests as well. Steve Trevor may not be a household name like Lois Lane or Mary Jane Watson, but like those characters, he’s been a staple of Wonder Woman’s story from her very first appearance in All-Star Comics #8. Steve’s plane crash landing on Paradise Island is a key part of Wonder Woman’s origin story, in much the same way Jor-El sending Kal off in a space bassinet is a key part of Superman’s. So it only makes sense that Steve would have a major role to play in the first-ever big screen take on Wonder Woman, where he’s winningly brought to life by Chris Pine. Well, everybody else here is talking about Wonder Woman, so I guess it’s my turn. Caution: there may be S-p-o-i-l-e-r-s ahead! (Especially my sixth bullet, below.)
It’s been said before, and I’ll say it again. Gal Gadot is to Ww as Christopher Reeve was to Superman. Her portrayal of the Amazon leaves an indelible print upon the character; it’s as if Zeus did indeed exhale, not upon a figure of clay, but upon a two-dimensional comic book form drawn of pen and ink, allowing her to step off the flat page and into the three-dimensional world, granting her life and all the depth and breadth of humanity. Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor is not some ineffectual weenie who somehow got through basic training, nor is he some steroid-enhanced muscle-bound moose. Nor is he the male version of a 1950s Lois Lane, mooning after love. Nor is...

“Beautiful as Aphrodite, wise as Athena, stronger than Hercules and swifter than Mercury!”
By Joe Elliott
Wonder Woman is one of the true wonders of comic book fandom. She first made her appearance during the Second World War and more than 75 years later she’s still going strong. Throughout the decades she has been transformed numerous times, yet through it all she has for the most part maintained her basic form and personality, one driven by a thirst for justice and in defense of the defenseless. Born of Amazonian royalty, she is Princess Diana of Themyscira, a sub-continent located somewhere in the blue mists of time, also known as Paradise Island. Her mother, Queen Hippolyta, is the ruler of this all-female happy domain, a position that Diana herself will presumably fill one day. That is, until a man shows up. Steve Trevor, a U.S. Army pilot, literally drops out of the sky,...

Amy Schumer’s mother-daughter movie Snatched has opened to largely negative reviews – and it’s not the first time a comedian has failed to add humor to a cinematic venture
For stand-up comics, there were always two paths to stardom: become a talk-show host or a create a hit sitcom. If “movie star” is conveniently absent from that equation, it’s because the list of brilliant comics whose genius did not translate to the silver screen is long and filled with some of our greatest talents. Even those who do find success in film – like the late Robin Williams, who won an Oscar and gave a handful of indelible performances – had more than a few false starts early in his career (The Survivors, The Best of Times, Club Paradise).

Some actors manage to catch lightning in a bottle twice. It’s impressive enough to find your niche in Hollywood’s A-list even once. Occasionally, an actor will reinvent him/herself and begin a new phase of their careers that will be even more successful than it was before. Here are nine actors who had a cinematic rebirth.
Liam Neeson- Neeson has had a long career, and the early part of it was in dramatic roles. An intense dramatic actor, he apeared in films like The Dead Pool, Dark Man, Schindler’s List, Rob Roy and Les Miserables. His career rebirth came after playing Qui-Gon Jinn in Star Wars-Episode one: The Phantom Menace. After that, he got more offers for actions parts and recreated himself as an action hero in films like Gangs of NY, Batman Begins, Taken, Clash of the Titans, the A-Team, Unknown, the Grey, Taken 2,...

Don't put those final roses down just yet, Bachelor in Paradise fans. While it's been a rough month with the news that Amanda Stanton and Josh Murray split as well as Lace Morris and Grant Kemp calling off their engagement, there are some duos still making it work in the public eye. Over the past several days, many stars from Bachelor in Paradise have been enjoying a cast reunion at the Atlantis Hotel on Paradise Island. And in between resting and relaxing, cast members Carly Waddell and Evan Bass are proving their love is very much alive and well. After getting engaged this past summer on the ABC reality show, this duo is the last couple from their season to remain together. But from the looks of...

Just the other day I covered some comments from Gal Gadot, who said that the Wonder Woman she plays in the Dceu stands for "Love, Justice, and Compassion" and that her solo film will reflect that. Today, there are more comments in that vein, and they come from DC Co-President Diane Nelson.
While discussing what she thinks of Gadot, Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins, and what excites her about the vision for this film.
"It’s a testament to Zack Snyder’s casting ability. I think Gal was someone who embodied the role so beautifully, and we saw lots of evidence on how audiences responded when she came onscreen for the first time…she and Ben Affleck really stood out as two amazing parts of [Batman v Superman], and the real life Gal has many of the traits that Wonder Woman does. She is athletic and strong, and she has a great deal of integrity.

Having adorned comic book tiles since the early 40s, Princess Diana of Themyscira is a character that needs no introduction – Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman is, however.
Sworn in to be DC and Warner Bros.’ warrior princess more than a year ago, it’s fair to say that the former Fast and Furious stalwart has really taken to the part, displaying the necessary mix of elegance, wisdom, grace and empathy – along with love and compassion – that Diana Prince is celebrated for. That’ll all be put to the test when Patty Jenkins’ standalone movie checks into theaters in June of next year. Adding to that pressure is the fact that the DC Extended Universe, following the release of Batman V Superman and Suicide Squad, hasn’t enjoyed the level of success Warner was hoping for.

According to reports, principal photography has started on the "Wonder Woman" 'biopic', "Professor Marston and The Wonder Women," focusing on 1940's Harvard psychologist 'Dr. William Moulton Marston', creator of DC Comics' 'Wonder Woman', and the 3-way relationship with his wife 'Elizabeth Marston' and their lover 'Olive Byrne':
Cast includes Luke Evans, Bella Heathcote and Rebecca Hall, with Angela Robinson ("True Blood") directing from her own screenplay. It is not known whether Marston's surviving heirs, including grand-daughter Christie Marston who currently works with her father, in the establishment of a "Wonder Woman" museum, have been included in the deal.
The original 'Wonder Woman' was created by Marston, (aka 'Charles Moulton') who saw the educational potential of comic books and in 1941 was hired as a consultant for "National Periodicals/All-Winner Comics" (DC Comics).

We’re still almost a year away from Wonder Woman’s solo film, but her presence is everywhere at San Diego Comic-Con this year. 2016 is the 75th anniversary of Wonder Woman, and DC Comics has pulled out all the stops. Costumes from the set of Wonder Woman in all their detailed glory. Four of the main characters are represented. But why take photos when you can take glorified Gifs? Below, check out what the women of Themyscira (and Steve Trevor) wear when going into battle (or maybe their fashion is just super militia-inspired?).
