It was the “Footloose” of times, it was the “Ninja Rap” of times. We’re talking, of course, about the golden age of movie tie-in promotional singles of the ‘80s and ‘90s, a time when a well-placed theme could create the song and the movie of the summer, while a misused one probably involved Mc Hammer. In between were a lot of attempts that nobody remembers, because what was the point of making a movie if you couldn’t coerce a pop star to sell their soul for a lot of money?
5 Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
You’re gonna wanna sit down for this: Tone Loc was in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. Right? Who could possibly remember both of those things enough to remember that they were related? And it’s not like you put Tone Loc in your movie if you don’t need one of his songs, so...

“Heart Eyes,” in theaters this weekend, is a one-of-a-kind accomplishment.
It’s a slasher movie that is just as much a romantic comedy and vice versa. It’s not trying to be either of these things, it just is. Stars Mason Gooding and Olivia Holt have genuine chemistry, so when their meet-cute is interrupted by the Heart Eyes Killer, a serial murderer who has been stalking couples for years, you’re rooting for their continued survival, not the least of which because you want to see their relationship blossom. It’s odd to call a movie with this much arterial spray cute, but it really is cute.
And the movie feels like even more of an accomplishment because it maintains the quirks and charms of its director Josh Ruben, who is making his studio movie debut. Ruben is a veteran of CollegeHumor, the online comedy site, and his two features,...

The Valentine’s Day-set horror romantic comedy Heart Eyes, the latest film from Werewolves Within and Scare Me director Josh Ruben is now in theatres (you can read our 7/10 review Here and watch our interviews with cast members at This Link), and during an interview with our friends at Bloody Disgusting, Ruben revealed that he used writer/director Tom McLoughlin’s 1986 classic Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI as his guide when figuring out how to balance horror and comedy in his own slasher movie.
Heart Eyes has the following synopsis: When the Heart Eyes Killer strikes Seattle, a pair of co-workers pulling overtime on Valentine’s Day are mistaken for a couple by the elusive couple-hunting killer. Now they must spend the most romantic night of the year running for their lives. Ruben previously provided the following statement: “My love of horror is rivaled only by my love of romantic comedies.

What do you get when you mix Nora Ephron with Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, and Michael Myers? The combination might seem antithetical, but it works scarily well in director Josh Ruben‘s sweet, funny, terrifying rom-com/slasher movie mash-up, “Heart Eyes.”
Working from an inventive script by Phillip Murphy, Christopher Landon, and Michael Kennedy, Ruben somehow deftly satisfies fans of both “Sleepless in Seattle” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” An iconic new horror villain is born in the form of the movie’s Heart Eyes Killer, a slasher who stalks young lovers each Valentine’s Day.
Ruben, as he explained to IndieWire, wanted the movie’s two sides to be equally strong so that the horror would deepen the romance made all the more terrifying because of our investment in the two young lovers (Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding) fleeing from the Heart Eyes Killer. In studying films of both genres,...

Scare Me and Werewolves Within director Josh Ruben is carving up his place in the slasher pantheon with Heart Eyes, a charming rom-com with a gnarly body count.
Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding star as co-workers mistaken for a couple, putting them directly in the crosshairs of a vicious killer on Valentine’s Day. The slasher, out in theaters this Friday, wears its romantic comedy influences on its sleeves, but one key slasher guided Ruben on his first slasher film.
“My gold standard, my north star, was Tommy McLoughlin’s Jason Lives,” Ruben tells Bloody Disgusting of the film’s influences. “That film is as brutal as it is silly as it is fun, and that was the white whale. Then everything after that was searching within myself, the kid that loved rom-coms, like Sleepless in Seattle, which is as funny and sweet as it is heartbreaking, super well acted but also silly,...

August of 1985 saw the release of one of the great zombie movies of all time. And we’re not talking about George Romero’s Day of the Dead, though some will argue that particular sequel deserves to be in the conversation. We’re talking about Dan O’Bannon’s punk-rock horror-comedy The Return of the Living Dead, which introduced the world to speedy, brain-craving zombies – who also have a thing or two to say when they’re feeling chatty. The movie was by no means a blockbuster, but it did very respectable business, making around $30 million worldwide off of a budget in the low single digits. Naturally, a follow-up would be necessary in the eyes of that film’s producer Tom Fox, who assumed the Living Dead title was due for the franchise treatment in the vein of Friday the 13th. It would take three years, but we did eventually get...

One era of the Friday the 13th franchise officially came to an end on January 1st, when the servers for Friday the 13th: The Game – an awesome game that was hindered by the legal issues the franchise went through in recent years – were shut down at the request of the rights holders. Fans will no longer have the chance to play online multiplayer matches of that game with each other… but while the game now rests in peace, we still have the movies to watch over and over again. So let’s take a look at this Friday the 13th Movies Ranked list!
While this list is all in good fun, I have to admit that I found it to be surprisingly difficult to put together. That’s because the Friday the 13th franchise is my favorite of all franchises and I love every one of these films. Ranking them...

How Is It The End Of The Year Already? Time, y’all. Life’s proverbial hourglass turns over again, and with it comes another fresh batch of horror titles ready to rock our worlds. But! Before we start digging into 2025’s crop, Daily Dead has once again generously given me a space to highlight my favorite horror “things” of the year.
I’m going to stick with movies because while every year is a good year for horror movies (which I had to remind doubters yet again), 2024 was a Really good year for horror movies. In trying to whittle down a Top 10, I stared at double the amount of titles I thought deserved recognition. Therefore, I’m sticking to the screen — I need every single slot.
10. A Quiet Place Day One
In a year of surprising prequels, A Quiet Place: Day One is my favorite.

The ‘Friday the 13th’ franchise is a popular series of horror films that started in 1980. It focuses on the character Jason Voorhees, a killer who wears a hockey mask and terrorizes anyone who comes to his camp, Crystal Lake.
The series has spawned multiple movies, TV shows, and even video games, becoming a major part of horror culture. This is why it also spawned a lot of merchandise, and a new batch dropped recently, just in time for Friday the 13th.
Ten companies and artists have released new Friday the 13th-themed clothing, prints, and collectibles to celebrate Jason’s special day. So let’s check them out.

Few franchises own a day of the year, but even fewer own an inconsistent date. That inconsistency helps make every Friday the 13th feel like a surprise in its own right, which makes any time to celebrate Jason Voorhees a worthwhile occasion. With that in mind, one of the cooler aspects of the franchise has been a rotating group of actors, each with their own spin on Jason Voorhees. Don’t get us wrong, a lot of this comes down to the directors and quality of the movies, but each brings something unique to the role.
Ranking the Jason Voorhees Actors 13. Dick Wieand (Friday the 13th: A New Beginning)
Well, sorry if you didn’t know that Dick Wieand plays Roy, who becomes Jason. However, A New Beginning a shockingly bad entry as a whole. His ninety-ish seconds are indicative of the poor quality of the movie overall. Nothing against Wieand,...

In the realm of legendary slasher franchises, there are few that can challenge "Friday the 13th" for the crown. Not only did Paramount Pictures make these murder-fests an annual tradition for most of the '80s because they were so damn successful, but the franchise has evolved a great deal relative to its somewhat humble beginnings. While the series is deeply associated with the machete-wielding Jason Voorhees these days, let's not forget he wasn't even the killer in the 1980 original. That honor goes to Betsy Palmer's Pamela Voorhees, who was killing in her son's name.
It's a unique beast amongst long-running horror franchises. It's also been quite a while since Jason graced the silver screen. 2009's "Friday the 13th" remake was a big hit, but it was also the last movie in the series — for now, anyway. Much of...

Over on the JoBlo Horror Originals YouTube channel, we talk about horror movies and TV shows all year long, but this is truly the most wonderful time of the year. For many of us, Halloween is our favorite holiday – and to celebrate, the staff at JoBlo Horror Originals has put together a new video to showcase some of our favorite horror movie quotes of all time. This ranges from cult classic lines we repeat to our friends in private to popular lines that are referenced in all of pop culture, and we’re getting into them all. Now, I’m sure there will be some notable exclusions, as we did have to abide by strict copyright rules, but we certainly did our best to include the best of the best. From “Get away from her, you bitch!” to “I have to return some video tapes,” (American Psycho) we’ve got...

The Friday the 13thfranchise has an interesting timeline thanks to the fictional history of its main killer, Jason Voorhees, and his apparent immortality. The story of the Friday the 13th movies chronologically stretches from the 1950s to 25th century, with a reboot and a crossover movie making things even more complicated. Watching the Friday the 13th movies in order isn't a difficult task, though the timeline of events can be confusing as, while all the movies do revolve around the titular day, not all of them give a year for when the events take place.
The chronological order of the Friday the 13th movies starts off simple enough, as most of the first three sequels take place over one continuous stretch of time. However, things start to become more difficult to follow after the first of Jason's on screen deaths, which prompts a brief hiatus for the character, a resurrection...

Over on the JoBlo Horror Originals YouTube channel, we talk about horror movies and TV shows all year long – but that doesn’t mean that the “spooky season” building up to Halloween isn’t a special time of the year for us. I may watch horror movies all year, but for me October is a month-long horror marathon where I try to pack as many horror movies into each day as possible. Halloween is my favorite holiday, and it’s the day when I make sure to watch the likes of FleshEater (1988), Murder Party (2007), The Hollow (2004), Trick or Treat (1986), and Trick ‘r Treat (2007). And maybe something involving Michael Myers. In anticipation of the Halloween festivities, several of our JoBlo Horror Originals staff members got together to give some horror movie recommendations – and you can watch them reveal their Halloween viewing picks in the video embedded above!

Halloween approaches and with it the desire to revisit some of your favorite horror movie franchise, in order, from start to finish. What better franchise to binge than “Friday the 13th,” the celebrated slasher film series that started with Sean S. Cunningham’s 1980 original before spawning sequels that would introduce iconic killer Jason Voorhees before sending him to Manhattan, outer space and back in time (Ok we made that last one up).
Ostensibly the cornerstone of the 1980s slasher film craze, “Friday the 13th” is one of the more inventive franchises, particularly when the concept was given a little more elasticity. For more than a decade, though, the franchise has been fully dormant – the last movie was 2009’s Michael Bay-produced reboot/remake “Friday the 13th.” A24 did recently announce a “Crystal Lake” series to be overseen by “Hannibal”/”Pushing Daisies” mastermind Bryan Fuller, so at least we have that to look forward to!

The best Tony Goldwyn movies and TV shows include Oscar-winning films and one of the most successful television shows in history. Goldwyn has a strong history in Hollywood: His father is film producer Samuel Goldwyn Jr., son of movie mogul Samuel Goldwyn, and his maternal grandparents were playwright Sidney Howard and actress Clare Eames. Quick Links Everything Coming To Paramount+ In October The Best Movies And Shows Coming To Paramount+ This Month
Paramount+ has plenty of new TV shows and movies coming in October 2024, including a lot of horror content for the month of Halloween. Paramount+ launched in March 2021 as a rebranding of the CBS All Access streaming platform, with the goal of expanding its offerings and reach. Thanks to the re-merger between CBS and Viacom in 2019, Paramount+ also has access to Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, and MTV libraries. That usually means that library content is more exciting for subscribers than new content because they can binge existing series.
Unlike some of its competitors, Paramount+ has not put an emphasis on original movie programming except in the case of childrens films. However, the streaming service does have a popular lineup of exclusive original series, including the multiple-timeline and decade-spanning Yellowstone franchise. In September 2024, some of...

The appeal of Chad Stahelski's 2014 actioner "John Wick" was how lean and simple it was. The titular character (Keanu Reeves) was quietly mourning the death of his wife, trying to recover with the puppy she had bought him. When rowdy Russian gangsters kill the dog during a home invasion, John reactivates, revealing that he was once known as the world's most dangerous assassin. He proceeds to take revenge on pretty much the entire criminal underground. The only fantastical wrinkle in "John Wick" was the Continental Hotel, a specialized high-end crash pad for all the world's well-moneyed assassins. The Continental could provide their clientele with medical attention, high-tech body armor, and however many guns they may need (usually a lot).
When a sequel was demanded, however, the filmmakers had to up the ante by heaping in more and more assassination lore, creating a bizarre, outsize world with complicated rules and an unfollowable mythos.

Throughout the Friday the 13th series, many actors have played the iconic killer, Jason Voorhees, some better than others. Jason Voorhees cycled through looks and costumes across the years, as well as actors, many of whom only played the character once. The films sometimes brought in different actors in each movie to stand in for Jason when he wasn't wholly on screen, but each movie generally has one or, in some cases, two actors associated with the role. Many shots of the killer remain faceless, mirroring Jason's menacing yet sneaky killing style.
Jason Voorhees typically wears a hockey mask when his face is shown, which has become synonymous with the killer. The character design allowed him to be played solely by stuntmen since throughout the Friday the 13th franchise, Jason kills but doesn't speak. JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray had the chance to watch the movie at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and gave it a 5/10 review than can be read at This Link – and now, Variety reports that Hell of a Summer has secured a U.S. distribution deal with Neon, which sent Longlegs and Cuckoo out into the world. The company is planning to give Wolfhard and Bryk’s film a theatrical release sometime in 2025.
Months before Hell of a Summer was officially announced, Wolfhard said that he was planning to make his feature directorial debut with “a horror-comedy-slasher movie that takes place at a camp.” Sure enough, that’s what this movie is.

As one of the biggest reveals at Sdcc 2024, Shudder and IFC films announced that a sequel to In a Violent Nature, one of the year's most divisive horror movies, is already in development. Heartbreak comes frequently for Friday the 13th fans. The franchise has had a rough ride over the last couple decades, getting bogged down in legal issues and creative false stars. We get a video game, then the rug is pulled out from under it when it’s just getting started. A movie almost happens, then gets scrapped just weeks before filming was scheduled to begin. The Crystal Lake TV show was just a couple months from filming, then the showrunner gets fired. But worse than all of that is the fact that we’re in a time when actors from our beloved films are passing away very often. Just last month, we lost Erich Anderson, who was in the cast of Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter. Now Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI director Tom McLoughlin has broken the news that Whitney Rydbeck, who played the ill-fated paintball player Roy in his film,...

We’ve learned the sad news this week that actor Whitney Rydbeck, who played a brief but memorable role in Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, has passed away at the age of 79.
Jason Lives director Tom McLoughlin said in a statement to Bloody Disgusting, “I’m heartbroken to share this past Monday night we lost the wonderfully talented physical comedian/actor Whitney Rydbeck. He played Roy the nerdy businessman/paintball player. His comic performance is still making audiences and fans laugh almost 40 years later.”
“I have worked with Whitney for over 53 years,” McLoughlin’s statement continues. “We’ve collaborated on so many projects together. Some as comic partners on stage and film, others on projects I wrote and directed. I specifically wrote the Roy part in Jason Lives for him knowing his unique talent. We also became close friends over these past decades.

There are many things in this weird and wonderful world that go together perfectly; mac and cheese, bacon and eggs, beer and curry, Pegg and Frost, Han Solo and Chewbacca, Affleck and Lopez. Ok, there are some things that go well together. However, there are two popular worlds that are a huge part of this particular writer’s life, that get on together like a house on fire; rock music and horror movies. Both genres embody everything that’s good about their respective industries and over time there have been many collaborations between the two worlds. Various rockers have lent either their musical, or acting, talents to the movie world and horror in particular, including the likes of Ozzy Osbourne, Henry Rollins and David Bowie. What we’re going to focus on primarily is a collaboration between one of the most prominent British rock stars of all time, Lemmy Kilmister,...

Friday the 13th (2009) subverted franchise expectations with fresh twists, humor, and a scarier, more intelligent Jason Voorhees. Jared Padalecki shines as Clay Miller, balancing softness with determination in a thrilling final showdown with Jason. Derek Mears' portrayal of Jason in the reboot was powerful, intimidating, and showcased his height advantage in the climactic brawl.
One of my most memorable experiences at the theater was seeing Friday the 13th (2009) when it premiered, and it's part of the reason why I believe the movie deserves more respect. The theater was packed, and I remember the buzz of excitement from what I assumed were new and old fans of the Friday the 13th franchise. The audience was completely engaged, gasping at the unexpected turn of events, laughing at the jokes, and reacting loudly to every kill. Unfortunately, the remake is looked down upon for a few of the very aspects that make the film great.

Have you ever wanted to see a Friday the 13th movie from Jason Voorhees‘ perspective? What if instead of following around a group of sex-crazed college kids you were just riding shotgun with the killer during his gory rampage through the cursed campground? Well good news you sick, twisted maniac! Chris Nash’s In A Violent Nature is exactly that- A gory forest bound slasher told (almost) exclusively through the eyes of a masked madman back from the dead to seek revenge.
After a group of campers steal a gold locket from a collapsed fire tower, they find themselves hunted by Johnny, the boogeyman of this particular backwoods area. He wants his locket back, and he’ll stop at nothing until it’s in his cold, dead hands again. So, while they smoke pot and drink, tell campfire stories and hook up, Johnny sloooowly makes his way to their camp,...

The most recently announced installment in the franchise is a planned Peacock prequel series with A24 and Bryan Fuller, though the showrunner recently departed the project.

A spinoff of the film franchise, “Freddy’s Nightmares” was an anthology series starring the original Freddy Krueger, Robert Englund. Airing from 1988 to 1990, each episode told a different story of a dark rooted and grim nature that takes place in this fictitious town on Elm Street, and now a brand new book will take us deeper into the series than ever before.
Death Cult Press has announced Welcome to Primetime from authors Geoff Turner, Henrique Couto and David Denover, up for pre-order now ahead of April 1, 2024 release.
“This collection features breakdowns of each episode in the series, interviews with the show’s creators and a selected history of the bizarre world of horror anthology television.”
You can pre-order three different book bundles from Death Cult Press now.
