“The teachers are tough … but their exams are murder.”
It’s tough to be a teacher these days. Not only must they deal with overcrowded classrooms, tough administrators, crusading school boards, and budget cuts, but the actual job of educating youth is much more challenging than most can imagine. And that’s with students who aren’t trying to ruin your life. Douglas Grossman’s 1987 pseudo slasher Hell High features a group of defiant teens hell bent on corrupting their school’s proudest institutions while terrorizing students and teachers alike. They may not be the film’s central antagonists, but this group of young troublemakers may just be the most unlikeable bunch of high schoolers in horror movie history.

Good Boy: "A bold and original thriller from up-and coming director Viljar Bøe. Sigrid thinks she’s met her perfect match with the charming and handsome Christian, but there is one catch- he lives with a man who acts like his pet dog. Trying to be open-minded, Sigrid continues the relationship but soon notices an insidious under-tone to Christian. Maybe ‘puppy play’ isn’t as innocent as it seems."

Right now is an excellent time to be a fan of the horror genre and collector of physical media, as there are so many incredible companies doing great work in the space.
Here are five labels every horror fan should be aware of…
Vinegar Syndrome
If you have a deep interest in film preservation and film archives, you may already know the term “vinegar syndrome” which refers to the chemical process that causes a breakdown of film reels over time. These reels smell strongly like vinegar, hence the name.
Vinegar Syndrome the label was founded in 2012 with the goal to preserve and restore films from the 1960s through the 1980s. Preservation has always been top of mind with Vinegar Syndrome. Still, because of their fantastic preservation and restoration work, we also get some of the best DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K releases on the market from their archive.

With a title like The Hoot Owl, I was expecting a film with the Texan cousin of The Owlman from Lord of Tears and The Black Gloves, or maybe the owl costumed killer from Michele Soavi’s Stagefright. As it turned out this was more like The Hills Have Eyes meets The Evictors than any of those films.
The Hoot Owl begins with clips of a man and a very pregnant woman fleeing something. First in an SUV, then on foot. The guy gets killed and we cut away as the woman tries to hide.
Scott and April have bought a house, apparently sight unseen, out in the middle of nowhere. And, along with Scott’s buddy Drew and April’s sister Suzy are...

By 1989, the slasher genre was declared officially dead. The idea of a deranged killer going on a killing spree had been done to death, and fans and critics alike were bored. However, it was at this point that a little slasher film was released that, unfortunately, fell through the cracks. Hell High, directed and co-written by Douglas Grossman, is one of the more original examples of the subgenre; it follows the specific criteria, but at the same time adds new ingredients to the mix.
