Naseeruddin Shah's role was first offered to Sanjeev Kumar. Anuradha Patel's role was first offered to Smita Patil. By the time the movie went of floors both of them were unfortunately no more.
Refreshing change to see Rekha in the role of the wife. She was usually called to play the 'other woman' in countless movies especially from the South. Her character is shown as an independent, thinking individual even within the confines of traditional society, who decides to move on in life on finding out that her husband is involved with another girl.
The 2 Brothers Shammi and Shashi Kapoor were in this film for the first time together in special appearance. Gulzar worked with them for the first time.
This film was based on the Bengali novel "Jatugriha" written by Subodh Ghosh. The novel had been adapted for a Bengali film with the same title in 1964. The Bengali film "Jatugriha" (1964) starred Uttam Kumar and was directed by Tapan Sinha.
The song Katra Katra was sampled from Jeff Waynes song Horsell Common and the Heat Ray from the album War of Worlds.
