In a movie landscape where the horror never stops, “Longlegs,” released last summer, was able to make more than the usual boo!-and-then-forgotten-in-a-week impact. It was a serial-killer mystery with a suavely creepy atmosphere and a showpiece performance by Nicolas Cage, who camped it up under long hair and pounds of makeup as an androgynous ringmaster sicko who reminded me of no one so much as the character of Witchiepoo from “H.R. Pufnstuf.”
“Longlegs” established its writer-director, Osgood Perkins (the 50-year-old son of Anthony Perkins), as a force in horror. Yet I wasn’t as wild about the movie as a lot of people were. It was most effective when the fear gathered around Cage’s performance. But as the mystery revealed itself, it turned out that we were watching an overcooked supernatural occult evil-doll movie. It was clear that Osgood Perkins had talent, and that he was influenced...

Everyone loves a good villain. Without scenery-chewing, dastardly antagonists for our heroes to fight, things just aren't much fun. Sometimes villains become cultural icons in their own right, like Michael Meyers from the "Halloween" movies or even Jeremy Irons as Scar in "The Lion King." Of course, one of the greatest villains of them all is Hannibal Lecter. Created by author Thomas Harris, "Hannibal the Cannibal" was the baddie in the novels "Red Dragon" in 1981, "The Silence of the Lambs" in 1988, "Hannibal" in 1999, and "Hannibal Rising" in 2006, and his well-mannered eccentricity and fierce bloodlust makes him as alluring as he is terrifying. These books have since been adapted into several Hannibal Lecter movies and an NBC television series, with four different actors having portrayed the aristocratic Lithuanian serial killer, each with their own unique spin.
But who did it best? No one person cast as the clever cannibal was ever truly bad in the role,...

When we discuss Hollywood flops, it's important to stress that the term "flop" has nothing to do with the quality of the film. It's strictly about the movie's extreme financial failure. Francis Ford Coppola's "One from the Heart" was a massive flop, but, over 40 years later, it's now considered by many to be an artistic triumph (something to keep in mind as we move further away from the wipeout of 2024's "Megalopolis"). Brian De Palma's "Casualties of War" was a costly bomb for the legendary filmmaker, but the movie received rave reviews at the time and still stands as one of the greatest Vietnam War films ever made. And while Michael Lehmann's "Hudson Hawk" might've thrown a dent into Bruce Willis' commercial reputation, people with exquisite taste have come to recognize its anarchic genius.
When a non-franchise movie flops, my initial instinct is to find a way to stick up for it,...

When David Fincher directed “Se7en” in 1995, his reputation was strangely bifurcated. On the one hand, he was a supremely successful commercial and music video director at the top of his field, having helmed innovative and influential shorts for icons including Madonna, Sting, and Rick Springfield. On the other, his one attempt at feature filmmaking, “Alien 3,” had been a bust — a critical disappointment liked by virtually no one, including Fincher himself. Although it has since developed a bit of a cult following, Fincher disowned “Alien 3” and famously said that he’d rather die of colon cancer than direct another movie.
Luckily for him, and for us, Fincher changed his mind when he came across Andrew Kevin Walker’s script for “Se7en,” a perfectly calibrated blend of intellectual philosophizing and pulpy exploitation that ended up beautifully served by Fincher’s unerring ability to push the psychic trauma the story inflicted...

Horror and the Academy Awards are famously (and unfortunately) strange bedfellows. Which is strange on the face of it, because even a casual film lover can recognize the huge importance the horror genre has to the medium. So many of Hollywood's most accomplished filmmakers got their start in horror, so many technical innovations were made because of horror movies, and the very grammar of cinema would not be as advanced as it's become without the horror genre. To disregard horror or remove it from any study of the medium is to fundamentally misunderstand cinema, full stop.
If all of that is common knowledge, then why does horror continue to be treated so poorly by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences? The reasons for this are too lengthy and varied to go into detail here, suffice to say that it has to do with an amalgam of antiquated (re:...

While the franchise's on-screen future remains unclear, an underrated Hannibal Lecter adaptation is getting a new streaming home. Based on Thomas Harris' four novels centering on the cannibalistic serial killer, the on-screen journey of the character began in 1986's Manhunter, written and directed by Michael Mann and starring Brian Cox as the iconic killer. Primarily based on the first novel, Red Dragon, the movie failed at the box office and initially garnered mixed reviews, but has gone on to be considered a cult classic.
Arguably, the adaptation that put the franchise on the map was the Anthony Hopkins-led The Silence of the Lambs, one of the few horror movies to get Oscars recognition, winning the big five awards while being nominated for an additional two. Hopkins would carry on the role of Lecter with the 2001 sequel Hannibal, which was a commercial hit in spite of its critical dismissal, and the 2002 prequel Red Dragon,...

Warning! Contains Spoilers For Justice League Unlimited #2!
DC Comics fans know that Superman is often considered one of the most important heroes in the publisher's history. However, just because Superman is given more importance than other characters doesn't mean they don't predate him, at least in the lore. While Superman's character was obviously created first, Martian Manhunter is confirmed to be, essentially, a kind of proto-Superman.
Justice League Unlimited #2 – written by Mark Waid, with art by Dan Mora – continues the new title's premise of teaming up unexpected DC heroes, which leads to a moment where Doctor Occult comments that he sees Martian Manhunter as "Superman before Superman."
This is a pretty fun observation for a few reasons. While Superman definitely predates Martian Manhunter's creation in the real world, the idea that Martian Manhunter existed on Earth first is an exciting part of DC comics in-universe history, due to one simple...

For a long time, my interest in comic books lay purely in the characters themselves – until I read one Batman comic in particular, which taught me to understand how comics work as an art form, and how to recognize the near-invisible ways comic book creators move the reader’s eyes across the page.
My education came when I read the first volume of Batman: Black & White, specifically writer/artist Walter Simonson’s story “Legend,” which originally appeared in issue #2. The story features a mother telling her son a bedtime story of the Batman, a hero from the past who protected the city.
The story’s alt-future scenario makes for a fun romp, but what really floored me was the final page of Simonson’s piece. When the woman goes to her window and opines how she hopes Batman will return someday, she goes to her window, and Simonson shows...

Brian Cox recalls working with Steven Seagal on a 1996 action comedy with an 11% Rotten Tomatoes score. The Scottish actor is best known to modern audiences as Logan Roy from HBO's Succession, receiving three Emmy nominations for his portrayal of the aging and brash patriarch and media mogul. However, as a classically trained Shakespearean actor, Cox has also appeared in many movies from the 1980s to the 2010s as a character actor, including Manhunter, Braveheart, The Boxer, The Rookie, Troy, Adaptation, X2, and Churchill.
Over his career, Cox has been outspoken about his co-stars and fellow actors, famously and frequently voicing his disapproval of his co-star Jeremy Strong's method acting on the set of Succession. He also recently discussed his co-star Daniel Day-Lewis' method acting on the 1997 film The Boxer, calling his approach "a little off-putting." Cox also recently called out the Academy Awards for honoring Gary Oldman's performance...

Brian Cox reveals that he and Anthony Hopkins agreed not to talk about both playing Hannibal Lecter in Manhunter (1986) and The Silence of the Lambs (1991), respectively. Based on the Thomas Harris novels, Hanniba's first movie appearance was in Michael Mann's Manhunter, which follows FBI profiler Will Graham (William Petersen) as he consults with Lecter as he chases a killer dubbed the "tooth fairy." Jonathan Demme's Silence of the Lambs features a similar setup, with Jodie Foster's Clarice Starling working with Lecter to catch serial killer Jame Gumb (Ted Levine).
During a recent interview with THR in which he looks back at his decades-long career, Cox reflects on playing Hannibal in Manhunter only a few years before Hopkins would take on the same role in The Silence of the Lambs to much greater acclaim. Trying to recapture the movie magic made by a beloved big-screen entry is always a risky game to play, but perhaps even more so when the new direction is television. Can a handful of episodes really deliver the same standard or even surpass what came before without staining the reputation of the property it's based on? Annoyingly, that is often the case, but there are a handful of television shows inspired by films that've actually surprised us in the best way by being not just good, but great even.
After they've gotten over the hurdles of winking at the audience with the world they've knowingly venturing into, some of the best films turned TV shows have been ones that have gone off and done their own thing. They don't go beat for beat with what's already been done before, but expand upon it by way of new characters, wild plot threads,...

Netflix's charming new Christmas movie, That Christmas, is now streaming and features a star-studded cast. One of several new Christmas movies in 2024, That Christmas tells the story of the fictional town, Wellington-on-Sea, which faces an unprecedented snowstorm just before Christmas Day. Not only does this pose significant difficulties for Santa Claus as he attempts to deliver the presents, but it also means that many of the children in town end up separated from their parents on Christmas Eve.
That Christmas was co-written by Richard Curtis, who also wrote and directed the Christmas classic Love Actually, one of the best Christmas movies for rom-com fans. The Joker doesn't technically have any superpowers - certainly not as many as Superman - which is why it's so surprising that he does have one power that Kryptonians lack. While Superman has super speed, strength, flight, and heat vision, the Joker has a remarkable level of resistance to psychic attack, way more than Superman does.
The surprising superpower of the Joker was revealed in The Joker #5 by Martin Pasko and Irv Novick. The Joker is once again up to mischief and decides to steal a group of paintings. Unfortunately, the Royal Flush gang has also set their sights on the prized paintings, leading to an all-out brawl between the Joker and the Royal Flush gang. Shockingly, the Royal Flush Gang's powers don't work on the Joker.
The Royal Flush gang often uses playing cards that have effects on their targets, such as making them fall asleep or driving them to rage.

The Silence of the Lambs is one of the most influential films of the last 40 years. Jonathan Demme wasted no time adapting Ted Tallys 1998 novel into a vehicle that earned Jodie Foster her second Oscar in three years and confirmed Anthony Hopkins was a movie star. The line between horror and thriller is drawn at the center of this film, and it pioneered both genres.

Fact: E.T. is a Halloween movie. Make no mistake about that. The landmark Steven Spielberg blockbuster primarily takes place in October with the most iconic sequence — that being the moon-tinted bike ride, which has become the literal logo for Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment — goes down on All Hallow’s Eve. So, consider this episode a timely treat.
At last month’s Creep I.E. Aftermath in Ontario, California, Halloweenies executive producer Michael Roffman and Scare You to Sleep creator Shelby Scott presided over an E.T. reunion panel featuring stars Henry Thomas, Dee Wallace, Robert MacNaughton, C. Thomas Howell, and Matthew De Meritt. Together, they share personal anecdotes on the film’s shoot and reflect on the way the film went on to shape modern Americana — seemingly overnight.

Luca Guadagnino and Lionsgate announced that the “Call Me by Your Name” and “Queer” director is in final discussions to film a new version of Bret Eason Ellis’ dark horror novel “American Psycho,” nearly 25 years after the same company released Mary Harron’s satirical adaptation. In a key role that elevated his career, the 2000 film starred Christian Bale as yuppie investment banker-turned-serial killer Patrick Bateman.
It’s the kind of announcement destined to raise eyebrows. Guadagnino is in a career sweet spot after “Challengers” and “Queer” this year (and “After the Hunt” in post); he already has many projects in the works, including “Separate Rooms” with Josh O’Connor and a Thomas Mann adaptation in early development. So why is he choosing a remake — and for a film that doesn’t seem that long ago?
New versions of older films are not unusual. Even the word “remake” is tricky here — does that apply with adaptations?...

Here’s a special spooky treat, trick or treaters: Earlier this week, We Hate Movies co-hosts Andrew Jupin and Eric Szyszka joined fellow Halloweenies co-hosts Dan Caffrey and Michael Roffman in Haddonfield to talk all things Michael Myers and the Halloween franchise.
From the all-time highs that got them into the genre to the deep, dark doldrums of the series, the four carve through one pumpkin after another. They also discuss why aesthetic is so integral to horror, their podcast roots, and why Dr. Loomis is so much fun to impersonate.
Want more from our friends? We Hate Movies will be covering horror films for the rest of this month, new episodes released on Mondays wherever you get your podcasts. This past week, they hit up Fiddler’s Green to discuss George A. Romero’s Land of the Dead.

The Halloweenies continue a new October tradition! Last year, co-hosts Michael Roffman and Dan Caffrey ventured to the Haddonfield Public Library to read Curtis Richards‘ excellent 1979 screen-to-page adaptation of John Carpenter‘s Halloween. Fortunately for them, for us, for you, there are several more novelizations, and they’re going through ’em all.
This year sees the two dust off the late Dennis Etchison’s, whose pseudonym Jack Martin is credited here, 1981 novelization for Halloween II. Together, Roffman and Caffrey discuss Etchison’s writing style, the additional scenes that bridge the gaps between the scenes we know by heart, the confusing dreams of Laurie Strode, and more.

It's technically the third film in the franchise, so how does Hannibal Lecter's outing Red Dragon fit into the series timeline? Despite the huge success of The Silence Of The Lambs - including winning Oscars for Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Actress - it once seemed there would be no sequels. Production on any follow-up was delayed until author Thomas Harris completed his sequel novel, Hannibal. Harris is famously not the most prolific of writers (having penned six novels total since his 1975 debut Black Sunday), which means it took nearly a decade for Hannibal to arrive.
It was something of a polarizing novel too, with Jodie Foster even turning down the Hannibal movie. At the very least, it convinced Anthony Hopkins to return to the role of Lecter, with the actor being a hammy delight. After years of waiting, the sequel reinvigorated the series, with two more movies following soon after.

The Hannibal movies, in order, helped turn the doctor into one of cinema's most charismatic villains, Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Through creepy yet captivating dialogue, viewers get acquainted with his grisly acts of violence, his chilling intellect, and his criminal history. The character was created by author Thomas Harris, and his Hannibal Lecter books have all been adapted into series and movies with confusing timelines. To make matters worse, some actors appeared in multiple Hannibal Lecter movies playing different parts.
The combined popularity of the novels along with Hopkins' Oscar-winning portrayal inspired further onscreen depictions of the cannibal's origins. As more movies and series followed, a breakdown was necessary to understand and separate the release date from the chronological unfolding of events in Hannibal Lecter's life. For fans interested in the series kicked off by The Silence of the Lambs, this is the way to watch the Hannibal Lecter movies in order.

John Waters' satirical black comedy horror Serial Mom led many viewers to believe that the movie was based on a true story, though that claim is not entirely true. One of John Waters' classic movies, Serial Mom, stars Kathleen Turner as Beverly Sutphin, an unassuming upper-middle-class housewife who has a dark secret: she is a serial killer. The targets of her murders are anyone she feels has offended her or broken the unsaid rules about quiet, suburban life. As the police get closer to catching her, Beverly doubles down on the killing.
Though Serial Mom flopped at the box office, it has grown into a cult classic. The dedicated performances by Turner, Sam Waterston, Ricki Lake, and a young Matthew Lillard as well as some clever kills make Serial Mom a film that's a joy to watch from start to finish. Warner Bros., the company that owns the rights to DC Comics characters, aimed to create its own version of the MCU after witnessing the massive success of Disney’s franchise, leading to the establishment of the Dceu. Despite its potential, star power, and some remarkable films, the Dceu was doomed by poor decisions and missteps along the way.
Eventually, Zack Snyder, the former head of the Dceu, was “fired,” and James Gunn was brought in to take over. When Gunn stepped in, the Dceu was in complete disarray, so he decided to start fresh with a new fictional universe—the Dcu. The first phase, titled Gods and Monsters, has already begun.
Gunn is currently working on a Superman film set to release next year, which will be the central piece of this first phase. While much is known about the movie, it seems Gunn may still have some surprises up...

One of the biggest what-if stories in all of superhero media has just become that much more interesting, with a new, never-before-seen reveal of one of its core cast members. Long before Zack Snyder ever tried to bring the DC pantheon to life on the big screen, director George Miller practically scratched and clawed every step of the way in order to turn the fabled blockbuster "Justice League: Mortal" into a reality. By now, superhero fans have lived for years with hints and rumors of what this team-up film would've looked like. The original pitch would've starred Armie Hammer as Batman, Megan Gale as Wonder Woman, D.J. Cotrona as Superman, Adam Brody as The Flash, Jay Baruchel as Maxwell Lord, and, yes, none other than Common as the Green Lantern.

We Finally Know What George Miller’s Martian Manhunter Would’ve Looked Like in Justice League Mortal
Finally, the Martian Manhunter has revealed himself. A founding member of DC‘s Justice League of America, the shape-shifting Martian J’onn J’onzz was slated to appear in one of the most infamous canceled movie projects, the Justice League film almost directed by Mad Max creator George Miller.
Miller’s Justice League: Mortal would have featured the “Big Seven” most associated with the Justice League, including the Martian Manhunter. And to play the Manhunter, Miller turned to one of his favorite collaborators, Hugh Keays-Byrne, who played Toecutter in the first Mad Max film and would later go on to play Immortan Joe in Mad Max: Fury Road.
Thanks to new behind-the-scenes photos posted by prosthetics artist Antony McMullen, we can finally see what the big screen version of Martian Manhunter would have looked like, as envisioned by Miller and his team. And he looks… pretty much like Martian Manhunter.

There are a lot of negative words thrown around superhero films these days and it definitely stings a lot, especially for avid fans of Marvel and DC, but Brian Cox is the perfect example of someone who cannot make up his mind.

The Scottish actor, known for his works on Succession and Manhunter, has a new tirade against comic book movies becoming the dominating force at the box office. He’s particularly not impressed with the state of cinema that influences our generation.
Brian Cox Slams Comic Book Films While Supporting An X-Men Director
Brian Cox has been very vocal about his aversion to superhero movies, but unlike Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino, both veteran filmmakers who have firm deep-seated dislike for Marvel films, the 78-year-old Shakespearean actor has conflicting comments about it.
First, let’s focus on his new criticism of Deadpool & Wolverine.

Best neo-noirs of the 1980s paid tribute to film noir while adding new elements, deserving more attention today. Underrated releases like Blue City and Manhunter had creative, quality storylines often overlooked. Iconic performances in films like Gloria and Mona Lisa subverted neo-noir stereotypes, adding new depth.

James Cameron is the unquestioned king of the box office. Three of the biggest movies of all time, "Avatar," "Avatar: The Way of Water," and "Titanic," were all directed by him. Were it not for 2019's "Avengers: Endgame," he would own the top three all by his lonesome.
