The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III feels like the beginning of the final episode of an extremely well-written and long-running television series. You start to see the proverbial end of the road for our hero, who will inevitably encounter several beloved characters from previous episodes, not to mention a few tragic moments. And while the game doesn’t wrap up the story completely — that will come in Trails of Cold Steel IV — it’s still a satisfying and deeply engrossing experience that fans of the series will no doubt fall madly in love with when all’s said and done. However, just keep in mind that you should definitely play the previous entries in the Cold Steel series before jumping into this one. Sure, you powered through The Witcher 3 without playing the previous installments, but Cold Steel is a different beast altogether. This will ultimately require you...

The Last Tycoon
Directed by Wong Jing
Written by Wong Jing, Manfred Wong and Koon-nam Lui
China, 2012
For the last little while now, Chinese cinema, Hong Kong-made films in particular, have been beating on the nationalism drum with George Kollias-esque intentensity. It’s not enough for films to just be about loose-cannon cops named after Mexican booze or guys in pajamas fighting monkeys, everything has to be, on an explicit level, about the nation, the people and patriotism.
-
Donnie Yen’s Ip Man movies and Fist of Legend sequel, Jackie Chan’s 1911, and David Wu’s Cold Steel, which hit Fantasia last year, are all good examples of this.
Screening at Fantasia this year, Wong Jing’s period crime drama The Last Tycoon is a solid addition to that list, setting the story of a Shanghai crime boss against the Japanese attack and occupation of Shanghai in WW2.

Noted editor and director David Wu blasted back into Chinese cinemas in 2011 with “Cold Steel”, a wartime sniper thriller that after enjoying success at international festivals finally lands on DVD. Wu has certainly had an interesting career, having worked with John Woo as editor on several of his classics including “A Better Tomorrow”, “Bullet in the Head” and “Hard Boiled”, as well as directing “The Bride with White Hair 2”, before enjoying success in the Us as a director of genre and television fare. For his return to Asia, Wu assembled an interesting cast, headlined by Peter Ho (“Sophie’s Revenge”) and veteran Tony Leung Ka Fai (“Election”), with support from actress Song Jia (“Once Upon a Time in Tibet”), martial artist Yu Rong Guang (“Iron Monkey”), television star Wilson Guo (“Palace”) and John Woo’s daughter Angeles Woo (“Reign of Assassins”). Based on a popular online novel, the film sees Ho as Mu Liangfeng,...

They've lost their jobs, their homes, their life savings. In addressing the crisis, the government bailout has not addressed the problem, but instead will have a horrific impact on state economies for generations to come. The bailout has proven more costly than the world's collected history of wars and natural disasters. Every year Fantastic Fest is at the forefront of genre film programming, providing a veritable feast of degradation, mutilation and violence to it’s utterly insatiable audiences.
Many times you’ll notice a specific thematic trend begin to emerge among the films selected by the fest’s demented programmers. For instance this year I must have counted at least six features that in some form revolved around obscene amounts of cocaine (lost, found, or snorted). This may be due in part to the bevy of stylized action films that try with mixed success to emulate Guy Ritchie, or as my favorite local film/beer/food snob Brian Kelley puts it, try to emulate Guy Ritchie emulating himself.
Ok I’ll admit it, Black Out and Pusher were actually pretty cool, but the real fun to be had this festival wasn’t to be found at the bottom of a brick,...

It occurred to me halfway through Cold Steel (Bian di lang yan) that Fantastic Fest has no icon for "romance." There's "comedy" and even "date movie," which seems relegated only to ironic situations, but no "romance." I'm sure that's because some festivalgoers get that same squeamish feeling seeing "romance" next to a film that I get seeing "pet abuse." But David Wu's new feature is, in many ways, a very romantic film, from the actual love story between the war-torn main characters to the rich cinematography. As a man better known among the Fantastic Fest crowd for his association with hardcore action movies such as Bullet in the Head and A Better Tomorrow, his new film has a softer feel even amongst the sniper violence.
Set in China during World War II, Cold Steel focuses on the Japanese takeover of the country, and an elite sniper team tasked with blunting Japan's conquest.

Having its sweet 16th anniversary this year, Toronto's Reel Asian Film Festival continues to showcase cinema from from China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Kashmir, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand; this also includes films from Canada and USA with an Asian bent. As it was last year, the festival will be presented in two parts: November 6-11 in Toronto and November 16-17 in Richmond Hill (just outside the city).Having seen the lovely 35mm print of Cold Steel, anyone who loves classic Hong Kong melodrama would be advised to check out David Wu's film, a throwback to 1980s and 1990s John Woo classics (for which Wu served as editor), but also a humorous reaction to Woo's bombastic tendencies. It's a film that sneaks right up and charms its audience, including...

Mu, a young hunter with a staggering talent behind the eyepiece of a sniper rifle, saves an American pilot shot down by the Japanese in WWII-era China. When he returns to his village with his wounded new friend, he finds a trio of Chinese soldiers stirring up trouble in the local tea house and insulting the lovely widowed owner; something he cannot abide. His intervening actions land him on a prisoner transport, but when that transport is attacked by Japanese snipers, Mu demonstrates his lethal abilities to get them out of their dangerous predicament. He is immediately given a choice: enlist or be shot. Assigned to an elite sharpshooting corps, Mu becomes a local hero for his valor and the success rate of his team’s missions. This...

Fantastic Fest is truly a unique event. There’s plenty of room for arthouse films and, on some occasions, the big awards players, but one theater that hosts There Will Be Blood might, the next night, see the premiere of something you’d catch on a weird cable station at 3 A.M. You don’t get that at Venice.
Such a programming mentality is reflected in the second set of titles: We have Leos Carax‘s acclaimed Holy Motors, Rian Johnson‘s Looper, horror anthology The ABCs of Death (as if it could premiere anywhere else), Sinister, and a whole batch of films I’d never heard of up until now. It’s wonderfully eclectic, and it only makes me wish I could be there come late September.

An adolescent’s sixteenth birthday marks a turning point in life when maturation occurs at a much more rapid pace and the teenager begins to be faced with difficult and important decisions that will shape their future. The same can be said of Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival, set to kick off its sixteenth edition tomorrow: its Super Sweet Sixteen promises to be nothing if not interesting. That’s not to say that the main focus of North America’s largest genre film festival is changing; in fact, between prolific director Takashi Miike’s festival opener For Love’s Sake – fresh from Cannes and having its North American premiere – and the Canadian premiere of animation studio Laika’s Paranorman, which closes the fest three weeks later, filmgoers will have a whopping 160 films from around the world to choose from. Sitges eat your heart out.

You know, whenever I open my mailbox and find a package of DVDs from Planet Fury, I throw up a little bit in my mouth. "Why?", you might ask. Because I know that, in among the really good flicks, there's going to be a really bad one. Not a "so bad it's good" flickershow. Those, I love. No...I mean really Bad.
And then there's A Darker Reality.
A Darker Reality follows the investigation of Lapd Detective Alex "Cold Steel" Belasco (Burns) and Dr. Jesse Metcalf (Doench) as they hunt for a serial killer known as "The Ghost" (Baldwin). Actually, the two of them spend a great deal of the time seeing who can overact more. And the "Maurice Evans Ham Award" for 2008 goes to...Daniel Baldwin! So that's where those excess pounds came from,...

Today, I am now more prepared than ever for the zombie apocalypse. Not content with just being a fan of TV and movies, I’ve always been a collector of props and merch from, or related to, my favorite shows and films. So it was with great excitement that I opened a package yesterday after the FedEx man showed up with a surprise. Thanks to the good folks over at Gerber (the blade company, not the baby food company) the FM office is now stocked with one of Gerber’s Apocalypse Kits, straight out of The Walking Dead season 2 premiere. Remember when Rick’s son pried that case from the dead man in the pick-up truck? Remember how when they unrolled it the first time and you saw all those blades you thought to yourself, “Holy [naughty word], that’s awesome! That would be amazing if it was real!” And now it is.

Longtime collaborator with John Woo, editor David Wu has worked on some of the greatest action movies to come out of Asia, including Hard Boiled, A Better Tomorrow and Red Cliff. While Wu has been keeping himself busy directing plenty of TV, it has been close to 20 years since he has directed a film, but this year he stepped behind the camera to bring us Cold Steel, a rather impressive looking sniper thriller.Unsurprisingly for a mainland actioner, Cold Steel does have a period setting, and seems to revolve around a young hunter whose prowess with a rifle makes him a useful tool when the Chinese look to fend off their Japanese invaders. The film stars Tony Leung Ka Fai, Peter Ho and John Woo's...

The trailer for director David Wu’s “Cold Steel” — a clip which has been carefully embedded below — could be a hell of a lot of fun. Everything you could possibly want from a Chinese action flick is in full effect, especially if you like your sex and carnage presented in an insanely stylish fashion. This is pretty impressive, given that Wu’s 2003 made-for-tv horror flick “Webs” is woefully inept. I’m willing to forget all about that particular endeavor given how jazzed I am about the project. “Cold Steel”, which opens in China on December 2nd, 2011, stars Tony Leung Ka-Fai, Peter Ho, Song Jia, Yu Rong-Guang, and Angeles Woo, the latter of whom is John Woo’s daughter. Nifty! The trailer you seek lies below. English-subtitled DVD, please make haste...

I know Glenn already wrote a glowing review of the film, but after it won the Palm d’Or at Cannes I was compelled to see it and, as a result, had the nagging urge to write about it.
Black emptiness. Then a pinpoint of light dawns, brightens and grows into a warm, womb-like representation of a magnificent force. One that gives birth to our universe in a mesmerizing new beginning bursting with interpretation.
A sweeping progression of Earth’s ensuing evolution relaxes; moving postcards that wander through time and space or drift over untouched landscapes, accompanied by soothing orchestral movements or operatic swells for emotional effect.
We indulge in a lingering shot of a single leaf skittering along a sidewalk or in a ponderous stare at our slowly shifting cosmos. The slides slow for a natural encounter with docile dinosaurs before defying gravity to witness their ultimate destruction as...

Cold Magic is set in a world where much of the continents are covered in ice. In many ways it is similar to ours in the Victorian age, on the brink of an industrial revolution. In the cities factories, gas lights and dirigibles are beginning to appear, and the new technologies are taught at the University to young men and women alike. The Cold mages, keepers of the old order, are strongly opposed to these new developments, and claim that they will destroy society.
Catherine "Cat" Hassi Barahal is an orphan. She has been raised alongside her two month younger cousin Beatrice "Bee" since her parents died in a drowning accident when she was six. Her father was an explorer, and her mother a soldier deserting the army of a Napoleon-like general who tried to take over most of the continent of Europa and was imprisoned on a small island for his crimes.
