If you were part of the clean-up crew taking care of a murder scene, and you found a suitcase full of cash, what would you do? If you have an Iq that’s at least in the double digits or have seen more than a couple of action films, you probably know taking it won’t end well.
But that doesn’t stop Siobhan, the owner of Good Life Cleaners and her crew, Alex, his girlfriend Megan and Chuck from doing just that when they find a few million in cash stashed in the chimney of the house they’re cleaning up.
That money belongs to Gabriel and was meant to pay off some crooked cops until somebody else’s attempt to steal it resulted in a pile...

For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit the short-lived, kid-friendly horror series “Deadtime Stories,” which aired on Nickelodeon from 2012-2014.
For many years in the aughts, after Nickelodeon brought “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” to a close, the channel spent a lot of time investing in teen comedies and sitcoms. But with the resurgence of horror television around 2012, Nickelodeon began trying their hand at the horror genre once again. “Deadtime Stories” was born, an anthology horror-fantasy television series written by Annette Cascone and based on the Scholastic book series of the same title, which was created by both Annette and Gina Cascone.
“Deadtime Stories” premiered on Nickelodeon shortly after Halloween in 2012. The series, despite its title, was geared primarily for the age 7-10 crowd, and it amounted to some good gateway horror for budding horror geeks. Directed mainly by Daniel Hillebrand, “Deadtime Stories” featured some interesting guest stars like Diane Ladd,...

’90s nostalgia is in full swing, and horror fans are loving it. Many people are revisiting movies they grew up with, while others are discovering those same titles for the first time. And it’s not only cinematic terror that has everyone talking.
Over the past couple of years, the interest in retro books has been on the rise. Combined with ’90s sentimentality, teen horror fiction from the decade has become a special niche for collectors, many of whom are part of Instagram’s enthusiastic community of “bookstagrammers.”
A large portion of the teen horror titles released during the ’90s are now available in e-book format, but the original editions with their colorful covers and witty taglines are the ones we look for while perusing the shelves of used bookstores.
Here at Daily Dead, during a series of seasonal posts, I’m going to be sharing books from my own collection.

One of the lesser-known horror anthologies of the 1980s, 1986’s Deadtime Stories is a title of which I’ve been familiar for years, but it took me a long time to actually get around to seeing it. And because of the film’s long history of botched home video releases, the versions I’ve been able to watch in the past haven’t been of the best quality. As a result, I had an unfair opinion of the movie. Thankfully, Scream Factory has put Deadtime Stories out on Blu-ray for the first time and allowed me the opportunity not just to revisit it, but to revise my opinion. It’s more fun than I gave it credit for.

Scream Factory is resurrecting the anthology Deadtime Stories in HD this week, and Tibor Takacs’ creature feature cult classic, The Gate, is getting the Vestron Video Collector’s Series treatment on February 28th as well.
This Tuesday, Vinegar Syndrome is giving a high-def overhaul to another cult classic, Slaughterhouse, and for those who may have missed it during its successful festival run, Arrow Video is releasing We Are The Flesh on multiple formats, too.
Other notable releases for February 28th include Doctor Strange, Ape 3D (aka A*P*E*), Child Eater, The Raid Collection, The Creature Below, Shut In, and When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth (1970).

Some films are built from Wtf moments. Case in point: I have finally seen The Mutilator (1984), an unnaturally entertaining hack ‘em up from a period when the dirt had all but covered the coffin of the overworked subgenre. And this film has more than its share of Wtf – in fact, it acts as a Viking funeral for slashers of the era, an absurd catalogue of tropes transmitted with an ‘80s sitcom aesthetic and just as eager to please. What a sight to behold.
Aka Fall Break (a name that will be seared onto your brain pan within the first 15 minutes, trust me), The Mutilator was filmed in North Carolina by local boy Buddy Cooper, who came into some money and decided to either make a movie or buy a winery. And old Buddy boy sure made the right choice – no wine could be sweeter (or more fragrant) than this glorious display of splatter cinema.

What more can be said about The Scream Factory? They're like the real life Santa Claus for horror fans. Over on their official Facebook page they've announced two new horror Blu-rays from John Carpenter... Body Bags and my personal favorite Prince of Darkness.
"John Carpenter's Body Bags will be unzipped and presented on Blu-ray from us before 2013 closes. Didn't see that one coming, did you? That's all we can disclose at the moment. More details to be revealed in July/Aug."
Synopsis
This trilogy of horror comes from the gleefully demented minds of horror masters John Carpenter and Tobe Hooper. Three tales are told, each one increasingly terrifying. The first tells the story of a woman being stalked by an axe-weilding maniac. The second is the story of a man who pays the ultimate price for a beautiful head of hair. Horror anthologies always sound like a great idea during ideological conception, but unfortunately either end up being super hits or miserable misses. On the positive end you have a variety of well thought out short stories in films like Trick ‘R Treat and Creepshow, while others like The Theatre Bizarre and Deadtime Stories jam-pack one or two truly entertaining entries in between a load of garbage that bogs the overall film down. Chillerama is a great example of such wasted potential, delivering three killer short horror films by some of my favorite current directors, but disheartens with a short so unfathomably unwatchable, you have no choice but to give the entire film a failing grade just on principle.
Then along came V/H/S, a unique little horror collaboration piece that brought together budding genre directors like Ti West, Joe Swanberg, and Adam Wingard – only to challenge them with a fun restraint.

Remember in Kill Bill Vol. 2 when David Carradine (Bill) explains to Uma Thurman (Ms. Kiddo) why he finds Superman to be the most fascinating of all super heroes? Basically he says that Clark Kent is Superman’s vision of humanity, his criticism and his observation of man. He says it with a slow drawl and makes you feel all gushy and warm up until he hits the punch line when you get the feeling like you might just wanna punch Superman in the face for belittling us so. Yes, we are the dorks you have been looking for. We are the weak people of Earth who where suits and ties and spectacles, but you know what? We also invented the fuck out of you, Superman! One reason Deadtime Stories may not so well remembered today could be because, as its theme song so astutely notes, those bedtime tales we were told as a kid were already quite screwed up when you stop and think about it.
A wolf that tries to eat a little girl after killing her grandmother and disguising itself as her, another wolf that wants to eat three innocent pigs and is willing to destroy their homes to get to them, a cannibalistic witch only thwarted when kids burn her alive in her own oven: three classic bedtime stories, like so many others, that if they weren’t considered centuries old classics would by today standards be considered too dark and violent for little kids.
The 1986 anthology Deadtime Stories put an even more horrifying twist on the classic tales of a boy confronting a wicked witch, a modern spin on “Little Red Riding Hood...

Scary or Die is a horror anthology from Bob Badway, Michael Emanuel and Igor Meglic. Badway is known for his other horror outing titled The Uninvited. Emanuel might be known for 2009's Maneater, but he is likely best known for his many acting roles. This is Meglic's first go as director. There are five stories within Scary or Die, with Emanuel directing the bulk of them ("Clowned," "Lover Comes Back," "The Crossing"). Meglic produced one, titled "Taejung's Lament." The worst story of the bunch, "Re-membered," is not attached to any director.

Anthologies are rather prevalent in the horror genre as of late, and by late, I mean in the past few years. Trick r’ Treat seemed to have ushered in an era of anthologies that tried to be similar to Creepshow in that they have all tried to create an image that is lasting. Though many disagree with me, I think Chillerama was competent for what it was trying to achieve. I don’t think it’s amazing or that it will be talked about years from now, but it was not a horrible addition to the sub-genre. Deadtime Stories was a miss but does anyone think that a film with Romero’s name attached with actually be good? So here we are with The Theatre Bizarre, a cheaply made anthology that combines the work of 7 directors (six stories, one connecting thread). Each director was given a set amount of money...

Blue Underground recently announced that they will be releasing a 2-disc Ultimate Edition Blu-ray of Lucio Fulci’s Zombie. There are many horror fans that may not be aware of the process involved in converting an older film to HD, so Blue Underground has released a short video, showing the process of taking the original Zombie film negative and restoring it in high definition for the Blu-ray release.
The Blu-ray edition of Zombie will be available on October 25th, and we’ve included the previously released disc information, cover art, and trailer.
“Blue Underground is proud to present Zombie in a new 2K High Definition transfer from the original uncut and uncensored camera negative. Each flesh-eating frame has been lovingly restored to skull-rotting perfection under the supervision of Cinematographer Sergio Salvati (The Beyond). Ive been anticipating George Romeros Deadtime Stories Volume 1 for some time (its been a difficult find locally, and honestly I hadnt sought out the film on Netflix, as my queue already consists of too many films to count), and last night I finally got my hands on a copy. Sadly, Im far from convinced the film lived up to its hype (which has been fairly minimal, but existent just the same). First off, I pulled up imdb.com this morning to c…...

There’s just something sticky and icky about Lucio Fulci’s 1981 gorefest in Zombie, which is loosely a follow-up to the events in Dawn of the Dead. The gore is outrageous. The zombies are nasty decaying corpses. The women have nice boobs and big bushes, and of course: there’s a sequence that pits a zombie against a shark!
And, finally, Blue Underground is bringing this bad mama-jama to HD for the first time ever on October 25th.
Here’s the details:
In Italy, it was considered the ‘unofficial sequel’ to Dawn Of The Dead. In England, it was known as Zombie Flesh Eaters and banned as obscene. In America, it was called Zombie and advertised with the depraved tag line “We Are Going To Eat You!” Tisa Farrow (The Grim Reaper), Ian McCulloch (Contamination), Al Cliver (Cannibals), and Richard Johnson (The Haunting) star in this worldwide splatter sensation directed...

Nightmare After years of talk, it seems that the early 80's horror slasher Nightmare is inching even closer to a DVD release date. Code Red has been promising this title for years while fans have grown impatient. Last year, this title alone nearly bankrupted Code Red as compossing special features for the film started costing them an arm and leg. Somehow or another, Code Red managed to survive and now it seems that Code Red could finally be releasing this title sometime in July. This is all the more evident by an all new special feature Code Red has put together for the film.
From the Code Red blog::
Special effects make-up artist Edward French, Oscar Nominee and Emmy Winner, quickly gave Code Red a last minute interview regarding the New York gore scene in Nightmare! French told us about his involvement in the effects, including who made the decapitated head,...

It is that time of year again when Dread Central pays its respects to those who have worked in our beloved genre and made it to the red carpet on Oscar night 2011. The genre was in rare form when it came to the nominations. Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan was up for the gold in multiple categories (best picture, best actress, cinematography, and direction); even The Wolfman was on the short-list for best make-up. And win we did.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves because therein lie the gems of VHS past for a large share of both the winners and folks who were nominated. Highlights include a win for Melissa Leo (nominated two years ago for Frozen River), whom we remember best as Judith 'MaMa' Baer in Deadtime Stories. And who could forget Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman in American Psycho? My fellow fright fiends, he brought home the gold last night.

It’s time once again for horror at the Oscars. Sunday’s festivities were filled with folks who have worked in the genre and per usual, I feel if it’s a win for Danny Boyle, it is a win for rage-zombie fans everywhere. Seems like a lot of folks this year are veterans of Exorcist: The Beginning, Amityville: A New Generation and Gremlins 2: The New Batch. Of course, the most important genre win would be Greg Cannom, a staple of 80’s horror effects; he worked on such films as Fright Night Part 2, The Lost Boys and The Howling.
Now some movies on this list might be “kinda horror.” These thrillers or genre-friendly frameworks are on the ghoulish cusp and are marked with an asterisk. Some flicks on the list are there because, what the fuck,...
