Walter Hill‘s “Southern Comfort” didn’t find an audience upon its release in 1981, but when it kicked off the first weekend of the 12th annual Beyond Fest at the American Cinematheque, it played to a sold-out crowd that responded to the film with the rapture it always deserved. Hill couldn’t have been more pleased or surprised. “When they told me they wanted to do this, I thought, ‘Christ, nobody will come,'” Hill told the audience at a post-screening Q&a. “I can’t believe that all of you came out tonight.”
Hill was joined on stage by actor Keith Carradine, his frequent collaborator on films including “The Long Riders” and “Wild Bill.” Both men agreed that Hill’s harrowing tale (cowritten with Michael Kane and David Giler) of National Guardsmen being picked off one by one by vengeful Cajuns in a Louisiana swamp was one of the...

The Story: A covert army unit goes to war with Cash Bailey (Powers Boothe), a well-connected drug dealer, who also happens to be the childhood best friend of an honest Texas Ranger (Nick Nolte) who’s caught in the middle of what’s turning into a bloody drug war.

The History: Let me take a moment here to pay tribute to an actor who never gets his due anymore: the late Powers Boothe. This post contains spoilers for "John Wick: Chapter 4."
Movies and television are, of course, primarily visual mediums; having looks that kill goes a long way for an actor's career. However, one must not discount sound completely — having an extraordinary voice can also make an actor that much more desirable.
One of the world's greatest living voices belongs to Clancy Brown, and he's been handsomely rewarded for it (rightfully) with a lengthy and storied career. Brown's honeyed, dulcet tones have graced the screen in everything from "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension" to "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs," and his versatile character voices have turned up in animation as varied as series like "Gargoyles" and "Spongebob SquarePants."
Director Chad Stahelski is certainly well aware of Brown's prowess as a character actor, including his formidable presence and commanding voice. The actor brings all of this to his performance...

It was 30 years ago that TriStar Pictures released Total Recall, a sci-fi action movie directed by Paul Verhoeven and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ronny Cox, Sharon Stone, Michael Ironside, and Rachel Ticotin. Based loosely on a story by Philip K. Dick called “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale,” the movie starred Schwarzenegger as Douglas Quaid, a construction worker in the year 2084 who begins having strange dreams about a mysterious woman and the Earth colony that exists on Mars.
His wife Lori (Stone) dismisses the dreams, but it turns out they’re not dreams at all but memories: Quaid is actually a secret agent named Hauser who once worked for the governor of the Martian colony (Cox) but has had his memories wiped and replaced with false ones. Lori is not his wife at all, but an operative for the governor and the wife of Richter (Ironside), the governor’s ruthless fixer.

Editor Billy Weber has been one of reclusive filmmaker Terrence Malick’s preferred craftspeople. Their relationship has spanned 1973’s “Badlands,” 1978’s “Days of Heaven,” 1998’s “The Thin Red Line” and 2011’s “The Tree of Life.”
The most recent picture has now been released in a “director-approved special edition” by The Criterion Collection, showcasing a new cut of the Palme d’Or-winning and Oscar-nominated film, lensed by Emmanuel Lubezki and starring Brad Bitt and Jessica Chastain in a story that melds childhood memories with a meditation on the nature of the universe.
Malick worked for decades on the ambitious film, and Weber treasures his collaboration with the director on the project. The Criterion Collection cut includes an additional 50 minutes of footage, and although Weber was not directly involved on the project, he was able to contribute nonetheless. “Some of the passages I initially cut during production have found their way back in,...

Walter Hill directed Powers Boothe in just two films — “Extreme Prejudice” (1987) with Nick Nolte and “Southern Comfort” (1981) with Keith Carradine. However, the two were longtime friends, and Boothe’s death May 14 at the age of 68 hit Hill hard. He wrote this remembrance of the veteran actor for IndieWire.
The news of his passing, especially so soon after that of Bill Paxton, came very hard. My friendship with Powers covered many years, yet we somehow managed to do only two films. I wish it had been 20.
We worked in deserts, swamps, and on sound stages; in all circumstances, I came to admire his good humor, his courtly manners, his bemused reserve… I used to gently tease him as the ‘Hamlet of the Prairies’, and even though it was difficult to imagine anyone more American (a Texan; proud of it), there was something grand about the performances, as well as the man,...

Actor who revelled in playing charismatic villains and all-round bad guys
The actor Powers Boothe, who has died aged 68, was one of Hollywood’s greatest villains. His characters embraced their villainy with complete self-belief, relished their freedom from restraint, and disdained the boredom of creatures more tightly bound by morality. They were also entertaining and dangerously likable.
Boothe’s bad men often represented the darker side of the heroes to whom he played foil; his flamboyant Curly Bill Brocius is the antithesis of Kurt Russell’s tightly wrapped Wyatt Earp in Tombstone (1993) and, as if they were two sides of the same violent person, his white-suited drug lord even shares a woman with Nick Nolte as the vengeful Texas ranger who was his childhood friend, in Walter Hill’s over-the-top B movie Extreme Prejudice (1987).

As all lovers of crime, suspense thriller, war, western, horror and science fiction films know, creating a truly great cinematic villain is no easy task. When it happens, it’s virtually impossible to forget that character.
We’ll now take a look at the greatest film villains of the 1980’s.
The criteria for this article is the same as my previous article Cinema’s Greatest Villains: The 1970’s: the villains must be from live-action films-no animated features-and must pose some type of direct or indirect lethal threat. The villains can be either individuals or small groups that act as one unit.
The villains must be human or human in appearance, so no shape-shifting alien from John Carpenter’s amazing 1982 The Thing, no Aliens from James Cameron’s classic 1986 sequel and no Predator from John McTiernan’s beloved 1987 film of the same name.
Also, individuals that are the central protagonists/antiheroes...

Born in the Big Apple in january of 1951, Sheldon Lettich moved with his family to the West Coast at a young age. After finishing High School, he joined the Marine Corps, serving his country for four years, one of them as a Radio Operator in Vietnam.
Partially based upon his experiences in Southeast Asia, he co-authored Tracers, a play seen in the Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago and London stages, to great acclaim; It subsequently won the prestigious Drama Desk and L.A. Drama Critics Awards.

Never has Photoshopping a couple of red Xes been so tinged with sorrow.
Previously on The Amazing Race, teams continued in Moscow where they faced math problems, a dance challenge and a room full of Russian ruler impersonators. Jaymes & James secured their first win with Trey & Lexi right behind them. The twins held in 3rd and the inexplicably joined-at-the-hip Ryan & Abbie and Brent & Josh finished 4th and 5th, respectively. James & Abba were unable to locate or replace their missing travel documents and sadly, Team Headbang was Philiminated.
In tonight's Leg Racers flew from Moscow to Amsterdam where they faced the return of a past Roadblock as a “Switchback”. In the second Leg of The Amazing Race 21, ten teams flew from Shanghai to Indonesia where they witnessed some bullsh-...uh, bull racing, lured innocent children onto their adongadongs and chose between hauling ice and sorting fish. Twins Natalie & Nadiya served fishy realness at the market and claimed first place along with the Express Pass, which will allow them to skip a task later in the Race. Rob & Kelley were thoroughly unpleasant to everyone and so of course made it through to the next Leg. In the opening Leg of The Amazing Race 21, eleven teams of two flew to China to battle ping pong prodigies and force-feed frog fallopian tubes in their quest to be eligible to double the grand prize for winning the Race. Amy & Daniel foolishly tipped off Abbie & Ryan to the location of Mildred the albacock uccobus abacus lady and were sniped out of their shot at a double payday. Josh & Brent from Team Gay bickered but managed to luck into a seventh place finish and Jaymes, Team Gay's third member, barely survived, finishing in tenth with partner James. Philiminated were Rob & Sheila, gone before I made even a single Monty Python “He's a lumberjack and he's Ok” joke.

Describe this episode in one word (or two, or three, or four).
Steve: Ten seasons in, still the best (I realize that's six words).
Matt: Underwhelming, overhyped, yet solid.

NCIS, Season 10, Episode 1: “Extreme Prejudice”
Written by Gary Glasberg
Directed by Tony Wharmby
Airs Tuesdays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
A bomb blast has wreaked havoc on the U.S. Navy Yard.
The premiere opens right where the show left off last season. Doctor Mallard, who was last seen suffering from a heart attack on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, is alive. He and his assistant discuss the best way to aid their co-workers, of whom they have heard no news. After ten years, Brian Dietzen has earned his place in the opening credits in the role of assistant medical examiner Jimmy Palmer. The scenes between these two are bittersweet and simple, acting on behalf of the audience, asking the question that everyone wants to know the answer to- Who survived?

"What's a four-letter word for surviving a terrorist attack? Luck." - Gibbs
NCIS kicked off its 10th season with another strong installment, one that was basically the final chapter of a five-episode arc, beginning in April with the burning of a Baltimore warehouse in "Rekindled" and concluding with Gibbs and Dearing finally squaring off mano-a-mano.
As premieres go, it didn't quite live up to the hype, with the conclusion a bit anticlimactic and parts feeling somewhat disjointed. Nevertheless, it was enjoyable, and it's great to have the team back in one piece.
Unlike last season's opener, which picked up the action months after the previous finale and saw Tony piece together the puzzle through a series of flashbacks, tonight began mere seconds after "Til Death Do Us Part" and the blast that rocked NCIS' headquarters, leaving its agents in peril.
With debris still in the air, Gibbs was ordered...

Real-world events over the summer -- namely, the positive resolution of contract talks for several "NCIS" regulars -- may have taken a little bit of the suspense out of the show's season-ending cliffhanger. But "Extreme Prejudice" still managed to deliver.
In following the Harper Dearing case to its conclusion, the show took a couple of its characters to legitimately dark places, ones that could ripple later down the line. It also managed to work in some lighter moments (Tony and Ziva trapped in an elevator = sweaty, smelly comedy) and made for a pretty satisfying hour of TV, even if we already knew everyone would survive the bombing.
Harper Dearing is maybe the unlikeliest-looking domestic terrorist ever, and "NCIS" did a very smart thing casting Richard Schiff to play him over several episodes. Schiff usually plays decent (if flawed) men in his roles, but watching him go against type here, while...

"NCIS" ended its ninth season in literally explosive fashion, with vengeful financier-turned-terrorist Harper Dearing planting a bomb at NCIS headquarters and putting the entire team in jeopardy.
When Season 10 opens Tuesday (Sept. 25), fans will see the immediate aftermath of the bombing and the renewed hunt for Dearing (guest star Richard Schiff), who's not done with his campaign. Here's of what you can expect in the premiere, titled "Extreme Prejudice."
The investigation isn't easy -- or quick. The bomb doesn't destroy the building, but it inflicts some pretty heavy damage -- leaving Gibbs (Mark Harmon) and Co. a few steps behind. The episode covers several months of time, from the date of the bombing up to Tuesday, putting the show in sync with the calendar.
Ducky's fate revealed. Ducky (David McCallum) wasn't in the building when the bomb went off, but upon hearing the news he suffered a heart attack. While...

The first clip of the NCIS Season 10 premiere has been released, and the action picks up moments after the explosion orchestrated by Dearing rocked the agency's headquarters at the tail end of last season.
Emerging generally unscathed, Gibbs sees that Abby is as well. The look on his face says it all.
Before he can go find the rest of the team, however, Vance and Navy Secretary Jarvis are already planning their big counterattack. No one does this to the United States Navy. The manhunt is officially on.
The episode airs Tuesday night. Watch the opening minute and a half of "Extreme Prejudice" below:

The NCIS Season 10 premiere doesn't air on CBS for another two weeks (9/25), but TV Fanatic was fortunate to get its virtual hands on it already, and we can assure you it will be worth the wait.
It's difficult for any season premiere to live up to a summer's worth of hype, especially following a cliffhanger of this magnitude, but by and large, "Extreme Prejudice" comes pretty close.
Note: Minor spoilers ahead! While we don't reveal plot points or details that we think would take away from anyone's enjoyment of the episode, you still might want to turn back now.
Without giving away too much, here are 10 things to expect in the premiere ...
1. The title refers to a euphemism for execution. Playing on the "termination with prejudice" clause used in employment contracts, in military parlance it is understood as an order to assassinate; this is exactly how the President orders the...

The season premiere of NCIS is less than one month away, and we have the first footage from "Extreme Prejudice" here, courtesy of a teaser that aired Thursday on Entertainment Tonight.
In the aftermath of the bombing, the emotionally and physically distraught team must pick up the pieces and hunt for the elusive suspect, Harper Dearing. It's clear that this is no ordinary case.
The whole team is back for the new season, but as Abby says, it's time to bring good back. From the looks of this first teaser, it looks like they will - and Dearing gets what's coming to him.

When NCIS returns for its 10th season, the team will have its hands full picking up the pieces, literally and otherwise. The main characters' lives may have been spared, but the impact will be wide-ranging.
How bad will it be? According to myriad psychological issues, the building is in ruins.

Executive producer Gary Glasberg says the opener will be an intense, edge-of-your-seat installment: “It literally picks up two hours after the explosion, and it’s an action-packed episode of television."

Mention the name Walter Hill to a film freak of a certain age and you'll almost certainly be regaled with wild-eyed tales of manly, sweaty, frequently insane action flicks. The man hasn't done a feature since 2002's Undisputed, but he did direct some sections of great TV westerns like Broken Trail and Deadwood. So anyway, here's a very brief history lesson on Walter Hill: he wrote, directed, and/or produced films like The Getaway, Hard Times, The Driver, Alien, The Warriors, Southern Comfort, 48 Hours, Brewster's Millions, Streets of Fire, Extreme Prejudice, Red Heat, Aliens, Johnny Handsome, Trespass, Geronimo, Wild Bill, and Last Man Standing. That's a lot of testosterone. So here's the good news: Variety reports that Mr. Hill's Bullet to...

A man who works with his hands is a laborer;
a man who works with his hands and his brain is a craftsman;
but a man who works with his hands and his brain and his heart is an artist.
Louis Nizer
In his indispensable film study text, Understanding Movies, Louis Gianetti held forth on what separated craftsmanlike directors from those who rise above the norm:
“…what differentiates a great director from one who is merely competent is not so much a matter of what happens, but how things happen…”
In other words, Gianetti continued, the difference was in how effectively the director used form – visual style, composition, editing, mise en scene, and the rest of the directorial toolbox – to “…embody (a film’s) content.”
But with the rise of big budget blockbusters in the 70s and 80s, there came the ascendancy of a breed of director for whom content mattered less than form.

Screen Media will release the urban comedy movie The Hustle on DVD on July 5 for the list price of $24.98.
Charlie Murphy (l.) and Al Shearer sneak a peak in The Hustle.
Here’s the film’s story: Falling upon a large sum of mob money which they then proceed to lose, Freddie Manning (Al Shearer, Glory Road) and his cynical best friend, Junior (Charlie Murphy, TV’s Chappelle’s Show) find themselves owing $10,000 to an Asian crime boss and his spicy daughter (Bai Ling, Love Ranch)–which they have to repay in seven days!
Lots of familiar faces pop up in this one, including David Alan Grier (Little Man), Tony Cox (Bad Santa), Tiny Lister (Extreme Prejudice), Tamala Jones (TV’s Castle) and even Brigitte Nielsen (Beverly Hills Cop II)!!
Directed by Deon Taylor and Diana Erwin, this 2008 R-rated production looks like it could offer serve up some silly fun...

Jason Patric is a suave villain in this murky tale of a CIA secret mission
This is A-Team territory, the story of a special forces unit working for the CIA on top secret missions, betrayed by someone within the organisation and coming back from the grave to seek revenge. The scene hops around Latin America, the Middle East and the States, Jason Patric is the suave, one-armed villain, double-crossing is frequent as is macho moralising. The action sequences are well enough mounted, but it was all done far better in Walter Hill's Extreme Prejudice.

For my money, one of the best directors during the the late 70’s through the 80’s was Walter Hill. A tough director who made some of the leanest, meanest, toughest action thrillers during that period such as, The Driver, 48 Hours (and the sequel Another 48 Hours), the truly off-the-wall Extreme Prejudice, The Warriors, Hard Times, the western The Long Riders and several others. His output slowed down after a couple of big flops and Hollywood started ignoring macho action films for comic book superheroes. Since then Hill basically worked on cable TV series like the HBO western Deadwood and the western mini series The Broken Trail – still the highest rated cable movie ever. Now Hill is about to return to the big screen, after an 8 year absence, since his overlooked terrific prison boxing movie Undisputed with Wesley Snipes and Ving Rhames, with the thriller, St. Vincent, which was announced last week,...
