Directors Albert Band and Charles Band had originally conceived this film as an adaptation of the Marvel Comics character Doctor Strange, for which they had obtained the license from Marvel Entertainment. However, the pre-production phase took so long that by the time filming started, they lost the rights to the name. Instead of scrapping the film altogether, the script was rewritten into an R-rated standalone film.
Elements of this movie were actually re-used from an unfilmed project from Full Moon CEO's Charles Band previous studio Empire called "Doctor Mortalis."
A sequel was planned but never fully materialized.
