Warning! Spoilers ahead for the Frasier reboot season 1 finale.
Nicholas Lyndhurst's Alan Cornwall steals the show in the Frasier reboot season 1 as Frasier's new companion. Alan's friendship with Frasier brings a fresh dynamic to the revival, unlike anything seen in Cheers or the original series. The Frasier reboot should give Alan a bigger role in season 2 to fully capitalize on his chemistry with Frasier and his potential as a character.
The Frasier reboot season 1 had some great elements, but Nicholas Lyndhurst's Alan Cornwall was the best, and it failed to take full advantage of that. Ideally, Frasier's small screen comeback would have also seen his younger brother, Niles, on the heels of Martin's passing. Unfortunately, David Hyde Pierce turned down the opportunity to return, as revealed by revival star and producer, Kelsey Grammer. This left the Paramount+ project without Frasier's constant side-kick, prompting them to bring in Lyndhurst,...

From “Cheers” to “Frasier,” Kelsey Grammer’s Frasier Crane was a mainstay of comedy TV for 20 years, from the ’80s to the early-aughts. Now, after an equal amount of time off the air, Grammer is back in the role for Paramount+’s “Frasier.”
The streaming series is a revival-meets-reboot that once again spins off Grammer’s character with a new cast of colorful characters. Some original “Frasier” stars will return to guest star. However, David Hyde Pierce won’t return as Niles and John Mahoney, who played their father Martin, passed away in 2018.
That means Frasier – along with “Frasier” fans – will be surrounded by new faces. With that in mind, here’s a handy guide to the new “Frasier” cast and characters, including where you might have the actors before.

Bonnie Langford is returning to Doctor Who, reprising her role of legendary companion Melanie Bush.
We first met Mel in 1986, going on time-travelling adventures first with the sixth Doctor, Colin Baker, and then his successor Sylvester McCoy in 1987. During six stories spanning 20 episodes, she encountered villains and monsters aplenty, including the plant-based slave race the Vervoids, genocidal humanoids called the Bannermen, and the infamous renegade Time Lady The Rani.
Now Bonnie Langford is bringing Mel back for an epic adventure with the fifteenth Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa:

The Frasier revival has added another familiar face to the cast.
Deadline reports that Peri Gilpin is joining the impressive guest cast of the Paramount+ sequel.
Gilpin played Roz during the original series.
As of this time of writing, Roz is set to return for one episode of the series.
News of the big return comes almost two months after it was revealed that Bebe Neuwirth would reprise her Lilith role from the original series.
Ever since the show was announced, there has been a great deal of excitement about which former cast members would show up.
Unfortunately for fans, Kelsey Grammer is the only confirmed returning series regular.
Grammer previously revealed that his on-screen brother David Hyde Pierce "basically decided he wasn't really interested in repeating the performance of Niles."
Grammer believes the decision has helped the storyline of the follow-up.

Kelsey Grammer will not be the only returning star for the Frasier revival.
Paramount+ announced Wednesday that Bebe Neuwirth would reprise her role in the upcoming revival series.
The actress will appear in one episode as Lilith, featuring Freddy's (Jack Cutmore-Scott) birthday party.
"When they reunite, Lilith, in classic form, is far from pleased about having to share Freddy (Jack Cutmore-Scott) now that Frasier is back living in Boston," reads the episode's description.
"What begins as a fun party with friends and family inevitably becomes a Lilith and Frasier showdown for the ages."
The Frasier revival nabbed a formal pickup in 2022, but the lack of original stars aside from Grammer was a cause for concern.
The actor revealed that David Hyde Pierce decided against revisiting his Niles Crane character.

A surprising casting choice raises hopes for the upcoming Frasier reboot starring Kelsey Grammer. Remakes, reboots and revivals have existed for a long time, but the 2010s and the 2020s are incredibly crowded with them, and with good reason. Famous TV shows such as That '70s Show, The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air, and Roseanne come from the golden age of serialized television comedies. More than two decades is enough time to spark a sense of nostalgia in new and old fans alike.
While remakes can experiment with new actors, most reboots and revivals need the original actors to make sense. For instance, Fuller House, being a revival of an ensemble show, can get around Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen's absence by focusing on the rest of the cast, introducing new characters, and skirting around Michelle's whereabouts, but a show that's centered around its titular character, like Frasier, has no choice...

Kelsey Grammer explains how the Frasier reboot's new character offers something fresh after the casting of Nicholas Lyndhurst. The Paramount+ project will unfortunately not feature the Cheers spinoff's original ensemble as mainstays, although some of them may appear through cameos. Given this, the Frasier reboot is gradually building a fresh cast of characters that will regularly interact with the snooty psychiatrist. Having a lot of television and sitcom experience, starring in British shows such as Only Fools and Horses, Goodnight Sweetheart, and Going Straight, Butterflies among others, Lyndhurst is the first actor to join the revival.
Long before it was picked up Paramount+, Grammer was already working on getting the Frasier sequel off the ground for years. It encountered a couple of snags along the way, but everything appears to be moving along smoothly now. After years of speculation and exploratory meetings, a sequel series to the acclaimed sitcom "Frasier" is finally in the works. The project, starring Kelsey Grammer in a reprisal of his Emmy-winning role, was officially given the green light by Paramount+ in fall 2022. At that time, it was revealed that Chris Harris of "How I Met Your Mother" and Joe Cristalli of "Life In Pieces" would be writing and executive producing the show, but there were no concrete details about the plot or the characters. Now, as production begins to ramp up, we finally know the first two cast members joining the esteemed psychiatrist on his new adventure.
According to Variety, Jack Cutmore-Scott will play Frederick Gaylord Crane, the son of Bebe Neuwirth's Dr. Lilith Sternin and Dr. Frasier Crane. Previously played by Christopher and Kevin Graves (and Rob Neukirch in a future sequence) on "Cheers," then Luke Tarsitano and Trevor Einhorn on "Frasier,...

The Frasier reboot adds its first cast member to star opposite Kelsey Grammer. After years of the Frasier star spearheading a revival series, the reboot was finally confirmed at Paramount+, with Grammer returning in the lead role. This exciting announcement also came with the disappointing caveat that no other original Frasier cast members would be returning as series regulars, including those who were instrumental to the original show's success, such as David Hyde Pierce, Jane Leeves, and Peri Gilpin. This meant the Frasier reboot would have to start from scratch and assemble an entirely new supporting cast around Grammer.
Now, the Fraiser sequel series has found its first cast member to go along with Kelsey Grammer. According to Variety, the Paramount+ reboot has cast Nicholas Lyndhurst opposite the series lead. The “Frasier” sequel series at Paramount+ has cast Nicholas Lyndhurst opposite series lead Kelsey Grammer, Variety has learned exclusively.
Lyndhurst is now the first cast member announced to join the new iteration of the beloved sitcom. The role marks a reunion for Grammer and Lyndhurst, who previously starred together in “Man of La Mancha” for the English National Opera at the London Coliseum.

Recurring guest star Steve Guttenberg will recreate an iconic moment from Three Men and a Baby in an upcoming episode of The Goldbergs season 10. Based on Adam F. The Goldbergs is staying true to its throwback format with the inclusion of upcoming guest star Steve Guttenberg, who is bringing a touch of Three Men and a Baby to the ABC comedy. If nothing else, Danny Boyle’s latest film “Yesterday” has one hell of an interesting premise: a regular guy with a middling music career (the very charming Himesh Patel) gets hit by a bus during a curious worldwide blackout, only to wake up from a brief coma to realize he’s the only person who remembers the songs of the Beatles. Soon enough, he’s sweeping the world with his special, and, to the world, novel, jams like “Yesterday” and “Hey Jude” and “I Saw Her Standing There,” among others.
Written by rom-com king Richard Curtis from a story by Jack Barth, the high-concept feature is beholden to its big idea, but it seems as if even the film’s best idea isn’t a particularly original one. In recent weeks, at least two authors have come out with their own, earlier projects that are built on similar premises, and...

Will ‘Yesterday’ bring Richard Curtis his 2nd screenwriting Oscar nomination 25 years after his 1st?
This year marks the 25th anniversary of Richard Curtis’ lone Oscar nomination. The recipient was his original screenplay for 1994’s “Four Weddings and a Funeral, ” which also was a Best Picture candidate. Could it be time for him to get another chance with his latest opus, “Yesterday”?
The script for the film directed by Danny Boyle that opens nationwide on June 28 imagines a world where the Beatles never existed , a phenomenon caused by a worldwide blackout. The only person who seems to remember them is a struggling musician named Jack (Himesh Patel), who was knocked unconscious after being hit by a bus while riding his bike. A hopeless songwriter wakes up to find he’s the only person who can remember the Fab Four’s hits in a wacky, winning comedy directed by Danny Boyle
Imagine no Beatles, it’s not easy even if you try. No Yesterday, no Blackbird, no Sgt Pepper ... and then … no Imagine, no all-time best Bond theme (Live and Let Die), no all-time best comedy band name (Ringo Deathstarr), no Concert for Bangladesh to inspire Live Aid, no Withnail & I, no Life of Brian – but then again, no Charles Manson. In a Beatle-less universe, Mike McGear could be Bono’s producer and best mate and Jeff Lynne is president of the world. Screenwriter Richard Curtis’s goofy, wacky, exasperatingly enjoyable fantasy-comedy riffs on ideas like these with a story co-written with Jack Barth – although it turns out TV’s Goodnight Sweetheart got to the idea first. It is directed with dash and gusto by Danny Boyle.

Remember Kinvig, Clone, Not With A Bang? These are the UK sci-fi sitcoms you’re unlikely to see on comedy best-of lists…
With E4 sci-fi comedy commissions, Tripped and Aliens, and in-development Channel 4 projects, Space Ark and Graham Linehan/Adam Buxton collaboration The Cloud, in the works, a new crop of sci-fi sitcom could be making its way to UK TV.
Making funny sci-fi on a small-screen budget is tough enough without the additional pressure of having to attract viewers more traditionally down-to-earth in their sitcom tastes. Sci-fi sets and effects can be seen as prohibitively expensive by comedy commissioners (which is perhaps why the best UK sci-fi sitcoms of recent years has been on BBC Radio), and the genre’s niche status doesn’t scream mainstream hit. Over the years, one or two stand-outs have managed to straddle the sci-fi and comedy TV worlds, but plenty more have stumbled in the attempt.

I feel sorry for you, you zeros, you nobodies. What's going to live on after you die? Nothing, that's what!
This house will become a shrine! And punks and skins and Rastas will all gather round and all hold their hands in sorrow for their fallen leader! And all the grown-ups will say, 'But why are the kids crying?' And the kids will say, 'Haven't you heard? Rick is dead! The People's Poet is dead!'
And then one particularly sensitive and articulate teenager will say, 'Why kids, do you understand nothing? How can Rick be dead when we still have his poems?'.

Trailer Louisa Mellor 13 Jan 2014 - 06:21
Starz is bringing the Outlander novels to television this year. Here's the first trailer...
The weekend that saw the Us debut of Ron D. Moore's new Syfy series, Helix, also gave us the trailer for another Moore-produced project, Outlander.
Adapted from the novels of Diana Gabaldon, Outlander is being billed as romance, sci-fi, historical drama, adventure and epic all in one. It concerns 1940s nurse Claire Randall who, as this trailer informs us, has "fallen through time", back to eighteenth century Scotland. In 1743, Claire becomes entangled with a Scottish warrior and a love triangle separated by the centuries ensues (think Goodnight Sweetheart but with more kilts. Actually, no, best you don't).
Outlander is due to start this summer in the Us on Starz.

Television and stage producer known for Auf Wiedersehen, Pet and Birds of a Feather
The television producer Allan McKeown, who has died aged 67 of prostate cancer, created the groundbreaking Witzend Productions with the sitcom writers Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais and had hits on both sides of the Atlantic. It was one of the earliest independent production companies outside the British broadcasting establishment to find success within it.
A prime example of Witzend's attempts to push the boundaries of the medium – and McKeown's credit as executive producer – was Auf Wiedersehen, Pet (1983-86). The series, about a group of itinerant British builders in Germany – developed by Clement and La Frenais from an idea by Franc Roddam – went beyond the sitcom format to become one of the first in the comedy-drama genre.
ITV at first had no plans to make a second series but backtracked when up to 13 million viewers tuned in.

Cleese and crew in 'secret talks', with a press conference imminent. Plus: is legendary comic Andy Kaufman really dead?
• Monty Python: five favourite sketches – video
This week's comedy news
The stars of Monty Python have announced a press conference this Thursday amid rumours of a reunion. They last worked as a team back in 1983, on the film The Meaning of Life. The Sun reports that the five surviving Pythons (John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones, Eric Idle and Michael Palin) have spent months in "secret talks". Previous rumoured projects have come to nothing, with Idle once joking: "We would only do a reunion if [Graham] Chapman came back from the dead. So we're negotiating with his agent." The press conference is scheduled for midday 21 November at London's Playhouse Theatre. Meanwhile, as the British Comedy Guide report, ex-Pythons Palin and Jones have been filming new material together for the DVD release of...

With Being Human gone, Misfits bowing out, and a year to wait for Doctor Who series 8, Rob helps us navigate the UK geek TV drought...
Shift your brain gears into fifth for a moment - 'no that's reverse, no, just, okay, yes, up and to the right...right, Right! Oh here let me...' - and imagine that all the British-made sci-fi/fantasy shows from the past eight years are water. Lovely refreshing water. You've drunk it, haven't you? All that liquid geeky goodness that's been splooshing through your telly pipes and quenching your thirst for enjoyable quality cult TV. 'Slurp slurp slurp'. Delicious.
Sometime's the water's cool, like a bow tie or a super power, and sometime's the water's hot, like the torso of a vampire in Barry Island or a distinctly Abercrombie & Fitch knight of King Arthur's catalogue. All that fantastic hot and cold water,...

Revisiting 18 years of pop culture, from the Strokes to the early hipster, plus lots of Charlie Brooker

Dr Zhivago
By Kieran Kinsella
British TV specialists Acorn Media have decided to capitalize on the wintery weather by releasing the critically acclaimed 2003 version of Boris Pasternak’s snow swept epic Dr Zhivago. This 2 disc set is for mature audiences only and includes the unedited UK version of the 225 minute revolutionary drama. Additionally, the box set includes 70 minutes of behind-the-scenes footage including cast interviews, and you also get a mini-biography of Pasternak.
As an avid fan of the 1965 film version of this same book, I was a little bit skeptical when I first heard about the small screen version. However, my fears were without foundation as this ITV production is just as enthralling as David Lean’s version and many people would argue that it is also closer to Pasternak’s book. That being said, BBC veteran writer Andrew Davies does a very good job of converting the wordy dialogue...

Anna Kendrick in Pitch Perfect
This weekend Pitch Perfect, a movie about a scrappy competitive singing troupe, hits screens in an explosion of mind-blowing 8-part harmony. Think Bring It On with jazz hands instead of spirit fingers. And no Eliza Dushku. (And no Jesse Bradford. And no “cheer sex”. I could go on.)
I have a love/hate relationship with a cappella. On the one hand, I genuinely respect the vocal skill it takes to sing as a tight group without any outside guidance. The pitch, the rhythm, tone, everything - it's incredibly difficult to do well, and it's an amazing way to showcase a true mastery of the vocal instrument.
It's also usually cornier than a johnny cake. The massacring of popular music, the cringe-inducing near-choreography ... all this combined with a healthy dose of earnest enthusiasm is usually enough to make many of us look the other way whenever...

A few months back, I found out the wonderful news that I am going to be a father. Over recent weeks I have found that my curiosity to re-visit pregnancy based films has grown. It has become very apparent to me that this is a topic rife for discovery, but generally falls into the same sort of brackets – fear of what will come. After watching and hearing my wife go through endless weeks of morning / all day sickness, I can understand why most film-makers pick up on the scary side of the gestation period. But there are also so many wonderful parts of the process. After paying a bit of attention, and seeing mine and my wife’s own experiences reflected on celluloid, I have noticed that despite their similarities, there are some clear divides within the overall ‘experiences’ of the Hollywood birthing process.
Below is a collection of films which all revolve around pregnancy.

The top 10 acts on The Sing-Off took to the stage this week, with a double elimination looming over every single note. Who made what grade? Find out now...
Round One
YellowJackets - "Wannabe" - After a shoddy Frankie Valli performance, the group had to add some more levels to its arrangements. The members wanted to sing and dance, which meant that one of the two would suffer. The arrangement was better than I expected and I liked that they let the choreography be openly gay. I enjoyed the comedic break near the end and the multiple part ending. My Grade: B+
Delilah - "Flashdance... What a Feeling" - After struggling with their 60s performance, the girls wanted to fight harder to gain momentum. They decided to place Candice in front for her more husky voice. The opening lead vocals were a bit too whispery for my taste, but when the tempo changed it got better.

As a Brit watching Woody Allen’s latest European muse, the first thing that springs to mind is Only Fools’ Nicholas Lyndhurst’s time-travelling sitcom Goodnight Sweetheart about an accidental time traveller who discovers a time portal, allowing him to travel between the London of the 1990s and the same area during the Second World War. Time travel captures the imagination and has fascinated audiences, from Back To The Future to Quantum Leap. For this reason alone, Allen’s new romantic comedy has an instant awe – and not just as a result of the setting being the upmarket parts and cultural haunts of gay Paris.
An American family travel to Paris on business, but the engaged couple of the party, Gil (Owen Wilson) and Inez (Rachel McAdams), find the culture and lifestyle starting to interfere with real life, and they are forced to confront the illusion that a life different from their own is better.

The Silence of the Lambs director is taking on King's forthcoming novel about a man who goes back in time to save JFK. But will it just be Back to the Future with politics?
One day somebody will tell a time-travelling story in which tinkering with the past turns out to be a great idea and doesn't result in horrifying knock-on effects such as people's heads disappearing in photographs or monkeys taking over the world. That day is probably not this day. Science fiction of this ilk rarely tends to break new ground, and Jonathan Demme's latest project, based on a forthcoming Stephen King novel, sounds like a predictable melange of Back to the Future, Quantum Leap and BBC sitcom Goodnight Sweetheart.
That's not to say the premise doesn't sound intriguing, despite its familiarity. 11/22/63 will focus on a 35-year-old high school English teacher from modern day Maine who discovers...

Midnight in Paris, which debuted on the Croisette at the 11am press screening opening of the Cannes Film Festival is a surprisingly delightful excursion into a cultured man’s fantasies… perhaps and probably Woody Allen’s own nostalgic wish to have been born in a different time and place.
Warning – The marketing team behind Midnight in Paris have done a terrific job of keeping the neat concept of the movie under-wraps and hidden by sleight of hand misdirection, so although there are no real spoilers ahead, I know I certainly enjoyed the movie more for not knowing what it actually was going in.
Full review follows…
It’s an interesting riff of the concept, oddly enough, of Nicolas Lyndhurst’s Goodnight Sweetheart British sitcom, but this time with our lead falling in love with a girl from the 1920′s who actually knew the likes of Ernest Hemingway,...

Johnson Beharry may be the bookies favourite to leave Dancing On Ice tonight, but that didn’t stop him from trying his best during prop week.
For tonight’s live show, the Iraq war hero had to skate with a hat and an umbrella and speaking on This Morning on Friday, former winner Hayley Tamaddon admitted that a brolly is probably the toughest item to incorporate into a routine, as it is so unpredictable when thrown.
Skating to ‘Goodnight Sweetheart’ by The Overtones, Johnson and Jodeyne took on a much slower paced number and we were a bit bored by half way through.
What content it had was great, but compared to Sam Attwater’s bag of tricks, it was all very slow and basic. In fairness to Johnson though, at least he didn’t drop any props….
Score: 19.5

It only takes one great career high to earn a spot as a Digital Spy Icon. Factors such as longevity don't come into it. Hence the inclusion of this week's entry - Christopher Ettridge. While his career on the box and in theatres has spread across a number of years, his fame only burned brightly during the six-year period of 1993 to 1999. During that time, Ettridge was a regular fixture in the nation's living rooms bringing hundreds of punchlines and boat-loads of comedy gold as bumbling East End bobby Reg Deadman in BBC sitcom Goodnight Sweetheart. As with much of the Beeb's sitcom output in the (more)...

When Simon Pegg started out he had no plans to become a movie star. In fact he had no plans at all. So just how did the geek from Gloucester catch the eye of the world's best filmmakers? It's all down to "quantum attraction"
Piers Morgan used to say of the actor Nicholas Lyndhurst that he may have been incredibly famous – this was back when Lyndhurst was an on-screen ubiquity as Rodney Trotter, as a time-traveller in Goodnight Sweetheart and an occasional cross-dresser in adverts for Smiths – but how much did anybody know about his private life?
There were no nightclub ejections or illicit affairs, to anyone's knowledge, really no Lyndhurst-based muck at all, and Morgan's point was that privacy could be pretty well maintained by the famous if the famous really wanted it. It is tempting to wonder if we have a present-day equivalent – whether such a thing is...

It may come as a surprise to learn that while Patti LuPone was notching her humongous success as Eva Peron in Broadway's Evita, she was lonely. "It was a difficult role to sing," she says from her Gypsy dressing room, "so I would sing and then shut up. There was no social life at all." And that, in a nutshell, is why she agreed to do her now-legendary 27-week, Saturdays-only nightclub stint at Manhattan's Les Mouches, a recording of which Ghostlight Records has just released on CD as, appropriately enough, Patti LuPone at Les Mouches. It's already getting the kind of chart attention the acclaimed singer-actor has never received theretofore.Racing around her space backstage at the St. James Theatre, LuPone reports that in 1980, when she was booked for four weeks but kept getting extended, neither she nor anyone else thought about a live recording. Nonetheless, most — if not all — of the evenings were recorded.
