Under Ninja , an upcoming live-action film based on the seinen manga by Kengo Hanazawa, has published a new trailer (below) featuring the official theme song for the film, entitled “doppelganger”, which is performed by Creepy Nuts. The film hits theaters in Japan on January 24, 2025. It’s busy and Twister-y at the box office this weekend, but a few indies are hoping to catch a breeze with very well-reviewed Oddity looking to expand the market for high-end horror and Widow Clicquot to attract fans of good period films and bubbly.

Oddity from IFC Films, is a supernatural home-invasion horror from writer-director Damian McCarthy (Caveat). It opens on 790 screens, the widest new indie release this week. Carolyn Bracken stars as Dani, who is restoring an old castle in rural Cork County, Ireland, with her husband Ted (Gwilym Lee), a doctor at a facility for the criminally insane. When Dani is brutally murdered, her blind occultist twin sister Darcy (also Bracken) goes after those responsible using inherited haunted items as her tools of revenge. Music Box Films and Doppelgänger Releasing have acquired the pic, which stars Benedict Wall, Florence Noble, and Jonny Brugh.

From writer-director Michael Duignan, the quirky saga follows Dutch, an angry former tennis coach whose life has fallen apart since he was the victim of a hit-and-run a year ago. In a bid to find the driver and take revenge, Dutch embarks on a strange psychic training course designed to unlock his latent mind powers.

“The Paragon is a tale of revenge, redemption and the confounding ways that each of our destinies is tangled up with strangers,” said Duignan. “We were a small team making a story about big ideas, powered by the sheer love and madness of making independent movies.”

Exclusive: Doppelgänger Releasing, the genre-focused label of Music Box Films, has acquired U.S. distribution rights to Crumb Catcher, the debut feature from Chris Skotchdopole.

Crumb Catcher debuted at Fantastic Fest, before going on to play Woodstock Film Festival and Brooklyn Horror Film Festival, where it won the Jury Prize for Best Ensemble and the Gold Audience Award.

The film was written and directed by Skotchdople and was produced by indie vet Larry Fessenden, alongside Brian Devine, Chadd Harbold, Bonnie Timmermann, and James W. Skotchdopole. Doppelgänger Releasing will open Crumb Catcher in theaters later this year, with a home entertainment release to follow.

Agnieszka Holland’s refugee drama The Green Border has taken the top prize for best film at the Polish Film Awards. The black-and-white feature, which looks at the inhumane treatment of refugees trying to cross the natural border between Belarus and Poland, premiered to critical acclaim at the Venice Film Festival last year but came under attack from Poland’s far-right government, which called the movie “Nazi propaganda” for its supposedly negative depiction of Polish police and border guards. The political attacks are thought to have influenced the Polish Oscar committee’s decision not to put Green Border forward as Poland’s best international film contender this year, instead selecting Dk and Hugh Welchman’s Hugh animated literary adaptation The Peasants (which did not get nominated).

The film is an absolute blast and ended up being a hit in Norway, leading first-time feature filmmakers Juuso Laatio and Jukka Vidgren back behind the camera for a sequel, titled Heavier Trip!

Warwick Thornton was awarded the Golden Frog at Poland’s Camerimage International Film Festival on Saturday (November 18) for drama The New Boy.

Cinematographer and director Warwick Thornton scored top honors Saturday at the Camerimage cinematography film festival for his magical tale of an aboriginal youth, “The New Boy,” which film jurors called a distinctive “portrait of an extinguished spirituality.”

Thornton, in accepting the Golden Frog, said he had been so moved by the cinematography work onscreen at the fest, a top global event for directors of photography, he’d been “tearing for a week.”

This year’s winners at Camerimage Film Festival in Toruń, Poland were unveiled Saturday, with The New Boy, Warwick Thornton’s drama about an indigenous boy taken in at a mysterious remote monastery, taking the top prize.

Poor Things, Searchlight’s Yorgos Lanthimos drama starring Emma Stone, won the Audience Award at the festival, which focuses on the art of cinematography.

Camerimage’s Golden Frog is widely considered an Oscar precursor, with three of the past five Golden Frog winners going on to earn Oscar nominations in cinematography. Those titles include Lion (2016), Joker (2019) and Nomadland (2020).

The New Boy — the story of a young Aboriginal Australian orphan boy that was written, directed and lensed by Warwick Thornton — collected the Golden Frog in the main competition of the 31st EnergaCamerimage international cinematography film festival, which closed Saturday night in Torún, Poland.

Cinematographer Ed Lachman received the Silver Frog for Pablo Larraín’s El Conde, which positions Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet as a vampire. Robbie Ryan’s lensing of Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things, the story of a young woman (Emma Stone) brought back to life by an unorthodox scientist, claimed the Bronze Frog as well as the Audience Award. Brainstorm Media and Music Box Films have jointly picked up the North American rights to Paris Zarcilla’s horror movie Raging Grace.

A Dec. 8 theatrical release is being planned for the debut feature from British-born Filipino writer-director Zarcilla that bowed at South by Southwest, where it won two grand jury awards for best film and best debut.

Raging Grace follows an undocumented Filipino immigrant and single mom who works as the caretaker for a haunted British estate. As the mother and her daughter care for a terminally ill elderly man, they get entangled in a chilling secret.

As a horror flick, Raging Grace also explores themes of race, power, identity and the haunting consequences of hidden truths.

George Maharis, star of the 1960s CBS drama series “Route 66,” died this past May 24 at the age of 94, his friend Marc Bahan announced in a Facebook post.

No cause of death has been announced.

A graduate of the Actors Studio in New York, Maharis got his start in acting in off-Broadway productions before getting his first television role in 1958. Among the shows he would appear in over the next two years include “Exodus” and “Naked City,” the latter of which led Maharis to get the nod from series creator Stirling Silliphant on his next show, “Route 66.”

George Maharis, the Route 66 actor that left the series during the height of its popularity, died on Wednesday, May 24. He was 94.

“George is well known for his stardom in Route 66, stage productions, singing, artist, and above all a great guy would do anything for anyone. My dear friend, you’ll be terribly missed,” Maharis’ friend Marc Bahan shared in a Facebook post.

Maharis was born on September 1, 1928, in Astoria, New York. He studied at the Actors Studio and got his start working in off-Broadway productions.

His first television role came in 1958 with The Mugger. Maharis would go on to land other TV credits in shows like Naked City, Exodus and Search for Tomorrow. It would be until 1960 that he would land the role of Buz Murdock on Route 66, an indirect spinoff of Naked City that shared its same creator Stirling Silliphant. The Polish film industry is embracing variety and high-profile international collaborations, with a slew of new co-productions already generating buzz among buyers and festival programmers. “More and more established filmmakers, who used to look for collaborators in Romania or Hungary, are now coming to Poland — mostly because we are backed by concrete institutions and because there is money,” says producer Klaudia Śmieja-Rostworowska of Madants, heading to Berlinale’s European Film Market with “Ultima Thule” and Goran Stolevski’s “Housekeeping for Beginners.”

Drew Barrymore, the original Firestarter from the 1984 film of that name is burning mad over the Razzie nomination (now withdrawn) of the new Firestarter, 12-year-old Ryan Kiera Armstrong.

Speaking out on both her own program, The Drew Barrymore Show, as well as CBS Mornings, Barrymore said her “blood boiled” after learning that the young actress was nominated for a worst actress Razzie Award. On CBS Mornings she called the Razzie nomination of a child “bullying.”

Some people love a slow burn — but for singer-songwriter Joshua Bassett, the pain of waiting for a resolution that might never come is too much to bear, as evidenced by his new single, “Smoke Slow.” The vulnerable, piano-backed song finds the High School Musical actor pining for quality time with a love interest he knows he won’t ever be able to call his owm.

“All that we are is all that we’ll ever be, ‘cause he’s the one waiting at home,” Bassett sings on the song’s chorus.

It’s been a while since we last saw Dan Darin-Zanco’s Doppelganger pop up in Amazon’s relentlessly brutal comic book smash hit series, The Boys, but he was back in Season 2’s fourth episode, ‘Nothing Like It In the World’ and hoo boy, there was a lot to unpack about his reemergence by the time the credits rolled.

We last saw Doppelganger in the Season 1 episode ‘Cherry’ where we were just starting to get a handle on how Vought International was manipulating political figures for its own gain. Night Train Media (Ntm), the production outfit and finance firm set up by former Tele München Group founder Herbert L. Kloiber, has received a long-term investment from private equity fund Serafin Group. The business has also appointed Olivia Pahl as head of content development and co-production.

Pahl will oversee the slate of global film, premium network television and streaming projects at Ntm, the Munich-based company founded in February 2020 by Kloiber. Previously, at Studiocanal TV and Tandem Productions, Pahl rose to head of development after joining the company in 2015 from Germany’s ProSiebenSat.1 Media.

“Olivia has proven herself to be a superb executive with excellent creative instincts, production skills and industry relationships,” Kloiber said. “I am thrilled to have her join me in managing our many existing projects with phenomenal co-production partners and growing our slate with more great content.”

Brazilian filmmaker Juliana Rojas’ last Locarno experience was one to remember, culminating in a Special Jury Prize for her 2017 feature “Good Manners,” which played in competition. This time around her situation is less enviable, as the filmmaker presents “Cidade; Campo” (City; Country) in Locarno’s The Films After Tomorrow competition for productions halted by Covid-19 shutdowns.

Rojas is among Brazil’s most exciting film and TV writing-directing talents with a resume loaded with festival plaudits, including two Cannes Discovery Awards for “A Stem” in 2007 and “Doppelgänger” in 2012. But even a filmmaker with such a stellar track-record can’t escape the dire effects of the pandemic on the industry.

Rojas and her team are presently finalizing the script and looking at ways to adjust the project to its post-shutdown budget, which has suffered a hit, according to producer Sara Silveira of Dezenove Som e Imagens.

All right, so, a few months ago, when Deadpool 2 came out, we did an article called Deadpool 2: Who is Juggernaut? People were pretty annoyed because Juggernaut’s role in that movie as a major antagonist wasn’t advertised and they cried spoiler. And that’s a fair call. Apologies.

That said, if you think it’s a spoiler that Carnage is in any way alluded to in Venom, I don’t know what to tell you. It’s Carnage. Of Course he’s going to be at least referenced in a Venom movie. If there is one lesson to take away from Arrow Season 6 Episode 15 it is that things are not slowing down anytime soon.

Especially as the Dragon is now rising in Ricardo Diaz who is beginning his take over of Star City and the fall of Oliver Queen.

I have been stoked for "Doppelganger" ever since it was announced that Roy Harper was returning. Colton Haynes was always one of the best parts of Arrow when he was on.

But what had me more stoked was what this would do for Thea's storyline. A storyline that has been lacking for most of Arrow Season 6 sadly, excluding her coma trip.

It was beautiful to be reminded of how strong Thea's love for Roy was. She has lost a lot of people over the years and Roy is one of the last few people in her life she has left.

Haynes and Willa Holland...

This week on The CW’s Arrow, Roy Harper returned to the mix, and with him came the first interesting beats of Ricardo Diaz’s arc, a bold play by “Laurel” and, in the end, the arrival of a new threat.

So, the question last week wasn’t, “Where had Black Siren stumbled to?” but “What was she up to?” Because in a way, that wasn’t her but “our” Laurel approaching that trucker for help. Arriving at the Scpd, she claims that she is the Laurel Lance, whose death was faked by Damien Darhk and who for two years has been kept prisoner somewhere.

After the mess that was the civil war episode of "Collison Course," Arrow gets (way) back to basics in this episode, "Doppelganger." After a lengthy absence, Roy Harper is back and Thea puts back on her Speedy outfit. That's not all either. Laurel Lance is also "resurrected," even if it's just as a new mask for Black Siren. Even if all these returns end up being temporary, which is likely, they still facilitate a deeply satisfying and weirdly nostalgic episode of Arrow.

With all the hoopla surrounding Colton Haynes’ highly anticipated return to Arrow, it’s quite easy to place much focus on his character of Roy Harper. That aside, it looks like next week’s episode will boast even more reason to get us geeked.

We say that because Thea Queen will once again don her Speedy threads, something she hasn’t done very often since “retiring” from the vigilante lifestyle after season 4. To be honest, I’m always glad to see whenever she fails to kick the old habit because she isn’t really given much to do these days – and because her costume is so badass. Granted, actress Willa Holland has been on the show in a reduced capacity for season 5 and 6, but you have to admit that her character has just kind of “been there,” if you will.
