Before kids got into Stephen King, Scholastic Book Fairs introduced them to the tween horror maestro: R.L. Stine. The author's best known for his "Goosebumps" books, an anthology series where each book introduced a new horror for some intrepid young protagonist to confront. Werewolves, mud monsters, and Slappy the dummy, the last of whom Stine never understood the fanbase for, all gave us nightmares. But hey, at least we were reading!
"Goosebumps" is far from Stine's only enterprise, as he's also the visionary behind the "Fear Street" and "Mostly Ghostly" books, too. It should come as no surprise that many of his works have been adapted into films and TV shows over the years. Some you've undoubtedly heard of before while others will make you go, "Wait, that's an R.L. Stine project?"
Consider it homework to expand your Stine repertoire, and in case you don't have the time to watch all of them,...

When it comes to slasher films, the iconography of the killer is often more important than the story. As long as fans are being given the chance to watch Michael Myers show up in his white-painted Captain Kirk finest to slaughter anyone who gets in his way, no one cares about trying to make sense of the the nonsensical and convoluted timeline of the "Halloween" franchise. Even people who have never watched a horror movie in their life could probably identify Jason Voorhees from "Friday the 13th" in his iconic hockey mask, or clock Leatherface from "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" even without his titular weapon. The look of a slasher villain should strike fear into the hearts of the audience ... but it should also be memorable enough to be marketable.

More like Disney Minus, amirite?
Disney+ lost 700,000 subscribers over the final three months of 2024, which is the Walt Disney Company’s first quarter of fiscal year 2025. Not counting Disney+ Hotstar, the cheap Disney+ service in India, Disney+ now has 124.6 million subs.
ESPN+ also lost 700,000 subs in the period. Hulu was the streaming highlight, adding 1.6 million subscribers; it now has 53.6 million. All told, the company’s streaming business was profitable for its third-straight quarter. So it wasn’t all bad — or unexpected.
Disney anticipated the Q1 2025 loss of Disney+ subscribers, and now, it is forecasting another “modest decline” in subs for calendar 2025. It’s a far cry from the 4.4 million subscribers Disney+ added from June through September 2024. Blame price hikes and the expiration of certain promotions.
Wall Street expected Disney would report Q1 earnings per share (Eps) of $1.43 on $24.55 billion in revenue, per a consensus estimate compiled by Yahoo Finance. Disney...

Leonardo DiCaprio’s Bold Career Move (Photo Credit – Facebook)
Imagine this: Leonardo DiCaprio lighting the black flame candle in Hocus Pocus. But that almost happened. DiCaprio, fresh off Growing Pains and not yet the Oscar-winning legend we know today, was considered for the role of Max Dennison, the sarcastic teen at the center of the witchy chaos in Salem. So, what made him turn down the role of a lifetime for a Halloween cult classic? The answer? A little movie called What’s Eating Gilbert Grape—and some serious guts.
Director Kenny Ortega remembered when DiCaprio walked into the room like yesterday. “The [casting] ladies called me up, and they said, ‘We’re sending you an actor today, but he’s not available, but you’re going to fall in love with him, but you can’t have him,'” Ortega laughed.

It's time for a quick history lesson! In 1899, a newsboys' strike was held across New York City for two weeks. The strikers demanded increased wages for newsboys, who drove a chunk of the sales in the afternoons and evenings but ended up earning little to nothing. Circulation for Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst's newspapers was halted during this time, and the strike eventually succeeded/worked in favor of the newsboys, although other demands had to be met with compromise.
The impact of this event was so rousing that Disney made a film musical — "Newsies" — inspired by the strike in 1992, with Kenny Ortega helming the project. A young Christian Bale played strike leader Jack "Cowboy" Kelly, and composer Alan Menken — who has scored almost every Disney animated film you know and love — crafted 12 original songs for this now-beloved movie. Despite these promising elements, however, the film did not perform well in theaters,...

Making a successful movie in Hollywood is a challenging feat for even the best filmmakers. Then again, sometimes even the greatest cinematic endeavors get overlooked as a result of circumstances beyond their control. For every surefire hit like "Jurassic Park," "The Avengers," and "The Dark Knight," there exists a handful of pictures moviegoers ignore before discovering them years, even decades, after their initial release.
Classics like "The Shawshank Redemption" and "Office Space" failed miserably at the box office but eventually became beloved cinematic treasures after hitting home video and cable. Others, like "Hocus Pocus," steadily accrued a devoted fan base over time, while "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" fell flat on its face but quickly reworked itself into a campy treat audiences could participate in, leading to prolonged success.

One of TV's most recognizable (and highest-paid) actresses, Sarah Jessica Parker has an unsurprisingly fabulous net worth. Parker started appearing in films in the 1980s, with her first major role being Rusty in Footloose. She continued to work steadily, famously playing the enchanting witch Sarah Sanderson in Disney's 1993 cult classic, Hocus Pocus. But it would be her role as Sex and the City's shoe-obsessed protagonist Carrie Bradshaw that catapulted Parker to the A-list. The wildly successful HBO show spawned two movies, and its sequel series And Just Like That is coming back for season 3.
Parker was born in Nelsonville, Ohio to mother Barbara and father Stephen, and she's the fourth of eight siblings. From an early age, Parker knew she wanted to act, and made her Broadway debut at age 11. Outside of her acting career, Parker dated Robert Downey Jr. from 1984-1991. In 1997, Parker married Matthew Broderick, solidifying them...

From Living Dead Media and director Steve Wolsh (Muck, Kill Her Goats), the Christmas-themed sequel Return of the Living Dead will be shambling our way for Christmas 2025.
This footage shows the iconic Return of the Living Dead zombie known as Tarman dragging a Christmas tree through a cemetery as a blizzard rages around him. Watch below.
The new story takes place in a small Pennsylvania town over Christmas, and it’s set in 1985, 18 months after the events of the original film. “Fans of the film will know not to expect to see any returning characters, given their terrible fates in the original,” Living Dead Media explains. 1993's "Hocus Pocus" remains a Halloween classic that reliably graces the screens of audiences worldwide every spooky season. In fact, for '90s kids who grew up on the movie, there's a strong case to be made for "Hocus Pocus" being the greatest Halloween movie ever, even for adults.
The Sanderson Sisters, played by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy, were the stars of the film, introducing kids everywhere to witchcraft and making the whole thing look undeniably cool even as the trio embarked on a mission to devour children. But the kids who appear in the film were audiences' gateway into the world. Omri Katz's Max Dennison not only had one of the finest examples of that '90s curtain haircut, he was, like all of us '90s kids going into the movie, a fish very much out of water. Warning! Spoilers ahead for Yellowstone season 5, episode 11, "Three Fifty-Three."Yellowstone season 5, episode 11, entitled "Three Fifty-Three," features a medical examiner who is played by Vinessa Shaw, an actress who is known for several other projects. "Three Fifty-Three" focuses on the investigation into John Dutton's murder. A flashback scene shows Yellowstone's John Dutton dead after being attacked by several masked intruders before jumping to the present, where Kayce is investigating the crime. Part of his investigation takes him to the coroner's office.
The medical examiner is an important part of the aftermath of Kevin Costner's exit from Yellowstone in "Three-Fifty-Three." Kayce spends a long time in the coroner's office and must convince her to let him look at the body and re-examine it, which leads to the pivotal plot point of the local police re-opening the investigation and declaring that John's death is a homicide. There are few actors more synonymous with wonderful performances beneath layers of prosthetics and makeup than Doug Jones. Having appeared as Abe Sapian in the Guillermo Del Toro Hellboy films, the Creature in The Shape of Water, and even Billy Butcherson in Hocus Pocus, Jones has had a career that most actors simply dream of.
Doug can be seen in the recently released Nosferatu: Symphony of Horror, where he plays the title character; a role that Jones has wanted to play for decades. We spoke about the process of filming using elements from the original 1922 film as green screen backdrops, and how wonderful Max Schreck’s performance in the first film was. Doug is also starring in the final season of What We Do In The Shadows as The Baron, a role which has been an absolute highlight over the series’ 6 season run (and it was originally just supposed to be a one-episode cameo) Finally,...

Note: This story contains spoilers from “Yellowstone” Season 5, Episode 11.
Historically, “Yellowstone” has been at its most interesting, most explosive when the Duttons have had their backs up against the wall. Someone threatened their land or their livelihood, so they got a posse together and drove the attackers back.
In recent seasons though, that’s been easier said than done not just because they’ve been rustling with the evil Market Equities, but also because they’re trying to go up against the faceless enormity of the U.S. Government. It’s why John Dutton (Kevin Costner) became governor, and probably somewhat true to the experience of an actual rancher. But as a viewer, there’s just something kind of “meh” element to the Duttons trying to muddle their way through easements, eminent domain claims and estate tax issues.

Something Wicked this way comes in this week’s film quiz, with 30 all-new film-related questions, some of them about witchy business…
A movie version of Wicked has been a long time coming down the yellow brick road and this week’s new release still only covers the first half of the smash-hit Broadway musical. Meanwhile, this week’s film quiz is themed around witches but there are also questions about werewolf and vampire movies, slasher-movie villains, found-footage horror… heck, it’s looking more like a Halloween quiz than some of our Halloween ones.
Once you’ve completed all three rounds of movie-related questions, you’ll find a link to a separate post with the correct answers at the bottom of this post. As always, this is just for fun, but please let us know how you did in the comments (scores out of 31 this week!) and give us any other lovely feedback.

Viewing of Lost on Hulu and Netflix hit a high that week, finishing first among all acquired series with 1.03 billion minutes of viewing time in the United States, according to Nielsen. The former ABC series, which marked the 20th anniversary of its premiere in September, ranked second among all titles.
In first place was The Lincoln Lawyer, which spent a second week in the top overall spot and got over the 2 billion-minute mark (2.03 billion) for the first time in its three seasons. The drama based on Michael Connelly’s novels improved by about 24 percent week to week.
Tyler Perry’s Netflix series Beauty in Black was the top newcomer, scoring 740 million minutes of watch time for its opening week (it premiered Oct. 24). That was good for third place among original series behind The Lincoln Lawyer...

“I’m sorry, I guess I’m just confused,” quipped Marshall. “It’s November. Weren’t you supposed to get put away with the rest of the Halloween decorations?”

Magic comes in many forms, and the best magic movies explore them all. Magic, sorcery, and illusion pop up most often in fairy tales and family movies, but it's hardly confined to these genres, as magic pertains to much more than just Mary Poppins. From the awe of Studio Ghibli productions to the sinister wonder of Pan's Labyrinth, magic is a broad concept that can open several creative avenues. Whether set in a high-fantasy otherworld or a secretive castle in the near-modern day, movies featuring magic and illusion remain fascinating.
Magic has been a key storytelling component since fiction first formed millennia ago. The concepts of witches, wizards, spells, and sorcerers will likely appear in movies for the remainder of the medium's relevance. Be it Mickey Mouse charming a bunch of brooms or a bold quest to document the existence of the Blair Witch, magic crops up in many forms across every genre.

Love is Blind enchanted its way to the top of the Nielsen streaming charts from October 7 to 13, but Outer Banks came in closely behind, with both titles racking up about 1.2B minutes viewed.
For Love is Blind, that was a 16% increase over the viewership from the week prior, when Season 7 debuted — probably because three new episodes were made available during this interval. Overall, Nielsen says 94% of Love is Blind viewing this week came from the new season.
As for Outer Banks, the title returned with the first half of Season 4, on October 10, meaning those five new episodes drove quite a huge surge in viewing for the series in just a few days. It’s safe to say the series will remain on the Nielsen charts for several weeks as audiences continue to engage with the show and more episodes launch.

The season four premiere of Outer Banks brought the Netflix show back onto the streaming charts — but with only half a season released this time, it fell well short of its last premiere.
The YA drama delivered 1.19 billion minutes of viewing for the week of Oct. 7-13 (season four debuted Oct. 10), good for second place overall in Nielsen’s streaming rankings. By comparison, season three’s opening week in February 2023 — which featured the entire season released at once — drew 3.15 billion minutes of watch time.
The half-season release (part two premiered Thursday) for Outer Banks undoubtedly played a part in the lower viewing time total. Season four of Emily in Paris similarly had a sizable decline with a half-season premiere in August (but season three of Bridgerton in May did not).
Netflix’s dating show Love Is Blind led the Oct. 7-13 charts with 1.23 billion minutes of viewing; no other show crossed the 1 billion mark.

Marvel’s Agatha All Along series came to a close on Disney+ last week, and despite speculation that Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) might appear (or be resurrected), it didn’t happen. While speaking with THR, showrunner Jac Schaeffer explained how close they actually got to including Wanda in the series.
“It wasn’t really a for-real conversation, and to speak plainly, it’s a larger conversation of casting, logistics, availability, and budget,” Schaeffer said. “Also, to me, on a creative level, it didn’t feel fair to the character of Agatha. This is her story, and the idea of bringing Wanda back felt like it would upend that in a way. I love Wanda desperately, and I feel she is a part of the show in that the repercussions of her actions ripple throughout this chapter. Practical Magic is finally getting a sequel, and theres an important lesson it has to learn from one of Hocus Pocus 2s biggest mistakes. As the trends of legacy sequels and revivals gain force, more and more franchises and movies join, and among the latest ones is Practical Magic. Based on the book of the same name by Alice Hoffman and directed by Griffin Dunne, Practical Magic takes viewers to a small Massachusetts town to meet the Owens family, who, due to their ancestor, witch Maria Owens, carry a curse: any man who an Owens woman loves will die.
When the curse catches up with Sally (Sandra Bullock) and becomes a widow and single mother, she moves back with her aunts Jet (Dianne Wiest) and Frances (Stockard Channing). Some time later, Sally joins forces with her sister Gillian (Nicole Kidman) to get rid of her toxic boyfriend, but after killing him in self-defense,...

If you’ve visited Salem, Massachusetts, in the last decade or so, you’re probably well aware that the Disney movie Hocus Pocus was shot there. Disney+ has introduced a Top 10 list, and it is packed with Halloween titles ahead of the holiday. The Disney streaming service was originally launched in November 2019, seemingly benefitting, unintentionally, from the Covid-19 pandemic shutting down movie theaters in early 2020, causing even more audiences to turn to at-home streaming for entertainment.
There are quite a few original Disney+ movies and TV shows. The majority of these titles are in some way related to their most popular IP, including multiple series and miniseries set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Star Wars franchise. However, the streaming platform also features an extensive library of titles from various companies owned by Disney, including Pixar, National Geographic, Hulu, and 20th Century Studios. In March 2022, the library was expanded even further to include mature content due to an updated parental control function.

Disney+ has launched a Top 10 list to let users know what content is most streamed on the platform.
The feature highlights popular movies and TV shows from the streamer. Subscribers will see different rankings depending on their subscription and parental control settings.
Disney+’s Top 10 is composed by taking “several factors into account, including total views at the episode and movie level within a day and the growing popularity of new titles released during that time frame.” The ranking also combines movie and TV show titles.
When Deadline looked at its Top 10 list for Wednesday, October 30, the content was mostly Halloween-themed.
At the top of our list was 1993’s Hocus Pocus, the Kenny Ortega-created film that starred Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker.
Agatha All Along, which airs its season finale at 6 p.m. Pt / 9 p.m. Et on Wednesday night, took the second spot.

Nearly five years after Netflix first bowed its Top 10 lists worldwide, Disney+ is following suit.
Disney’s flagship streaming service on Wednesday launched “Top 10 Today,” a daily list showcasing popular movies and series on the platform. The goal — as it has been with Netflix, which pioneered the feature — is to drive engagement on Disney+ and give subscribers another way to find a new title to stream.
Disney+’s Top 10 Today list will vary for individual subscriber, depending on various factors. Those include the user profile’s content rating, subscription plan and location (the list is different for each country as title availability varies by market). Just in time for Halloween movie nights, Netflix released the new teen horror movie Time Cut on Oct. 30. It's the perfect addition to a spooky movie night that includes the fan-favorite Netflix original Fear Street trilogy and Don't Move, another recent horror release on the streamer that's shot straight to the peak of the top 10 most popular movies.

Despite the fact that he was not cast as Max after his audition, Hocus Pocus still has a connection to Leonardo DiCaprio's 1997 movie Titanic. Hocus Pocus is one of the major Disney classics when it comes to Halloween movies, its memorable story and amazing cast continuing to entertain audiences more than 30 years later. Though news on the potential Hocus Pocus 3 has been minimal, it would not be surprising if the Sanderson Sisters were not quite done with Salem yet, as the sequel, Hocus Pocus 2, was a streaming hit.

The FX mockumentary show, which stars Kayvan Novak, Matt Berry, Natasia Demetriou, and Mark Proksch as Staten Island-based vampire roommates Nandor, Laszlo, Nadja, and Colin Robinson, alongside Harvey Guilln as the human familiar Guillermo, is based on the 2014 New Zealand movie of the same name by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement. Every year, Halloween brings about the resurrection of the Sanderson Sisters for another season of merriment and Hocus Pocus.
Disney’s 1993 movie has become the classic choice for Halloween over the years, so much so that it got a long-awaited sequel in 2022 and talk of a third movie continues into 2024.

2023 marked the 30th anniversary of Disneys Hocus Pocus. For over two decades, fans have been watching the Halloween-themed movie repeatedly during the month of October and Disney+ gave fans a sequel in recent years (with a potential third movie on the way). Even the most die-hard fans, however, can miss details in their favorite movies.
Throughout the ninety-minute adventure, Max Dennison, his little sister Dani, and their new friend Allison spend their Halloween night taking on the witches the Sanderson sisters, and stopping them from ruining the lives of children all over Salem, Massachusetts. During all of the action and comedy, there were a lot of details fans could overlook. While some are intentional Easter eggs, others are mistakes, and still others are things fans only catch when they have seen the movie so many times that they know it by heart.

The 1993 fantasy comedy Hocus Pocus uses the always spooky and atmospheric town of Salem, Massachusetts as its setting, and fans of the movie will be glad to know they can go and visit the locations if they want. The beloved Halloween movie Hocus Pocus is a classic of the holiday season and is fondly remembered for its sometimes scary, often funny, characters and story of three witches who return from the dead to wreak havoc in modern Salem, Ma. It took almost 30 years for a sequel to materialize and now there are plans for a third Hocus Pocus movie.
It's the first film in the franchise that most fans hold so close to their hearts, however. Whether it's the committed performances from acting veterans like Sarah Jessica Parker, Bette Midler, and Kathy Najimy; or it's the cozy feeling of Salem in the fall, Hocus Pocus is a movie that's just easy to watch.

Kenny Ortega is now a name associated with some of Disneys biggest hits aimed at children and teenagers, and back in 1993, he brought the story of the Sanderson Sisters to life in Hocus Pocus. Ortega began his career as a choreographer, working in movies like Xanadu, St. Elmos Fire, and Dirty Dancing. In 1992, Ortega made his directorial debut with Newsies, a historical musical drama based on the New York City newsboys strike of 1899. For his second movie, Ortega left musicals aside and focused on a Halloween story with witches, magical books, zombies, and more.

On October 28, 2000, kids all across America tuned into the Nickelodeon Snick programming block to watch a new horror movie called "Cry Baby Lane." As bowls of microwaved popcorn flowed over, living room lights went down, and children gathered in front of the television, no one could have predicted that everyone watching would become a part of history. Directed by Peter Lauer, "Cry Baby Lane" is about two brothers — the feeble Andrew (Jase Blankfort) and massive jerk Carl (Trey Rogers) — who love hearing ghost stories from the undertaker, Mr. Bennett (Frank Langella).
One night, the undertaker tells the story of a local farmer whose wife gave birth to conjoined twins (the movie uses the insensitive term "Siamese twins" because it was the year 2000), with one of the babies being noticeably evil. The farmer kept the twins locked up in an attic and away from the public eye before they eventually got sick and died together.
