The pilot episode establishes that the original police station is across the street and to the right when walking out of The Imperial Hotel. This soon changes back-and-forth to the opposite direction for much of the series, with one episode even seeming to indicate that the buildings are no longer on the same street. When looking outside the station, it is obvious that the pub cannot be in the other direction to that given in the pilot episode (and those that match it) as there is a t-intersection a couple of blocks down from the station and the pub is not visible before it, and when looking in that direction from the pub there are only shops going up a hill to a church.
There is a one-way street directly opposite The Imperial Hotel (the pub sits at the top of the t-intersection), with buildings on both sides of it (including a large garden/park on the right and the post office tower on the left) and center street parking with parallel parking against both curbs. In various episodes, characters are seen to walk out of the front door of the pub onto a completely different street, with stores all the way along the opposite side and angle parking against both curbs. Similarly, many episodes show a different lane way running along the right side of the pub, with a huge park and no buildings visible across the street or in others a church.
Licence plates are reused frequently on the various different patrol cars used by Mt Thomas Station over the years, including several obviously fake Victorian plates. In Victoria license plates are not transferred between police cars; if a unit was transferred to another station or decommissioned (and sold) the license plates would go with it or be returned to the Department of Transport - a new police vehicle would be issued with new license plates every time. There are also many instances (particularly in the last few seasons), where the unmarked C.I.B. car features two different license plates depending on the episode.
A "Welcome to Mt Thomas" sign gives the town's population as 7805 in season one; in season seven another welcome sign states 6399 as the population. Whilst it could have decreased somewhat over the years, it would not have dropped by so much as the police station is actually upgraded with more officers and there are no signs of any significant number of residents moving away.
The distance between Mt Thomas and Widgeree is established in the first season as a "90-minute drive", thus necessitating the one-man police station in Widgeree. However, this distance gradually shortens more and more as the series progresses, resulting in a comment that Widgeree is now only 20 minutes' drive away in season 9.
With extremely rare exceptions, such as P.J.'s shooting of Raelene Darcy or Adam Cooper nearly dying in a crash during a street race, no senior officers ever turn up or even appear to be informed/mentioned dealing with major critical incidents such as Mount Thomas officers being shot, stabbed, abducted, held hostage or explosions, plane crashes, serial murders and so on. In the Victoria Police, situations such as these would always be overseen by the District or Regional Duty Officer, which would at least be an inspector, and especially in the case of a member being seriously injured, high-ranking commissioned officers would always attend to check on their welfare. Throughout the series all of these situations are otherwise handled by Tom Croydon, which would never happen initially.
Tourists and others who would not know the police station's direct phone number are constantly seen calling 000 and going straight through to the station to talk to one of the officers. Emergency calls in Victoria are answered by the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority who then advise police of incidents via radio; they do not pass callers through to local stations. While most episodes do have the "Heelers" being tasked jobs by VKC (police dispatch), most also have these calls coming directly through to the station which would never happen.
The "Heelers" are frequently shown to investigate crimes or matters that would be handled by specialist officers of the Victoria Police from other stations, especially major or fatal car crashes, which would be looked at by the Major Collision Investigation Unit (originally the Accident Investigation Squad). Homicides come a close second with those detectives rarely turning up and instead "asking" the Mount Thomas officers to investigate on their behalf, which would very rarely occur.
Throughout the series, Mount Thomas is shown to have at least three major supermarkets (and several smaller), multiple banks, service stations, hardware stores and at least ten pubs, but whenever someone calls the station to report a crime the answering officer will always tell Tom or a colleague (with extremely rare exceptions) that an incident has occurred/is in progress "down at the pub/at the supermarket/the bank/the servo", etc., without ever specifying exactly which one, but the other officer magically automatically knows before responding.
