The film director of "Cudowne miejsce" (Holy Place), Jan Jakub Kolski became famous for his unique film style that is called "magic realism". Let's quote the definition from Wikipedia. Magical realism portrays fantastical events in an otherwise realistic tone. It brings fables, folk tales, and myths into contemporary social relevance. Fantasy traits given to characters, such as levitation, telepathy, and telekinesis, help to encompass modern political realities that can be phantasmagorical. The plot of "Holy Place" can be so summarized: Jakub (Adam Kamien) is a young and ambitious priest. He is sent to a small, rural parish. At first, the inexperienced priest cannot cope with his parishioners. That is why he seeks help from Father Andrzej (Krzysztof Majchrzak) from a neighboring parish. In the meantime, everyone is waiting for a miracle. And it happened. A young waitress, Andryszkowna (Grazyna Blecka-Kolska), has been marked with stigmata. Father Jakub succumbs to the girl's charm. I was making all these quotations because I think that it is impossible to judge "Holy Place" objectively. I can only say that to me the film was visually interesting, well-acted, and well-made. But not being a religious person, I do not have the key to the magical world of Jan Jakub Kolski, and that is why this film left me completely emotionally untouched.
