It may be hard for folks who weren't around at the time to understand, but there was a moment when Hugh Grant appeared poised to become one of the biggest movie stars on the planet.
Flashback to the spring of 1994. Bill Clinton was a popular U.S. President, everyone was drinking Zima, and moviegoers were flocking to cineplexes to see the British rom-com "Four Weddings and a Funeral." It was a surprise hit that picked up word-of-mouth steam via a slow roll-out from its distributor Gramercy Pictures, which was fortunate to have a great, immensely appealing film at a time when theaters were being inundated with dreck like "Major League II," "Cops and Robbersons" and "D2: The Mighty Ducks."
While "Four Weddings and a Funeral" is at heart an ensemble comedy, Grant's endearingly flappable demeanor and effortless delivery of the film's hilariously quippy dialogue had some critics comparing him to Hollywood's greatest Grant.

Cynthia Nixon revealed to “Sex and the City” co-star Kristin Davis on Monday that when she joined the HBO comedy as Miranda, she thought another famous “Kristin” had been cast as Charlotte: “I didn’t know who you were,” she said.
The other Kristin in question? British actress and recently a Best Actress Oscar nominee for “The English Patient,” Kristin Scott Thomas.
Nixon, who played Miranda on the hit HBO series, stopped by Davis’ “Are You a Charlotte?” podcast on Monday and talked about the funny case of mistaken identity as well as their experience on the initial episodes working together.
“Sarah [Jessica Parker] and I knew each other quite well. We’d worked together a bunch of times, and we were always auditioning for the same parts and stuff when we were kids,” Nixon said. “And Kim [Cattrall], I knew a little bit, I’d seen her in a few things.”

In the realm of romantic comedies, Netflix’s latest offering “Love Forever” (Kärlek fårever) brings a fresh Nordic perspective to the well-worn genre of wedding mishaps. Directed by Staffan Lindberg, this Swedish film delves into the chaos that ensues when societal expectations collide with personal desires.
The story centers around Hanna (Matilda Källström) and Samuel (Charlie Gustafsson), a Stockholm couple whose dreams of an intimate countryside wedding on the picturesque island of Gotland are upended by the interference of family and friends. What begins as a simple celebration quickly devolves into a comedic disaster, complete with arguments, revelations, and even an escape attempt by the bride.
Lindberg, known for his offbeat comic style, uses the wedding setting to explore deeper themes of love, family dynamics, and the struggle between tradition and personal autonomy. The film’s narrative takes unexpected turns, blending humor with moments of genuine emotion as the characters navigate the tumultuous event.

Hugh Grant, known for his roles in iconic romantic comedies like Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, and Love Actually, became a beloved figure in Hollywood during the ’90s and early 2000s. In the entertainment industry, image is everything, and Andie MacDowell was no stranger to crafting narratives that complemented her public persona. During her first marriage to Paul J. Qualley, MacDowell painted a picture of domestic harmony.
She often spoke fondly of her ex-husband as a devoted Mr. Mom, managing their household and caring for their three children while she pursued her flourishing acting career. This portrayal struck a chord with fans, who admired the seemingly unconventional setup of a house-husband supporting his wife’s career, a rarity at the time.

However, following their divorce, MacDowell’s statements took a surprising turn, casting doubt on the idyllic family life she had previously described. In a candid interview, MacDowell finally shared the truth that shook fans.

Ask the average pop culture fan about Mindy Kaling and they’ll likely respond about her career as a writer, actor, and general celebrity. They’ll probably credit her, to varying degrees, for a range of projects she’s been on or behind the scenes of since “The Office,” but maybe not the specifics of her work as producer.
Kaling became a producer on “The Office,” but in 2012 founded Kaling International at the same time that she launched her own sitcom, “The Mindy Project.” Since then, the company has produced original titles across film and television, from the aforementioned single-cam sitcom to recent hits like “The Sex Lives of College Girls,” which concluded its third season on Max. To celebrate another season, we decided to revisit every Kaling International title as a primer or refresher for those interested in her work.

Bollywood Mascot: Andie MacDowell, best known for her iconic roles in Groundhog Day and Four Weddings and a Funeral, has chosen to step away from Hollywood and embrace a more serene lifestyle in South Carolina. At 66, MacDowell shares that this decision has been incredibly fulfilling, offering her peace and contentment after years of living in the fast-paced entertainment industry.
MacDowell’s move came during a significant phase in her life—when her children, including actress Margaret Qualley, became “empty nesters.” The change in family dynamics led MacDowell to seek out a community that would provide a sense of grounding and connection. Encouraged by her daughter Margaret, she sold her large Los Angeles home and relocated to a supportive South Carolina neighborhood. She even explored becoming more involved in the local community by considering attending an Episcopal church.
Along with her personal relocation, MacDowell has also been open about her health struggles.

Hugh Grant became rom-com loyalty in the 1990s and 2000s and starred in some of the most successful and influential movies of the genre, but one of them had a disastrous start. Hugh Grant’s acting career began in the early 1980s and gained recognition for his role as Clive Durham in the romantic drama Maurice. However, the movie that boosted his career and turned him into an international star was Four Weddings and a Funeral. Directed by Mike Newell, Four Weddings and a Funeral marked the first collaboration between Newell and Grant.
Written by Richard Curtis, Four Weddings and a Funeral follows Charles (Grant) and his group of friends: his brother David, his flatmate Scarlett, the aristocratic Fiona and her brother Tom, and couple Matthew and Gareth. Charles is always the best man at weddings, and at one he meets Carrie (Andie MacDowell), an American woman he has an...

Hollywood has long been fascinated with the concept of time travel. Whether it is killer cyborgs from the future or extra-terrestrials capable of simultaneously communicating with the past and future, we've had no shortage of captivating time-travel films. Often, these movies eschew logic for thrills, hoping viewers are more enamored with the spectacle to worry about plot contrivances. Then again, sometimes writers and directors make too much sense and threaten to put viewers into a coma with their scientific reasoning. Either way, most time-travel adventures produced in Tinseltown tend to leave some sort of mark on audiences, for better or worse.

Hugh Grant is detailing just how com-plicated comedy films can be to make.
The iconic star told Variety that while he has led more than a few classic rom-coms, the comedy genre itself is “difficult” to capture — and usually has a “miserable process” during production.
“I just think ‘com’ is difficult. I don’t know about ‘rom,’” Grant said. “Rom is not easy — and you need to mean it — but com is certainly very difficult.”
The “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy” actor continued of making comedies, “It’s a miserable process. You’ve probably been on comedy film sets and there’s no laughter. You’re doing it in a vacuum and if you’re very lucky, you might hear a stifled snort from someone sitting near the monitor. That’s gold to you.”

Hugh Grant Shares A Wildly Funny Encounter At Comic-Con (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Hugh Grant’s San Diego Comic-Con experience turned into the bizarre when a hot dog costume followed him for three whole days. As the actor promoted Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves alongside co-stars like Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez, Grant revealed an unsettling (yet hilarious) stalker moment that’s still giving him nightmares.
During an interview with Collider, Grant admitted to his Comic-Con anxieties—feeling “old” and “past it” compared to Pine’s younger, superhero appeal. But the audience proved him wrong. The room wasn’t met with “dead silence,” as Grant feared, but instead, one particular fan showed unwavering affection.
“Only one person at that convention really loved me,” Grant quipped. “And he was dressed for three days as a hot dog. And he followed me wherever I went. I couldn’t shake him. I still have nightmares about him.

In "Heretic," Hugh Grant does something brand new as an actor — which is pretty shocking when you consider that the guy's been a major movie star since the 1990s — and takes on a role that uses his sheepish British charm in the scariest way possible. Namely, he plays the "bad guy" (so to speak) in "Heretic," a new horror thriller from Scott Beck and Bryan Woods where two Mormon missionaries, Sister Barnes and Sister Paxton stumble upon the home of a recluse named Mr. Reed (Grant). Mr. Reed invites the two girls into his home, but before long, they realize he may not be receptive to their invitation into the Mormon faith, and the situation is actually much worse than Mr. Reed just being an unwilling participant; they're actively in danger in his house.

The Verdict Is in — ‘Juror # 2’ Is #1 on VOD While ‘Red One’ and ‘Conclave’ Get Warp Speed Streaming
For a week without any new hit movie PVOD releases or a particularly interesting Netflix lineup, some interesting news tops our report this week.
Clint Eastwood’s “Juror # 2” debuts at #1 on PVOD. As noted initially last week, it immediately topped iTunes’ VOD last week and has maintained that position, and is also tops for the full week at Fandango.
That’s a key sign of how public awareness of VOD has grown and how, for many, it’s a main source of recent movies that are otherwise minimally available to audiences in theaters. In the case of “Juror # 2,” this was because of WB’s decision to keep its release limited (with very little marketing and most awareness created by social media outrage over its handling). But the primacy of VOD as a major source of revenue, and as a priority in terms of release, has been...

Netflix just dropped a new animated Christmas movie, That Christmas, adapted from a brilliant children’s book series by the director of one of the most beloved Christmas movies ever made. That Christmas is the directorial debut of veteran animator Simon Otto, who previously worked as Head of Character Animation on the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy. Released on Netflix on December 4, That Christmas is a wonderful new entry in the Christmas movie canon, and a great holiday viewing choice for families.
When it comes to family-friendly animated entertainment, the first names are Disney and DreamWorks, and Illumination has quickly climbed the ranks with Despicable Me and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. In recent years, Netflix has been making a name for itself in the realm of original animation. The streamer has released some great animated movies in the past few years, like Nimona, Spellbound, and The Mitchells vs. the Machines.

Netflix’s fifth and final original Christmas movie for 2024 is now streaming, and this one is animated. But you’re still going to recognize a whole lot of the cast.
Written and directed by Richard Curtis, who brought fans “Love, Actually,” the film centers on a group of people in a small town in the UK, getting ready to celebrate Christmas. Like “Love, Actually,” the story is told via vignettes, jumping around between different groups and pairings.
And as you meet those groups and pairings, you’re definitely going to recognize some of those voices. Here’s who we have.

The big man himself is voiced by Brian Cox, who you likely know from his time on “Succession,” or films including “X2: X-Men United,” “Troy,” “Red,” “Zodiac” and “Trick ‘r Treat,” among many others.

“That Christmas” is an animation movie directed by Simon Otto. With the voices of Bill Nighy and Brian Cox.
Netflix’s latest addition to the holiday movie roster, “That Christmas”, arrives with the pedigree of Richard Curtis, the mind behind romantic comedy classics like “Love Actually” and “Four Weddings and a Funeral”. This animated feature attempts to modernize Christmas while simultaneously harking back to its essence, a balancing act that yields mixed results.
The film’s premise revolves around a Christmas celebration turned upside down when the adults find themselves stranded on a ferry, leaving the younger generation to forge their own holiday traditions. Meanwhile, Santa Claus, voiced by the inimitable Brian Cox, embarks on his annual gift-giving journey with his trusty reindeer.
Curtis’s trademark sentimentality is on full display, weaving multiple storylines into a tapestry of holiday cheer. The animation is undoubtedly a strong point, bringing a vibrant and festive atmosphere to life.

What is a Christmas movie? There’s two possible answers to that question. It can be a Christmas-themed movie—with all the merriment of the festival. But it can also be a movie that is set around the time of Christmas, say a Die Hard, for example, or the very recent Terrifier 3. We are, of course, here to talk about That Christmas, Netflix’s latest Christmas offering—perhaps the first of this season. Directed by Simon Otto (known for his remarkable work as the animator in the How to Train Your Dragon franchise), it does fall under the Christmas-themed movie category, and despite being primarily for kids, it does boast of a stellar voice cast that has names like Brian Cox, Fiona Shaw, Jodie Whittaker, and Bill Nighy. Thanks to someone like Otto at the helm of it, the animation is vibrant and colorful, just the kind of thing...

Hugh Grant‘s career has entered what the actor himself coined the “freak show stage” of his career. From the oh-so-tiny Oompa Loompa in Wonka to the short-lived Edward Keplinger in The Regime, the seasoned British actor has departed from his romantic lead typecast. For his most recent leading role as Mr. Reed in Heretic, Grant traps two young Mormon missionaries in his basement game of faith and horror. Green-haired, dancing orange man aside, Mr. Reed is his most extreme role to date. Playing a man who traps women in cages is as large a departure as he can take, especially when his origins are largely rooted as charming leads in romantic comedies. And not just any romantic leads. Grant has starred in some of the most iconic romantic comedies: Edward Farris in Ang Lee’s Sense and Sensibility, William Thacker in Richard Curtis‘ Notting Hill, Charles in Four Weddings and a Funeral...

Breaking the fourth wall in film is both a radical concept and one that's readily familiar to audiences, even if they don't know the phrase "breaking the fourth wall." Acknowledging the audience in some form or fashion has happened in everything from Disney animation (as when Scar objects passionately to hearing the song "It's a Small World" at one point in "The Lion King") to '80s-era teen comedies to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But every so often, audiences are thrown for a true loop when the fourth wall, that demarcation point between the big screen and those watching what's displayed there, is demolished so swiftly and inexplicably that there's nothing left but the rubble. 20 years ago, one such moment happened in a mainstream, big-budget sequel that was established to take place in some facsimile of the real world without automatically occupying space in our real world. The film is 2004's excellent "Ocean's Twelve,...

Here’s why Hugh Grant’s wife was kidnapped. ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Okay, wait a second—Hugh Grant’s honeymoon just got a whole lot crazier. The guy known for playing charming-but-awkward love interests in movies like Love Actually had a real-life drama unfold in Paris when his wife, Anna Eberstein, got “kidnapped” by an angry taxi driver. Yup, you read that right—kidnapped.
Here’s how it went down: Hugh and Anna, freshly hitched, were cruising around Paris when things went south. After asking the driver if his credit card machine was working, they reached their destination only to find out…it wasn’t. The €6 fare wasn’t an issue—except for the tiny detail that Hugh didn’t have cash on him. So, the driver rolls them to an Atm. Cool, right? Except that machine was broken too.
Now, Hugh’s starting to sweat. “I panicked and said to my new wife,...

The 15th annual Governors Awards, hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, celebrated industry legends on Sunday night, most notably music and producing icon Quincy Jones, who died earlier this month at the age of 91.
The entire crowd was moved to tears when his daughter Rashida Jones, accompanied by three of her siblings, took the stage to speak about their legendary father. Rashida fought through emotions as she read parts of her father’s speech that he had intended to read on the night, and it was followed by an uplifting tribute by Jennifer Hudson, who was accompanied by a 12-member gospel choir. She performed “Maybe God Is Tryin’ to Tell You Something’,” a song from the 1985 film “The Color Purple.”
There was no emcee for the celebration, which was surprising after comedian John Mulaney’s showstopping duties last year. Instead, following opening remarks from Academy President Janet Yang,...

Oxford grad Hugh Grant has outgrown most of his romantic comedy ticks from his early years – flopsy-mopsy hair, fluttery eyelashes and charming stutter – and has matured into an exceptional and versatile actor. Not that he has lost his sense of humor. Anyone who chuckled over his villainous turn in this year’s “Paddington 2” as a pompous, cravat-wrapped actor who frames his cuddly ursine co-star for a crime he didn’t commit can testify to that Then there was his finely tuned scoundrel turn in the BBC miniseries, “A Very English Scandal,“ in which his Parliament member Jeremy Thorpe plots the botched murder of his male lover.
Grant began his acting career in the ‘80s as secondary player in both British period pieces — some good (“Maurice”) and others faintly ridiculous (“The Lair of the White Moon”) – and Hollywood comedies (the gangster farce “Mickey Blue Eyes”). But any hopes that he...
