This is the true story of 15-year old Kirsten Costas who was stabbed to death by a classmate, Bernadette Protti, on June 23, 1984. Both girls attended Miramonte High School in Orinda, California.

After the murder, the Costas family moved to Hawaii. Bernadette Protti was released from prison in 1992 at the age of 23. Following her release, Bernadette Protti legally changed her name to Jeannette Butler and moved to Oklahoma and worked as a nurse. She then married and changed her name to Jeanette Tomanka. She currently lives in Oregon with her husband and child.
The name of the social service group the girls joined was the Bob-o-Links. Protti lured Costas out of her home on false pretenses by telling her there was a dinner for the new "Bobbies".
Stacy, Angela, and Monica were the only students who were based on people in the real-life case. The rest were fictionalized.
