There are a couple of ways of interpreting this. It could be that Joe got Mollie to help with his scheme, to make the relatives jealous.Which at first glance, is what the end implies. She's standing across the street with Douglas, happy that someone has finally proven their love for the old man, and her part in the story was a ploy all along. Or it could be that Joe actually took her in for some company and she ended up chasing after his money.There's more evidence to suggest this.
1.When Joe offers Danny a loan if he chooses him over his father,she looks genuinely disgusted with him and leaves.
2.Joe later tells her the same story he told Danny about giving his money to someone before he dies and she looks eager to inherit it and looks upset when he says he plans to give it to Danny (Michael J.Fox).Danny's in the room,but he's too far away to hear them.There would be no reason for this conversation if she was working with Joe.
3.She takes Joe upstairs to have sex with him,(a scam for the relatives maybe,) but after they're interrupted she looks genuinely ashamed of herself.
Danny (Michael J.Fox) is the second cousin to Carl (Ed Begley,jr) and his sister Patti (Colleen Camp).Frank (Phil Hartman) and Glen (Jere Burns) are the other blood relatives.Carl calls Patti "sis" at the beginning of the film,but it is not mentioned if Frank and Glen are their brothers or cousins.
