- 80Orlando SentinelJay BoyarOrlando SentinelJay BoyarNavy Seals stands out among this summer's violence-oriented pictures as the only one that doesn't leave your brain feeling like mashed potatoes. There are plenty of exploding bombs in this picture, not to mention various other forms of destruction...But the action is orchestrated so sensitively that it's both aesthetically satisfying and emotionally resonant. There's a texture to the violence in Navy Seals that's completely absent in this summer's kaboom cartoons.
- 70IGNIGNBiehn, in what would unfortunately be the last of his pure good guy roles, shines in the type of role he does best: a hardened and reluctant hero who is bound by honor to do right no matter what the cost.

- 50TV Guide MagazineTV Guide MagazineCharlie Sheen and Michael Biehn star in this visually engaging, fast-paced action film about an elite anti-terrorist unit of the US Navy. Unfortunately, an uneven script and undeveloped characters weaken the dramatic content of the story.
- 40Los Angeles TimesPeter RainerLos Angeles TimesPeter RainerThe reactionary empty-headedness of this R-rated movie gets to you, spoiling whatever comic-strip enjoyment it might have had. In the “Rambo” movies, you’d have to be almost as much of a lunkhead as Rambo to take their “politics” seriously. But “Navy SEALS,” directed by Lewis Teague, isn’t scaled to be a cartoon; it’s more like a hypercharged military training film.

- 30The New York TimesCaryn JamesThe New York TimesCaryn JamesIt might have helped if the film makers had had the humor to see they were turning out ''Teen-Age Mutant Ninja Seals.'' As it is, they take their explosives and their silly roles much too seriously.
