This would have been an excellent series

The imagery showcased here is utterly fascinating.

Back then, MTV used to have some great animations such as Liquid Television and Æon Flux. Too bad those days are long gone, and nowadays it would be practically impossible to see something as weird and experimental as this on television. Not even on streaming services.

This Was Actually Made For Television?...The Mind Boggles

I first saw this early Henry Sellick animated short at a festival of animated short films. I had never heard of Sellick before, but after seeing this, I thought..."Wow, I'll have to keep my baby greens open for any other works by him". This dreamy, surreal short would be the perfect film to be screened at just about any midnight movie, before the main feature (if,in fact, midnight movies still existed--with the possible exception of 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)',which would work,as well). I would imagine it would also work at a screening of surreal, experimental, avant garde films, too. I can't imagine this strange little film being aired on television (outside of being aired in the early hours of the morning,on the Sundance,or IFC channel). No rating, but too bizarre/cerebral to rate.

An early showcase for Selick's talent

After seeing the short film "Slow Bob in the Lower Dimensions," I filed away the name Henry Selick as one to watch. This work is an ambitious and intriguing mixture of animation techniques, and the results are both whimsical and surreal. The background music, carefully composed by the Residents, augments the visuals seamlessly. "Slow Bob" is worthwhile viewing for Selick fans and animation fans in general.

      awesome

i just have to say.. after seeing slow bob.. i know why the nightmare before christmas was so great.. and it wasn't because of burton. selick direct TNBC, and his visual style and mise en scene is what drives the film. i hope he does some more soon.

      A Great Showcase of Talent

With 'Slow-Bob', originially airing on MTV, Selick shows off his considerable talents not just with stop motion animation(of which he uses several differing techniques), but also with storytelling. Using a minimum of words and innovative integration of live action and animation, he creates a miniature universe of his own. Unfortunately, MTV no longer showcases the work of talented artists such as Selick, but you can find this short on one of the 'Liquid Television' compila

      • Trivia
This short was made as a pilot for an intended surrealist animated series, that'd have one continuous storyline. While the reception of the pilot was good, its creator Henry Selick got an offer from Tim Burton, who saw and loved the short, to direct his movie The Nightmare Before Christmas, instead. Selick accepted the offer and the show never got made.
