In Serbia, the series enjoys a cult status to this day because UN sanctions against Serbia in the early 1990s prevented the airing of major films and TV shows, and the show's setting in tropical abundance highly contrasted the everyday poverty in Serbia at the time. In fact, the show originally aired under the title "Detektiv u raju", meaning "A Detective in Paradise".
Nick says to Sylvie, "Now Ian can gamble his future away right alongside the immaterial girl." This is an allusion to Madonna's hit song "Material Girl."
