Director Haines was working with Martin Scorsese's film preservation project on preserving and restoring color films, and decided to release "Alien Space Avenger" with 3-strip, dye-transfer color prints, making it the first U.S. film release in 15 years using this process, common to the old Technicolor movies. He traveled to Beijing, China in June 1989 with his film negative to prepare color matrices at the Chinese lab which still had Technicolr equipment in use (no longer available in America) and returned with two dye-transfer color prints, one of which was used for a premiere showing at the Toronto FIlm Festival in September.
