It can’t be denied that as far as the old-time action heroes go, Steven Seagal doesn’t get much respect these days. A whole lot has been written about Steven Seagal’s behaviour off-screen (much of it by us), and I’m not going to rehash it all here, but suffice it to say there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of goodwill left over for the former ponytailed action hero. While many would say he’s become a parody of himself in recent years, one shouldn’t forget that, at the start of his career, Seagal was ultra-popular. His Aikido moves, plus his tall, almost lanky figure and quiet demeanour made him unique among action heroes of the day. And, if you look at his filmography, his first five movies are really good as far as action flicks of the era go. Everything else? Well, not so much,...

A while back, a terrific book about the golden age of action stars called “The Last Action Heroes” came out (buy it here). Written by Nick De Semlyen, the book takes a very affectionate look at all of the icons we grew up with in the 80s and 90s, with one notable exception. Steven Seagal does not come off well in the book – at all. One of the wildest stories from the book recounts a time when Seagal grew outraged over the fact that a meeting room he wanted was being occupied by the legendary Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau.
The two actors, who would have been in their late sixties then, were participating in a read-through for their hit comedy Grumpy Old Men. According to the book, the vibe in the room was light, with the two old pros cracking up their director, Daniel Petrie and assembled guests. One of them was William Osborne,...

Iconic action heroes like Keanu Reeves, Bruce Willis, Clint Eastwood, Sylvester Stallone, Harrison Ford, Jackie Chan, and Arnold Schwarzenegger have made a significant impact on the action genre. These actors bring unique style and charm to their roles, creating memorable performances and iconic roles in films like The Matrix and Die Hard. The action genre has provided audiences with thrilling entertainment for decades, thanks to the contributions of these legendary action heroes.
The best action movie stars of all time made their mark on the genre by portraying tough-as-nails heroes, stalwart sidekicks, despicable villains, and everything in between, though all gained a legacy from starring in the most pulse-pounding big screen experiences. Various actors have stepped into the action genre over the years, with some great examples who bucked typecasting and proved to be solid action stars, like Colin Firth in The Kingsman and Bob Odenkirk in Nobody. However, the...

Many people may not know this, but before Steven Seagal’s action movie heyday, he worked as a martial arts instructor and choreographer. Most famously, he was super agent Michael Ovitz’s martial arts teacher. Ovitz, notoriously, thought he could make anyone a movie star, and proved it by securing Steven Seagal a movie deal at Warner Bros, where he made Above the Law… and the rest was history.
Another guy Steven Seagal trained was Sean Connery, who was one of Ovitz’s first major clients. The agent paired Connery up with Seagal to get him into shape for the unofficial James Bond movie, Never Say Never Again. Connery was fifty-two at the time and had a couple of fight sequences in the film, so Seagal was brought in to whip him into shape. One day, while sparring, Seagal broke Connery’s wrist. The urban legend is that Connery did something that made him angry,...

Gene Lebell, who had an acting and stunt career that stretched from The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet to 24 and who the WWE called today “a towering figure in the world of martial arts,” has died. He was 89.
Lebell reportedly had more than 1,000 TV and movie credits, mostly as a stuntman, but also as a heavy, often a fight referee and sometimes a colorful background character. Dubbed “The Godfather of Grappling,” he faced off onscreen against Chuck Norris, Steven Seagal, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Bruce Lee. He refereed Muhammad Ali’s infamous fight against Japanese wrestler Antonio Inoki. Holding a 10th degree red belt in Judo and a 9th degree black belt in Ju-jitsu, helped train everyone from Lee to Norris to “Rowdy” Roddy Piper and Ronda Rousey.
“Gene was the guy who taught Bruce Lee about grappling,” according to comedian, podcaster and UFC color commentator Joe Rogan.

Whose Episode Is It?
Usually the penultimate episode of a “Walking Dead” season is an “all hands on deck” set-up exercise to get everything in place for the finale. In a strange turn, “Worth” does the opposite, resolving all the interpersonal conflict between the Saviors to clear the way the clash the show has been building for the last 2 years: Rick vs Negan. The issue is that those cracks in the Saviors’ unity were intriguing and added an x-factor to the tired primary conflict. After “Worth,” all that’s left is a feeling of “let’s get this over with.”

This weekend sees the release of Eli Roth’s remake of Michael Winner’s “Death Wish” (read our review here). Remaking “Death Wish” is a strange undertaking, because the premise of a regular person rising up to “clean up the streets” has been done multiple times since 1974 (and essentially, the four “Death Wish” sequels are remakes of the original in and of themselves). The five-year span in which “Dirty Harry” (1971), “Death Wish” (1974), and “Taxi Driver” (1976) came out somehow metamorphosed the three films into something that has influenced decades of revenge action movies, usually involving government or law enforcement of some kind doing the revenge (“Taken,” “The Punisher,” “Out For Justice,” etc.

“They sent me out for Under Siege 2,” McCarthy began, describing a 1995 film Seagal starred in, adding that she “purposefully wore a muumuu to the audition so the casting people would actually look at my face and watch my work.”
When it was finally her turn to audition, McCarthy said she noticed “there was no one else in the room,” but she convinced herself that wasn’t a problem because “he’s a celebrity.

Rolling Thunder (1977) screens Midnights next weekend (April 8th and 9th) at The Moolah Theater and Lounge (3821 Lindell Blvd, St. Louis, Mo 63108) as part of Destroy the Brain’s monthly Late Night Grindhouse film series.
Paul Schrader followed his Taxi Driver screenplay with the one for Rolling Thunder, a gritty revenge thriller directed by John Flynn in 1977. Similarities abound as both are about Vietnam vets who are ticking time bombs pushed to the brink by the violence they’ve come home to. But Rolling Thunder’s plot eventually veers from character study into a Death Wish-style vigilante thriller. Like Taxi Driver, it leads slowly toward a cathartic bloodbath finale. Rolling Thunder is highly regarded by fans and critics alike,...

All due respect to "Mad TV" and "Dirty Work" fans, but for this writer Artie Lange's greatest performance will always be his eight-year run on "The Howard Stern Show." From 2001 to 2009, the gravelly-voiced comedian worked as the King of All Media's brash, no-nonsense, fan-beloved sidekick, a role that brought him his greatest career success ("It was the closest I ever felt to being a rock star") but also brought his personal demons to the fore. His stint on the show came to an abrupt and chilling end in January 2010, when Lange, at that time addicted to heroin, was hospitalized for eight months following a suicide attempt (an episode he has discussed publicly and wrote about in his 2013 memoir "Crash and Burn"). Five years on from his terrifying downward spiral, Lange has rebounded and continues to work, performing standup gigs and making guest appearances on TV shows including "Louie" and Californication.

Steven Seagal has made only one horror movie to date, and that was 2009's Against the Dark, in which he had a cameo that found him beating off vampires. Yet, here at Dread Central we've been known to cover the world of the bizarre and the paranormal. You're about to learn something about Seagal that is beyond bizarre...
Did you ever notice the strangest thing about Seagal movie titles is that they tell a story in order of their release? No? Check IMDb if you don't believe. Sit back, dear reader, and allow me to take you on a strange trip filled with action, madmen, and revenge.
Steven Seagal was Above The Law, but he was too Hard To Kill so now he's been Marked For Death by Jamaicans who are Out For Justice. Can he live while Under Siege and On Deadly Ground? Could you survive while Under Siege...

“They don’t write them like this any more, they really don’t” says a grinning Ian Ogilvy, sitting back casually in his dressing room on the set of Sacha Bennett’s dark crime thriller We Still Kill the Old Way. The actor, now in his 70s, once starred alongside the likes of Meryl Streep and Bruce Willis in Death Becomes Her, and Christopher Plummer and Orson Welles in Waterloo – yet the talented performer admits that work tends to dry up, in what can be a shrewd and unforgiving business.
“Men and women of my age don’t work that much any more, and in Hollywood, we work even less,” he said. “So I’ve done other things – I’ve been writing books, plays, I teach, I direct – I’ve found alternative ways of making a living. Which was lucky, because the business dries up for you. If you rely on acting at my age,...

After a day of giving thanks, eating turkey, and watching TV with the family, a common impulse is to get out of the house and go shopping. Just kidding! Instead of braving the Black Friday brawls, sit back and relax with even more TV marathons. (That’s what Cyber Monday is for, isn’t it?) Standouts include complete(-ish) sets of favorite franchises such as Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Wars, and Star Trek, as well as guilty-pleasure reality series like House Hunters International and Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta.

So many actors have tried, and so many actors have failed. Accents have long proven to be one of the hardest things to hone when it comes to a film role. While Irish seems to be the most challenging of dialects to lock down, there are also other accents — even American — that have yet to be mastered in cinema.
Playing a Serbian posing as a Bosnian in the upcoming "Killing Season," John Travolta is going a rare route. It's debatable whether he can pull it off, but he doesn't have to worry about sounding all sorts of wrong if he's in the company of these actors with the worst movie accents.
15. Gabourey Sidibe, 'Tower Heist' (2011)
Playing a maid with a knack for cracking safes, Sidibe didn't initially plan on her character having a Jamaican accent. But "Tower Heist" director Brett Ratner requested it, and even with the use of a dialect coach,...

Although Sylvester Stallone has asked a lot of action stars to help out with his “Expendables” franchise, one guy who has managed to elude his grasp is Steven Seagal. Since the “Out for Justice” star comes with a far amount of baggage, getting him to agree to anything can be difficult. This stuff tends to happen when your ego outweighs your worth. But, I digress. Stallone previously mentioned that Seagal was out of the running for “The Expendables 3,” much to the dismay of the guy writing this article. However, Sylvester suggested in a tweet earlier today that he’s still hoping the big guy will sign on for the upcoming sequel. Stop teasing us, Seagal! Just do the job, already. Sheesh. ….Calling Seagal this morning. — Sylvester Stallone (@TheSlyStallone) May 17, 2013 Could this mean that Stallone is still trying to get Seagal for the project? Could be. Or maybe he just...

So I’m only to happy to give a plug to a contest thats happening on Facebook, to tie in with Deadly Crossing that’s just being released on Redbox. You can win yourself a whole host of cool Seagal stuff! In exchange for posting their best Steven Seagal action pose, fans earn the chance to win an Aikidogi, Mma fight gloves, or a wooden bokken signed by Seagal. Steven Seagal does not hold back when it comes to on-screen martial-arts action, as has been demonstrated by his show True Justice and the wince-inducing beatdowns that it features every week. But it turns out that we weren't the only ones interested in documenting Seagal's epic bone-crunching moves, because the kids over at FilmDrunk put together a supercut that documents every time a low-life baddie's bone has been broken in a Seagal movie. The total number of broken bones is remarkable, and it definitely convinces us to stay on Steven's good side.

When the two old buddies got together to launch a fitness drive in Moscow, Seagal was forced to act as bodyguard when the Russian president was mobbed by schoolchildren
The only surprise about Steven Seagal visiting a Moscow martial arts school with Vladimir Putin is that people are surprised. As Lost in Showbiz never tires of pointing out, the guy is the most versatile celebrity of the age. Not only is he the star of numerous world cinema classics, but he has been formally recognised as a reincarnated lama. (Well done, Buddhism!) He is credited with teaching a signature face-kick to two major Mma stars, and, in the wake of the Sandy Hook massacre, is currently training armed posses of dubious volunteers to defend Arizona schools, whether they like it or not. Five On Film is an occasional feature on “Hey You Geeks!!” where directors, writers, actors or just plain awesome advocates of geek culture are asked five questions in line with the theme of their current work. In this edition, I chat about action films and Arnold Schwarzenegger with The Last Stand screenwriter Andrew Knauer.
Knauer wrote The Last Stand to celebrate the action film as it should be; explosive, witty and R rated. Once it was chosen to be the vehicle for Arnold Schwarzenegger’s return to top billed action star, the film quickly became one of the most anticipated of 2013. The Last Stand has already received some promising pre-release praise for its 80′s action sensibilities and use of practical effects. Ahead of its release this Friday, I asked Knauer to speak about his favorite action films and what it means to have action’s most iconic star cast in his film.

I’m a huge Steven Seagal fan, and have been for most of my life at this point. Films like “Out For Justice”, “Under Siege”, and “Hard to Kill” rank among my all-time favorites, and with a scarce few exceptions, I’ve seen every movie the man has made. Even with these qualifications, it’s getting harder and harder to watch the man’s new work. Over the last few years he’s become a bloated caricature of his former self, and nowhere is that more evident than in his new direct-to-video offering, “Maximum Conviction”. “Maximum Conviction”, or “MaxCon” as it will henceforth be known, is another in a long line of recent Seagal films where the title combines two words that sound tough, but that mean nothing and have little connection to the actual film. It’s also another in a troubling line of films with lackluster fight scenes.

This week’s “Question of the Week” on Jeff Bayer’s “Movie B.S.” podcast is inspired by Lawless, a film about three good ‘ol boys (played by Shia Labeouf, Tom Hardy, and Jason Clarke) in Virginia’s Franklin County whose bootleggin’ ways in the 1930s are trifled by dirty cops and powerful competition. (I reviewed the film, and you can read that review here!)
This week’s inquiry is, “What is your favorite moment of law-breaking in a movie?”
In my attempt to answer this question, I’m going to choose scenes that are my favorite because of the impression they’ve left on me. Some of these law-breaking moments are fun, some are serious, and some of them are never responded to with justice. These are scenes that left an impact concerning the control of power (or lack thereof), while...

Chicago – Vern started his career as one of those snarky critics who wrote in to Harry Knowles’ landmark and influential movie website Ain’t It Cool News. He became a regular writer for the site and his work there turned him into a very unorthodox author. His first book was a fantastic examination of, believe it or not, the career of Steven Seagal. Newly updated with a dozen new chapters about the recent adventures of his subject matter (the first printing was in 2008), “Seagalogy: A Study of the Ass-Kicking Films of Steven Seagal” is a funny, clever read for fans of the unusual action star and those who have never seen one of his movies. Vern’s movie-loving, smart, enjoyable writing makes this a more entertaining experience than Seagal himself has ever produced.
Don’t worry. This is not tongue-in-cheek nonsense. To say that Vern takes his subject matter seriously would be a Massive understatement.

You're getting too old for this: 25 years ago, on March 6, 1987, "Lethal Weapon" was released. The buddy-cop thriller not only cemented Mel Gibson's status as a household name after playing good-natured loose-canon (as opposed to now) Martin Riggs, but also created a social phenomenon still relevant to this day: "I'm getting too old for this shit."
The catchphrase, said numerous times throughout the "Lethal Weapon" series by Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover), has appeared in many movies over the last 25 years, often times in reference to the put-upon police detective himself. (The recent trailer for "Men In Black 3" features Will Smith uttering a PG variation on Murtaugh's famous one-liner.)
What you might not know? That "Lethal Weapon" wasn't the first film to utilize some form of the defeated turn-of-phrase. From "North by Northwest" and "The Sting" to Murtaugh himself, enjoy a mash-up of movie characters getting too old for this.

John Flynn's Rolling Thunder is finally out on DVD. He may not have made enough films, says John Patterson, but when he did, the script came first
John Flynn's Rolling Thunder (1977), available this week for the first time on DVD, takes you back to a time when Hollywood still made grown-up medium-budget thrillers like Charley Varrick, Mr Majestyk or Jackson County Jail. Flynn died in 2007 and never made enough movies; this one reminds us how good he was.
Rolling Thunder was written by Paul Schrader and – like Sydney Pollack's The Yakuza, written by Schrader and his brother Leonard – it signposts themes and imagery that would obsess Schrader in his own movies: Vietnam veterans, samurai ethics, and orgasmic explosions of cathartically violent revenge. Oh, and horribly mutilated hands. POWs Rane (William Devane) and Voden (Tommy Lee Jones) return to Texas after years of torture in a Hanoi prison.

Scorsese's Costume Designer Dies
Martin Scorsese's longtime costume designer Richard Bruno has died at the age of 87.
He passed away on 11 January in Port Townsend, Washington after suffering kidney failure, reports Variety.
Bruno began his career behind-the-scenes in the 1960s and went on to work on films including Roman Polanski's Chinatown and The Way We Were before forging a longtime collaborative partnership with Scorsese.
He worked with the famed director on movies including Raging Bull, New York, New York, The King of Comedy and The Color of Money and he won a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) award for his costumes in Goodfellas.
Bruno also spent many years working with Scorsese's star Robert De Niro on films including The Untouchables, Guilty by Suspicion and Night and the City. He also worked on The Karate Kid and Steven Seagal's Out for Justice, Under Siege and Under Siege 2.

Having failed to win the poster round at the Den of Geek Quiz, Matt takes inspiration from Steven Seagal’s detective movie, Out For Justice...
Last week I attended the Den of Geek pub quiz. It was a great event and, if you’ve never been, I’d advise attempting to get along to any future ones that might take place. They’re a wonderful place to find a good time, good people and, if you’re a hungry vampire, the blood of many, many virgins.
They’re also, unfortunately, a terrible place to find justice. While I make no complaints about the main quiz (which I’m reliably informed was judged entirely fairly), the bonus round poster competition was a corrupt sham. I should explain.

Blu-ray Review
The Magnificent Seven
Directed by: John Sturges
Cast: Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Eli Wallach, Charles Bronson, Horst Buccholz
Running Time: 2 hrs 8 mins
Rating: PG
Due Out: August 2, 2011
Plot: Seven cowboys are put under contract to protect a town from a destructive bandit named Calvera (Wallach).
Who’S It For?: Fans of classic westerns have probably already seen it, but likely not to this quality. Even individual fans of Charles Bronson or Steve McQueen will enjoy seeing the younger versions of these future action stars. Newcomers to the movie looking for a “Red Dead Revolver”-like action will be rewarded with something bigger, and more meaningful.
Movie:
It doesn’t take a film historian to see that The Magnificent Seven is a special moment in Hollywood, with its alignment of future stars and the whole franchise that it kicked off. This movie alone can stand as a highly entertaining western,...

The crew of an offshore oil rig unwittingly disturb a creature which makes its way on to the rig and quickly starts to work its way through the crew. A tropical storm has hit, which caused most of the crew to be evacuated. Can the remaining few, with communications cut off, survive until the storm breaks and help arrives?
*****
An initial word of warning about that poster. The creature that is on the loose in this film bears no resemblance to that set of jaws. The poster makes it look like some sort of leviathan is surfacing to swallow the rig whole, whereas what we actually have is a man in a black suit, filmed in snapshots and at quirky angles to make it look like, well, something other than a guy in a black suit. This is basement-budget film-making of the first order, with all of the problematic connotations...

He's one of the film industry's greatest treasures, and if he wants to play the emperor of the Mongol hordes, who are we to stop him?
To happier places, now, with news of Lost in Showbiz untouchable Steven Seagal. Round here, any criticism of Seagal is punishable by broken wrist, while those of you who fail to respect his cinematic canon also risk being thrown through a window, or dispatched using an improvised weapon such as a pool ball in bar towel (Out For Justice) or a microwave (Under Siege).
Now that's done, our business today is with eternally doomed movie-star vanity projects. The second greatest of these is obviously Vin Diesel's multi-gazillion-dollar Hannibal epic, which will see the radioactively dim star of the Fast and Furious franchise assume the mantle of one of the greatest military commanders of all time, just so long as shortsighted movie producers stop passing on the idea.

The popularity that continues to this day of Steven Seagal can be directly pointed at and summed up on his first four films. Usually playing cold, calculating tough guys that disobey their superiors to get the job or justice done, Seagal’s films were perfectly paced bone-snapping action films, that within these first few films established him as an action star along the sides of Sly Stallone, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, who dominated the box office at that time in the early 1990s. Also of note, is that these films were related by their three word titles, something of which inspired this retrospective’s name.
