Bridget Jones’s Baby has been a long time cooking. The last movie – the ropy The Edge of Reason – was 12 years ago, and talk of a third has been around since around 2009. Gestation was bumpy. Paul Feig and then Peter Cattaneo were on board to direct, but the role went to Sharon Maguire, who did the first one. In 2013, Colin Firth braced fans for a “long wait”, and the following year Hugh Grant said he was out, based on his dislike for Helen Fielding and David (One Day) Nicholls’s script.

Welcome to another “Preview Reel” column, where we look at the week’s upcoming wide release movies. This week sees one of the most controversial releases of the year, Ghostbusters. There’s been a lot of online chatter about this movie, unfortunately most of it has been negative. Is all of the negativity deserving? Let’s break it down and see.
Ghostbusters
What we are excited about:
Paul Feig has been one of the better comedy directors of the past decade. With hits like Bridesmaids (2011), The Heat (2013), and Spy (2015) under his belt, Feig has also developed strong chemistry with Melissa McCarthy, who is one of the stars in this reboot. The common thread among Feig’s recent comedy blockbusters is that he is able to take stereotypical and cliché concepts and make them feel fresh. He has conquered the wedding, buddy-cop, and spy genres, let’s see if he can...

Universal and Working Title have been ruminating over Bridget Jones’ Diary 3 for nigh on a decade at this point, with the last major false start occurring in 2011 when Bridesmaids‘ Paul Feig was circling the long-gestating sequel.
Fast forward to 2015, however, and Deadline brings the first tangible sign that the threequel is moving forward, and it’s even snatched up its first major star in former Grey’s Anatomy crooner Patrick Dempsey. Has the hapless singleton finally found her McDreamy at last? You know it can’t be that simple.
Renée Zellweger is understood to be back on board for Bridget Jones’ Diary 3, alongside Colin Firth’s long-time love interest Mark Darcy. One former cast member who won’t be back for another bout of rom-com goodness, though, is Hugh Grant, who decided to forego another installment. And after The Edge of Reason, can you really blame him?
Nevertheless, Bridget Jones...

Few screenwriters burst onto the film scene with as much creative capacity as Charlie Kaufman, the mind behind Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. However, the scribe has kept a low profile since directing 2008′s Synecdoche, New York. Despite murmurs about helming the musical comedy Frank or Francis with Jack Black, Kaufman could not get that project off the ground.
Alas, fans of his brainy, soulful, surreal works of comedy can finally breathe easy, as FX has just picked up a new half-hour comedy pilot from Kaufman, entitled How and Why. Michael Cera and John Hawkes are already signed on to appear in the pilot, which Kaufman will write, direct and executive produce.
With a screenwriter as renowned and imaginative as Kaufman behind the project, as well as his eye behind the lens, the main story is not “who” is in How and Why, but “what” is the plot synopsis?...

Production on Charlie Kaufman's crowdfunded Anomalisa — an animated short about a depressed motivational speaker — started last November. While we wait to see more of the project, let's turn our attention to an announcement from FX (via Vulture) that the director is developing a half-hour comedy for the network called How and Why. The sitcom will be focused on an idiot savant-type character that knows everything about nuclear reactors and nothing about life. So far, we know that Kaufman will write, direct, and executive-produce the pilot, but no other details exist at this time. This isn't Kaufman's first time at the TV rodeo. The neurotic scribe started his television comedy career with shows like Get a Life, The Dana Carvey Show, The Edge...

Screenwriter Charlie Kaufman (of Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind fame) is returning to the television medium, which is where he began his professional career by writing for series like Get a Life, The Edge and The Dana Carvey Show back in the 1990s. This decision was, at least partly, motivated by his planned sophomore directorial effort Frank or Francis hitting a $nag during pre-production.
Kaufman was developing a comedy series for Catherine Keener to headline last year, but that HBO project is either dead or stuck in development at this point. Fortunately, the eccentric storyteller is now working on another TV venture, in the shape of a half-hour FX comedy series titled How and Why.

Watching the trailer for Wanderlust – the new movie directed by Wet Hot American Summer director David Wain – makes me want to watch every episode of The State all over again. In short, I wanna dip my balls in it. Starring Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston as rat-racers in New York who have to leave the race and find themselves learning the communal life, the trailer looks knock-down, drag-out hilarious. Some great gags from some truly disturbed/gifted comic minds are on display here. Check it out for yourself, and see how many State alumni you can spot: There’s Wain behind the camera of course, and there’s Joe Lo Truglio, Kerri Kenney, Ken Marino (trying to dip his balls into Aniston’s character), and with any luck, Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter, Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon will make their way onto the screen as well. At any rate, it...

Somewhere along the line, a third Bridget Jones film has apparently gone from being a vaguely mooted development-hell project, to an actively going concern on its way into production at Universal. Deadline are reporting that Bridesmaids director Paul Feig has just withdrawn from the movie, which means that Universal and Working Title will need a new helmer Asap if the plan is really to start shooting Bridget Jones 3 in January.Despite Bridget being played by Renee Zellweger in the Diary (2001) and The Edge of Reason (2004), the series seems to be viewed as quintessentially British in Hollywood, which is the issue Feig cited for his departure: he apparently feels he has the wrong comedy sensibility. The material he was dealing with isn't yet clear: there is no third Helen Fielding book on which to base a screenplay, although Fielding did continue Bridget's columns in The Independent beyond the two novels, and...

Few mainstream actresses’ have suffered such an almighty fall as Renee Zellweger over the past five years. After becoming a genuine Hollywood star with her career defining role as Bridget Jones ten years ago (picking up an Oscar nomination in the process, rare for a romantic comedy) she then went on to become a heavyweight of the Awards season fare – picking up another nom for the musical Chicago and then finally winning the Golden statue for Cold Mountain in the two years that followed.
She followed that up with another great turn in Cinderella Man (2005) but then the wheels suddenly came off for her, leading to some dreadful choices which she has not been able to recover from. The National Society of Film Critics hailed the animated documentary "Waltz With Bashir" as the best picture of 2008 on Saturday.
The last of the major critics groups to weigh in with a selection of the year's best, the National Society's choice confirmed the rising status of animated films. Last month, the Los Angeles Film Critics' Assn. singled out "Wall-E" as its best picture of the year. And "Wall-E" also tied with the British comedy "Happy-Go-Lucky" for runner-up status in the National Society's best picture voting.
Directed by Ari Forman and released by Sony Pictures Classics, "Bashir" centers on the Israeli war with Lebanon in 1982.
"Happy-Go-Lucky," a Miramax release, walked off with the most awards, though. Mike Leigh's portrait of a blithe spirit and the effects she has on those around her earned Leigh both best director and best screenplay honors. Sally Hawkins, as its upbeat central character, was named best actress,...

The trio of New York Times critics (Manohla Dargis, A.O. Scott and Stephen Holden) have weighed in with their own nominations for the year's best in movies with their selections for Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress and Original and Adapted Screenplays. Quickly glancing through the list I see Manohla Dargis loved Charlie Kaufman's Synecdoche, New York (at least the acting) and is the only one that gave The Dark Knight any love. Thankfully Slumdog Millionaire wasn't "nominated" for anything other than a lone Adapted Screenplay notice from A.O. Scott. Happy-Go-Lucky saw plenty of attention and believe it or not, there isn't one film all three could agree on for Best Picture with Wall-e and Happy-Go-Lucky being the front-runners as they were mentioned twice - Dargis was the main reason for this as her selections didn't show up on either Stephen Holden or A.

Del Toro Was Autograph Hunters' Favourite At Toronto Film Festival
Actor Benicio Del Toro has been crowned the fans' favourite autograph signer at the recent Toronto Film Festival in Canada - because he never turned a devotee away.
The Oscar winner was at the event for the premiere of his new movie The Argentine, in which he plays the lead role of Marxist revolutionary Ernesto 'Che' Guevara.
And he delighted fans by staying on the red carpet until he had signed an autograph for every fan.
Website tiff.shovine.com writes about Del Toro: "The Che star was almost everywhere during his few days in Toronto - late nights and early mornings. But Del Toro never refused to sign. When one autograph collector mentioned that Benicio did 21 photos in a row at one stop for him - he was crowned our Tiff .08 signing champ."
Eastern Promises star Viggo Mortensen, Rose McGowan, Gerard Butler and Kate Beckinsale were also credited for taking the time out to sign autographs for fans.
But others were named and shamed by the site - Led Zeppelin legend Jimmy Page was blasted for failing to make an effort to please his many fans.
Of Page, the website says, "Disappointing for many, considering Page was the one autograph everybody wanted.
