Responsible for one of the most iconic horror novels (and films…and posters!) of all time, The Exorcist author William Peter Blatty has passed away at age 89. Blatty started as a scriptwriter with credits including the Blake Edwards comedy A Shot In The Dark and (uncredited) The Omega Man. He adapted his 1971 best-seller The Exorcist for the screen in 1973, which resulted in his Oscar win for ‘Best Adapted Screenplay’. In 1980, he directed an unusual film I saw at the theater then, but have never seen since. The Ninth Configuration, an odd allegory starring Stacey Keach and Neville Brand about a remote castle that served as an insane military asylum, deserves to be rediscovered. In 1996, he wrote and directed The Exorcist III, based on his novel Legion. Just last year, the director’s cut of the film, now titled The Exorcist III: Legion, was released on Blu-ray. Blatty had a type of blood cancer.

An American television classic is about to get a fresh remix for a new generation.

One Day at a Time, the groundbreaking Norman Lear sitcom about a divorced mother of two, is being rebooted for Netflix, with season one premiering on Jan. 6. The show, which originally ran for nine seasons between 1975 and 1984 with stars Bonnie Franklin, Mackenzie Phillips, Valerie Bertinelli and Pat Harrington Jr., is now set in Los Angeles with Justina Machado and Rita Moreno as the matriarchs of a three-generation Cuban-American family.

It’s time to move on, and what better way than Will discovering Sonny’s deep dark secret.

Sonny comes in to the club, and Will tells him he’s been filling Abby and Ben in on the terms of Gabi’s plea deal. Will asks Abby if she’s upset that Julie didn’t get her way and send Gabi to prison for life, and Abby says no, she just doesn’t know what to think since she found out what Gabi did to Melanie. Will says “What did Gabi do?” and Sonny looks like he’s going to crap his pants.

Hope tells Rafe that there’s still one last issue they need to deal with before they close Gabi’s case. Somewhere Sonny just peed a little.

Abby tells Will and Sonny the Hot Stalker Andrew story, and is surprised that Will didn’t already know about it.

“I know you didn’t kill Nick … because I did that.”

Gabi rushes and tells Will “I know you didn’t kill Nick. because I did.” Hey, what happened to the “That” at the end? It completely loses all its impact without the “That!”

Sami, Lucas, Will and Sonny enter the conference room, and Sami tells Will she can’t believe he would be willing to go to prison for Gabi.

That was really uncomfortable to watch. It’s so difficult to see Robbie clearly afraid of Will, wondering what will set him off and make Will go from holding him to hitting him. Will is acting like Robbie should just get over it and that some flowers will solve the problem without actually addressing it.

And it’s tough to see Robbie scramble to explain to his friends how he hurt himself and then have to fearfully make Will understand that he never told anyone what really happened. This situation has established a pattern at this point, everything is fine, Will loses his temper and hits Robbie, Will does something to make amends and things are peaceful... for awhile.

But now Robbie is obviously aware that Will’s abuse isn’t just a one off or a mistake, but something that could happen...

I couldn't resist an invitation to the Gay & Lesbian Elder Housing (Gleh) Golden Globes viewing party thanks to the presence of its Lifetime Achievement Award honoree Julie Newmar, the Tony-winner and original Catwoman on TV's Batman, and "Black and Gold" dance artist Sam Sparro, who performed at the event's venue, The Jim Henson Theatre in Hollywood. Homeland bested drama contenders Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad, Downton Abbey, Mad Men and Game of Thrones for the Outstanding Drama series honor. The show's leading man Damian Lewis pleasantly surprised the room with an Outstanding Lead Actor win over tough competitors Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire), Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey) and Michael C. Hall (Dexter). "I'm one of those pesky Brits, apologies," he said, acknowledging his fellow nominees and the Homeland cast members that he likes "to dine with."

Septuagenarian pop star Cliff Richard was (typically) seeing life through rose-tinted shades when he starred in Summer Holiday, back in 1963. Most Brits heading off to Europe this month won’t be travelling in an old London double-decker, like clean-cut Cliff and his pals in Peter Yates’s musical. They’ll be joining long queues at the airport; muttering about the extortionate price of petrol; or praying that Eurostar doesn’t grind to a shuddering halt on this side of the Channel.

Not even "health and personal issues" can keep Steve Stifler down. Seann William Scott signed on to reprise the party animal character in another American Pie, to begin shooting in just weeks, despite entering treatment, his agent confirms to People. Scott, 34, is reportedly set to join Jason Biggs and Eugene Levy for another piece of Pie, and Thomas Ian Nicholas, Tara Reid, Chris Klein, Mena Suvari and Jennifer Coolidge are in negotiations to return. When I was a young kid, my father sat me down one day and said, “Okay, now I’m going to teach you about comedy.” Without hesitation he pulled two movies out – Blake Edwards’ A Shot in the Dark (his personal favorite, and mine too) and The Party. Even at that young age I found both films highly entertaining, and over the years I’d fall in with so many of Blake Edwards’ films – from the iconic Breakfast at Tiffanys to Victor/Victoria to Blind Date. Edwards was a master at physical comedy and deadpan delivery; his comedy hit on all cylinders, so much so that films today are still borrowing bits and pieces of his best stuff.
