The deaf-mute character Gabriella was based upon a real little girl, a fan of the show who had died during its first season.
The opening theme to the show is a combination of the songs "Part of Your World", "Under the Sea", and "Kiss the Girl". The overture for the upcoming stage musical of The Little Mermaid will be similar to this.
As well as due to Jason Marin's voice deepening, and due to the death of Ben Wright, Buddy Hackett and Christopher Daniel Barnes were the only voice actors for The Little Mermaid (1989) that didn't reprise their roles for the television series.
The TV series adaptation takes place before the film.
Jamie Mitchell was chosen as the main producer and director for this television series. He had previously worked on several Disney animated television series, including "Adventures of the Gummi Bears", "DuckTales", "The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh", and "TaleSpin".
