He spent 17 years as an advertising copywriter and creative director before he broke through at age 42 with the 1974 publication of The Bastard, the first of eight paperbacks under the umbrella known as The Kent Family Chronicles. Those books, which depicted American history through the lives of a fictional clan, were written to capitalize on the U.S. bicentennial celebrations that peaked in 1976.

Four years into the original 10-season run of CBS’s “Murphy Brown,” series creator Diane English developed a second sitcom for the network entitled “Love & War.” Although it only lasted three seasons, it did garner six Primetime Emmy nominations and two wins for Best Comedy Guest Actress. Tracey Ullman first triumphed in 1993 for a spot as an old flame of lead character Jack Stein (Jay Thomas), and Eileen Heckart prevailed one year later following two appearances as Stein’s mother. This was the fourth time that Heckart had contended for this award after earning two bids for “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and one for “The Cosby Show.”

From “Hacks” and “Only Murders in the Building” to “Barry” and “Abbott Elementary,” we’re living in a golden age of comedy. While a few shows have been dominant at the Emmys lately, racking up nominations left and right, predicting the best comedy performances can still prove to be a difficult task. Case in point: Best Comedy Guest Actress.

This year, four of the slots in the category went to actresses from HBO Max’s hit comedy “Hacks,” about a legendary comedienne and her protégé. Apple TV+’s soccer-themed kindness explosion “Ted Lasso” and Hulu’s murder mystery-slash-true crime satire “Only Murders in the Building” fill the remaining two spots. But who will actually win?

Currently, Jane Lynch of “Only Murders” leads the field with 37/10 odds, and two Experts and eight Editors predicting her to win. She’s followed by Laurie Metcalf, Dame Harriet Walter, Harriet Sansom Harris, Jane Adams and Kaitlin Olson.

Spoiler Alert: The following reveals major plot points from Wednesday night’s episode of The Wonder Years.

ABC’s The Wonder Years has a connection to the original 90s series, which was revealed in tonight’s episode titled “Love & War” and it was poignant. The scene can be viewed above.

In the episode, Dean’s (Ej Williams) big brother Bruce (Spence Moore II) has returned home from Vietnam injured and with a secret—he has a girlfriend and she’s an older woman. While convalescing at home, the family wanted to know everything about Tammy (Yvonne Orji), who is later revealed to be a divorced, single mom.

Things are moving fast between Bruce and Tammy, much to his mom Lilian (Saycon Sengbloh), and Dean’s chagrin. Dean isn’t ready to share his brother with Tammy’s son Joey, and he’s even less excited about being his babysitter.

In the above video, an injured Bruce rests in the hospital surrounded by his much-relieved family. But they are surprised to meet Tammy (played by Orji), who pops in from work with a tin full of his favorite cookies. And while Kim catches on quickly, it takes Lillian a moment to realize that this older woman is actually Bruce’s girlfriend. Cue the awkward pause.

Throughout TV history, many original series leads who left their posts have later returned for guest spots, including Farrah Fawcett (“Charlie’s Angels”), Ron Howard (“Happy Days”), and Steve Carell (“The Office”). While these special appearances typically delight fans, they rarely capture the attention of Emmy voters. To date, only four previously nominated stars have received guest bids for reprising their roles, with Claire Foy (“The Crown”) having just added her name to the list this year. If she is successful on this outing, she will be the first winner of both lead and guest acting prizes for the same role.

Three decades ago, Alfre Woodard became the first performer to be recognized for her return to a once lead-nominated role. As of now, Jean Smart is the only Best Comedy Guest Actress champ to successfully defend her title. A two-time nominee this year for “Hacks” and “Mare of “Easttown,” Smart won for her turn on “Frasier” in 2000 and 2001. Six other women have won the category multiple times, but not consecutively. Throughout his 50-year career, Robinson appeared in movies such as “Secret Santa,” “The River,” “Set It Off,” “Antwone Fisher,” “Jackson,” “Even Money” and “Miss Lettie and Me,” and TV series including “Buffalo Bill,” “Home Improvement,” “Mom,” “Hart of Dixie,” “NCIS” and “The Guestbook.”

Born in Houston, Robinson began his career as a theater actor and singer for R&b groups Archie Bell and the Drells and Southern Clouds of Joy. In the late 1960s, Charlie attended Chris Wilson’s acting school, Studio 7, at the Houston Music Theatre. He soon moved to Hollywood and began acting for the screen.

Emma Thompson has seven Emmy nominations and one win. That single victory came for her guest appearance on “Ellen” in 1998, and now, 21 years later, she could win that same category again and be just the eighth person to do so.

Thompson, who missed on a bid for “King Lear,” is up in Best Comedy Guest Actress for her hosting stint on “Saturday Night Live.” No one has won this category more than twice. The seven two-time champs are Colleen Dewhurst, Tina Fey, Kathryn Joosten, Cloris Leachman, Jean Smart, Tracey Ullman and Betty White.

Should Thompson prevail, she’d join an even more exclusive club with Dewhurst, Smart and Ullman as the only people with a perfect 2-for-2 record in the category. Dewhurst won for “Murphy Brown” in 1989 and ’91; Smart for “Frasier” in 2000-01; and Ullman for “Love & War” in 1993 and “Ally McBeal” in 1999.

Elmarie Wendel, who played the Solomon family’s landlord Mrs. Dubcek on “3rd Rock From the Sun,” has died. She was 89.

Wendel’s daughter confirmed her death on Instagram Saturday.

“#ripelmariewendel,” the post reads. “You were a great mom and a badass dame.”

Wendel’s “3rd Rock” co-star Jim Beaver remembered her on social media as well.

“She was raucous, funny, endearing, and terribly, terribly sweet,” he wrote. “Goodnight, Mrs. Dubcek, wherever you are.”

Beaver starred as Happy Doug on the series.

In addition to her role on “3rd Rock,” Wendel had credits on “Seinfeld,” “Love & War,” “Murphy Brown,” “Murder, She Wrote,” and “Empty Nest.” She also had a voice role in 2012’s Dr. Seuss adaptation “The Lorax” as Aunt Grizelda. Her most recent recurring role was on “George Lopez” from 2003-2007 as Gina.
