Few actors’ screen presence reverberates with such genuine intensity as Benicio del Toro. Like Gary Oldman, Denzel Washington, Toshiro Mifune, Mads Mikkelsen, and so on. I feel Benecio del Toro is almost always good, irrespective of the quality of the film built around his character. Born in Puerto Rico on February 19, 1967, to lawyer parents, Benicio del Toro was a basketball player in school. Benicio del Toro was studying business at the University of California, but his interest in acting soon made him drop out and study acting at the Stella Adler Conservatory with Arthur Mendoza. In the late 1980s, Benicio del Toro started appearing in TV shows like Miami Vice and Private Eye.
Benecio del Toro was recognized as a promising performer in his second movie role, where he played Dario, a vicious enforcer of a drug kingpin in Timothy Dalton’s James Bond movie License to Kill (1989). Though the...

Kevin Spacey, the Oscar-winning actor known for his roles in “American Beauty” and “The Usual Suspects,” is facing a new civil lawsuit in London, alleging sexual abuse.
The lawsuit was filed at London’s High Court on February 12, marking another legal challenge for the 65-year-old actor just over 18 months after he was acquitted of all charges in a high-profile criminal trial.
Details of the Lawsuit
The civil suit involves actor Ruari Cannon, who is suing Spacey along with two organizations connected to London’s Old Vic Theatre, where Spacey served as artistic director between 2003 and 2015.
Legal firm Fieldfisher, representing Cannon, confirmed the lawsuit but did not provide specific details of the allegations.
The lawsuit is separate from previous cases, as it does not involve any of the accusers from Spacey’s 2023 criminal trial.

To celebrate the Limited Edition 4K Uhd release of The Usual Suspects, we are giving away a 4K Uhd to a lucky winner!
The Usual Suspects won two Academy Awards and is still regarded as one of the greatest crime films ever made.
After a brutal massacre on a cargo ship off the coast of Los Angeles leaves 27 men dead, Special Agent Dave Kujan (Chazz Palminteri) interrogates one of the only two survivors, small-time con artist Verbal Kint (Kevin Spacey). During the interview, Kint tells Kujan of how he was recruited by the fearsome crime lord Keyser Söze to commit a series of daring heists with four other crooked misfits: Dean Keaton (Gabriel Byrne), Mike McManus (Stephen Baldwin), Fred Fenster (Benicio del Toro) and Todd Hockey (Kevin Pollak). But as Kint’s account of the events leading up to the massacre becomes more convoluted, Kujan becomes increasingly sceptical and determined...

There’s an entire subgenre of modern crime movies you might call “Heat Rashes” — those heist thrillers that worship at the altar of Michael Mann’s 1995 stone-cold classic. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and the best and most admiring of these Mann-handlers is, by a huge margin, 2018’s Den of Thieves. In the De Niro corner, you’ve got Pablo Schreiber as the leader of a bank-robbery crew who’s dreaming the impossible dream: ripping off the Federal Reserve in Los Angeles. Taking on the Pacino role, Gerard Butler...

Major spoilers for "Den of Thieves 2: Pantera" follow.
When "Den of Thieves" arrived in 2018, many described it as a kind of low-rent, dirtbag version of Michael Mann's "Heat." I, too, have said more or less the same thing about the film — but I say so lovingly. I'm a big fan of "Den of Thieves," a movie about big men firing big guns and featuring Gerard Butler as Big Nick O'Brien, a cop who always seems to be hungover no matter what time of day it is. Director Christian Gudegast's film was frequently derivative, and yet, it was also a total blast. I was excited when a sequel was announced all the way back in 2018, and now that the sequel, "Den of Thieves 2: Pantera," is here, I'm just as excited for what comes next.
While a third film hasn't been officially announced yet, "Den of Thieves 2...

Christian Gudegast's "Den of Thieves" shouldn't have worked. At a glance, the film appeared to be little more than a knock-off of Michael Mann's "Heat" and countless other cops-and-robbers thrillers. Indeed, the film is frequently derivative — not only does it owe a huge debt to "Heat," but it even throws in a last-minute twist shamelessly "borrowed" from "The Usual Suspects." And yet ... "Den of Thieves" inexplicably ruled. While no one could accuse the flick of being original, the end result was wildly entertaining and enjoyable, and I don't mean in a cynical "so bad it's good" sort of way. Violent, engaging, funny, and unapologetically brash, "Den of Thieves" is down and dirty stuff — a scuzzy, dirtbag action flick about angry men shooting loud guns. It's not high art, it's high trash, and I love it with all my heart.

Emma Scorpio-Drake’s surprise return to General Hospital just as 2024 drew to a close caught viewers by surprise. Not just because Emma looked different, now played by Braedyn Bruner after Brooklyn Rae Silzer had played her on and off for 13 years, but because she seemed to have gotten a personality transplant during her time in the Bay Area.
New Year, New Me
Gone was sweet, adorable, chip-off-exactly-the-way-her-mother-Robin-was-at-that-age-Emma, and in her place was snarky-snide-i’m-better-than-you-are-the-way-her-mother-came-off-to-some-viewers-while-pretending-to-be-sweet-and-adorable-Emma. She’d barely been in Port Charles for a few days before Emma locked horns with Joss (Eden McCoy). This leads us to wonder, are we seeing an epic new rivalry in the making?
More: Find out what happened on Gh.

In his nearly 50 years as film critic for the Chicago Sun-Times, Roger Ebert had a reputation for being lucid, passionate, and, when a film happened to rub him the wrong way, cranky. As seen in his weekly sparring sessions with the Chicago Tribune's Gene Siskel on their syndicated review show, Ebert could unleash withering invective at a film that wasted his time and/or insulted his intelligence. He was infamous for his hatred of the 1980s spate of slasher films, as well as his "How could they do this to Jennifer Jason Leigh" one-star pan of "Fast Times at Ridgemont High." Filmmakers were occasionally stung enough by his ire that they named characters after him who were snobby, mean-spirited, or downright monstrousness.
Ebert is, of course, hardly alone in this. Any critic whose job requires them to watch over 200 movies every year is going to need to blow off some steam from time to time.

The Usual Suspects has stood the test of time for having one of the greatest thriller twists in movie history. The 1995 crime movie starred some of the best actors at that time, including Gabriel Byrne, Pete Postlethwaite, and Kevin Spacey. The premise for the movie was "five guys who meet in a police line-up," but the story centers on a heist run from afar by a legendary crime lord, who turns out to be nearer than he appeared. The ending of The Usual Suspects contains an elaborate twist that almost eclipses the rest of the movie.
In The Usual Suspects, the timid and limping Roger "Verbal" Kint, played by Kevin Spacey, is telling the story to Agent Dave Kujan. Verbal's story is compelling and detailed, as he explains how each of the men had wronged the Turkish crime boss, Keyser Söze. Once Verbal has finished, Kujan allows him to...

Make-up design doesn’t always mean prosthetics or extremes — that’s why the Emmy Awards smartly single out contemporary make-up design as its own category. But too often, those more immediately arresting designs are the ones that get all the attention. Not anymore. Join IndieWire in celebrating the make-up artists creating subtle, character-specific work for contemporary characters with our series, “Making Up Is Hard to Do.”
Look, sometimes subtlety is for the weak.
“What We Do in the Shadows” has always been the rare delight of a comedy set in a contemporary setting that still gets to play with a cornucopia of mixed-up period details and fantastic monsters. It is as big and broad as it can be, in part because the comedy lives in its contrast between ordinary Staten Islanders and the Vampire Residence that has so fascinated us, and also, apparently, the Maysles brothers.

Beware, reader! There are spoilers ahead for the "What We Do in the Shadows" series finale, bleh bleh bleh!
Much like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Fargo," and "M*A*S*H," it didn't take long for the "What We Do in the Shadows" TV series to justify its existence, step out of its movie counterpart's shadow, and turn into one of the best comedies on television. For six seasons, the show has followed the misadventures of a group of horny and buffoonish vampires who had long given up their mission to conquer the new world and simply lead static lives of hijinks, as well as the quest of their familiar Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) to become a vampire despite discovering he has Van Helsing blood in him. Season 5 even had Guillermo finally turning into a creature of the night, only to realize that it was not for him and transform back into a human.

The What We Do in the Shadows vamps took a very meta trip down memory lane in this week’s series finale, as the documentary — and maybe the roommates’ time together — came to a close.
As Monday’s finale opens, Laszlo’s monster has become very, um, amorous and is chasing Nadja around the house — “This monster needs a bride,” Laszlo decides — and Nandor tries to sell Guillermo on his idea of them becoming masked crimefighters. (He’s mostly excited about getting an underground lair, which he’d access via a coffin elevator.) But suddenly, the documentary crew packs up their stuff and leaves.

Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers from Season 6, Episode 11 of “What We Do in the Shadows,” “The Finale,” which premiered Monday, Dec. 16 on FX.
The Staten Island vampires of “What We Do in the Shadows” have closed their coffins for good.
The final episode of Season 6 was the series finale of the FX comedy, which was originally a spinoff of the 2014 mockumentary written and directed by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi. Like so many irreverent sitcoms, it ended without many lessons learned and the promise of an eternity of hijinks to come, even after the cameras are turned off.
The episode begins with Guillermo (Harvey Guillén), the human familiar of the house, lamenting that the documentary team has shot enough footage and won’t need to visit the vampires’ home anymore. While the eternal bloodsuckers — Guillermo’s master Nandor (Kayvan Novak), Laszlo (Matt Berry), Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch...

Directed by Rian Johnson, Knives Out creates its own unique world and characters but is influenced by murder mysteries whodunnits that leave a lot of movies like Knives Out that fans can check out next. Knives Out was released in theaters in 2019 and was a huge success, earning 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and making $312 million at the box office, (via Box Office Mojo). Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is a private detective from the American South hired to investigate the death of the patriarch of a wealthy family.

Almost six years have gone by since Tom Cruise announced that Paramount Pictures had given the greenlight to two more Mission: Impossible movies, with Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015) and Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018) writer/director Christopher McQuarrie returning to the helm. At one point, we thought these movies were going to carry the titles Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two… but Paramount has backtracked from that decision. After Dead Reckoning Part One underwhelmed at the box office when it was released last year, the studio has dropped Part One from the subtitle and has let it be known that the next film, which is still in production, will have a different title. A decision they really should have made before releasing the first half of the story. At least we’re still getting the second half of the story, with the...

There are few films that can capture the forthcoming bad vibes of 2025 better than this one. Celebrating its 30th anniversary next year, David Fincher’s newly-remastered Se7en is returning to theaters. Scary Movie 6 is officially happening, and though no plot details have been revealed nor has the cast been announced yet, one character has been confirmed to return and it perfectly fits with the franchise's style. The Scary Movie saga started in 2000 and was created by the Wayans brothers: Keenen Ivory, Shawn, and Marlon, with the latter two starring in it as Ray and Shorty, respectively. Scary Movie arrived during the peak of slasher movies in the late 1990s and early 2000s, parodying these and other popular horror movies.

Roger Ebert was never afraid to go against the grain. While most critics loved films like A Clockwork Orange, Gladiator, The Usual Suspects and The Elephant Man, Ebert gave them a big thumbs down. It went the other way as well, though. Far Out Magazine recently noted a number of terrible movies that Ebert inexplicably loved, including three comedies that would be more at home at the Razzies than the Oscars.
Here are three terrible comedies that got kudos from arguably the greatest film critic of all time…
1 Home Alone 3
No Macaulay Culkin? No Chris Columbus? No problem for Ebert. “To my astonishment, I liked the third Home Alone movie better than the first two,” he wrote. “I’m even going so far as to recommend it.”

The Usual Suspects ending has gone down as one of the greatest twists in movie history and has added to the crime thriller's lasting legacy. The movie follows a group of criminals who work together on particular jobs, such as jewel heists and robberies, but their lives are put in grave danger when they're hired by the mysterious Keyser Sze. The job is a drugs raid on a docked ship, and Kobayashi, who is Sze's lawyer, blackmails the suspects into working the job based on all the times they've stolen from Sze.
The story is told from the perspective of Roger "Verbal" Kint (Kevin Spacey), one of the suspects and the only surviving member following the botched raid. He is being interrogated by U.S. Customs Agent Dave Kujan (Chazz Palminteri) in an office at a police station. The non-linear narrative of The Usual Suspects cuts between the intense interrogation...

There’s a quote from The Usual Suspects that I love – “The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he did not exist.” It perfectly encapsulates the mysterious (and menacing) nature of Keyser Söze, the enigmatic mastermind behind the film’s crime spree. In the film, everyone knows who Keyser Söze is – […]

Blockbuster films often feel like a sprint to the finish, with studios clamoring for ever-bigger explosions and more pulse-pounding plots. Tom Cruise, who has thrilled us for years as the indomitable superspy Ethan Hunt, now finds himself facing the unsettling possibility that his beloved Mission: Impossible franchise might be nearing its end.
Paramount is reportedly contemplating labeling this installment as the franchise’s swan song. Cruise, on the other hand, isn’t quite ready to hang up his spy gadgets just yet.

Adding to the intrigue is the staggering budget for Mi 8, which is estimated to be $400 million. This hefty financial commitment puts it in the same league as Avengers: Endgame.

Spoiler Warning: This story includes major plot details for the Marvel Studios limited series “Agatha All Along,” currently streaming on Disney+.
When Jac Schaeffer signs onto Zoom roughly 18 hours after the two-episode finale of her series “Agatha All Along” debuted on Disney+, she looks at once relieved and slightly queasy.
“From when it dropped to about an hour ago, I’ve been feeling pretty shaky,” the showrunner says with a laugh. “We dropped a lot of content — a lot of moments.”
Schaeffer isn’t exaggerating. The episodes, titled “Follow Me My Friend / To Glory at the End” and “Maiden Mother Crone,” are chockablock with surprise twists and revelations that upend the story of Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn), Billy Maximoff (Joe Locke) and the coven of women who venture with them onto the fabled Witches’ Road. For one thing, it turns out the Witches’ Road never really existed — until Billy unknowingly summoned it into being.

Few events in movies are more satisfying to an invested audience than a well-executed plot twist. Unfortunately, many movies, while great the first time around, can lose their appeal and become frustrating once the viewers already know about the dramatic reveal. Knowing the twist in advance can fully erase any dramatic tension that the film works tirelessly to build up. Therefore, filmmakers have to work extra hard to make sure that their plot twists not only significantly contribute to the overall story, but that they are captivating enough to still be enjoyed on a second watch.
Fortunately, many movies have twists so exciting, they can be watched over and over again without losing any of their punch. In fact, some twists actually manage to make films even more enjoyable the second time around. This is typically the case when the ultimate reveal has been carefully foreshadowed throughout the movie. These...

Showtime's Escape at Dannemora utilizes an exceptional cast to tell its true-crime story. The 2018 limited series is based on the 2015 Clinton Correctional Facility escape, which saw two men, Richard Matt and David Sweat, successfully break out thanks to the help of their shared prison-employee girlfriend, Joyce "Tilly" Mitchell. Showtime needed actors like Benicio del Toro, Patricia Arquette, Paul Dano, Bonnie Hunt, and more to bring these and other real-world characters to life.
Escape at Dannemora originally premiered on Showtime in 2018, but it has since come to Netflix, claiming a spot on the Top 10 In October 2024. The series, which was created by Brett Johnson and Michael Tolkin, was directed by actor Ben Stiller and explores the true events leading up to, during, and after the infamous 2015 prison break. Of course, any "based on reality" TV series requires some creative liberties, but with such an exceptional cast in Escape at Dannemora, it's...

Adrien Brody won an Oscar at the 2003 ceremony for his performance in “The Pianist.” Despite his impressive career, that film has brought him his only nomination. Things could change in early 2025 now that his latest film “The Brutalist” has him competing for Best Actor. An Oscars victory would add him into an exclusive club that currently just has seven members: performers to win two Academy Awards for their only two nominations.
Our Gold Derby odds for Best Actor currently have Brody tied for second place with Colman Domingo (“Sing Sing”) at 9/2 odds. Ralph Fiennes (“Conclave”) is out front in first place at 4/1 odds. We then have Timothee Chalamet (“A Complete Unknown”) at 6/1, Daniel Craig (“Queer”) at 21/2, Sebastian Stan (“The Apprentice”) at 16/1, and John David Washington (“The Piano Lesson”) at 30/1.

Rising star Minha Kim unveils her first lead performance since breaking out in AppleTV+’s prestige drama series Pachinko, playing a young woman accused of murdering a best-selling author in Chun Sun-young’s feature debut A Girl with Closed Eyes. Premiering at the Busan International Film Festival, the yarn unspools as a polished crime thriller bolstered by a raft of strong performances, not least from Kim and Choi Hee-seo, but ultimately let down by some wildly implausible plotting.
Set in South Korea’s provincial mountain region of Hongcheon, A Girl with Closed Eyes opens as a young woman calling herself Min-ju (Kim) is caught, smoking gun literally in hand, standing over the bloodied corpse of celebrated writer Jeong Sang-woo (Lee Ki-woo). Taken in for questioning, she claims that Jeong was responsible for an unsolved kidnapping case from 20 years earlier that serves as the inspiration for his hit novel. She also...

It's impossible to avoid spoilers all the time, but I am so pleased I was able to experience all of these films without the twist being spoiled. I adore twisty films that subvert expectations, but the downside is that many of these movies have their twists spoiled by enthusiastic fans. On top of this, when a movie with a twist really makes waves and stands out, it continues to be discussed for years to the point that the endings become common knowledge.
Movies like The Sixth Sense, Planet of the Apes, The Usual Suspects, and Return of the Jedi are all classic hits that feature a huge twist that most people are likely to know about, regardless of whether they've seen the movies. However, I have still...

After sharing a tease yesterday, Lionsgate has shared the first official trailer for their upcoming John Wick spinoff Ballerina, which stars Academy Award-nominee Ana de Armas in the lead role as a young assassin named Eve Macarro, who, after a tragedy, begins training in the ways of the Ruska Roma and plots her vengeance against those that wronged her family.
The film's official synopsis reads, "Taking place during the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, the film follows Eve Macarro (Ana de Armas) who is beginning her training in the assassin traditions of the Ruska Roma."
While the trailer does give us plenty of footage of the fan-favorite Cuban actress kicking all kinds of ass across the world, it wraps up with the most epic of cameos as the one-and-only Keanu Reeves reprises his iconic role as John Wick, a.k.a. Baba Yaga, and it looks like he'll...

There are three generally accepted rules for living a long and happy life. 1) You don’t spit into the wind. That’s really just common sense. 2) You don’t tug on Superman’s cape. 3) By God, if you really want to live a long life, you 100%, not under any circumstances, for any reason, F*ck with John Wick’s dog. We have all learned nothing good happens from making John Wick angry. While we’ve already had one spin-off of the successful franchise, the upcoming film Ballerina promises to take us even further into the crazy underworld of one of the most fascinating franchises to emerge in a long time.
Where Did Ballerina Come From?
This film began life way back in 2017 as a stand-alone film. Shay Hatten wrote an action script with a female lead called Ballerina. The lead would be a ballerina assassin who goes on a revenge killing spree.

Calling all dudes and dudes at heart: "Den of Thieves 2" just unleashed its first action-packed trailer. Clocking in at almost 3 full minutes, this sequel to 2018's action hit looks like just what the doctor ordered, provided your doctor wants you to eat fried cheese and chug PBRs. "Den of Thieves," written and directed by Christian Gudegast, was essentially "'Heat' for dirtbags" — a big, greasy pastiche of a bunch of far better crime thrillers that came before it. It was derivative, it was silly, it was kind of amazing. The common consensus about "Den of Thieves" is that its trash — and I agree, but I don't mean that in a mean-spirited way! I love trash, especially when it's handled with care, and Gudegast worked hard to craft a surprisingly entertaining shoot-em-up about cops and robbers.

The tragedy of being the most successful person on a job is that all eyes are trained on the star. For celebrities and filmmakers, that attention and scrutiny increases tenfold due to the nature of their profession. When it comes to Hollywood in the 1990s, Julia Roberts happened to be the most in-demand A-lister after the actress’s interminable acclaim after Pretty Woman.

Soon after, Roberts’ magical reputation spread like wildfire across Hollywood with filmmakers wanting to work with her in every upcoming project. The Blacklist remained one of the most popular shows on network television for the better part of a decade. Part of the reason for the show’s continued popularity, especially its longevity has to be lead star James Spader, who brought a sense of charm and wit to the criminal mastermind Raymond “Red” Reddington.
James Spader played the lead role in all ten seasons of The Blacklist (Credit: NBC).
Given Spader’s influence on the character and the series overall, it is hard to imagine anyone else in the role. As a result, it might shock some fans to learn that Spader wasn’t the original choice for the role of Red. Instead, Academy Award winners Kevin Spacey and Gary Oldman were the ideal picks for the role. Here is everything you need to know about the casting of Red in The Blacklist.

Christopher McQuarrie is easily one of the most commendable filmmakers in Hollywood’s entire entertainment industry, having helmed masterpieces such as the Mission Impossible film series. While his innumerable action works with Tom Cruise—like Top Gun: Maverick—are one thing, he has landed award-winning pieces in the crime/thriller genre as well.

The perfect example of this is his critically acclaimed thriller/crime piece with filmmaker Bryan Singer from 1995, The Usual Suspects. To say the least, the film granted him a BAFTA and an Academy Award for his admirable excellence. But it all may not have been possible had it not been for McQuarrie’s greatest stroke of genius in creating one of the best scripts ever!

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Cheerleaders Gone… Bank Robbing?
The year 2000 was the New Hollywood of cheerleaders in film. After years of movies in which teen girls with pom poms were reduced to one-note bitches and bimbos, Y2K saw the easy-to-stereotype athletes receive a sudden rush of cinematic respect with Peyton Reed’s instant classic “Bring It On.”
Starring Kirsten Dunst and Gabrielle Union, the story of a rivalry between two cheer squads combined an authentic love for the (extremely grueling) work of cheer captains with fun flirty comedy and a surprisingly intelligent depiction of cultural appropriation.

For over a decade, Kevin Spacey seemed untouchable. An acclaimed actor known for intense, calculating roles, he rose to become one of Hollywood’s most powerful figures. But behind the fame lay disturbing allegations, spoken only in whispers. In 2023, director Katherine Haywood set out to give those whispers a voice.
Haywood’s documentary series Spacey Unmasked shares the testimonies of ten men who encountered Spacey early in his career, through his Oscar-winning prime and beyond. Their experiences span four decades, from unknown stages to the biggest streaming hits.
