Characters depicted indulging in controversial activities such as Howard Hughes, J Edgar Hoover and Robert Kennedy were all dead. The series took great care to portray still living people such as Colin Powell, Norman Schwarzkopf and Carl Sagan in a positive light. Besides which it would be hard for them to argue that their portrayal could be taken seriously in a series about alien invaders.
