On the eve of April, Sony has announced the list of free games making their way to PlayStation Plus’ Instant Game Collection for next month in North America, which will include Tower of Guns and nordic adventure title, Never Alone.
As with previous months, April’s update will herald the release of two games per platform, and each of these titles will be available on PlayStation Store next Tuesday, April 7.
Entering the Instant Game Collection on April 7:
Tower of Guns (PS4, PS3) Never Alone (PS4) Dishonored (PS3) Aaru’s Awakening (PS3, PS4) Killzone: Mercenary (Ps Vita) MonsterBag (Ps Vita)
As a bonus addition, the Japanese publisher also noted that quirky platformer Woah Dave! will be available to download free of charge on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita for the month of April. Lab Zero Games’ Skullgirls Encore is this week’s addition to the PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection. Centring around the quest for the mysterious “Skull Heart,” Skullgirls is a 2D fighter that features a unique selection of combatants. The female centric roster includes an amnesia stricken schoolgirl wearing a symbiote named Samson, an immortal thief who can survive dismemberment, a shape shifting monster currently looking like a nun, and many other oddballs. The “Encore” upgrade released earlier this year added new stages and music, as well as balance tweaks for the fighters.
Skullgirls Encore will take the place of Brothers: A Tale Of Two Sons, which leaves the Instant Game Collection on May 20th alongside PlayStation Vita title Unit 13. So if you haven’t downloaded either of those titles yet, time is running out for you to do so.

Proving that not every weekly PlayStation Plus update can be a winner, Sony has announced that Plus subscribers will find that the Vita version of Plants vs. Zombies has been added to their Instant Game Collection when the PlayStation Store updates tomorrow evening.
On the surface this is a great deal, because Plants vs. Zombies is an awesome tower defense game that would normally cost you $10.49 on the Vita. In reality, there is a good chance that you already have several cheap versions it downloaded on some other game playing device, which makes this a bit of a let down.
Outside of Plants vs. Zombies, tomorrow’s PlayStation Plus update is going to be a dream come true for the tens of PlayStation Vita owners out there, as the following games will be heavily discounted for Plus members as part of the handheld’s Anniversary Sale:

Sony rolled out the final 2012 addition to the Instant Game Collection when the Psn updated earlier this week, revealing that the 8-bit throwback Retro City Rampage is now free to download on the PS3 and Vita for PlayStation Plus subscribers.
The only new addition to the PlayStation Store in this weeks update was the once-Xbox exclusive game Oddworld: Munch’s Oddysee HD. This launch is only for the PS3, however, the PlayStation Blog promised that the Vita version will arrive “early next year“.
Outside of the Instant Game Collection update and the release of Munch’s Oddysee, Sony’s Holiday Essentials Sale kept on trucking by providing a 30% discount — up to 50% off for PlayStation Plus members – on five additional titles; Duke Nukem Forever, Journey, Killzone 3 Multiplayer, Mafia II, and Mortal Kombat. The launch of Ps Vita earlier this year could only mean one thing: yes, it’s yet another platform for Activision to publish the Call of Duty series on. And that’s just what’s happening this year with Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified, portable counterpart to the upcoming Black Ops II.
Details on the game have so far been few and far between, but it looks like this definitely won’t be a straight port. Which can only be a good thing – who wants to just buy the same game again? – but hopefully this won’t mean a scaled back experience, particularly with what the Vita is capable of.
Early screens and trailers of Black Ops Declassified indicated a limited Call of Duty experience, with only 4v4 online multiplayer and restricted graphical capabilities. Luckily, it seems the game was still early in the development stage at that point,...

Gamers in the United States have had the option of picking up a 3G-enabled PlayStation Vita for several months now, but Canada has been limited just to the Wi-Fi-only model, until now. Today, Sony’s Canadian division has confirmed that the 3G-capable Vita will hit store shelves up north on October 2.
Rogers Communications will provide the service to customers, enabling them to use social apps like Facebook and Flickr or use the system’s web browser even when away from an access point. The console will retail for $299.99, and include download vouchers for Gravity Rush and Unit 13. Two plans will be available. Capcom plans to take you for yet another ride with the iPhone and iPod Touch version of the classic fighting game next week.
For those keeping score at home, that's seven platforms including arcades that Marvel vs. Capcom 2 has made its way onto in the nearly decade and a half since its initial release. Not bad for a game that, for a while, was running for upwards of $100 or more for a way out of print disc copy.
While details are scarce in this morning's announcement, the publisher promises that MvC2 will remain faithful to its console and arcade counterparts. The entire roster of characters from the original will be making their way over to the iPhone and iPod Touch along with the tag team action. What a difference a second analog stick makes when you're developing a shooter for a handheld. The PSP, long vexed by its single stick and face button combination may have been able to make due in third-person run-and-gun titles like Syphon Filter or even the last handheld Socom entry, but that's all those games were really doing: making due with the limitations of the platform.
Now we have Unit 13, the swan song from developer Zipper Interactive. Free of the one-stick purgatory, is this shooter a real tier-one operator, or simply a mercenary experience?
The Basics
There's not a lot of story to the challenge and multiplayer-focused Unit 13, but what there is of it involves you playing as a merc dropped into hotspots where you must take out high priority targets (i.e. kill some guys), as well as collect intel or sabotage enemy assets. This isn't really the...

From a story put forward by the Japanese Times it looks as though Sony is getting ready to lay off 6% of its workforce by the end of the year. That equates to 10,000 people losing their jobs. The report claims that this comes from Sony Corporation wanting to act to regain global competitiveness.
The Nikkei business daily report stated that,
” in addition to slashing 5,000 jobs as part of a reorganization of its businesses for small and medium-size display panels and noncore chemicals, which has already been announced, Sony will cut another 5,000 globally.”
There is no evidence at the moment that these cuts will affect any of Sony’s gaming divisions. However Sony has already lost two first party studios this year. BigBig Studio was closed down in January where as earlier this month Zipper Interactive, the creators of Mag, Socom and Unit 13 was also shuttered.

Sony officially announced they would be shutting down one their first party studio Zipper Interactive. The studio was best known for Mag and the Socom series. As part of what Sony is describing as "a result of a normal cycle of resource re-alignment within Sce," the publisher has closed its first-party developer Zipper Interactive. Zipper is responsible for the Socom series of shooters as well as Sony's massively multiplayer shooter, M.A.G., and most recently, the Vita release Unit 13.

The Game Group officially went into administration yesterday and with this action came the immediate closure of 277 of its 609 outlet stores across the UK and Ireland. This series of closures will mean 2104 people will be out of a job. Below we have the complete list of the stores in both the UK and Ireland that will no longer be with us, as reported by Retail Week.

Chicago – When I had my hands-on experience with Sony’s PlayStation Vita a few weeks before its release, one of the most interesting new games was Sony’s “Unit 13,” the first shooter for the platform. It seemed to make a perfect fit for the new system as it blended traditional expectations of the third-person shooter genre with touch screen functionality and an emphasis on online play. Now that I’ve spent some time with the game at home, it still features a number of those strengths but some weaknesses of the system drag it down. It’s a good start but there’s definite room for improvement when it comes to shooters on the Vita.

Assassin’s Creed dominates a relatively unexciting update on the PlayStation Store, as Revelations becomes available for a not-so-cheap price of £35.99. PlayStation Plus owners will be happy, however, as they get to buy the game for half-price that price but only until next Monday. It’s true, Solid Snake has apparently lost his touch in Hideo Kojima’s most recent installment. Failing to find a home on the UK all formats top 40 chart, it has effectively been beaten out by seven older 3Ds titles.
With the only titles debuting on the top 40 chart being Mass Effect 3 at No.1, Street Fighter X Tekken at No.3, The Sims 3: Showtime at No.6, and Unit 13 at No.15, there was no shortage of game purchasing recently. Falling behind titles such as Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land, it leaves us to ponder what happened to our beloved Solid Snake?
Despite a great mix of reviews including an average Metascore of 80 from a total of 24 reviews, the game still fell short. Could this be a falling out of popularity for the title, or more a result of the platform it’s on?

Created exclusively for PlayStation Vita (Ps Vita) by Zipper Interactive and available via the PlayStation Store or from all good retailers from today, Unit 13 is a third-person military shooter that takes advantage of all the input and connectivity features Ps Vita has to offer. Dual analogue sticks offer bona fide shooter controls on the go, and Sixaxis combines with front and rear touch to offer an intuitive, immersive experience. Plus… the 3G connectivity of Ps Vita are at the core of Unit 13 and bring all-new challenges and ways of playing to the genre.
Players join the ranks of Unit 13, a counter-terrorism squad deployed with only one objective; complete the mission. Missions focus on contemporary ‘ripped from the headlines’ scenarios creating an experience that is loaded with authenticity. Missions are concise, intense, and non-linear, allowing for a huge variety of approaches depending on the player’s favoured style.

A shorter, maybe a little shallower update this week: like a lot of you I spent last night digging into Mass Effect 3, and like a lot of you I'm paying for it today. Bioware's latest is out in the wild now, and while I've had about 20 hours with the game (excluding multiplayer, maybe another three there), I'm still building material for my final review. But buy all means, shout at us and let us know how you feel about the game after having it in your mitts for the last half day.
Hit the jump for highlights from this week's releases.

Each week we bring you news on what is being released into the gaming world…. So lets get it started! Kicking off this list of games which will be released 5th March – 11th March 2012 is:
Mass Effect 3 (PS3 / Xbox 360 / PC):
Not everyone will survive. An ancient alien race, known only as “Reapers”, has launched an all-out invasion leaving nothing but a trail of destruction in their wake. Earth has been taken, the galaxy is on the verge of total annihilation, and you are the only one who can stop them. The price of failure is extinction. You are Commander Shepard, a character that you can forge in your own image. You determine how events will play out, which planets to explore, and whom to form alliances with as you rally a force to eliminate the Reaper threat once and for all. How you wage this war is completely up...

Chicago – It feels like there’s a new must-have electronic toy every quarter. Do you have an iPad 2? iPhone 4S? Nintendo 3Ds? Whatever that obnoxious SuperBowl commercial with The Darkness was shilling? It can get exhausting, especially if you don’t have the expendable income to get them all. So why should you buy a Sony PlayStation Vita? Why get another toy if something else will simply replace it three months later? Having been lucky enough to get an exclusive, hands-on sneak preview of the Vita, I can tell you this — Sony has developed an incredibly impressive machine, one that will surprise you with its functionality and versatility. In many ways, it is the ultimate gaming toy, taking elements of handhelds that have worked before and merging them with the new socially-intertwined landscape.

Whispers and hints from the developers allow us to assume there'll be some kind of multiplayer in the Vita-sized versions of the PS3 titles.
[Update 1/25: In the original version of this post, I erroneously described Naughty Dog as the devs of Golden Abyss. This has been corrected to reflect that Sony Bend is responsible for this title and that it is launching on February 22nd.]
Over at Destructoid, while talking about his hands-on time with both Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Resistance: Burning Skies, contributor Maxwell Roahrig says that while getting in few words with developers Sony Bend and Nihilistic Software, he was able to glean some additional details about each games' respective multiplayer.
He was was able to confirm that both titles would have it, although it's unclear what shape it would take for either game. Speaking with the Sony Bend rep, Roahrig was able to extract only that whatever was planned for Uncharted, it would be "something different." Meanwhile, Roahrig reports that the Resistance team at Nihilistic were looking to replicate the console multiplayer experience, meaning many of the modes in the PS3 version are likely to make an appearance on the handheld.

Zipper Interactive have made quite a name for themselves over the past few years, particularly in the third-person strategic shooter category. With heavy hitter titles like the Socom series, Crimson Skies and Mag, they've established themselves as the company that’s at the front of the tactical gaming pack. Their next title, Unit 13 for the PlayStation Vita, looks to pull from the company's roots, while taking advantage of numerous unique features of Sony's next gen portable, and they were at this year's CES showing off the latest build of the game.
Shown off alongside a handful of other upcoming titles, Unit 13 isn't the only game packing heat in the launch window (there's Resistance: Burning Skies and Uncharted Golden Abyss just to name a couple), but it is the one that you're going to want to play with your friends the most.
