The best movies made expressive use of music. For example, Charli Xcx’s “Boom Clap” was perfectly used in The Fault in Our Stars, the film adaptation of John Green’s novel of the same name. This raises an interesting question: did the book directly inspire the song? Charli Xcx had something to say about that — and how she reacted to the movie.
Charli Xcx’s ‘Boom Clap’ was meant for 1 star before ending up in ‘The Fault in Our Stars’
While “Boom Clap” appeared in The Fault in Our Stars, but it wasn’t intended for that film initially. Charli Xcx tried to sell the song to former Disney star Hilary Duff before singing it herself. Ultimately, the track appeared on the film’s soundtrack.
During a 2014 interview with MTV News, the “I Love It” singer revealed that she had not finished The Fault in Our Stars. “I have it here!

The Virgin of The Quarry Lake, adapted from the short stories of Mariana Enríquez (Things We Lost in The Fire), recently celebrated its World Premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. It’s a simmering, atmospheric story that has horror in its heart but mostly plays like a brooding summer hangout with a group of girls on the verge of adulthood where the vibe is all wrong. It’s an Elevated Horror that spends the majority of its time in a coming-of-age story but packs a creeping cold open and a ripping finish.
Directed by Laura Casabé (The Returned) from a screenplay by Benjamin Naishtat (Rojo), this early 2000’s-timepiece follows a young girl caught in a love triangle with a boy and an older “more experienced” woman. In the heat of the Argentinian summer, Natalia (Dolores Oliverio) has fallen in love with Diego (Agustín Sosa). It would be a summer romance for the ages,...

Zora Grey has a story to tell. It’s a dark tale, full of spine-chilling frights and taboo thrills, unfolding from the moment you hit play on the Minneapolis singer, rapper, and producer’s second album, BELLAdonna, out Jan. 17 on Get Better Records. The buzzing synths and bass boom you’re hearing all come straight from the mind of Zora, the triple threat whose 2022 debut, Z1, brought her fans and press coverage (including in Rolling Stone). But this time, there’s a twist: Her vocals come in character.

Welp, it’s January. That special time of year where everyone is simultaneously recovering from the holidays and trying to kick off the new year by putting their best foot forward. TV shows that have been on break will soon return and mid-season premieres quickly follow thereafter, but for film, January is often looked at as slow period for new releases, with offerings like “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera,” Leigh Whannell’s “Wolf Man,” and Steven Soderbergh’s “Presence” being unveiled. Films that have had awards-qualifying runs like Mike Leigh’s “Hard Truths” and Gia Coppola’s “The Last Showgirl” will also expand wider, boosting their profiles in time for Oscar voting, but generally, there’s not much going on to excite the average movie-goer this month. So what better time to say, “Out with the new, in with the old!”

“Within every man there are two men. One who learns to be civilized by day. One who longs to be savage by night.”
So begins the theatrical teaser for Mike Nichols’ Wolf (1994). I remember seeing it for the first time on the “Coming Soon” section of a freshly bought VHS tape brought home by my mom (it might have been Bram Stoker’s Dracula or maybe Jurassic Park) and at the time it scared the hell out of me. The sight of a beastly Jack Nicholson, heaving with barely repressed lust and violence over the prone body of Michelle Pfeiffer, was spooky to me in a way movies can only be when you’re eight years old and the possibility of monsters being around every corner is still very viable to you.

Cover songs are a divisive topic in music, at once celebrated for their ability to bring new life to old material while also being decried as the provenance of schlocky tribute acts or wedding singers. Yet covers have been an integral part of rock and roll ever since the beginning, with many of rock's earliest stars relying heavily on old blues standards.
There's certainly no formula to what makes a good cover song. Some are great because they distill a song's essence into a stronger form of itself, relying on an artist's chops and passion to stand out from what came before, even if not much changes in the arrangement. Some are transformative, playing with genre and instrumentation to create something that would never otherwise have existed. Here, then, are ten rock covers that rocked way harder than the originals.

Hollywood has been borderline obsessed with Richard Nixon and the Watergate scandal for over half a century. Plenty of presidents or watershed legislative decisions have gotten adaptations, but given the recency of his crimes, Nixon is on another level. There have been 24 feature films centered on Nixon and/or Watergate, and that's not including the recent influx of prestige miniseries like 2023's "The White House Plumbers" about Nixon's political saboteurs, E. Howard Hunt and G. Gordon Liddy or 2022's "Gaslit," the Julia Roberts-starring series about Martha Mitchell, the wife of Nixon's at-the-time United States Attorney General.

“Agatha All Along” has finished its journey — at least, for the time being — and odds are, you might be feeling a witch-sized hole in your life. Well, worry not. You can still rewatch the series on Disney+, or you can check out the films that inspired the series — as recommended by the showrunner herself.
Each week, Jac Schaeffer sat down with TheWrap to do a deep dive on every episode of “Agatha All Along” (and you can check those out here). Naturally, the Marvel show leaned in on the magic of everything. But it also embraced move-making magic, utilizing real sets, practical effects, forced persepctive and more.
So, in discussing the finale of the series, we had her round up a few recommendations for those who want to understand and experience the series a bit deeper. Here are 10 movies like “Agatha All Along” that Schaeffer would suggest you watch next.

Heathers is conventionally put in a lineage with Clueless and Mean Girls as female-driven teen comedies that define the movies respective generations. This easy comparison overlooks the dark tone of Heathers, making The Craft a more fitting companion. While Heathers and Clueless are both about popularity and high school cliques, putting them in dialogue just for sharing a setting is too simplistic.
Heathers starred Winona Ryder as Veronica Sawyer, a girl trying to join the Heathers popular crew. By contrast, The Craft is about four girls who are not just unpopular but actively targeted. Robin Tunney led the cast of The Craft as Sarah Bailey, who has a similar arc with magic as Veronica had with popularity: first she sees it as a tool but then realizes it can be a weapon. Every Clueless character gets their happy ending, but not everyone escapes the end of The Craft much like Heathers.

Nancy Downs may have mishandled her magic in The Craft, but I might have done the same as her if I was in Nancy's position, and I can't help but root for her. An extremely underrated Halloween horror movie, The Craft follows Sarah Bailey (Robin Tunney), a California high school student with strange powers even she doesn't understand. When she moves to a new school, Nancy befriends a trio of outcasts who all have a fascination with the occult and witchcraft. In Sarah, they see the solution to their problems and to becoming popular.
If you imagine Heathers and Halloween Town blended together, you might get The Craft. The delightful twist on the coming-of-age high school movie, The Craft excels because of its distinctly '90s flavor, serious insights into feminism and society's views on women, and some fantastic characters. Nancy Downs, played by Fairuza Balk, is a particularly fascinating character in the movie.

Much as Kathryn Hahn’s mischievous witch Agatha Harkness was the Mvp of the excellent WandaVision, one wouldn’t be blamed for wondering if a spin-off series about her was really necessary. Four episodes into Agatha All Along, the primary reason it exists is clear: because Kathryn Hahn is simply too deliciously devious and charismatic in this role to not be unleashed on a bigger scale.
We find Agatha trapped in Wanda’s spell — but where the Scarlet Witch played out her narrative via sitcoms, Agatha is envisioning herself as a Mare Of Easttown-esque detective in a Scandi-inspired crime drama. It’s only when mysterious foe Rio (Aubrey Plaza) and a young, eyeliner-wearing burglar known only as Teen (Joe Locke) enter the fray that Agatha registers what’s happening, and claws herself back to reality.
The real dynamite is Kathryn Hahn herself.

Say what you will about the Marvel Cinematic Universe's foray into television on Disney+, but you can't deny that the company knows how to craft a credit sequence. AI-fueled "Secret Invasion" screw-up aside, Marvel shows on Disney+ have signed off with some of the most creative, enjoyable end credits in recent memory, many of them a mini-adventure in their own right.
"Agatha All Along" is no exception. The new series may not be big on mid-credit scenes, but it uses its end credits to tell us exactly what it's about. The first episode ends with the Donovan song "Season of the Witch," which would be too on the nose if it weren't such an excellent, effective tune. It also shows the names of the series' cast and crew over a sort of witchy mood board, one that features witches ranging from creepy to adorable. There's historical information on display, complete...

There was a time when Marvel Studios and its dedicated fan base were making it seem like their movies and shows should be judged within the parameters of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So, if they made a spy-thriller film like Captain America: The Winter Soldier and I compared it with, let’s say, The Bourne Identity and came to the conclusion that Tws was bad, that was considered unfair. If they made a legal sitcom like She-Hulk and I compared it with something that’s referenced in that miniseries, Ally McBeal, and said that She-Hulk seemed like a cheap copy of Ally McBeal, then I’d be called a hater. But now, Marvel’s aura has dissipated quite a bit due to the decrease in its output, thereby pushing people to watch original stuff. So, I don’t think I’ll be burned at the stake for saying that...

[Editor’s Note: The below contains spoilers for “Jennifer’s Body.”]
Hell may be a teenage girl, but the occult taking over high school halls is nothing new. The 2009 film “Jennifer’s Body,” though, ushered in a new era of “female rage” being shown onscreen. And what better age to capture coming into power than being a teen?
Academy Award-winning “Juno” scribe Diablo Cody wrote the now-iconic feature, with Karyn Kusama (“Yellowjackets”) directing. The appropriately titled “Jennifer’s Body” hinges on how high school queen bee Jennifer (Megan Fox) wields her newfound sex appeal. Sure, she may look like a grown woman on the outside, but does teen Jennifer really know how to navigate adult situations? Not quite.
So when Jennifer sets her sights on seducing the lead singer (Adam Brody) of a band touring through town, it doesn’t totally go to plan. Turns out that the aforementioned rockers want to sacrifice a virgin, and Jennifer lies about having no sexual history whatsoever.

Spooky season is nearly here.
And Peacock, Universal’s direct-to-consumer streaming platform, has just unveiled its Halloween programming line-up, full of tricks and treats from the studio’s back catalog, as well as two new series (“Teacup” and “Hysteria!”) for some fresh scares.
In 2022 and ’23, there was at least one big Blumhouse movie that simultaneously debuted on Peacock — in ’22, it was David Gordon Green’s trilogy-capping “Halloween Ends” and last year, it was the video game adaptation “Five Nights at Freddy’s”. This year doesn’t have anything quite like that, but it’s still a powerful collection of titles for every viewer.
The Sept. 1 batch includes classics like “Bride of Frankenstein,” “It Came From Outer Space” and “Werewolf of London;” 1980s favorites like “Halloween III: Season of the Witch,” “The Funhouse” and “The Thing;” along with more modern hits like the original “Candyman,” Jordan Peele’s “Us” and several entries in the “Saw” franchise.

Famous witch movies like Practical Magic and The Craft explore different aspects of witchcraft, from family dynamics to darker occult themes. Practical Magic's blend of fantasy and romance resonates with audiences, while The Love Witch and The Lords of Salem take a darker approach to the genre. Whether it's horror, comedy, or romance, there's a witch movie for every taste, with Practical Magic set to receive a long-awaited sequel.
Practical Magic is one of the best movies about witches of the past several decades, but many witch films like it aren't recognized as often. Other famous movies that tackle the subject of witchcraft, like The Craft or The Blair Witch Project, focus on the more sinister aspects of the occult. While Practical Magic has some scary scenes, the most memorable parts of the story revolve around the character's interpersonal relationships. Despite its low critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes, Practical Magic has a loyal audience who appreciate its charm and core message. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman's chemistry shines in the movie, adding depth to their characters. Practical Magic 2 is proof of the original movie's underrated status and lasting impact on fans.
While some movies earn their low critics scores on Rotten Tomatoes, theres one Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman movie that I still want to get the justice it deserves. As a so-called spooky child, theres a special place in my heart for any movies that fall into the categories of horror and spooky, and theres something extra-special about movies about witches. Although I admittedly arrived late to the greatness of movies like Hocus Pocus and Practical Magic, the latter immediately became one of my favorite movies about witches.

Where are all my witches at?
I, like many women of my age, spent a formative part of my youth enamored with the idea of witches. While Buffy the Vampire Slayer wasn’t quite my bag, I adored Charmed. My VHS copy of Practical Magic got more play than a yo-yo. And, of course, I was an avid viewer of Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
Did I myself dabble in magical arts, though? No, and I won’t pretend I did either. But man, did I so often wish that one day I’d just wake up with magical powers. I also wished I’d wake up one day and have a twin, too, as I also voraciously devoured the T*Witches novel series.
When it came to classic Halloween tropes, witches often received the lightest treatment for a long time. Witch media, post the long-standing green-face, wart-nosed, pointy-hat likeness instead...

“Being good or bad isn’t a choice a woman gets to make by herself,” filmmaker Elizabeth Sankey narrates in her spellbinding new documentary, “Witches.” It’s an incisive perspective on an age-old cinematic question that’s never had a good enough answer: “Are you a good witch or a bad witch?” as Glinda once asked. As Sankey might see it, the question itself put Dorothy in danger.
Our ever-shifting sense of women’s autonomy resonates in countless contexts, and that’s worth keeping front of mind throughout this feature-length consideration of postpartum mental health and the historic persecution of women. Weaving personal experience and keen anthropological theory into a lush and haunting tapestry of magical portrayals from pop culture, Sankey achieves an intricate archival exposition backed with tremendous feeling. She uses old film footage, insightful interviews from experts and friends, and select theatrical scenes (all silent) shot specifically for...

As an artwork detailing the testimonies of ordinary women who have faced terrifying post-partum anxiety, depression and psychosis, Elizabeth Sankey’s 90-minute goth-lite documentary Witches succeeds in shedding light on a stigmatized and often silenced phenomenon many new mothers endure. However, the director takes this solid concept and dilutes it with trivial pop feminist pseudo-history, positing a dubious connection between the European and American witch trials of the 16th and 17th centuries and women’s post-birth psychological suffering.
Premiering at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival and set to be distributed by streaming service Mubi, the film is certainly watchable but perhaps only 50 percent compelling.
Sankey argues that post-partum psychotic hallucinations may have led countless women of yore to willingly confess to cavorting with Satan. She showcases little evidence supporting this theory, aside from reading aloud a few sentences from primary sources, and attempts to wrap her suppositions in tritely nebulous metaphors...

The Craft theory claims Sarah was the only true witch in the coven. Bonnie and Rochelle had no powers, so they relied on Sarah, who transferred them her magic. Nancy could have drawn power from Manon or been a dark witch, but The Craft: Legacy debunks one of these options.
The Craft followed a covens struggles once their spells had negative repercussions on them, but a theory suggests only one of the covens members was a true witch, and it wasnt Nancy (Fairuza Balk). The 1990s were a great decade for horror with the resurgence of the slasher genre and teen-led movies, among them The Craft. Directed by Andrew Fleming, The Craft was a box office success but didnt do so well with critics, who praised the performances of the main cast and Flemings direction but criticized its writing and too many horror clichs. Still, The Craft has since gained a cult following.

Skeet Ulrich excels at playing antagonistic criminal characters who come off as frustratingly likable, from Billy Loomis to Parish's Colin. Ulrich's charm lies in his ability to make complex antagonists difficult to hate, drawing in audiences effortlessly. Warning: spoilers for various horror movies.
Some horror movies reveal their villain early on, either discreetly or explicitly, setting the stage for the characters' quest for survival. The villains in movies like I Know What You Did Last Summer and The Craft were set up from the beginning, with their true intentions gradually revealed throughout the story. In films like The Exorcist and A Nightmare on Elm Street, the presence of the villain is established in the opening minutes, making their impact on the story immediate and chilling.
The point of many horror movies is to keep the audience guessing who’s the real evil force messing with the characters, but some movies actually reveal their villain right away in different ways and with different results. In order to keep the suspense going from beginning to end, some horror movies don’t have a clear villain, as is the case for Final Destination,...

“Now is the time. This is the hour. Ours is the magic. Ours is the power.”
As the nights grow longer and the snow begins to fall, we begin to insulate ourselves from the outside world and spend more time with our nearest and dearest. While comforting for others, this time of year can also bring with it the horrors of complicated family dynamics. For every turkey-loving Thanksgiving stan who thrives on big family reunions, there’s another lost and lonely soul looking for a friendly face. Many of us find comfort in spending time with a chosen family of trusted friends, fellow misfits we know will accept us no matter what. But even these bonds can bend. Sometimes they break. While many horror films have tackled complicated family dynamics, the witches of Andrew Fleming’s teen witch classic The Craft stand out from the crowd. This iconic film serves...

"The Amityville Horror" is one of the definitive haunted house films, a classic tale about paranormal activity terrorizing a suburban family with swarming flies, mysterious voices, and sudden illness. Even the windows resemble ominous eyes peering down on the unsuspecting victims. The movie taps into the religious undertones popularized by other 1970s releases such as "The Exorcist" and "The Omen," suggesting there is a Satanic force at work that must be destroyed.
Eventually, the new owners George and Kathy Lutz discover the horrifying history of their new home: Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered his entire family with a rifle one year prior, a Satanic worshipper named John Ketchum once lived on the land, and the house itself was built on a Shinnecock burial ground.
Despite receiving mixed reviews for elements like the cheesy portrayal of a possessed George, "The Amityville Horror" ended up having a significant impact on the horror genre.

As the autumn days wear on, horror fans around the world mourn the passing of spooky season and turn their lonely eyes to November. What better film to watch while finishing off the Halloween candy than Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow?
Adapted from Washington Irving’s 1820 short story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” this icy film begins in an autumnal cornfield and ends on a snowy street just in time for a new century. Burton’s version of the story also features a surprising number of witches, a baffling appearance by Christopher Walken, and one of the most stunning villain reveal dresses in cinematic history.
