Director Herman Yau puts aside for a moment the social and political themes that often are the backbone of his films to dedicate his time to “Nessun Dorma”, an exercise in the noir genre which is a bit pulp and rather disposable. The film takes inspiration for its title from the Puccini’s opera Turandot, as Nessun Dorma is the famous aria from its final act, but it has very little to do with the events of the opera itself.
Jasmine (Janice Ma) is a beautiful and young Hongkonger who runs a cheerful shelter for abandoned dogs – probably just out of passion given her luxurious standard of living – and is about to marry Vincent (Gordon Lam), a wealthy and famous businessman. We can guess that Vincent is famous from magazine covers portraying the couple and from constant references to lurking paparazzi and journalists but it is never clear why he is so famous.

As an avid fan of both exploitation and documentary, I could not easily find anything better to watch than a documentary about Hk cinema’s Cat III movies. Even more so, since James Mudge, a personal friend of mine and author of one of the most detailed guides in the category participates in the film, along a number of experts, like the director Calum Waddell and Sean Tierney (aka Silver Spleen), some of the actual protagonists of the films of the category, like Anthony Wong and Josie Ho, and some of their directors, like Godfrey Ho, who talk about both Cat III and their personal experiences.
The documentary starts with the history of the category, tracing it, as usually in Hk cinema, in the productions of Shaw Brothers and the influence of Run Run Shaw that allowed him to “ignore” censorship. The film “Men Behind the Sun” however, is considered...

Director Herman Yau and star Anthony Wong first collaborated in the legendary exploitation movies “The Untold Story” (1993) and “Ebola Syndrome” (1996). Now they are back in “The Sleep Curse” (2017) to bring us another gory, supernatural thriller that touches on human experiments, the evil and victims of war.
“The Sleep Curse” starts off with some grainy video of a Malaysian Chinese father who suffers from insomnia, which eventually leads to extremely violent and criminal acts. Next up, we are introduced to Dr. Lam (Anthony Wong) a professor, who does research on sleep disorders. It soon turns out that his supervisors are not totally pleased with his experiments and research, so they cut his funding.
Consequently, his ex-girlfriend, Monique (Jojo Goh) turns up one day asking for his help because her family is suffering from insomnia. Since she also comes with a good size cheque, he is more than pleased to help,...

Hong Kong favourite Anthony Wong Chau Sang is to be honoured with the Golden Mulberry Award for Outstanding Achievement at this year’s Far East Film Festival in Udine, Italy. The controversial performer has been a ubiquitous presence in the Hong Kong film industry since the late 1980s, with more than 200 acting credits to his name. Wong is probably best known in the west for his deranged turns as Sweeney Todd-style serial killers in the Herman Yau-directed Category III classics The Untold Story (1993) and Ebola Syndrome (1996), but also gave memorable performances in the likes of Hard Boiled, Infernal Affairs and the Young and Dangerous series. Wong has also appeared in Hollywood productions including The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and The Painted...

G4's just posted their latest offering of Body Count , a genre based web series hosted by Wrong Turn 2 director Joe Lynch. In this episode, "Classic Horror Movies for the End Of Summer", Lynch profiles and recommends three of his favorite goriffic horror flicks - Roy Frumkes and Jim Muro's infamous Street Trash , the legendary Hong Kong shocker Ebola Syndrome (Yi boh lai beng duk) and Chris Sivertson's The Lost adapted from the Jack Ketchum novel. Ok, that last one isn't really "goriffic", but it is disturbing and highly recommended, even by this writer. Check out the episode below: Video Game - E3 2009 - Attack of the Show...
