Director Jari Halonen has stated that his Joulubileet is a "huge classic", is "touching perfection" and is among the top five "best acted films" ever made.
The first version of the story was written as a play "Jätkät" (Guys) by Jari Halonen during his studies at the Theatre Academy of Helsinki. The play also featured actors Jorma Tommila, Rauno Juvonen and Halonen himself from the film version.
Director Jari Halonen says that even when some aspects of the film are dramatized, it's based on a true story. The characters are real.
There are creativity and compassion also in the criminal underworld. That was the undertone of the film for director Halonen.
The first pig in the film had to be replaced when it became too big.
