Welcome to the 2024 gaming odyssey, where the scenery is as varied as the galaxy. This year has seen an upsurge in game design, pushing the boundaries of what we thought was possible on consoles, PCs, and mobile devices. Examples include epic RPGs and heart-pounding shooters. Each game brings something unique to the table, whether it be through mind-blowing graphics, cutting-edge game mechanics, or heartfelt tales.
We considered several key factors when compiling this list of the “20 Best Games of 2024.” We sought titles that were willing to break the mold by offering fresh gameplay mechanics or storytelling techniques. Innovation is the lifeblood of gaming. Game entry is king, ensuring that every entry looks good and feels fantastic to play. Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 has been smashing its sales goals, bringing in a whole new wave of fans as well as dedicated veterans of the 40K universe, largely thanks to the sheer amount of content it offers at launch. However, while there are many excluded features in Space Marine 2 that would be perfect for a sequel or Dlc, there is a key change that a sequel should definitely make.
While the first two games have followed the exploits of Titus and his band of Ultramarines, it's time that it shifts focus to another Space Marine Chapter, perhaps one that has gone sorely overlooked. The player count on Steam keeps rising, with it becoming the most played Warhammer game of all time, with an all-time peak of 225,690 according to SteamDB. Naturally, this has led Saber Interactive to start looking forward at potential sequels and story-based Dlc, with developers already discussing ideas.

Space Marine 2 has been a hit since its release, and for good reason. The latest Warhammer 40K game combines brutal combat with strategic cooperation. But some players are complaining the game is too easy, while others argue that skillful gameplay naturally reduces the challenge.

The game has different difficulty settings, but even the hardest settings are being called out by some players for being “too easy”. But one fan took to Reddit to say that those who find Space Marine 2 too easy might not be using the game’s difficulty settings effectively or simply don’t understand the design choices by the devs.

With more than 12 years passing between the debut of the original Warhammer 40k: Space Marine and its sequel, Space Marine 2, fans were rightfully concerned about the new game’s standard, as it was in the hands of a different studio. Thankfully, the worries seem to be unfounded, but Space Marine 2 has absolutely smashed it!

The brand-new game is the biggest opener for the Warhammer 40k franchise and is selling like hot pancakes. Its success can be attributed to developer Saber Interactive’s drive to push boundaries and pay close attention to detail. However, the studio agrees that if it hadn’t made a crucial addition to a level in the game, it would’ve been a complete disaster.

Henry Cavill’s Warhammer 40K adaptation is a highly anticipated project among fans of the franchise. But to succeed, it needs to deliver on the universe’s emotional depth as much as its brutal, war-torn aesthetic. And there are a lot of ways to go about it.
The Angels of Death series was a fantastic depiction of the Warhammer universe. | Image Credit: Warhammer
One of the most moving moments in Warhammer‘s lore is a scene from the animated series Angels of Death, where the Dreadnought Ignis meets his end with dignity and heartbreak. Without a similar moment of gravitas, Cavill’s series may risk missing the soul of Warhammer.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 may follow the journey of Titus and the Ultramarines throughout the game's story, but it still gives the player insight into the other Space Marine Chapters and what they stand for. Each Chapter is so unique, they can be easily recognized through more than just their colors. They all have a set of principles, behaviors, and views that align quite well with the 12 Zodiac star signs.
When looking at the Zodiac signs and the Space Marine Chapters, it is not a simple connection of likes and dislikes, but more a deeper look at how they view their place in the world, or galaxy-spanning conflict. Whether the Chapter is offensive or defensive, ferocious or focused, optimistic or cynical - their representation in the Space Marines reflects the personality traits of someone's Zodiac sign.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is certainly doing justice to the Imperium of Man's Angels of Death. Although the campaign follows a trio of Ultramarines, which are the mascots for both the Space Marines and the Warhammer 40,000 universe as a whole, players have the opportunity to customize their Space Marines. These customizable Angels of Death can be used in the online PvE missions and the PvP modes, featuring numerous classes and play styles, but for the campaign, players must stick with the Ultramarine squadron of Lieutenant Titus, Chairon, and Gadriel.
The Imperium of Man's Space Marines aren't the only ones that can be customized either, since the PvP mode makes one team play Chaos Space Marines, while the other fights for the Emperor and against heresy. This makes PvP lore friendly, as with every other aspect of the game, and it is clear that the developer cares a great deal...

“The battle is so big”: Space Marine 2 Took The First Descendant’s Greatest Feature and Perfected it
With more than a decade between the debut of the original Warhammer 40k: Space Marine and its sequel, Space Marine 2, fans were rightfully worried that the sequel might not reach the same heights. After all, development tasks were in the hands of a different studio, Saber Interactive, rather than Relic Entertainment.

Thankfully, the worries seemed to be unnecessary, as Space Marine 2 has proven to be a proper tribute to the legendary franchise, a worthy successor to the original. The sequel’s success can be attributed to a range of new additions and features, but one of them has left its mark on the gaming community.
What’s even more shocking is that Saber snatched this one right from the hands of The First Descendant and elevated it to the absolute next level.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 looks to be living up to all the expectations that the fan base had for it. It faithfully brings the deadly and somewhat strange universe of Warhammer 40k to the video game scene, from its visual details to its enemies, such as the overwhelming numbers of the Tyranid hordes. Most importantly, the game feels like Warhammer, with squads of Space Marines that constantly call each other brother while fighting in the name of the Emperor.
Although the main story follows a squadron of Ultramarines, the mascots for the Space Marines and the Warhammer 40k universe as a whole with their dark blue armor, players can customize their Space Marine to be a part of whatever Chapter they wish. Titus, the protagonist of the series, even spends the beginning of the game as a member of the Deathwatch. As co-op horde shooters that debuted in 2024, it’s expected for Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2 and Helldivers 2 to be considered natural rivals or, at the very least, to be in some kind of friendly competition.
The Space Marine sequel still needs to improve in major ways. Image via Saber Interactive
Sure, you could say that each game has its strengths and offers a particular experience, making them both equally enjoyable. However, once you take a look at Space Marine 2‘s player count, it’s crystal clear that the game is bound to live under the shadow of Helldivers 2.

Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 is now available across various gaming platforms and it is receiving universal praise from the critics and gaming community alike. Fans wasted no time diving into the short yet satisfying single-player story campaign and immediately wanted to see how the multiplayer aspect has improved since the first game. Unfortunately, most players are dealt with an awful hand and suffer several server issues.

In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war, and in the world of Warhammer 40,000, there is no greater symbol of that war than the Space Marines. These genetically enhanced super-soldiers are known for their unwavering loyalty and unrelenting ferocity on the battlefield.
But what makes them truly formidable is their ability to fight as a cohesive unit—a brotherhood of warriors who stand together against the unending tide of enemies.

The Warhammer 40,000 universe is rich with so much lore that it would be impossible to cram everything into one game. As such, when it comes to a game like Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, fans are left in the dark wondering whether their favorite facet of the Adeptus Astartes will appear or not. This could include the elite bodyguard of the Emperor himself, Adeptus Custodes.
While many may know these super soldiers as the best of the best, destined to a life of servitude as the guards of the Imperial Palace, Space Marine 2 is actually perfectly set for them to appear and fight alongside Titus and his squad. One of the many reasons the extremely positive Space Marine 2 reviews praised it was for its exploration of the wider 40K universe. So, it's completely understandable for fans to assume that the Adeptus Custodes would appear.

Space Marine 2 was recently released to much fanfare, and critics and the public alike have agreed it’s one of the games of the year, at least so far. With Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 on the way, there's never been a better time to get into this sprawling franchise. It's been nearly 40 years since Warhammer made its debut as a tabletop miniature war game with a fantasy slant. Since then, it's spawned innumerable spinoffs and adaptations, including a space-age spinoff and several forays into the video game space. The latest of those is Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2, which is now available for preorder ahead of its launch on September 9, 2024.
In the ensuing 40 years, Warhammer has skyrocketed to international popularity, with an enormous player base and even a handful of celebrity endorsements. But the release of any new video game in such a storied franchise inevitably brings newcomers to the table, and with so much history and so many different properties, it can be difficult to know where to begin. As fans await the release of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 with bated breath, Focus Entertainment isn’t letting its foot off the gas for even a second on the road to launch day. The company has breadcrumbing information, and who could blame them?
The sequel to the 2011 release has been one of the most requested for over a decade in the community. With the chance to once again play as Captain (now Lieutenant) Titus now less than two weeks away, the company has revealed the content roadmap for the game, and it’s gotten everyone excited.
Space Marine 2 Season Pass Roadmap Promises Highly Requested Game Mode
While taking down a powerful enemy can feel empowering, there’s something satisfying in mowing down waves up waves of smaller foes. Given the relentlessness of the Tyranids and other factions, these kinds of battles would fit perfectly in Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, and Saber Interactive aims to deliver.

Written by George Mann | Art by Tazio Bettin | Colour by Erica Erin Angiolini | Published by Titan Comics | Format: Paperback, 112pp
After a thousand years of warp storms, the Calaphrax Cluster has re-opened to the universe, and Baltus and his fellow Dark Angel Space Marines join a strike force sent to explore and secure the region, in search of forgotten artefacts and ancient technology! But the forces of Chaos are never far away… and a shameful Dark Angels secret from the Horus Heresy soon leads to a new front in the war!
Ahh, Warhammer 40000. I remember you from my youth. Hours spent painstakingly painting and arranging little figurines on my desk so I could make shooty noises out of the corner of my mouth and stare at them proudly.
What? Game? There’s a game?
Anyway, onto the comic. This volume comes from Titan and collects the first four issues of the series under the title of Will of Iron. There are plenty of opportunities to make shooty noises out of the corner of your mouth throughout because as we all know: in the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war.
It’s not the destination, however, but the journey that really shines through in this volume.
The artwork, by Tazio Bettin, has some very impactful moments throughout. Made even more stunning by colourist Erica Erin Angiolini, there are a few pages where I just stopped to gape at the beautiful space vistas that these two have managed to bring alive. In fact, if it had been a comic comprised entirely of dramatic space landscapes, I would have been happy (but maybe a little bored). Luckily, we also get some well envisioned characters and action sequences as well.
On the story side, it’s written by George Mann. In our review of the first issue by Dean Fuller, he mentions how the story is not really for people new to Warhammer 40k or the surrounding universe. For this first volume, that description still stands true. I get that Space Marines don’t like Chaos Space Marines because of reasons and the Chaos Marines are probably the bad guys because they are uglier and wear black (possibly because it’s slimming?) but, beyond that, I don’t have much of an in depth knowledge myself. I mean, why can’t they all just get along?
I also realised, on the my third read through of the volume, that I didn’t know any of the character’s names. At first, I thought it was because they had names like Inquisitor Sabbethiel, Interregator-Chaplain Altheous, and Master Seraphus, which are long and complicated and refuse to stay in my brain. But on a fourth read through, I came to the conclusion that character development is on the weaker side.
Inquisitor Sabbethiel (just writing that name is a pain) and her motley crew are by far the most interesting group in the volume, but they are just teased at. Who are they? Why are they following them? They are also the most varied bunch of characters in the comic, providing a stark contrast to the faceless space marines and armies who shoot at each other for the rest of the issue. Maybe a bit more character time and less epic battles might have balanced it out, but an argument could be made that you don’t buy a ‘Warhammer’ comic for the emotional journey. Pew pew pew!
All in all, not a terrible volume. If you’re a 40k fan, and have the lore down, or are looking for a fast-paced, action-filled read this might be one worth checking out. But for the uninitiated or a random passer-by? Maybe not quite your cup of tea.

Whether you're familiar with the game Warhammer 40,000 or not, this is still an epic and visually stunning fan-made animated series that anyone can enjoy! It's called Helsreach and it was created by Richard Boylan. The series in an adaptation of Aaron Dembski-Bowden’s 2010 novel of the same name, which "follows the exploits of the Black Templar chapter of Space Marines as they race to defend the Imperial planet of Armageddon."
I really dig the dark and gritty animation style. It has a unique feel to it and it works perfectly for the telling of this story. I hope you all enjoy what's been released so far!

Following their initial announcement, Titan Comics have ths week unveiled the variant covers for the debut issue of their forthcoming Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III mini-series, which is based on the smash hit video game.
Written by Ryan O’Sullivan (Eisenhorn: Xenos, Turncoat) and illustrated by Daniel Indro (Vikings: Uprising, Doctor Who), the Dawn of War III mini-series will tie-in to the colossal Dawn of War real-time-strategy games, produced by Relic Entertainment with Sega and Games Workshop, in which players command armies of the Space Marines, Orks, and the Eldar to dominate the battlefield.
Titan’s Dawn of War III comic series tells an all-new tale in parallel to that of the video game story, which sees three factions – the Blood Ravens Space Marines, the Eldar, and a fearsome Ork horde – converging on a planet where a weapon of devastating power has been unearthed.

Roughly 22 years ago, I was introduced to a game called Warhammer 40K. A game where the forces of Space Marines, Orks, Eldar and Chaos clashed in battle as a part of table top war gaming. Fast forward a couple decades, Warhammer moved the battle to the digital arena, with the war reaching to PCs and numerous console machines.
Now, the Warhammer franchise furthers its growth with an Mmo! So let’s check out the newest game for this fantasy world, Warhammer 40K: Eternal Crusade.
Starting out you need to create a character to use in game. I started out with Eldar, my favorite race. However, if you don’t want to go with the superior race, there are the options of Orks, Space Marines & Chaos Marines. You then have 5 factions within those races to choose from. The Tyranid are also available, but only as an Npc race. (See chart below...

The Disney Princesses just got their most badass reimagining yet! Australian game developer and artist Emre C Deniz takes the Disney Princesses to a new level of insanity as Warhammer 40k Space Marines, and they look freakin’ awesome!
When talking to the Revelist about the why he came up with this #FemaleSpaceMarines project, he explained that it was “to support people being harassed on social media [by] aggressive members of the Warhammer 40K community who felt that their ‘lore’ was threatened.” He went on to say:
"The images were a symbol of merging the two most extremes of gender representation, Disney and Warhammer, into one single statement; that anyone can be a ‘Space Marine' and no one can stop that.”
I’ve gotta say, that’s pretty cool and inspiring to the Warhammer 40k community.
Sit the fuck down Gaston, Belle's got this.

Hr Games and Funbox Media are teaming up to bring Space Hulk Ascension to the PS4 with both digital and physical release versions. The PlayStation release comes as Hr Games have signed a Pal deal to bring this latest Warhammer 40,000 tie-in to the platform.
The strategy title was originally released for PC back in 2014 to solid reviews, and this new PlayStation version is set to come with extra content and refinements to improve the experience. Putting you in control of the heroic Space Marines, you’ll fight your way through over a hundred campaign missions as you attempt to null the threat of classic Warhammer enemies such as the dreaded Genestealers.
Space Hulk Ascension is more than “just” a strategy game, however, and it offers RPG-style customisation options and a large reworking of the mechanics of the original. Its dark and gritty approach to the classic conflicts of Warhammer 40,000 will...

Xcom 2’s delay to February of next year leaves an undeniable gap in this fall’s strategy game lineup – a hole that other studios seem eager to fill.
Warhammer 40,000: Deathwatch – Enhanced Edition capitalizes on Xcom: Enemy Unknown’s isometric perspective for its turn-based firefights, in which players must halt the spread of the franchise’s insect-like Tyranids on the edge of Imperial space. Recruit more than 30 veteran Space Marines from the Dark Angels, Imperial Fists, and Black Templars, gain experience and equip additional abilities to form the first and last line of defense against bio-mechanical horrors such as Genestealers and Carnifexes. With at least 150 weapons and items tailor-built for your elite squad as well, no situation is too dangerous for the Deathwatch.
The team at Rodeo Games has not been resting on its laurels, either. While Warhammer 40,000: Deathwatch debuted on iOS devices this past July, the developers have...

Given the grand lore and well-crafted history of the Warhammer 40,000 experience, it’s little wonder it’s been the focus of a plethora of video game adaptations over the years. Now, Warhammer 40,000: Regicide joins the ranks of the likes of third person shooter Space Marine or the popular Rts battler Dawn Of War, and it brings with it something that’s at once surprising but also reassuringly familiar.
Perhaps closest in style to the strategy gameplay of Relic Entertainment’s Warhammer series, Warhammer 40,000: Regicide once more puts players in control of the familiar armies of the famous tabletop miniature game as they wage battle in their seemingly never-ending war. While Dawn Of War played like virtually every other Rts game on the market at the time, players here will find their battles restricted to classic – yet gloriously embellished – 8×8 chess boards. Sound like a bad thing? Well, it’s absolutely not.

In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war. Or more accurately: In the grim darkness of the far future, everything is done because it’s awesome. Seriously, if Warhammer 40,000 had one rule, it would be everything is done because it’s cool.
Are things like chainsaw swords or giant robots the size of cities practical? No, not really. How about giant cathedrals on top of star ships the size of continents? Not particularly. Fire lines of plasma rifle wielding soldiers that can kill their enemies long before they get in range to hit them with their chainsaw swords? Ok, maybe, but the Tau Empire is different. A shame they’re not in this game.
However, while this game may not feature the best faction in the Warhamer 40k lore, it is still one of the best games to carry the Warhammer 40k title. At the very least,...

Sometimes I’m not sure what’s scarier: the implacably murderous Alien in Ridley Scott’s film, or the fact that the groundbreaking science-fiction movie debuted 35 years ago. Yikes!
To celebrate, of sorts, Fox and Sega have collaborated on Alien Isolation, a videogame debuting today that lovingly recreates the grungy, lived-in look of the original movie alongside plenty of creepy jolts and chills of its own. It’s all plunked down in a new setting that would be a fantastic sequel (hint, hint) were Sir Ridley ever to be so disposed. If you can handle the game’s gut-churning suspense, it’s available for PCs and Sony and Microsoft videogame consoles of the two most recent generations. I highly recommend it for those with durable stomach linings and an inclination to have the bejeezus scared out of them.

Art and storytelling comes first at Famous Monsters, not political commentary or whining. This week, however, the internet was on fire with the news that Apple would attempt to ban Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples’ Saga #12 from their digital platforms, supposedly owing to a rather graphic sexual depiction. (The situation has since been resolved by an apology from comiXology, the leading online retailer of digital comics). Apple has done similar things in the past (see Joe Casey and Piotr Kowalski’s Sex #1), which is of course their prerogative as a private corporation.
I give you this, however: Saga, in all of its extreme manifestations, is a great comic. Not only that, it is one of many great comics from this week that feature less-than-family-friendly elements, proving that quality horror, Sci-Fi, and fantasy, in whatever format, may contain a number of images that one might find “objectionable”, yet can still...

James Cameron’s Aliens has had more influence on video games than any other film in history. It was a raucous, violent romp that was rife with elements that felt like a video game before home technology could even replicate it. The cast of space marines is a trope that has been used in games from Doom all the way to Halo, the ammo count display on guns has been featured in the likes of Dead Space and others…hell, the movie even had a “boss battle” against the Queen Alien that presented the sort of escalation that games have used for decades.
Despite these qualities, a film-accurate, quality Aliens game experience has eluded us. The Aliens vs. Predator titles have been non-canonical asides that varied in accuracy and playability, and many of the straightforward Alien titles have been abysmal products of the license-heavy Nes days. Wayforward’s Aliens:...

Independent Danish video game studio Full Control have announced that in association with Games Workshop they will be bringing the legendary Space Hulk (a game which I played to death as a teenager) to popular digital gaming platforms in 2013. Based on the best-selling board game and set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, the game is set to be a 3D digital turn based strategy game that recreates the classic claustrophobic board game experience for single player and multiplayer cross-platform play between PC, Mac and on iOS.
Space Hulk is set in the isolated corridors and tomb-like chambers of an ancient vessel lost in the graveyard of space. Players lead a small army of fearless Space Marine Terminators to battle in a ferocious fight for survival against hordes of predatory alien Genestealers. Based on the “Sin of Damnation” campaign from the 3rd edition board game, Space Hulk includes a robust 12 mission single-player and co-operative campaign.

Tired of hearing about Prometheus? If your answer is yes, consider moving on. If you’re still coming to grips with the film or if you’re a huge fan of the Alien universe, then read on, because we get our dirty little mitts on three books that will take you deeper into the movies than ever before. From Titan Books, Ridley Scott’s newest, Prometheus, gets a wonderful hardcover “The Art of the Film” treatment from author Mark Salisbury, while the original film is highlighted in the recently re-published The Book of Alien. Space Marines, form up, as the stars of James Cameron’s installment are highlighted in the re-published Aliens: Colonial Marines Technical Manual. The Book of Alien From authors Paul Scanlon and Michael Gross, this book, originally published in 1979 (and then again in 1993, and now once more in 2012), is a must have for any fan of Alien. It...

Ridley Scott returns to the world of "Alien" with this weekend's "Prometheus" -- and it's to celebrate some of the nastiest, scariest monsters in all of movie history: the Xenomorphs. Famously designed by H.R. Giger, these drooling extraterrestrials have terrified not only Ripley and the Space Marines, but thirty years of movie audiences. While we won't reveal if those big creepy Xenomorphs pop up in "Prometheus," we can check out a collection of awesome pieces of artwork pitting the Alien against Predator, Master Chief and E.T. Photos: Our sister site, ComicsAlliance, makes a habit of spotlighting particular artists and/or specific bodies of work. For more awesome fan art, check out their feature Best Art Ever (This Week).

With a history that spans nearly half a century, 11 feature films and a combined total of over 700 hour long episodes of television—not all of the Star Trek stories are going to be stellar. In fact some of them are downright bad (“Spock’s Brain”?). Still, they are all loved in their own way by fans far and wide, including this writer—but that can’t make the worst of them better, nor can it make the plot holes, inconsistencies and changed premises easier to swallow.
One of the worst offenders in Star Trek’s history is the eighth feature film (second for the crew of the Next Generation) Star Trek: First Contact. A film that, while I enjoyed it, nearly ruined the series’ most enticing villain.
Here I’ll recap ten reasons First Contact ruined the Borg.

This is one of those times being a geek, a collector and a fan can really come in handy. When Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine from Relic/Thq came out we covered it’s release. It got me thinking back to 1987 and the launch of the Role Playing game. I bought the copy of White Dwarf which heralded the launch of the new game and the universe that had been carefully crafted. That’s when I first encountered the amazing work of Wil Madoc Rees.
So after playing this latest incarnation I went back to my attic and dug out that issue. I then hunted out Wil. He’s now living in California and working in Hollywood. He’s easy to talk with and it’s been a pleasure to hook-up with such a talented artist; one who’s visual concept work has helped shape some of cinemas recent biggest block busters.
