Time Life has released "Bob Hope: Entertaining the Troops", a priceless presentation of Hope's famous Uso shows for American troops serving overseas. The two programs, presented uncut, are a wonderful time capsule of the era. At the time the Vietnam War was raging and the only glimpses concerned Americans got of the fighting men were grim images squeezed into the half-hour evening news during this pre-cable TV era. Thus, Hope's merry band of entertainers allowed some welcome views of the servicemen getting a rare and well-deserved laugh from the songs, skits and stand up presented by Hope and his troupe. Not surprisingly, the biggest reactions are afforded to the sex symbols who traveled with him. In this case, they include Connie Stevens, Lola Falana, Romy Schneider and Ursula Andress. Admittedly, the humor creaks with age but the spirit and good will is timeless. One of the...

It's been said that Rory Gilmore had the right boyfriend for the right time in her life.
If that's true, then Logan Huntzberger is meant to be the voice that helps guide Rory through making decisions about her future and what she truly wants out of life.
Rory and Logan's love story didn't start with cautious glances or an intense love triangle. When casual hookups stopped being enough for them, Rory and Logan surprised everyone by making it work as a couple...
...and they certainly did make it work.
Through ups and down that included stealing a yacht, a cliff-jumping accident gone awry, the loss of millions of dollars, and a pack of vicious bridesmaids, Rory and Logan weathered the storms with maturity, always coming back to one another, despite glaring indications that they should not from both of their parents.
Logan was never afraid to tell Rory when she was acting childish,...

This week marks the 25th anniversary of Beverly Hills, 90210, which debuted on October 4th, 1990 on the then-fledgling Fox network. A primetime soap opera aimed specifically at teens, it ostensibly chronicled twins Brandon (Jason Priestly) and Brenda (Shannon Doherty) Walsh and their family as they adjusted to life in posh Beverly Hills after relocating from suburban Minneapolis. But even from the beginning (and well after Brenda and Brandon both became well-entrenched amongst their peers), it was also as focused on addressing topical issues as it was the tumultuous and ever-changing relationships of its main characters (to varying degrees of success and subtlety). Over the course of the show’s 10 year run (it went off the air in May 2000), characters got together and broke up and made up and got back together again, and the show tackled everything from divorce to alcoholism, AIDS, adoption, eating disorders, rape, domestic abuse, infidelity, drug usage on multiple levels,...

In honor of Gilmore Girls finding its new home on Netflix late last week, EW staffers Molly Smith and Lindsey Bahr have compiled a list of their favorite episodes—one per season. The unfamiliar should use these picks as an entry point; the obsessed can consider this a refresher to rekindle your fervor for the series. Let's make one thing clear: There's no such thing as a "best" Gilmore Girls episode. This is just a little something to make you fall in love, and for many, fall in love again. "Pilot" (Season 1, Episode 1) We'd be remiss not to include the pilot,...

It took me a while, but I finally got to see this one-woman cabaret tribute to the music and inspiration of legendary songstress Laura Nyro. Starring singer/pianist Kate Ferber, who co-wrote it with Louis Greenstein, it premiered in 2009, but at least one detail's changed since then: mention of Nyro's 2012 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has been incorporated into one of the character monologs.
Anyone who nowadays programs Nyro's songs -- a handful of famous hits (those heard this evening included "Save the Country," "Wedding Bell Blues," "And When I Die," and "Eli's Comin'"), and oodles of album tracks beloved by her devoted fans -- has to deal with the shadow of her highly distinctive performances, drenched in vocal virtuosity that includes unique phrasing and a spectacular range. Ferber pulls this difficult task off with aplomb. She seems to have...

Dragons may be the most feared creatures in all the land, but it turns out bears are also pretty terrifying.
As a fan of the complicated relationship between Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and Brienne — they’re basically the Ross and Big-Rachel of Westeros — I really enjoyed the May 12 episode of Game of Thrones, which found the Kingslayer going up against a bear of an enemy to save his lady from death. And by “a bear,” I mean an actual freakin’ bear. It was huge!
Sansa & Tyrion’s Wedding Bell Blues
Over at King’s Landing, Margaery (Natalie Dormer) was helping Sansa (Sophie Turner) see the silver lining in her upcoming marriage to Tyrion (Peter Dinklage). Sure, she was going to have gross sex with the tiny, nefarious womanizer — but their eventual son will have a bright future ahead of him!
Of course, all she really needed to say was, “Sansa, girl,...

While watching Rock of Ages last weekend in preparation for the movie's press junket (Stay tuned for my video interviews with director Adam Shankman, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Mary J. Blige, Julianne Hough, Malin Akerman, and Diego Boneta!), I realized that the jukebox musical is here to say. It's the perfect 21st century genre, a mix of glorified nostalgia and unapologetic bombast. I can't say that I loved Mamma Mia, but I thought the sentiment was right: Recording artists with strong, distinct catalogs (with a particular penchant for narrative songs) should be exalted in stage spectacles. Rock of Ages' mullet-tacular musicianship just isn't my thing, and I say it's time we pick nine better options for the next big jukebox musical. Some of these choices may be unexpected, but I think you'll find they're worth a second look from Alan Menken.

Ten minutes into Glee's first episode since abandoning us to a month-long post-holiday hiatus, I was tentatively optimistic.
The Tumblrati had made it clear to me that we would not be seeing much of our darling queer little Brittana and Klaine in this episode (although I was hopeful about the all-girl rendition of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face") so the bar for my expectations of homo-liciousness was set very, very low.
And although lately everything to do with Will Schuester has been boring me, I always liked him and Emma, and this seemed to be a Wemma-centric episode.
Minute eleven, however, crapped all over that. (Note: all time measurements in this recap are gross approximations. I don't actually time-stamp the show. Really, capturing all this word-for-word dialogue is hard enough.) So let's linger in the first ten minutes as long as possible.

Fox A scene from “Glee.”
Now, that’s how you do a cliffhanger.
Rachel Berry’s answer is up in the air after Finn popped the question in tonight’s “Yes/No” episode. Was it a promise ring? Or was it really a marriage proposal? Is Finn nuts? Rachel, really?
Does he not recall her giving him a creepy-eyed Lana-Del-Ray-on-snl sing-along to David Guetta’s “Without You”? The gesture was over the top; hers even more so.

Everything’s better with a little Helen Mirren — and Glee is no exception to the rule. Of course, everything’s also better with some righteous plot development that stays true to core characters, and that point was also driven home in “Yes/No,” the show’s first new episode of 2012, and (in my humble opinion) best episode of Season 3.
The news that Coach Beiste had eloped with Cooter Menkins over the winter break not only elicited a verbal barb from Sue Sylvester that was on par with any insult she ever spat back in her Season 1 heyday (offering her congrats...

New York — Welcome to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Guns N' Roses.
The seminal rock band of the late 1980s and early `90s, best known for hits like "Welcome to the Jungle," "Sweet Child O' Mine" and "November Rain," leads the 2012 class of inductees announced on Wednesday. Also making the cut is the hip-hop trio Beastie Boys; rockers the Red Hot Chili Peppers; the late singer/songwriter Laura Nyro; Donovan; and influential British rock group The Small Faces/The Faces, which included Rod Stewart and Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood.
Nyro, who wrote such hits the 5th Dimension's "Wedding Bell Blues" and Blood Sweat & Tears' "When I Die," is the only female act to make it this time around. The hall passed on Donna Summer, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Heart and Rufus with Chaka Khan, who were on the ballot for 2012.

Chicago – Angela Bassett has a quiet sophistication, when combined with her movie star presence only enhances her unique beauty. She is also a superior actor, taking on an intriguing role as a matriarch in the upcoming film “Jumping the Broom.”
The film regards an African-American tradition, the old custom of “jumping the broom” to secure their vows. Bassett plays Claudine Watson, the upper class mother of soon-to-be-wed daughter Sabrina (Paula Patton). The film features a clash between Bassett’s character and that of the groom’s family, who are decidedly working class. The levels of interacting, the exposition of class issues and the traditions in current African American culture sets this story apart from previous films in the same genre.
