Fran Drescher is joining Josh Safdie’s A24 movie, Marty Supreme.

The SAG-AFTRA President will star opposite Timothée Chalamet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Tyler, The Creator, Odessa A’zion, Penn Jillette, Kevin O’Leary a.k.a Mr. Wonderful and Abel Ferrara.

The original screenplay written by Safdie and Ronald Bronstein is based loosely on Marty Reisman’s life, set in the world of 1950s Ping Pong culture. Reisman was known to be unconventional in the sport, yet won two U.S. Men’s Singles Championships in 1958 and 1960 and more than 20 international and national titles. He became famous for mastering the hardbat style, a traditional style of table tennis that uses a racket without a sponge layer to emphasize control and spin over speed and power. His mastery of the sport earned him a reputation as one of table tennis’ last greats of that era.

“The Nanny” star and SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher has joined the cast of Josh Safdie’s table tennis movie “Marty Supreme.” She will play the mother of Timothée Chalamet’s character.

Starring alongside Chalamet and Drescher are Gwyneth Paltrow (in her first on-screen movie role since 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame”) and Tyler, the Creator (in his film debut). Odessa A’zion also stars alongside magician Penn Jillette (of Penn & Teller), investor and “Shark Tank” personality Kevin O’Leary (aka Mr. Wonderful) and “Bad Lieutenant” filmmaker Abel Ferrara.

From A24, “Marty Supreme” follows Chalamet as a young ping pong pro. Plot details are scant, but the studio is touting the film as a “fictional work set in the world of 1950s ping pong culture.” Variety broke news of the project, which is currently in production, in July.

Slasher film Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey swept the five categories it was nominated in for at the 44th annual Razzies, which “honor” the worst of filmmaking. The awards were announced today.

‘Winnie the Pooh’ won the Razzie in the picture, director, screenplay, screen couple and remake/rip-off/sequel categories. The film, based on the beloved children’s literary character, follows Pooh and Piglet, who have become feral and bloodthirsty murderers. They terrorize a group of young university women and the returning Christopher Robin.

The Razzie Redeemer Award, bestowed on a past contender who has “gone on to better things” since being nominated for a Razzie, went to “The Nanny” actor and SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher for her leadership during the 2023 actor strike.

Drescher was nominated in 1998 for worst actress in the romantic comedy film The Beautician and the Beast.

Awards season tends to give movie fans all of the glitz and glamor that we love about Hollywood…That is, until it doesn’t. As is tradition, the weekend of the 96th Academy Awards also saw the industry honoring the worst in motion pictures, with the Golden Raspberry Awards aka the Razzies giving out statues to the likes of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, Sylvester Stallone and Megan Fox.

While Expend4bles had the most nominations going into this year’s Razzies with seven, it was Blood and Honey – which popularized a hopefully limited trend of public domain horror – that won the most with five.

Richard Baneham, the Dublin-born visual effects and animation specialist who received Academy Awards for his work on the original Avatar and The Way of Water sequel, will be honored at the next Oscar Wilde Awards.

The 18th annual event, organized by the US-Ireland Alliance, is scheduled to return March 7 — in its traditional evening spot three days before the Oscars — to the Santa Monica home of Bad Robot, the production company of J.J. Abrams and Katie McGrath.

The casual bash celebrates the work of those from Ireland — and some who are not — who contribute to film, television and music.

Michael Lerner, an actor who appeared in television shows like Clueless and Glee and was nominated for an Oscar for his role in Barton Frink, has died. He was 81 years old.

Lerner died Saturday evening, his nephew and The Goldbergs actor Sam Lerner confirmed in a tribute post on Instagram.

“We lost a legend last night. It’s hard to put into words how brilliant my uncle Michael was, and how influential he was to me,” Sam posted. “His stories always inspired me and made me fall in love with acting. He was the coolest, most confident, talented guy, and the fact that he was my blood will always make me feel special.”

Phyllis Newman, known for her Tony Award-winning role as the bath towel-clad Martha Vail in the musical Subways Are for Sleeping, has died. The star of stage and screen was 86.

The news was announced by her son Adam Green, a theater critic for Vogue, via Twitter. “My sister @amanda_green and I had to say goodbye to our beautiful mother today,” he tweeted. “I’ll miss her more than I can say.”

There are also a multitude of straight-on adaptations, like Disney’s new live-action Beauty And The Beast, which premieres Friday, March 17. We love a good where-are-they-now story. Apparently so does Lisa Jakub, who you probably know better as that girl from "Mrs. Doubtfire" and "Independence Day." Not wanting to leave us confused as to her whereabouts, Jakub has quenched our desire to follow her post-child star moves by creating a blog in which she provides updates on her life after Hollywood.

Jakub, now 34, calls it "A blog about acting. And then not acting." In a nutshell, she abandoned her pre-pubescent Hollywood fame upon realizing "there must be more to life than premieres and pretending to be other people." On her blog, which she started in March, Jakub writes that she didn't want to become a "cautionary tale," like the many other child stars who've veered down paths of drug abuse and eating disorders -- an appropriate missive given the recent party antics of Amanda Bynes and Lindsay Lohan.

According to a study by Nielsen, Twitter can predict a show's success in the ratings. Basically, an increase in how much people tweet about a show predicts an eventual increase in the ratings. That seems obvious, but this study measures and quantifies the connection between the two.

The stars grabbed 17 per cent votes in the St Valentine's Day-themed survey conducted by Fandango.

'Junior' co-stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Emma Thompson came in second with 16 per cent votes, and Fran Drescher and Timothy Dalton were third with 13 per cent for 'The Beautician and the Beast', the Daily Telegraph reported.

Movie buffs voted the unlikely coupling of Kate Winslet and Jack Black fourth for 'The Holiday', while Jennifer Lopez and Ralph Fiennes in 'Maid in Manhattan' and Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler in 'Just Go With It' tied for fifth spot.

All joking aside, Joyful Noise is a family-friendly comedy in the same vein as Footloose with a wholesome message that doesn't get in the way of the fun. Writer/director Todd Graff (Bandslam, The Beautician and the Beast) has a definite hit in this movie.

The Pacashau Sacred Divinity Choir is in the middle of a performance when long-time director Bernard Sparrow (Kris Kristofferson) suffers a fatal heart attack. In order to continue to the annual Joyful Noise gospel competition, the church leaders must choose between his wife, G.G. (Parton) and Vi Rose Hill (Latifah), who has been his second for many years.

Like Tony Danza, Fran Drescher only appears in sitcoms in which her character is named Fran. It’s what acting coaches probably call her “specialty.” Or what everyone else calls “limited range.” Her new sitcom, Happily Divorced, is based on her life, specifically the personal hiccup she experienced when she divorced her husband who had recently come out of the closet (but, really, what gay man wouldn’t exchange vows with the star of 1997 Blockbuster Movie Award winner The Beautician And The Beast?) With that said, there leaves puh-lenty of room for fodder. Definitely enough material to warrant a traditional, three-camera sitcom on TV Land. It’s like Will & Grace, but more annoying! Timothy Dalton will guest-star in a multi-episode arc on the NBC's action-comedy "Chuck." Dalton will be playing a mysterious stranger who has a history with Chuck's (series star Zachary Levi) mom, played by Linda Hamilton ( Terminator , Terminator 2: Judgment Day ). This marks Dalton's first series appearance on American television since he guest-starred on "Charlie's Angels" in 1979. Dalton is perhaps best known for his portrayal of James Bond in The Living Daylights and Licence to Kill . Super Saver may have won the 2010 Kentucky Derby, but Fran Drescher won today's Twitter Pic of the Day with her Audrey Hepburn homage and modest hat for the event. Rain was not enough to scare her away from the race or the camera, it would appear.

A few tweets in the feed were decidedly less upbeat, though, as word broke that Oscar-nominated actress Lynn Redgrave passed away. Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez movie Gigli has been named the Worst Romantic Comedy of all time in a new St. Valentine's Day poll.

The film was slated by critics and shunned by cinemagoers when it was released in 2003, causing it to flop badly - much like Affleck and Lopez's real-life romance.

It was pulled from theatres after just three weeks, earned its stars Razzie Awards and now comes out top in Moviefone.com's new list of of the worst.

Editors picked Gigli above Paris Hilton's movie flop The Hottie & the Nottie; American Idol spin-off From Justin to Kelly and Ellen DeGeneres' Mr Wrong.
