Fran Drescher is joining Josh Safdie’s A24 movie, Marty Supreme.
The SAG-AFTRA President will star opposite Timothée Chalamet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Tyler, The Creator, Odessa A’zion, Penn Jillette, Kevin O’Leary a.k.a Mr. Wonderful and Abel Ferrara.
The original screenplay written by Safdie and Ronald Bronstein is based loosely on Marty Reisman’s life, set in the world of 1950s Ping Pong culture. Reisman was known to be unconventional in the sport, yet won two U.S. Men’s Singles Championships in 1958 and 1960 and more than 20 international and national titles. He became famous for mastering the hardbat style, a traditional style of table tennis that uses a racket without a sponge layer to emphasize control and spin over speed and power. His mastery of the sport earned him a reputation as one of table tennis’ last greats of that era.

“The Nanny” star and SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher has joined the cast of Josh Safdie’s table tennis movie “Marty Supreme.” She will play the mother of Timothée Chalamet’s character.
Starring alongside Chalamet and Drescher are Gwyneth Paltrow (in her first on-screen movie role since 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame”) and Tyler, the Creator (in his film debut). Odessa A’zion also stars alongside magician Penn Jillette (of Penn & Teller), investor and “Shark Tank” personality Kevin O’Leary (aka Mr. Wonderful) and “Bad Lieutenant” filmmaker Abel Ferrara.
From A24, “Marty Supreme” follows Chalamet as a young ping pong pro. Plot details are scant, but the studio is touting the film as a “fictional work set in the world of 1950s ping pong culture.” Variety broke news of the project, which is currently in production, in July.

Slasher film Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey swept the five categories it was nominated in for at the 44th annual Razzies, which “honor” the worst of filmmaking. The awards were announced today.
‘Winnie the Pooh’ won the Razzie in the picture, director, screenplay, screen couple and remake/rip-off/sequel categories. The film, based on the beloved children’s literary character, follows Pooh and Piglet, who have become feral and bloodthirsty murderers. They terrorize a group of young university women and the returning Christopher Robin.
The Razzie Redeemer Award, bestowed on a past contender who has “gone on to better things” since being nominated for a Razzie, went to “The Nanny” actor and SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher for her leadership during the 2023 actor strike.
Drescher was nominated in 1998 for worst actress in the romantic comedy film The Beautician and the Beast.

Awards season tends to give movie fans all of the glitz and glamor that we love about Hollywood…That is, until it doesn’t. As is tradition, the weekend of the 96th Academy Awards also saw the industry honoring the worst in motion pictures, with the Golden Raspberry Awards aka the Razzies giving out statues to the likes of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, Sylvester Stallone and Megan Fox.
While Expend4bles had the most nominations going into this year’s Razzies with seven, it was Blood and Honey – which popularized a hopefully limited trend of public domain horror – that won the most with five.
Here is the full list of Razzie Award winners:
Worst Picture
The Exorcist: Believer
Expend4bles
Meg 2: The Trench
Shazam! Fury of the Gods
Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey – Winner
Worst Actor
Russell Crowe, The Pope’s Exorcist
Vin Diesel, Fast X

This past summer, as Hollywood faced its second major strike, the president of actors union SAG-AFTRA took the podium. She was without makeup, she was raspy and she was pissed. Gone was the ozone-shattering hairspray and the wild prints plucked right from the zoo. Nowhere in earshot was the dog whistle voice and the dolphin laugh. This was Fran Drescher: not the street-smart bimbo of somehow successful sitcoms and expectedly by-the-numbers romances, but the woman who will do anything to show her loyalty and not back down from anything. She had done it throughout her career through battles with industry execs and cancer, and now she was doing it against some of the biggest names in Hollywood.
Wtf Happened to…Fran Drescher?
But to truly understand what the fuck happened to Fran Drescher, we go back to the beginning. And the beginning began when she was born on September 30th,...

If you had polled the opening night audience of The Beautician and the Beast back in 1997, few moviegoers would have predicted that Fran Drescher — let alone President Drescher — would someday draw praise for a fiery, televised speech about the plight of the American worker and the dangers of intelligent machines.
It’s a scenario that even a dystopian edition of Mad Libs would have deemed too random.

“That wasn’t a selfie!” exclaimed Drescher in fielding a question about the incident earlier this week, which Deadline first told you about. Kardashian posted the photo with Drescher on her Instagram Stories thread.
National Executive Director and chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland stepped in first to defend The Beautician and the Beast star in regards to her Italian fox trot.
“I want to say it’s outrageous that they would do that. What Fran was doing, was Fran was working. Which is what our members do.

"Beauty and the Beast" truly is a tale as old as time, and has been retold in countless ways, like the Ron Perlman and Linda Hamilton TV series of the same name, the Fran Drescher comedy "The Beautician and the Beast," the teen rom-drama "Beastly," or even in an episode of "Hello Kitty's Furry Tale Theater." Recently, legendary Japanese filmmaker Mamoru Hosoda delivered "Belle," a magnificent animated sci-fi fantasy film that thrusts the tale out of the world of old and into the techno future.
The story takes place in the not-so-distant future where the internet has evolved into a legitimate virtual reality called U, where avatars are created by users' scanned biometric information. A teenager named Suzu creates an avatar named Belle who becomes a pop superstar, but everything changes when her virtual concert is interrupted by the seemingly undefeatable fighter The Dragon (or "The Beast"), who she quickly becomes infatuated with.

Lots of movies are obviously patterned after fairy tales, everything from Sydney White to The Beautician And The Beast. There are also a multitude of straight-on adaptations, like Disney’s new live-action Beauty And The Beast, which premieres Friday, March 17. But we’ve noticed that there are some films clearly based on fairy tales that never come right out and express that they are: more inspiration than imitation, if you will. So in honor of Beauty And The Beast, here’s our list of subversive fairy-tale movies, where if you dig a little beneath the surface, you’ll find a golden-haired home invader, a pack of dwarves, a wolf-like villain, and even a real, live boy.

Man Up (2015)
Written by Tess Morris
Directed by Ben Palmer
UK, France, 2015
At 34, Nancy (Londoner-accented Lake Bell) is a flakey journalist on the reluctant look for love at the pestering of friends and family. Through a case of mistaken identity hinging on a self-help book, she winds up on a date turned epic day with Jack (Simon Pegg), an online marketing manager. Charming, right? It’s this on-the-nose “charm” which will divide audiences into lovers and haters (with this viewer falling more towards the latter). In spite of a stellar cast, Man Up falls flat on its promising premise of being a rom-com for nonbelievers.
From the very outset, Nancy is the cool-not-cool girl of quirky nonchalance – watching Silence of the Lambs, writing affirmations in her moleskine, chomping on a baguette, flailing in interactions with members of the opposite sex. Everything she does and says denotes a certain out-of-place yet above-it-all persona,...

Maybe if "Wild" hadn't done such a solid and visually rich job of portraying one woman's determination to restart her life by hiking 2000 miles, the banal platitudes and strange visual monotony of two older guys' determination to restart their lives by hiking 2000 miles in "A Walk in the Woods" wouldn't seem so subpar. Maybe if Robert Redford hadn't done such harrowing, committed and honest work as a man battling nature in "All Is Lost," Robert Redford's lax, barely engaged work as a man meandering through nature in "A Walk in the Woods" wouldn't seem so subpar. Maybe if "A Walk in the Woods" weren't having its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, a venue that doesn't always demand artistic or narrative experimentation but certainly rewards the work of risk-taking, it's bland and peculiar artistic and narrative flatness wouldn't seem so subpar. But here we are in Park City,...

We love a good where-are-they-now story. Apparently so does Lisa Jakub, who you probably know better as that girl from "Mrs. Doubtfire" and "Independence Day." Not wanting to leave us confused as to her whereabouts, Jakub has quenched our desire to follow her post-child star moves by creating a blog in which she provides updates on her life after Hollywood.
A recent photo of Lisa Jakub.
Jakub, now 34, calls it "A blog about acting. And then not acting." In a nutshell, she abandoned her pre-pubescent Hollywood fame upon realizing "there must be more to life than premieres and pretending to be other people." On her blog, which she started in March, Jakub writes that she didn't want to become a "cautionary tale," like the many other child stars who've veered down paths of drug abuse and eating disorders -- an appropriate missive given the recent party antics of Amanda Bynes and Lindsay Lohan.

Jon Hamm will be wearing tighter pants in the upcoming season of Mad Men! Unfortunately, producers also asked him to wear underwear so viewers wouldn't spend the season watching if Hamm consistently dresses to the right. Still, let's focus on the positive — tighter pants!
TV Land has ordered a fifth season of Hot in Cleveland, which will bring she comedy to its 100th episode.
According to a study by Nielsen, Twitter can predict a show's success in the ratings. Basically, an increase in how much people tweet about a show predicts an eventual increase in the ratings. That seems obvious, but this study measures and quantifies the connection between the two.

Snow White may be the most popular fairy tale of the moment, but closing the gap is the story of Beauty and the Beast. Just last year CBS Films came out with Beastly, starring Alex Pettyfer and Vanessa Hudgens, and just last month Disney re-released the most famous film version of the tale in 3D. While our fingers remained crossed that nobody will get the idea to remake The Beautician and the Beast, Variety has learned that a new European version of the story is now in development and has landed its two leads. Reporting from the European Film Market in Berlin, the trade says that the new Beauty and the Beast film has landed French actors Vincent Cassell and Lea Seydoux. It is said that the project is one of the biggest European titles that was announced at the market this year. Christophe Gans, who is best known for...

Sheesh. All they had to do is wait for global warming to melt all the ice, and everything woulda been fine. And people think global warming is a bad thing! Won’t someone think of the whales? Free Willy! In case you’re wondering, director Ken Kwapis is a serial criminal who has perpetrated such cinematic felonies as The Beautician and the Beast, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, He’s Just Not That Into You, and what may be one of the very worst movies ever made: License to Wed. You have been warned.

This week marks the return of Dolly Parton to the big screen for the first time since Straight Talk, 20 years ago (though she voiced a character in 2011's Gnomeo & Juliet). Joyful Noise pits her against Queen Latifah in a battle of the busts I like to think of as "Gospel Glee."
All joking aside, Joyful Noise is a family-friendly comedy in the same vein as Footloose with a wholesome message that doesn't get in the way of the fun. Writer/director Todd Graff (Bandslam, The Beautician and the Beast) has a definite hit in this movie.
The Pacashau Sacred Divinity Choir is in the middle of a performance when long-time director Bernard Sparrow (Kris Kristofferson) suffers a fatal heart attack. In order to continue to the annual Joyful Noise gospel competition, the church leaders must choose between his wife, G.G. (Parton) and Vi Rose Hill (Latifah), who has been his second for many years.

Like Tony Danza, Fran Drescher only appears in sitcoms in which her character is named Fran. It’s what acting coaches probably call her “specialty.” Or what everyone else calls “limited range.” Her new sitcom, Happily Divorced, is based on her life, specifically the personal hiccup she experienced when she divorced her husband who had recently come out of the closet (but, really, what gay man wouldn’t exchange vows with the star of 1997 Blockbuster Movie Award winner The Beautician And The Beast?) With that said, there leaves puh-lenty of room for fodder. Definitely enough material to warrant a traditional, three-camera sitcom on TV Land. It’s like Will & Grace, but more annoying! This is going to be a very, very good show, if Fran’s “Well, ditto!” comment has anything to say about it. Happily Divorced Tags: Free Full Episodes,Classic Video Clips,TV Land Schedule...

Timothy Dalton will guest-star in a multi-episode arc on the NBC's action-comedy "Chuck." Dalton will be playing a mysterious stranger who has a history with Chuck's (series star Zachary Levi) mom, played by Linda Hamilton ( Terminator , Terminator 2: Judgment Day ). This marks Dalton's first series appearance on American television since he guest-starred on "Charlie's Angels" in 1979. Dalton is perhaps best known for his portrayal of James Bond in The Living Daylights and Licence to Kill . He can next be seen in The Tourist opposite Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp. His other film credits include Hot Fuzz , The Beautician and the Beast , The Rocketeer , Flash Gordon , Wuthering Heights , Cromwell and The Lion in Winter . Update: Internet weirdness left this post out of yesterday's publish, despite the fact that it Was actually published. So... enjoy your day late Twitter-Wood, and keep an eye out for Today's Twitter-Wood later!
Super Saver may have won the 2010 Kentucky Derby, but Fran Drescher won today's Twitter Pic of the Day with her Audrey Hepburn homage and modest hat for the event. Rain was not enough to scare her away from the race or the camera, it would appear.
A few tweets in the feed were decidedly less upbeat, though, as word broke that Oscar-nominated actress Lynn Redgrave passed away. An array of post from Alyssa Milano and Brody Stevens to Virginia Madsen and Denise Richards shared Twitter-Wood's collective reactions to her death. You can read a few of them after the jump, where you'll also find a quick update on "The Last Airbender" and Ashton Kutcher's advice to potential iPad buyers.

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez movie Gigli has been named the Worst Romantic Comedy of all time in a new St. Valentine's Day poll.
