David Dhawan- Govinda are a great team ever since SWARG(1990) though their first film was TAAQATWAR(1989)
The film has a simple story but it's damn funny In 1997 David had 5 releases HERO NO.1(hit), JUDWAA(superhit), BANARASI BABU(flop), MR & MRS KHILADI(flop) and DEEWANA MASTANA(hit)
DD's favourite jodi known in 2 hero films are Sanju and Govinda but actually Anil- Govinda came out the best here This film is also special because this is dedicated to Manmohan Desai who died in 1994 and his son produced this film The story is simple, a love triangle and how 2 guys fight and try for a girl but knowing DD and his comedy the film is made a fun ride and it works
The start is good, Anil's character is well introduced and then the scenes involving Anil and Juhi are okay but the real fun starts when Govinda enters and his swimming pool scene is the most funny one His scenes with Juhi especially the scene where he tells about his sickness is hilarious The games Anil and Govinda play keep you in splits while the entire track of both acting like inspectors is hilarious Even the Papuu Pager scene is funny The ending too is surprising and well handled
Any flaws The length is one, the film does drag at times and secondly too many songs Also the film was in making for 2-3 years and the looks of actors keep changing but all this is forgiven
Direction by DD is superb Music is good
Amongst actors Govinda and Anil are perfect in their respective roles while Anil plays a tapori kinda role which he specialised and does a great job His timing with Govinda is perfect and also with Johny Govinda too does his best and keeps you in splits, he played a similar role in PARTNER(2007) but this is better Juhi Chawla compliments both well Johny Lever is hilarious, nice to see him less loud and over the top like he mostly is in other films barring some In this film he is kept under control and is hilarious Amongst rest Anupam Kher does his usual madness, Reema Lagoo is okay Shakti Kapoor is as usual, Saeed Jaffrey is theatrical as usual Salman Khan is okay in a cameo

Govinda. One of the most prolific, talented & stylish actors of his time. Give this actor any role, and he'll still pull it off with ease. Having seen most of this iconic actors films, I can very confidently say, that, Govinda is boon to Cinema.
'Deewana Mastana' is a romantic-comedy about two guys who fall in love with the same girl. Thus, follows a series of comedic moments, that lead to a long-drawn culmination.
As a film, 'Deewana Mastana', at best, can pass off as a time-pass entertainer. To be really honest, it's mainly Govinda's fantastic performance that works the most & he is without a doubt, the biggest strength of the film. Sure, there are moments that truly bring the house down, but, in the second-hour, the film drags itself a bit too much & loses pace.
The Writing Material is entertaining in the first-hour, but slips quite a bit in the second-hour. David Dhawan's Direction is good. Cinematography & Editing are passable. Songs are hummable.
Performance-Wise: Govinda, Govinda, Govinda. He delivers a fantastic performance, and owns the film. Anil Kapoor is alright. Juhi Chawla does well. Anupam Kher is top-notch. Johnny Lever is genuinely funny. Shakti Kapoor is fair, while Satish Kaushik leaves a mark. Salman makes a cameo in the climax.
On the whole, Watch it for Govinda.

Deewana Mastana review :
When David Dhawan's Aankhen (1993) had turned an all time blockbuster, veteran director Manmohan Desai had famously remarked that it was "his style" of filmmaking. Desai's son Ketan then collaborated with Dhawan to make a hilarious comedy titled Deewana Mastana with Govinda and Anil Kapoor in the lead.
The plot revolved around two undeserving suitors vying for love of a pretty psychiatrist played by Juhi Chawla. One is called Raja (Anil), a small time chor while the other is a man child called Bunnu (Govinda) who happens to be her patient as well.
Of the cast, Govinda was simply brilliant as the dimwit Bunnu who walks baby steps at home but proves to be a tough nut for the local goon Pappu Pager (Satish Kaushik in an unforgettable special appearance). Anil Kapoor was efficient as ever as Raja and was a formidable foe to Govinda's Bunnu. Johny Lever as Gafoor Bhai was terrific.
"Head ya Tail" proved to be a hit number and Deewana Mastana was a box office success inspite of clashing with another David Dhawan comedy Mr and Mrs Khiladi which released on same day. This was second instance for Dhawan when his two films released on the same day. The first time was on 29th December 1989 when his Aag Ka Gola and Jurrat released together.
Deewana Mastana was special for Dadar-Mahim movie buffs like me as the iconic Plaza Cinema re-opened with this movie after it became a target in the 1993 Bombay blasts. There was a huge crowd lined up at the advance booking counters and the film ran housefull for the entire week here just because the audience wanted to experience the glory of Plaza once again. It was indeed a treat for its regular patrons like me. The timepass comedy that Deewana Mastana was turned out to be was an icing on the cake.

In this comedy, two small time crooks, Raja (Anil Kapoor) and Ghafoor (Johnny Lever) get lucky and rob a payroll delivery. They go to Bombay with their loot, and Raja immediately falls in love with psychiatrist Dr. Neha (Juhi Chawla), and pretends to be a rich American to woo her. In the meantime, Bunnu (Govinda) comes to Dr. Neha for help with his many phobias; he, too, falls in love with her. Raja and Bunnu then begin a vicious rivalry to win her.
The energetic and oh-so-cute Govinda, undoubtedly the star of the show, is a delight to watch. His antics are well timed and nicely executed. Johnny Lever won an award for his performance in this movie, but I felt it wasn't up to his usual standard. Kapoor does a well enough job, but isn't a strong enough comedian to play opposite Govinda. The music is nice, with average choreography. The plot is fun, light, and occasionally silly, but though it does contain a twist, is not memorable.

Seen this movie about 100 times ( and no i am not exaggerating). The movie has it's moment. Nothing hi-fi, but pure pure comedy.
everyone in the movie plays great.. suitable for family viewing..

I've seen a lot of Bollywood movies and usually love them. However, recently it seems that Indian audiences and American/European audiences have different ideas on humor. Apparently, Johny Lever is considered funny in India. However, just acting like a stupid buffoon with a painfully grating voice is not funny - its painful - in my opinion. There's some great talent in this film but, for example, Anil Kapoor who's usually a strong performer, is paired with Johnny Lever in many of his scenes so it's just painful so his talent is lost there. Also, too bad Juhi Chawla is so little used and poorly used. In another movie, Daulat Ki Jung, Juhi was also minimized for Tiku Talsania who is supposed to be funny, I guess, but I seriously think he's the worst actor I've ever seen - just acting like an angry buffoon in a painfully grating voice is not good or funny. And he's not the only one acting like a stupid, angry buffoon in that movie. If you don't like Johnny Lever, then there are better films. Amazingly, Indian audiences must think that Johnny & Tiku are funny (and not painfully grating) as they're two of the busiest actors in Bollywood spoiling a large # of films for non-Indian audiences.

This is simply David Dhawans Best Movie he directed. If you are a Bollywood fan and know your Bollywood cinema, then the jokes in this film will appeal to you. Out of all the funny movies I've seen. These include Andaz Apna Apna, Coolie No. 1, Dulhe Raja, No Entry, Garam Masala, Hera Pheri and many more. Deewana Mastana belongs to the Anil Kapoor and Johnny Lever Teamwork. They both gave a comically brilliant performance. Juhi Chawla looks cute and was fabulous. Govinda, a natural comedian was Hilllarious. The ending was the funniest endings I've seen. After getting fed up of watching Bollywood Movies with the same storyline over and over again, about 2 guys like the same girl, and one sacrifices. you finally get a love triangle, where to men meet, instead of becoming friends, they instantly become the worst of enemies, fighting to impress the actress. So much intelligent jokes. Ive seen this 30 times and it never gets boring. So wrongly underrated, It was a big success But it didnt get the respect it deserves. It should be regarded as one of the Best comedies in Bollywood.
I dont understand why some americans have this high headedness that the rest of the world should adhere to their standards, like this ThousandsOfFilms guy, acting all high and mighty with the oddasity to write rubbish about such a classic Indian comedy. Go watch Dumb and Dumber, that is perfect movie for you.
David Dhawan has made many many enjoyable comedies in the 90's, but this movie along with Aankhen are his very best! There is nothing novel to the story about 2 guys in love with the same girl(Juhi Chawla in this case) and how they try to outdo each other. What makes the movie so enjoyable is the treatment and the terrific sense of comedy by both Govinda and Anil Kapoor. Johny Lever is also very good and he gets a lot of scope to perform and does well! Some of the most hilarious moments in the movie are when Satish Kaushik comes in as "Pappu Pager" and boy, that is what people talk about after coming out of the cinema hall! His dialogues had become quite a rage amongst the youth back when the movie release in 1997.
Govinda shows what he can do when it comes to comedy and his "baby steps, baby steps" is just superb! Anil Kapoor matches Govinda step to step in this David Dhawan comedy, which not many other actors could do it easily in a David Dhawan flick. Juhi Chawla is good at comedy as always and looks great!
I wonder how many times I have seen this movie.

Best movie, my favorite film. Govinda and Anil best jodi.the movie is very good. I recommend this movie for watching.
It's an awesome movie. Govinda at his best n also Anil Kapoor. All natural actings and great comedy in every moment. Watched it like a million times..one of the greatest Bollywood comedy. Don't understand why it's rated only 6 in imbd..it should be 10 without any doubt.

i saw the movie yesterday and i really liked it.The songs were really good and the performances were good by ANIL KAPOOR and JOHNY LEVER the first half was not so good but the second half was really interesting and it had a suspense. It was better than those comedy movies who are made for no reason and don't have a story. But this movie had a story and a good story. The ending was really good and no 1 cud get to know that who she married ANIL KAPOOR or GOVINDA so that was the mystery if i would rate this movie i would rate it 8/10 which is good and if i would rate it at box office i would rate it Hit,Because it deserved to be hit and now i am disclosing the mystery the person that JUHI CHAWLA married was **********

Two criminals flee and settled in a city where one of them found his love interest, who is a mental doctor. On the other hand, one of her patients is also in love with her. Thus, it becomes a love triangle where one must sacrifice his love. But the question is, who?
Some movies I never delete from my hard drive so that I can watch them anytime I want or whenever I need to change my mood. This movie is in the top 10 list of that. One of the movies, that I watched more than 50 times.
Govinda is a natural actor, he is incomparable in Bollywood. But it is Anil Kapoor's performance that surprised me a lot. I have never seen a comedy movie about Anil before it. His pair with Johnny Lever is just unbelievable. It can't be described how it worked. I love Govinda since Raja Babu. I love Anil as a serious and action actor, since Meri Jung. I love Johnny lever in every film of him. So, when the three come in 1 movie, it likes a jackpot for me. And another thing that makes the combination more enjoyable is the director David Dhawan.
The songs are also very good. Especially, there bina dil lagtan nahin o meri jaan, kya karoon, kya karoon... Tu jonahin, much bhi nahin..., O mummy mummy, o daddy daddy, ho jao ready..., Head ya tail, pyar Mohabbat dil ka khel... The music has a touch of retroness.
Sadly, it didn't recognize what it deserves. A huge huge underrated comedy flick. No less than Andaz Apna Apna I think. Which is also another masterpiece comedy.
Watch it to believe it!

David Dhawan + Govinda is literally the best combo in Bollywood. The movie is great in all directions. Some scenes in the movie are so sarcastic and funny at the same time. The duo of Anil kapoor and Johnny lever is fantastic, the plots show the sweeter and bitter emotion between them. At first it looks like overused script of bollywood in most movies, but this movie has something really more to offer you. Govinda with his skill of versatile acting and anil kapoor with sharp screenplay, johnny lever with his comedic skills, which literally makes the movie much better. The cast are perfect with the storyline. In addition to the music which is really written so well. Songs Sung by udit narayan and alka yagnik are just mind blowing, later all comes to the female actress of the movie Juhi chawla, a beautiful and sharp acting women in the movie she is the perfect pair for the duo ngl, literally i would recommend you to watch the movie, full of ups and down packed with sarcasm and funny comedy.
