When the script of a suspense movie is written in such a way that you keep on laughing generously alongside enjoying the spellbinding mystery embedded in the story, then the laughs available are nothing but the cherry on the cake. They are to be considered by the audience as the bonus received with a handsome salary by some employee. Gupt (1997) is one such movie only.
Gupt (secret) is the story of Saahil Sinha (Bobby Deol) who is the step-son of Jaisingh Sinha (Raj Babbar), the governor of the state. Saahil's mother (Priya Tendulkar) had married Jaisingh Sinha after the death of her first husband (Saahil's father) and she begot a son (Master Harsh) through her second marriage also. Saahil is a college student and he does not like his step-father at all. In the college, his friend is Sheetal Chaudhary (Manisha Koirala), the daughter of a businessman, Meghnaath Chaudhary (Dalip Tahil). However when he happens to meet his childhood mate, Isha (Kajol) in the college, it does not take much time for love to blossom between them. Isha is the daughter of the secretary to the governor (Paresh Rawal). Since Sheetal is also in love with Saahil, the love-triangle is complete here. But the theme of the movie is not a love-triangle but a murder-mystery. So here comes the twist in the tale.
Jaisingh announces Saahil's matrimonial alliance with Sheetal in Saahil's birthday party inadvertently fuelling Saahil's anger towards him. The same night, Jaisingh gets murdered. Saahil is arrested for his murder and he is awarded long imprisonment by the court. However he breaks jail and escapes through sea-route alongwith two fellow jailbirds in his bid to search for the real murderer and prove his innocence. Sheetal helps him. He meets Isha also. A shrewd and no-nonsense cop, inspector Udham Singh (Om Puri) is assigned the duty to re-arrest him. Locating the murderer of his step-father is by no means easy for Saahil because the suspects are many. The fathers of both his lover-girls, a high profile minister of the state (Prem Chopra), a corrupt labour union leader (Sharat Saxena), a corrupt advocate who had prepared the governor's will (Raza Muraad) etc. had motives to kill the governor. Hence the confusion is great. Further, the personal physician of the governor (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) is also murdered when he was going to tell Saahil something significant regarding the governor's murder. Now Saahil is facing the charge of that second murder also. However Saahil is able to unmask the real murderer and prove his innocence in the end.
Gupt is a gripping murder mystery, no doubt. As said earlier, the high laughter-quotient can be considered as its another USP. There are several characters in the movie who do not leave any stone unturned to make the audience laugh. The first and the foremost among them is Prem Chopra who has played the role of a minister. His reacting upon anything by exclaiming 'Beautiful !' in a peculiar manner tickles the funny bone of the viewer every time. And the last but not the least among them is Om Puri who though plays the role of a no-nonsense and highly efficient cop, has amused the audience with his mannerisms. The other ones contributing to the audience' laughs are Raza Muraad who utters funny SHERs (Urdu couplets), Harish Patel who always laughs (at the minister), Sadashiv Amrapurkar and Ashok Saraf who play the sidekicks of the investigating officer, i.e., Om Puri, Dinesh Hingu who plays the servant of the advocate, i.e., Raza Muraad etc. Thus the mystery becomes spicy.
Gupt has its share of flaws too. There are many weaknesses in the script. The governor has been portrayed as if he were the President of the United States of America. Nowhere in India, does a governor enjoy that much powers and profile. Instead of showing any chief minister or council of ministers, just one minister has been shown throughout the movie interacting with the governor and others. The governor must be governing some state but he talks as if he is governing the whole nation. Besides, there is no security at his official residence which is completely indigestible. The hero keeps a locket of the murderer (found in the fist of the victim) with him till the climax of the movie without making any serious attempt to open it and know something about the murderer whom it must be belonging to. The director has kept too many songs in the movie making it unnecessarily lengthy. At least three songs could have been easily removed and the movie could have been trimmed by 15-20 minutes. The songs block the flow of the story and irritate the viewer who is interested to be lost in the mystery.
Viju Shah has kept the melody intact in his music compositions. However keeping less no. of songs would have been better for the movie.
The story roams around Bobby Deol and he has done well. However, the director has not given him a proper hairdo. Anyway, it's his second movie only (the debut movie being Barsaat - 1995) and he has done everything viz. romance, emotion, action, song and dance etc. satisfactorily. Both the heroines also have done well. Manisha Koirala used to look very pretty those days. The complete supporting cast is well in place. Om Puri and Prem Chopra deserve special admiration for their performances. The dialogs written for Om Puri are also brilliant, highlighting the fearless and stylish personality of his character.
Summing up, Gupt is a well-made murder mystery which should not be missed by any mystery fan.

Good movie to watch for especially the movie's all songs are good to hear and also the suspense murder mystery is neatly done.
A movie in true Rajiv Rai tradition, Gupt is a big budget suspense thriller. The songs are well shot and the movie runs at a pace which manages to sustain interest throughout. Bobby plays a man wrongfully convicted for his father's murder and all evidence is against him. He escapes from prison and puts together all the clues to catch the real killer. Kajol acts well while Manisha looks cool. In fact she looks better than she has ever looked in all her recent movies. If you like well made Hindi masala movies, this is your movie.

Gupt was one of the biggest hits of 1997. It was a lavishly mounted film and directed by Rajiv Rai. Gupt starred Bobby Deol, Manisha Koirala and Kajol in the main roles.
I have watched this movie many times and its varied theme made me interested in it. The movie is not a typical Bollywood crap.
A plot with lots of twist and turns. The movie is about Bobby Deol who is convicted to life imprisonment for murdering his step father.Deol has all the evidence against him in the murder case to kill his father. His love interest is played by old flame Kajol as well as Manisha Koraila who his step father wanted him to get married to.Deol escapes from jail with the help of Manisha and vows to get to the bottom of the matter as to who killed his step father and why He also has the uneviable task of running from the law as a convict who has run from jail.Other co-actors like ompuri, raza murad, prem chopra and others have also performed to their best.i will not tell more as it will reveal suspense for those who have not watched it yet.
Direction by Rajiv Rai is excellent. As the writer, he has done extremely well to keep audience guessing till the end.He also keeps the pace of the film tight and fluid as the editor. The cinematography is eye-catching and Gupt features some of the best locales ever filmed.
The music was a very important factor in making the movie a hit. I think that the music of the movie is among my all-time favorites.Music director viju shah has done an excellent job.Movie's Background score is classic.
''Mere Sanam'', ''Yeh Pyassi Javani'', ''Gupt Gupt'', ''Yeh Pyar Kya Hai'', Mere Khabon Mein'', ''Becheniyam'', ''Duniya Haseenom Ka Mela'' - all are great to hear with some quick as well as different beats. This is one of those less movies which has each and every song perfect and loving to hear. The film's soundtrack is one of the best of the year 1997.
This movie is definitely a must see and I highly recommended to everyone.see it to Believe it.10/10

Gupt is a well-crafted Bollywood thriller from 1997 that keeps audiences engaged with its suspenseful plot and twists.
The story revolves around Sahil (Bobby Deol), who is wrongly accused of murdering his stepfather (Raj Babbar). As he tries to prove his innocence, he discovers a web of lies, betrayal, and family secrets. Manisha Koirala plays the role of Isha, Sahil's love interest, who stands by him throughout his ordeal. Kajol delivers a powerful performance as Sheetal, Sahil's stepsister, whose character has multiple layers of complexity.
The film's direction by Rajiv Rai is commendable, as he manages to maintain tension and intrigue throughout the narrative. The screenplay, written by Rai himself, keeps the audience guessing with its clever plot twists and revelations. The cinematography by Ashok Mehta captures the mood of the film effectively, and the music by Viju Shah adds to the overall atmosphere.
However, the film does have its flaws. Some of the performances feel melodramatic at times, and the pacing could have been better in certain parts. Additionally, the climax may not satisfy all viewers due to its predictability.
Overall, Gupt is an entertaining thriller with a gripping storyline and strong performances from its lead actors. While it may not be perfect, it's definitely worth watching for fans of the genre.

Gupt is probably the best murder mystery film ever made in Bollywood in modern times. I don't think there's been any that superseded.
The elements that make this such a great murder mystery are that the director Rajiv Rai directed classics like Yudh, Tridev, Vishwatma and Mohra, a great soundtrack by Viju Shah, top star cast of Bobby Deol, Manisha Koirala and Kajol and top supporting cast of Om Puri, Paresh Rawal, Sadashiv Amrapurkar, Ashok Saraf, the famous villains Raza Murad, Prem Chopra, Sharat Saxena, Tej Sapru and Mukesh Rishi and, Raj Babbar and Kulbushan Kharbanda.
The intro was a James Bond-style title card with a lady dancing and the locket, the item that leads to the murderer. I don't think there has been and still there's been a credits intro like this.
None of the actors had any flaws in the film, everything was perfect.
Even in 2018 it is a timeless classic.

I liked Gupt more than I liked Tridev, Mohra and Vishwathma. The plot was unconventional and some of the songs in the movie were awesome. But I must say the lack of better choreography and good costumes stick out like a sore thumb in most of the songs.
The success of Gupt lies in the brilliant portrayal of one of its leading lady, Kajol. She carries the whole movie on her shoulders. She was thoroughly into her character.
The climax will give you goosebumps. After a lot of red herrings, you can't really guess who the real killer might be. And that's where the victory of the script and the director lies.
There are lots of characters in this movie though. But these characters are added to heighten the suspense.
Bobby Deol is strictly okay. He should cut his hair and develop a strong screen presence like his brother Sunny Deol. Manisha Koirala looks good but looks heavy and wears clothes that accentuate her heaviness. The rest of the cast are okay but Om Puri stands out among the rest. I liked the way he mouths his dialogue.
Overall, Gupt is a must watch for Kajol fans! Go watch it with an open heart.

this song seems to have the bill (brit police soap/drama) theme tune stuck in it!! i was very confused!! why???! although i first saw this movie when i was 14, 8 years on, i just realised what on earth that tune was!! In Gupt Bobby Deol sure is a guy on the move. He romances two women, Kajol and Manisha, bashes up anyone he suspects for his dad's murder and escapes the cops in the nick of the time, displaying the same ESP they do when they trace him to wherever he is. In between, he meets his mother who believes he's knocked off his step-dad to convince her that he's innocent and meets all his dad's friends and colleagues in an effort to trace the real culprit. There's murder, mayhem, chases but little of the promised 'spine chilling suspense'.

Manisha is good. Kajol is better. And Bobby is the best .... Screenplay is good, direction is better and music is the best
Awesome, Mindblowing, Superb and similar adjectives to describe the movie....
Well "gupt" happens to be my most favorite Hindi movie and I have seen it 10-12 times !! The story lineup, screenplay, choreography , songs and a pirouette end are the USP of "Gupt".
Rajiv Rai has given the audience his magnum opus !
You should see the movie to gauge it's excellence ! What else to say...!

What I really love the most about this film is the songs. The music is so magical and a little bit mysterious...Viju Shah did a brilliant job undoubtedly...'Mere Khwabon Mein Tu', 'Mushkil Bada Yeh Pyaar Hai', 'Gupt Gupt', 'Yeh Pyaar Kya Hai' and 'Duniya Haseeno Ka Mela' - these are my personal favorites...
Moving on to the great performances of the three leads...'Bobby Deol' beautifully played a character who is wrongly framed for the murder of his father...During my childhood I was not so fond of 'Manisha Koirala'. But after watching her 'Gupt', 'Dil Se', 'Khamoshi' and 'Bombay', I've started liking her a lot...She is such a brilliant actress...I like to watch 'Kajol' with SRK on screen...My favorite movies of Kajol are - Baazigar, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and My Name Is Khan...She is paired with SRK in all of these films...Besides these films, I liked her in Gupt and Dushman where she is not paired with SRK...This film is undoubtedly a milestone of these three leads' careers...
Finally, I just want to say if anybody like to watch suspense thriller Hindi film, I must say this is a must watch movie for him/her...

Gupt works pretty well for the most part. The only drawback is over length. Roughly forty-five minutes could have been edited out without any loss of plot clarity. The film is basically an enjoyable whodunit with Bobby Deol falsely accused of murder. While the songs increase the film's length, some of them are definitely worth watching. Kajol does well in a slightly underdeveloped role. Manisha Koirala provides high-wattage glamour. The various twists and turns help hide the truth regarding the real killer, though it becomes obvious who it is long before the end.
Overall 6/10

Overlong but entertaining Bollywood suspense thriller. Has catchy musical numbers and a long drawn twisty storyline but keeps viewer interest right till the end. Performances are strictly adequate with some usual clichés.

Gupt is about Sahil(Bobby Deol), a man who is framed for the murder of his step father. He is sent to prison and depends on Isha to help him get out and have his revenge on whoever framed him. Strangely the bigger problem might be the fact that both Sheetal and Isha(Manisha Koirala and Kajol) are vying for his love. Meanwhile a cop is hot in the pursuit of Sahil. The are 4-5 suspects.
It is one of the films which shocks you, not in a bad way but in a good way . Story is original and fantastic . At no point of time you will feel bored . Performances by all the actors are superb especially from Bobby and Om Puri . Its music is great , some fast catchy tones and some melodious music.
Its a suspense film but you can watch it any number of times .

Gupt has its flaws, and quite a few at that, but it is an entertaining and holds your attention till the end, although just about.
The story starts off at breakneck pace and keeps you immersed, but it gets repetitive and drawn out towards the end. A 30 minute time chunk could have easily been shaved off the runtime without losing too much in the way of plot integrity.
If you look past some of the over the top sequences, the story is immersive, a whodunit, that keeps you guessing for large parts of the film.
There are far too many characters in the film, mostly insignificant, which could have been greatly reduced. Having so many minor characters coming in and out and different points does hamper the development of the main cast.
Kajol does well with her limited screentime and underdeveloped character. Manisha Koirala too does her part, although her job for most parts is to up the glam quotient without too much in the way of getting into the motives of the character. Bobby Deol tries hard enough, and for most parts fits in, but given that he gets the most screentime and a multifaceted character, a lot more could have been done with it. As for the other characters, Om Puri makes a mark as the dogged police officer. Among the rest, there's nothing much to do, but some of them do come off as too irritating, some too irrelevant.
The songs are good, the background music catchy although again, too many song and dance sequences does begin to take a toll, and you wish they'd use the time to push the story ahead.
The editing is jarry with sudden cuts and scenes move at very sudden, irrational pace. It does lack in fluidity.
For all its negatives, it's still a very entertaining movie with a good story line at its centre and makes for a fun watch, without asking a lot from you.

My gut instincts tell me that a Bobby Deol film is to be avoided at all costs but I still managed to get roped into watching Gupt it does have Manisha and Kajol two of the finest actresses of mainstream cinema. He is rich boy, childhood friends with a flunkey's daughter (Kajol) but the father prohibits a marriage between the two. Bobby is accused of murdering his father, lands up in jail, is busted out by his friend Manisha. Then he sets out on a quest to find the real killer there are corrupt ministers, strange doctors, weird hoodlums, even a very suspicious mother. In the meantime the hero also romances Kajol for real, and Manisha in his or her dreams I forget which, as it is all highly irrelevant.
This is a most boring and illogical film. Bobby cannot act to save his life, Manisha is wasted, and let no one tell you that the film showcases good acting by Kajol. Negative roles of note do not consist of a seemingly normal person suddenly turning psychotic and wielding a knife with a wild look. There is certainly a secret about Gupt how on earth could two fine actresses act in such a trashy and illogical film, and why could they do nothing to salvage this travesty?
