Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s All About Eve has ably demonstrated that a catty feud between theater critics and actresses is crackling subject matter for witty, adult entertainment. Anand Tucker’s The Critic follows a similar premise and, auspiciously, recruited playwright Patrick Marber––a well-known luminary of the British theater scene––to pen a script packed with sharp, acerbic dialog. This, still, is not half-enough. In its quest to surprise audiences, The Critic jumps down too many rabbit holes, progressively losing all semblance of plausibility or insight it might’ve otherwise yielded.
The film is being billed as an adaptation of Anthony Quinn’s well-regarded novel Curtain Call, though one glance at the book summary indicates that significant liberties have been taken––notably, a murder-mystery strand has been entirely jettisoned. What we have instead is an interpersonal drama between several personalities either directly or tangentially related to the theater. Chief among...

When I first walked out of The Many Saints of Newark, my initial reaction was to call it a B-movie. What I didn’t say at the time, however, was how much I love B-movies. While I saw the flaws in the film and couldn’t wholly endorse it to cinemagoers spoiled by the perfection of The Godfather, Goodfellas, and New Jack City, I can wholeheartedly recommend it to people like me. Those who appreciate the low-budget gangster movies sometimes because of their warts. A majority of fans of The Sopranos will have the same reaction: Meh, The Many Saints of Newark could have been better. So when’s it playing next? I plan to see it again, more than once, on the big screen.
In one of the film’s quieter moments, the Soprano family is gathered around a TV set, watching the classic Key Largo (1948). The specific scene...

Exclusive: Mark Gordon Pictures has acquired the rights Stephen McGinty’s forthcoming book, The Dive with plans to develop as a feature film and has tapped Edward Hemming to adapt. Mark Gordon and Beth Pattinson will produce for Mark Gordon Pictures.
“I’m delighted to be working with Mark, Beth and Ed as they adapt The Dive into a movie,” McGinty said. “The story of the rescue of Pisces III is one of the great tales of ocean adventure: when a band of blue-collar workers from Canada, America and Britain pulled together to rescue two men from a crushing depth never attempted before. I’ve long been an admirer of Mark’s extensive filmography – from Saving Private Ryan and Speed to Steve Jobs and Molly’s Game and feel confident that The Dive is now in the best possible hands.”

Colin Firth, Gemma Arterton, Simon Russell Beale and Pappa Essiedu are attached to star in the period drama “Curtain Call” with Anand Tucker directing for Mark Gordon Pictures and Fearless Minds.
The film, set in 1930s London, revolves around a feared theater critic named Jimmy Erskine (Beale), his loyal assistant (Essiedu), a newspaper owner (Firth) who wants to get rid of the critic and an actress (Arterton) who has been devastated by the excoriating theatrical reviews. The critic’s determination to survive ensures that the other characters are caught in a web of blackmail, deceit and murder. Patrick Marber adapted the script from Anthony Quinn’s novel.
“Patrick’s script is one of the sharpest and most entertaining I have ever read,” Tucker said. “It’s no surprise it has attracted such an extraordinary cast, and I can’t wait to bring this urgent story to audiences around the world.

Have you ever watched a crime show and thought you could solve the mystery better than the detectives? Is your ideal night out a Murder Mystery Dinner Theater? Are you a true crime aficionado? Do you love deciphering coded messages? If you answered yes to any of those questions, Hunt A Killer may be the game for you.
While I will admit to having a low scare tolerance, I’ve loved murder mysteries since growing up on reruns of Murder She Wrote. Given the inaccessibility of events like dinner theater during the pandemic, the idea of solving a murder mystery right in my own home sounded like a perfect opportunity for my husband and I to do something fun together. Hunt A Killer is a subscription service where you receive episodes of a murder mystery in a monthly box. The full mystery takes six boxes to solve,...

Eminem‘s daughter Hailie Jade Scott has served as the rapper’s muse throughout much of his career, lighting the inner fire that elevated him from a dishwasher on the outskirts of Detroit to one of the biggest musical forces of a generation. More than just motivation, his daughter has provided lyrical inspiration, and even a guest verse or two over the years. Though relations have occasionally been strained between Eminem and Hailie’s mother, Kim Scott—as evidenced in a number of his songs—his bond with Hailie has never wavered.

This past Sunday, actress Meryl Streep accepted the honorary Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 74th annual Golden Globe Awards. During her acceptance speech, she strongly criticized Donald Trump’s rhetoric on the campaign trail, including his mockery of disabled New York Times reporter Serge Kovaleski. Yesterday morning, President-Elect Donald Trump tweeted out a response, denying that he ever mocked Kovaleski and calling the three-time Oscar winning actress “one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood” and a “Hillary flunky who lost big.” Read his Twitter posts below.

1996 was an interesting and notable year for wrestling. It was the first full year of the Monday Night Wars, it witnessed the birth of Austin 3:16, Hulk Hogan turning heel, the formation of the nWo, the infamous Brian Pillman gun angle, the Curtain Call, the defection of top stars between WCW and the WWF, Vince McMahon offering guaranteed contracts to his roster for the first time, and monthly pay-per-view events from both of the big two.
So much happened in such a short space of time, but what was the real story behind some of those events? What are the misconceptions that are commonly parroted and what are the real facts? And what are those bits and pieces of information that have not been widely reported?
From grandstand matches that never happened, defections that didn’t pan out, significant changes to booking, and originally proposed gimmick ideas, we have it all covered.

The wilfully disturbing American Horror Story: Hotel may not make much sense this early on, but boy, does it look stunning...
This review contains spoilers.
5.1 Checking In
With American Horror Story entering its fifth season, it's more than fair to say that the show's been wobbly for the last couple of seasons. After the kooky fun of Murder House and the insanity of Asylum, subsequent runs Coven and Freak Show were examples of the show trying to do too much, going too far, pushing too many boundaries in the name of shock rather in the name of some sort of central story. Yes, American Horror Story has always taken on a lot, usually more than it can chew, and discarded bits here and there along the way like a child bored with his toys, but at least there was some kind of core holding it all together.

Hot on the heels of the superb Monday Night War release (reviewed here) comes yet another trip down memory lane into the Attitude Era in the form of The Kliq Rules. For WWE fans, The Kliq needs no introduction, a fact that the hour long documentary that kicks off this release acknowledges by taking barely five minutes to introduce and establish the group.
This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, although with an overall running time of around an hour it would perhaps have been beneficial to take longer to introduce all five main players to those newer WWE fans who will be viewing this release as the definitive historical document on this important chapter in Sports Entertainment history.
This approach does work, however, if the documentary is taken in the same vein as the aforementioned Monday Night War episodes, in that it seeks more to explore the impact that...

As much as it can, Game Dev Tycoon puts you in the driver’s seat of making video games for a living. As you grow in fame and capital, you move to bigger offices, hire employees, and eventually develop your own console, if you so choose. Along the way, you are tasked with making the next big video game on the newest and best consoles. Everything costs money, however, and the risks don’t always pay off.
That’s part of what I love so much about this game. The game ‘ends’ after 35 years, but there’s...

There’s a lot to love about Kingdom Hearts II, the sequel to Disney and Square-Enix’s mashup of their respective properties. It plays smoother than the first one, the plot elements are better balanced between the whimsical and serious, and all around the production values blows the first game completely out of the water. With that said however, Khii does share one key commonality with its predecessor, and that’s a final section that handily outshines the rest of the adventure.
During the first half of Khii, there’s a lot of build-up, and not a lot of understanding.

It’s not how you start, but how you finish. In the case of High Voltage Software’s cheesy sci-fi shooter sequel for the Wii, Conduit 2, you can substitute “start” with “spend ninety-nine percent of the game”, and this axiom still rings true. Why? Because despite a lackluster (though improved) experience fighting alien invaders across the globe while being annoyed by the disembodied voice of Kevin Sorbo now residing in your futuristic battle armor suit, Conduit 2 has an ending that totally nails the utterly ridiculous SyFy Channel nature of its up until then boring, cardboard story. I mean perfectly.

It’s rare when I see something so thoroughly misinterpreted by just about everyone. Maybe it’s because games don’t cover easily misinterpreted themes that often, or maybe it’s because the way games tackle certain subjects lends to one interpretation, even if the polar opposite was supposed to be read into it.
The latter is what I think happened to Red Dead Redemption. This game explores a number of themes. It’s a story of redemption, it’s a story of change, it’s a story about a clash of ideals, it deconstructs the western outlaw,...

One of the great epic RPGs of the previous generation, and perhaps of all time, Xenoblade Chronicles is a game that’s staggering in it’s length and depth. Boasting a massive campaign, two huge open worlds and an absurdly daunting 500 side quests to complete, Xenoblade establishes itself very quickly as a game that will require a sizable investment of time and effort for anyone ambitious enough to tackle it. With that in mind, this is a game that has a lot of pressure to deliver when it comes to the finale.

The next American Horror Story will be ‘Hotel’ and will star the trendy pop musician Lady Gaga…
As you probably guessed from the title of the article you just clicked on, Lady Gaga is set to star in American Horror Story’s latest instalment, dubbed American Horror Story: Hotel.
It couldn’t have come at a better time, in terms of audience good will, seeing as Lady Gaga won over a whole lot of film and TV fans with her performance at the 87th Academy Awards on Sunday night. Her Sin City: A Dame To Kill For appearance helped her geek credibility levels, too.
Little else is known of Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s next season of American Horror Story, but we can assume that the levels of hotel-themed horror will be a little worse than a lack of fried bread on the breakfast menu.

American Horror Story Freak Show concludes with one of the season's better episodes, and - what else? - a grisly murder spree...
This review contains spoilers.
4.13 Curtain Call
The one thing you can say about this season of American Horror Story as a whole is that it doesn't lack teeth. There have been a lot of crazy things that happened this season with plenty of graphic violence, torture, serial killers, weird sex stuff... you know, the standard American Horror Story staples, just turned up to 11 with the addition of killer clowns, human oddities, and cover songs. With the end of this season of Ahs comes the end of a whole lot of characters we've spent time with this season in shockingly graphic, straightforward manner courtesy of one Dandy Mott.
At first, it looks like the more things change, the more they stay the same. Dandy has taken over, and he's got deep pockets.

American Horror Story: Freak Show, Season 4, Episode 13: “Curtain Call”
Written by John J. Gray
Directed by Bradley Buecker
Airs Wednesdays at 10pm Et on FX
Of course Freak Show would end this way. It makes perfect sense that a season that’s never been totally willing to invest in a particular character as a hero or a villain figure would be brought to its conclusion by someone who the audience had known previously through just a two episode mini-arc in the season’s first half. Freak Show has flirted with protagonists (Jimmy, Bette and Dot, etc.) and antagonists (Twisty, Stanley, Dandy, etc.), some better and some worse, but none of them have fit particularly well in the roles they appeared to be slotted for. Accordingly, the death of an entertaining but emotionally inconsequential character (Elsa) at the hands of an even less important character (Edward Mordrake) seems to...

Though Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call launched for the 3Ds in North America last September, Square Enix has continued to periodically support the rhythm-based spinoff by releasing additional songs as downloadable add-ons. The latest batch of tracks arriving in Japan this week, and presumably in North America soon after, are a bit of a departure, though, as only one of the 6 songs comes from a Final Fantasy game. The others come from Square Enix’s own Romancing SaGa 3, the DS cult hit The World Ends With You, and the classic Super Nintendo game Chrono Trigger.
The full tracklist can be seen below, and a Japanese preview video showing snippets of each song can be viewed above.

It’s over. American Horror Story: Freak Show aired its final episode last night, and with it we say goodbye to Elsa Mars and her Cabinet of Curiosities. It’s been a bizarre season, to say the least. From Dandy’s psychotic tendencies to Chester (Neil Patrick Harris) and his creepy doll, Freak Show definitely wasn’t short of thrills. As for the finale? Well, there was a lot of death.
Dandy massacred everyone while Edward Mordrake returned to fuck shit up. We weren’t prepared for all of the killing that went down, so let’s break down the highlights from last night’s episode, appropriately titled “Curtain Call.”
The freaks quit on Dandy, so he literally shoots them all.
